Zaber was found on the streets of Midgar in a coma 2 years ago, after the first defeat of Sepiroth. He awoke now, at the same instant that Kadja becamke Sepiroth during Advent Children. In addition to the Requiem, Zaber's primary affinity is fire magic, which he can channel into melee attacks. It seems he can use it without materia, but he does infact have a fire materia implanted in his chest. Also, fire magic heals him.
Zaber was hired by Shinra at the beginning of FFVII, but, on his first day on the job, he was caught in the explosion of Mako Reactor #9. (The first one Cloud blew.) He woke up in Shinra's Lab, on Hojo's experiment table. It seems the flames of the explosion, combined with a burst of mako from the reactor, resulted in a mutation. The mako within him compressed into a fire materia, and also gave him the powers of a mako human, but with red eyes. After kicking Hojo's a**, he collapsed in the middle of Midgar, rescued by Marlene and Aeris' Adoptive mother.
Zaber later returned to his hometown of Kalm, to find that his family had been slaughtered by Sepiroth oh his way through. Another orphan of Sepiroth's attack, Syrene, became his traveling companion as we went after Sepiroth, and he and Syrene slowly fell in love.
They were leater joined by a monk named DMM who's monestary was burned down by DMM, and Melody, a young girl who's village was destroyed by Sepiroth. While following Sepiroth as Cloud and Co. did, they sought another treasure, the Coin of the Ancients, an artifact said to have the power to bring peace or destruction to the planet. It resided in the Forgotten Capital, and they arrived there at the same time as Avalanche and Sepiroth. After witnessing Sepiroth's slaughter of Aeris, Zaber, DMM, Melody, and Syrene battled Sepiroth while Avalanche fought Jenova. The battle left Syrene dead, Melody mortally wounded. Zaber, overcome with greif, attacked Sepiroth in a blind rage, and accidently triggered the coin's curse, the wings. This not only magically grafted wings onto Melody, DMM, and Zaber, but also imbued Sepiroth with additional power, in the form of "Safer Sepiroth's One Wing".
DMM took Melody to the Gold Saucer for emergency treatment, Zaber took Syrene back to Kalm for burial. He then returned to Midgar, just as Holy was activated. In a selfless act, Zaber used his body as a shield to protect Marlene and Aeris' Mother from Holy. This resulted in him being thrown into a coma that lasted for several years. He still has the coin, which he believes holds the secret to ending the curse. He seeks not only the path to redemption, but also revenge against Sepiroth and the Desendents for all that's been done to him and his friends.
Powers of the Coin of the Ancients:
Judgement: By focusing on a person and flipping the coin, the result of the flip judges that person's soul, whether they are good or evil. (The coin is one side black and one white, guess which correspond^.^)
Grants and Megid: Since it is really a materia, the coin has two spells, but which one you can use is determined by a flip. Black side up, Megid, a dark attack equivilant to Comet2. White side up, Grants, a weakened version of Ultima.
