Samantha's hand closed around one of Raena's. "No, I have a better, more important job for you, my friend. Leave the fighting for the rest of us." She knew well enough that fighting wasn't for a lot of people, and that was just tournement stuff. Real life fighting? Appealed to even fewer. But honestly...the world needed pacifists and supporters behind the scenes to keep the rest of the chaos in check.
"I need you to hang on, dear. You have to...for me. I'm going to need someone to keep me in check." She frowned, glancing away. "I have a temper...and I know it. But lately, it's been getting harder and harder to control. I need someone there to remind me to keep a hold of myself. To keep me from losing it and doing something I'll regret later. I don't know how far this is going to go or how things are going to turn out."
She glanced up again, a determined look in her eyes. "However, someone told me something not too long ago that stuck with me. No matter what they do to us here, we're still the same person on the inside. I won't let them change who I am...no matter how I end up looking. Do you think you can help me with that? Help me remember to keep that tie to my humanity?"
True...she probably could use the help if things got too crazy around here...but her ulterior motive was the hope of giving Raena something outside of herself to focus on in order to keep from dwelling as much on her own problems.

Raena looked up to the sky, and then to Sam, to the ground, and then back up to Sam. The second time she looked at her friend, an almost smile was on her face.
"So what, am I supposed to carry a squirt bottle around for every time you get a bit to hot under the collar?" she say, sarcasm thick.

"Works for dogs," she quipped automatically, pausing afterwards with an odd look. "Hmm...perhaps not the best choice of words or comparison..."
She scratched her neck carefully, unsure whether she was amused or had just insulted herself. Confusing situation she had here. "Err...yeah, so anyway," she coughed awkwardly, chuckling a bit and smiling at Raena. "It helps just to know that someone else is watching."

Raena sighed. "I'll do my best..." she said finally, still thinking about something that Sam has said earlier.
"Sam...would you hold it against me that...in truth...I want the person underneath to change?" she asked finally

Samantha was quiet for a bit, staring at the ground to give herself time to switch gears as well as choose her words carefully.
"Well, I'm not saying that all change is bad," she started slowly. "Without change, life would be pretty boring, right? Things stagnate and well...yeah, you need some change," she chuckled nervously, awkwardly trying to keep her thoughts in line. "It's just...if it's a change that you want to make, then that's fine. It can be a good thing, or bad I guess in some cases, in the long run...but it's your choice to make, so that makes it okay."
She looked back up now, finally getting to her point. "I just don't think it's okay for someone else to force you to change. To change because they want you to, with no regard for what YOU want. That's all I meant earlier."
Not remembering when she'd removed her arm from Raena's shoulders, Sam returned it and gave the other girl a one-armed hug. "I guess what I meant to say in all that rambling is that...if you want to change yourself, Raena, you have my support, okay?"
She forced a sad smile, sensing somehow that Raena needed this change. For herself on a personal level...and possibly for her own survival. If there was anything Samantha could do to help her, even just offer support, she'd do it.
