His attempts at illiciting fear and admiration failed spectacularly. Kaimi was unimpressed in the vast and amazing way he had hoped to impress her. Nevertheless, she thought Roth was a cool name and said so. "Roth. Thats a cool name." She grinned. "It sounds like the name a fire-breathing dragon would have or something."

Merroth got a lot of compliments from Emma, mostly things involving his personality and intelligence. It did not make receiving an unexpected compliment from a stranger any easier. When he did something right, he expected to be recognized for it, but when he had done nothing at all his instinct was still to anticipate a smack upside the head, or a star-born heat welt on his arm. The whole "compliments without precedent" phenomenon still surprised him.

"Um, thanks," Merroth said, and decided this meant Kaimi could indeed be his follower. "I also have a genius-level intelligence." He tilted his chin up just a nudge, smirking with superiority.

Kaimi smiled at him, tilting her head slightly to one side as if listening to something and her smiled widened. "I'm supposed to be really impressed by that, aren't I? Thats what boys like, right? To be impressive?" At least, that was the information she was being fed at the moment by those pesky little voices. Since there was so little male influence in Kaimi's life, she wasn't entirely aware of the differences between boys and girls.

Merroth's mouth fell open. He had been aiming for some degree of subtlety and humility, and had missed the mark by several galactic sectors, but still. "What!? You can't-- That's-- Don't be an idiot!" He threw his arms up in the air and waved them about dramatically. "Except I'm sure you can't help it, because that's just what you are, an idiot, right? You can't do maths, you don't go to class, you fail to recognize GENIUS when it's standing in right front of you, and now you're making me late! Arrrgh!" He slapped his fingers into his hand as he made each point and concluded by whirling on his foot and slamming his fists against the wall.

Kaimi's eyes got wider and wider at each point of his tirade. She actually flinched a little when he hit the wall. "Are you okay?" She asked, not really sure what to do. "Did you hurt yourself?" She decided to let the rest of it go. There was an argument going on in her head - the male voice was siding with Merroth and the female voice was laughing at them both. Kaimi shook her head, trying to clear it. "I didn't mean to upset you..." Was what she managed, making her voice uncharacteristically meek.

Merroth had not hurt himself, of course -- he was a lot hardier than he looked -- but he instantly seized on the opportunity to exploit this. "Aah!" he warbled, holding his wrist as if injured. "See what you made me do?" He clutched the "injury" to his chest and scrunched his face up like he might cry.

Kaimi, being tenderhearted and more than a little bit gullible, looked concerned. "Here, let me see..." She took a step towards him and held out her hands. "Are you bleeding?" Her brow furrowed. "Does it hurt terribly?"

"No, but I think you've broken it!" he exclaimed. "You're going to be in such trouble when everyone finds out!" He hoped to all hell that this ploy was going to work because he was somewhat lacking in exit strategy. Or really any strategy.

Kaimi frowned. She was worried about him, but she didn't think she liked the way he was threatening to tattle. There were also the niggling little whispers in her head saying that it was very possibly a bluff. "Well, we'd better get you to the nurse, then. I'm sure she'll be able to set your finger. It will probably hurt worse when she straightens out the bone and all, but then I'm sure it will be much better." Kaimi smiled brightly and encouragingly at him. "I dont think I'll be in trouble, though." She added complacently. "You're the one who punched the wall."

"You made me do it," insisted Merroth, determined that his perceived certainty should win out. "I'll go myself. You've done enough." He managed to put a petulant, wounded tone into his voice, a sulky little victim seeking a corner to curl up where he might lament the terrible horrors of the world in solitude and safety.

Kaimi smiled a little. She was zen enough to know she hadn't made him do anything. In fact, according to Kaimi's philosophy regarding life, nobody ever made anybody do anything. Sure, they could torture you for information, but it was ultimately your choice to give it up or die a horrible screaming painful death. Nevertheless, she shrugged, not willing to argue the point. "I hope you feel better, Roth. It was nice to meet you."

"You owe me!" Merroth informed her as he headed off down the hall -- not in the direction of the nurse's office. "Don't forget that!" It was a promise that echoed back to her. This was not the last she would see of Tenebras Merroth Clark.
