There is a theory of a multiverse where there are multiple universes but it only that, a theory. Although when you look at anti matter it is plausible to say that a negative copy of our universe exists although how that universe would come to be, I dont know but it is good food for speculative thought.

The idea of the multiverse is that all the universes have no interactions with each other, each have their own space-time and matter and the actions of one universe does not affect the other.

One of these theories as I recall works like this... think of a playing card. This is our universe... it goes on in the basic dimensions forever, and is floating through whatever is between universes. Now put another playing card an inch from that one... this is another universe. It doesn't touch or interact or anything with ours and for all purposes we can't do anything with it. They are two separate entities that exist outside of each other. They even say the in the other ones our concepts of physics and how things interact don't have to apply. Anyway, that's a theory and there are various others related to it about what would happen if one universe collided with another, or if black holes are connections between them, etc. etc.

The Sloth Master
Okay. There is a lot of controversy about this topic.

The way I see it, is that at the time before our universe, there was another universe, possibly the same one. Then, as the universe expanded, galaxies collided, causing a super-massive black hole. The whole universe was pulled in, to the point where it was a single point; a singularity. As more of the universe gets pulled in, the pressure inside the the singularity is infinitely unimaginable and eventually cannot withstand it anymore. It must explode, causing built up matter to be recreated and as matter clustered, planets, stars etc, are formed. Eventually as the universe expands, it cannot contain itself and a super-massive black hole forms. Then the cycle is repeated for an infinite amount of time. Nothing becomes something, Something becomes nothing. It is also possible for this to be happening in reverse in a sort of "flip-side" universe.
It's all quite amazing. burning_eyes

That's the theory I've heard referred to as the rubber band theory... it stretches out then compacts back together and keeps cycling this way for eternity.

However, according to current measurements it seems more likely that the expansion is speeding up not slowing down. Though maybe that is due to not having reached some critical point from where it will start snapping back. *shrugs*

I'd like to know what the universe is in. Like, we are on earth, which is in our solar system, with belongs in the milky way (galaxy i think) which is part of the universe, which is inside... what? confused

Lisa Randall has published some really interesting ideas about the origin of the universe (multiverse?), and a lot of it is accessible to laypeople (non-cosmologists with extensive backgrounds in general relativity). I suggest you check it out.

I personally believe in the big bang theory. Lately I have been hearing people say that the universe has all ways been here, and it was never created.

What my theory is, is that there was no Universal Creation, as I believe that it was always here. The Christian belief just theorizes that God made the 'Big Bang' happen to show his power, and from that idea, scientists have been trying to see if a Universe is creatable, but I think that the Universe was here and life continues through the immense Eon, and Evolution has been hapening throughtout our many galaxies for as long as a species exists.

i think it was the very first implosion
the center of gravity pulled everything together (i dont know what ëverything" is)
and since it was so intense, the big bang happened

I wanted to join this guild for just this discussion. I have been bothered by this for a long time, and while I can't decide on the whole idea yet, I have some useful theorys. (note: thinking will be required. Immense thought. All I have to say is just a small part of the subject.)

1. While I can't say the universe didn't form from the big bang, I do believe it had an earlier beginning. Energy doesn't come from nowhere.
The Universe must have had a beginning, starting at nothing. How this is possible, I haven't a clue. Our very existence is a paradox, however, since we are here, apparently it's possible.

2. So far I've barely passed the beginning in my theories, however the best place of an equation to start at is the beginning. Nothing.
When one thinks of nothing, you might imagine blackness, or pure white. However my belief is that "nothing" cannot be imagined in the mind. It is an idea, such as time. One cannot imagine the form time takes, except by association with say, a clock. So, is sentient perception needed to even create nothing?
Even the name, nothing, would have to be completely taken away in order to make sense of it.

*ow* even my own theories are still incomplete at this point, and hard for me to understand further. I must research more. However, help on the subject would be appreciated. Hope this helps somewhat, even incomplete.

I say the big bang theory and God are real. Just hear me out:
Even if you're not religious, you have to admit that nothing comes out of thin air. Maybe everything started with a molecule/particle and it split and split and split, but where did that particle come from.
I think God created that first reaction and nature did the rest.

I think the Big bang was a huge star in the old universe that was so huge that when it exploded it destroyed everything. All the old planets, star, and other things broke into pieces combining with other particles. these new creations became pulled into the gravitational forces of relatively large objects. That's how it was all made if you ask me. Though, there could be other ways the universe was created... smile

Even so...where did God come from? I'm sure he didn't just materialize out of nothing.
