I used to live in California (recently moved to Texas) and I do plan on returning to California. I used to live in San Jose. For those that don't know, it is in northern california, in the south Bay Area south of San Francisco. No, it is not a suburb of San Francisco, infact it is a good hour and half drive away from SF. San Jose is also known as (the heart of) Silicon Valley.
Okay, that aside, even though I was not near the boarder, there was always an ever increasing number of mexicans in San Jose. You would see them every where. In front of places like Home Depot and Lowe's begging you to pay them whatever you can to let them help you with your home improvement projects. Some times you would see them in or near downtown offering to wash cars and windshields. I know many places that "hired" illegal immigants at low under the table pay.
Honestly, I really don't think they are "taking away" any of the "good" jobs. Why? They are illegal. They can;t get a proper education and therefore no proper documantion to show their education status to get those better jobs. True, they may take jobs away form the poorer, legal classes. It would be too hard and waste too much money to track down every single illegal immigrant (no matter where they come from) and send them back, or atleast out of California.
As for the license thing, last I heard Gray Davis passed that bill as a last screw up for Arnold to deal with and to help boost his own popularity among others since it seems like what so many wanted. Of course, Arnold tried to take that away (I thought he did) and it of course made him look bad in immigrant's eyes (both legal and illegal). I agree that they shouldn;t have driver's licenses. They shouldn't have anything because they are illegal. If they want it, they should do all they can legally to obtain it. True, it does takes a long time, but that's what voting is for. Yeah, I know, the mexican government isn;t all that great and mostly corrupt.
As for solutions, I really wouldn't know what to do that wouldn't waste too much money. Everyone wants to california and even us goverment to help find and ship off every single illigal immigrant. That would take forever to do and cost billions. All i can see us reasonably doing it to vote in and pass more laws for stricter control on the border. Of course, for it to be really effective, the mexican goverment would have to do their part in regulating their side of things. I don;t see that happening any time soon.

Sadly, that is the hot button that does get politicians off their asses to do something.

Alright, don't see why it matters but I live in Washington >.<
I also think part of the problem is they broadcast (well, here anyways) some T.V. shows that make illegal immigrants out to be so innocent and that they should be kept here simply because bad things have happened to them. Andthat gets people here sympathetic and start housing and giving work to illegal immigrants. Well, we have had some pretty bad things happen here too. Terrorism, natural disasters, etc etc, and I don't feel they should be given any special treatment for having a sucky life when we have alot of Americans who need our hlep right now instead.
But I agree, I think security on the border should be beefed up. We aren't racist for not wanting illegal people in our country. Nothing against legal immigrants, from Mexico or any place. 2 of my closest friends weren't born in the U.S. and I sitll have nothing against them. But when people come in illegally when the economy is in suh an unstable state as it is, it just is too far.
There are people here who would take those jobs, hell I know people 14 years old that would take those jobs if you didn't have to 15 in Washington to have a job permit (stupid Washington laws, like in Des Moines it is illgeal to have over 3 pets rolleyes ) But we could find people easily to fill those jobs.
To sum up my pointless post (too early to really put a good effort in, I'll try later) I think illegal immigration should be stopped, or at least make an attempt to. And illegal immigrants should be sent back to their place of origin. If it sounds cold and uncaring, too bad. That's the way life and laws work.

What's your take on it then though? You can still have an opinion about it. And how does that person feel about being here?

I heavn't herd from my mother since she moved to the U.S. so I whouldn't have much information on what its like to be an illegal imigrant, but I'm assuming bad because she couldn't bring anything with her and hasnt contectacted me in a week.

We really should send them back, or maybe...Possibly...Help them, yep you heard me, let's help them, not as easy as it sounds, we have our own problems to deal with, but I think something could be done, I don't know though, this isn't my type of thing.. sweatdrop

It's funny how we coined the term "illegal" immigration, seeing as this is a country that was founded by, um...oh yeah, immigrants. It's true that once a country becomes large enough and powerful enough, it views others as negative influences and hence tends to separate itself and builds walls to protect its "rich" culture and "valuable" assests. Another term for this: xenophobia.
I think that there's a strong negative stereotype against Mexicans and Latin Americans in general. Sure, our friendly neighbors to the north are an industrious people with no real need to mooch off our productivity. However, those damn dirty Mexicans have no stable government, the live off of nothing, and all they want to do is live off our our hard-earned tax dollars. Right? That's pretty much how people view it, or at least how it's portrayed in the media. Nevermind the fact that thousands of immigrants are coming over from various Asian countries (Laos, Vietnam, etc.) and Eastern Bloc countries (Ukraine, Armenia, etc.). What defines one person as being perfectly acceptable and another as a reject? Mainly politics.
I'm not for illegal immigration, but I'm not against immigration control. I think that a set policy should be created and enforced, but one that doesn't negatively target people south of the border.

The main issues: - They do jobs Americans don't want to do. But Yet Americans need those jobs when Corporate jerks move out of the US - We pay for their medical care in the ER. They shouldn't get it Period! they aren't citizens and don't help pay for anything. Thus shouldn't get it - They're illegal citizens of the US. They should be Hunted and deported ASAP that will give jobs back to americans and also create Jobs because we need people to help collect them - They call us racist. Call us what you want, but the people who want then out of the country the mostare the LEGAL IMMAGRANT since they jumped through the hoops and got their citizenship. - Mexican government is corrupt. Not our problem - They're given driver's license. But they are not insured so if there is a crash and some one dies or gets hurt they don't have to pay a god damn thing!
The bottom line that they should be shipped back. We have to adapt to illegals and learn spanish! that is bull s**t. They need to learn English before coming to this country. They shouldn't be allowed to pull the s**t off! and we shouldn't allow it!

I really have to agree with L33tB4K4 on this one.
What annoys me is this: during any other time in the history of our country, when foreigners came to this country they learned our language: English. My ancestors from Sweden, Finland, Russia, Germany, etc. (you get the idea) all came over here and LEARNED THE LANGUAGE. They didn't expect everyone to bow to the fact that they spoke languages x, y, and z. They learned the languages and assimilated into the rest of the country.
Now, there's one thing about keeping your "heritage" as far as language goes, and passing it onto your kids... but to me it's another thing entirely when you refuse to learn the common language of a country and expect everyone else to bow down to your language needs. I've been disgusted to hear of schools with high percentages of immigrant students teaching classes in SPANISH instead of ENGLISH. Public schools, at that! I can't even believe our tax dollars pay for this... and of course the illegal immigrant families aren't adding a dime into that.
I'm also irritated to see how many food packages have SPANISH written all over it as (sometimes) the primary language instead of English...
Anyways.
As far as medical things go in the E.R., I actually saw a rather disturbing news clip back in high school about that. The report followed what happens to different people that go through the E.R.: a person with medicare / medicaid, a person with typical insurance, and an illegal immigrant who had no insurance. I was disgusted, quite honestly. The reason why hospitals have such insane price tags on their procedures is largely due to the fact of people coming in with no insurance expecting to be treated. By law, they CANNOT BE TURNED AWAY EVEN IF THEY HAVE NO WAY TO PAY FOR IT.
Think about this: I had surgery to remove a tumor in my stomach. The price tag of that little ordeal, plus a two week hospital stay, and medications, was about $160,000. My insurance covered most of it and we were left with $16,000 of the original cost. Now imagine an illegal immigrant going into the E.R. for stomach pains - after all the testing they find a tumor in their stomach, leading to surgery, medications, and a two week hospital stay. What do they end up paying? They actually end up paying nothing at all, since they can't afford it and have no insurance. I can guarantee you that if we didn't have this problem in our hospitals, my price tag wouldn't have been NEARLY at the amount it was. It's only that high to cover the costs for all the people that come in not able to pay...
As far as "They do jobs Americans don't want to do," that's bullshit. I live in Minnesota, and while we don't have immigrants at the numbers most southern states do, I can tell you for a fact that it took me 7 months just to find a shitty part time job to get me out of the house, simply for the fact that all the illegal immigrants are taking the hourly pay jobs here...
What I want to know about driver's licenses, is why licenses from other countries automatically transfer into allowing you to get one here? Maybe it's just me, but foreigners, no matter where they are from, should be made to take classes and testing before being allowed a license. A Somalian girl I work with told me that where she is from, people were automatically GIVEN a license at a young age without any testing even, not to mention her city did not have any driving signs, lights, or better yet... roads. And these people are automatically given a license just because they had one from another country... neutral I think you can see all the problems that arise with this... ("Hey, what are all these colored markings on the roads?! Am I supposed to drive in the middle of them?! n________n")
Okay, I'm shutting up now... that got me pretty fueled up...

I don't really understand how illegal immagrants take away from the American economy. Bottom line for me More people=More money. When a country has more people it needs to make jobs to provide for these people. When you have a rubber boot shortage, you make more boots, you make another factory, you have more jobs. I don't know how I can make this any simpler.
Sure, they may be illegal, but you just can't go shooting all the illeagal immigrants, some people have a real reason for being in the US illegally.

There's a slight fault in your logic: if there's a boot shortage, we just buy more boots from China. No jobs are created here. Sad, but true. cry

Soleq There's a slight fault in your logic: if there's a boot shortage, we just buy more boots from China. No jobs are created here. Sad, but true. cry True, that. It would be nice if we could make our own boots, but that could cost as much as twenty times as much as just buying them from someone else. Really, it isn't about creating jobs for the people as much as it is generating money for the already wealthy.
