The shock, surprise and elation that had overwhelmed Althalus finally began to give room to logic and common sense. Though he felt a new sense of protection over the love of his life, he also understood that she wasn't made of thin ice. She wasn't going to shatter in to a million pieces as soon as the wind gusted nor was the precious life inside her going to either. . . . maybe. . hopefully. The art of pregnancy wasn't something Althalus truly understood but he was certain Nivriti knew what she was doing.
Maybe. Hopefully.
While she took care of the life growing within, he would make sure she lacked in nothing; no comfort would be too great and he would happily serve. If he hadn't given Nivriti everything before she surely would have it all now.
Althalus' breathing finally slowed to a more normal pace and he offered Nivriti one final nuzzle. "You're right, of course," he grinned, his red tail swishing happily behind him. "It wouldn't be much of a family if their father dropped dead from excitement, nor would my legacy think very highly of me." He winked at her, his usual playful humor sparkling his eyes. There he was. . . slowly going back to his normal, typical self.
"Well then, m'dear, let us be off so we might find you a proper shelter." The sooner that happened, the sooner he could be off to find treats and direct her to the nearest source of water; he had a lot of thinking to do with this news of fatherhood. . . . . and maybe a little panicking too.
The thought was slowly sinking in, and though it was made up of good, his young, spirited side was still feeling overwhelmed. Maybe a trip to see Yei was in order - not only did she need to know the news of what her wishes had done but he might need a little assurance. Yei and Grencia had tried to be parents for years. . . . It seemed the spirits weren't quite as stubborn when it came to Nivriti and himself.
C'est la vie. . . .

Nivriti didn't know everything either, what she did know was from her mother, who'd managed to carry her sister and herself with no problems, and had given birth with the help of a friend of hers, a mare called Ardia who was mother to 7 children, and a great-grandmother several times over. What she knew was that the foals were protected enough, and if she was sensible in her actions they would be just fine.
She pushed her nose against her mate, smiling at him.
'I'll follow you wherever you want to take me.' she said, stretching her wings out and then tucking them back against the swell of her belly.
'Your mother should be pleased when you tell her.' Nivriti commented once they were on their way.

Fatherhood. . . The news was still stunning to the stallion. His mind could hardly fathom the idea though excitement had begun to spread through his veins. There were going to be foals around. . . and not just any foals but Nivriti's and his! They would have a family together. . . They weren't just lovers anymore, very soon they would dubbed parents.
Mother. Father.
Ooooooh. . . . . . Trying not to over-think the great responsibilities that now faced him, the stallion quietly lead his mate through the autumn underbrush. The season would make for further complications with the fast approach of winter; the foals would have to have proper shelter and enough food to graze upon during the worst of the season. So much to think about!
Althalus was shaken out of his thoughts at the mention of his mother. Glancing over to Nivriti, the stallion gave a little chuckle to relieve the tension that began churning in his stomach. Oh by the spirits was Yei going to get an earful! He was more than sure that she had some how schemed this in to happening one way or another. . . .
"Pleased is going to be an understatement." Or so he hoped. It was one thing for her to want to wish for the pitter-patter of little hooves. . . but to find out her son was going to be a father so soon after meeting Nivriti? Well, part of him wondered exactly how she'd respond.
It wasn't everyday you suddenly became a parent, after all.
"How did your mother react?" He asked softly, curious. Was it even worse for Nivriti? Thankfully he'd been so honored to meet Aish before snatching up her daughter and taking her north. . . but how hard was it to know that your daughter would be carrying foals while away? How hard was it to know that ones baby wasn't a baby any longer?
Oh gods. . . what if he had a daughter? What if someday she wanted to run off with some rogue stallion and have babies too?
Nope. Nada. Not gonna happen. Not on his watch, thanks.

Nivriti wondered what Althalus was thinking; he kept falling quiet, and she was hoping that was because he was trying to digest the news still but in a pleased way, not thinking that she'd chained him down with an impending fatherhood shackle.
She nodded at that, of all those who needed to know, Yei would be the easiest to tell. She smiled softly at the thought of her mother-in-law finding out about the news.
'Well I think? She was pleased for me, and fairly pleased that she was to be made a grandmother so soon.'
Nivriti pushed back encroaching and half leafy branches, shivering as the cold leaves slapped against her side when they moved back.
'Have we much to go?' she asked. Pride was all very well, but she really wanted to rest and soon.

Althalus was relieved that Aishwarya didn't think too poorly of him. He couldn't possibly imagine what it might be like to watch ones child be swept away by love of another. . . not just swept away but now bound together as a family. To have children so soon. . . well, ready or not, foals would soon be on their way!
"I'm glad," he admitted, glancing over at Nivriti with a new sort of love blossoming in his gaze. She wasn't just his mate. . . she would soon be the mother of his children. They would soon hear the pitter patter of hooves and see a reflection of one another in each smiling face.
Oh gods. . . . More and more Althalus couldn't wait.
"Just up this way, beloved," the sunset stallion hastily assured. He gave Nivriti some encouragement through a few nuzzles, urging her feet to carry her just a little while longer. Sure enough, the stallion knew his way well and after a short, uphill walk he guided her to the security of an older cave. It was half-hidden by the thick, woodland foliage that surrounded the area and was driven deep within the slopes. "Not quite as scenic as our original abode," he admitted with a rueful grin, "But what do you think? Is it large enough? It's hidden mostly from view, and shall keep us warm when the snows begin." And they would sooner in the mountains and slopes than they would anywhere else in the kawani lands.

Nivriti followed Althalus without further comment, concentrating on where she was placing her hooves. Falling when pregnant wasn't something she planned on doing, and there could be any number of loose stones to turn a hoof on under the first fallen leaves of the season.
'It's fine,' she reassured him, walking in a short way. It was dry, and the ground underhoof was loose earth, soft enough for her to lay down on as long as necessary. The wind wouldn't be able to get into here, and she imagined it would be cosy if they lay down together.
'Besides, a pretty view isn't going to help me give birth in peace and security. This will.' she chose a spot and lowered herself, letting her wings fall open as she sagged into the ground.
'Ohhh..' she murmured.
'That's much better.'

There was so much he needed to do. . . Though the small hollowed out cave was dry and would keep the worst of the breezes off, he still couldn't help but feel it wasn't enough. Not for his most beloved Nivriti or his unborn children! It was bare, it was minimal, and it needed to be stocked up with various edibles and pleasantries. . . It was one thing to forage for food during winter while grown and healthy; it was quite another thing to do it pregnant or with foal!
Nope - everything had changed in an instant! Everything he had become greather than himself or Nivriti and Althalus felt an anxiousness like he'd never known. Oh, he was so joyous to be dubbed father, even if he was uncertain he was prepared but he would handle the task well. Yei and Grencia most certainly needed to be informed about such a development and yet. . .
Seeing her flop down, heaving a sigh, Althalus felt loathe to leave. He had only just gotten her back after what felt like an eternity away. And even though he'd fawned over her earlier his affections had been temporarily misplaced after hearing the real reason she had left; no, foraging could wait a little while at least.
Stepping closer to her, he lowered himself next to her, reaching over to gently nuzzle her neck. "You needn't worry about a thing, love," he assured lightly, "I'll begin to forage food for our extended stay and for the little ones to come." There were certain edibles he could bring back, treats that would last for some time, as well as grain and hay he was certain various villages would gift. "But I just can't bring myself to part from you quite so soon," he admitted his weakness tenderly, silver eyes light with nothing but love and adoration for his lovely Nivriti.
Oh, he'd fallen hard after meeting the lovely wind. . . she had stolen his heart with little effort and could do whatever she wanted with it. Nothing could diminish his affections for her, and if anything, they'd only grown stronger with the idea of raising a family with her. Young as they were, uncertain as the future was, at least he she knew his love was true.

Nivriti yawned, obviously completely oblivious to all Althalus's mental chatter.
'Mmm?' she blinked, having been in a slight doze before he had nuzzled against her.
'Oh I wasn't, I know you'll be at my beck and call,' the mare managed to tease him, even in her relaxed and verging on sleep state. It felt strange to feel so drowsy after laying down only moments ago, but if her body had just been waiting for her to relax to hit with how tired she actually was, it was probably right.
'Stay with me then for a while before you go zipping around like a fly.' Nivriti lipped at him, and leaned in against him.
'Love you..'

Althalus cuddled up against the wind, craning his neck rest it ever so tenderly and protectively over her own. This truly was bliss... to be cuddled up against the one that made your heart flutter and your stomach twist in to knots; honestly, he couldn't imagine a more perfect situation. . . . aside from having a foal or two hobbling around! And yes, he could almost hear the pitter-patter of little hooves already, brown and orange and gold. . . . .
"Of course, m'love," he assured her, flipping his tail and allowing it to tangle over hers. Yes, there was no doubt he was thoroughly, a hundred percent hers and just as tightly wound around her hoof. There wasn't anything he'd do for Nivriti save give her up. Ah, but her affections he knew seemed to rival his own, and such a insecurity had long since passed on his end. But, even should she ever begin to stray, he knew he'd fight tooth and hoof for her heart, for her love rekindled. He would never let her go so easy. . . she truly was the one love of his life.
"Love you too, with every breath, and every minute it but grows and grows," he murmured, watching her body relax. Oh, the poor darling looked exhausted! "Sleep now, dearest heart, and may your dreams be sweet."
