Prompt: Alligator River Story
Once upon a time, there was a woman named Abigail who was in love with a man named Gregory. Gregory lived on the shore of the river and Abigail lived on the opposite shore of the river. The river that separated the two lovers was teeming with man-eating alligators. Abigail wanted to cross the river to be with her beloved Gregory. Unfortunately, the bridge had been washed out. She was wearing a tight skirt and a low-cut blouse because she wanted to look sexy for Gregory. Sinbad, the ferry captain, said that he would take her across- however, the look in his eyes frightened her. Ivan, a close friend of Abigail's did not want to be involved at all in the situation. Abigail felt that her only alternative was to take the ferry, even though she did not trust Sinbad.
After leaving the river shore, Sinbad told Abigail that he couldn't control himself and had to go to bed with her. When Abigail refused, he threatened to throw her overboard. He also said that if she did what he wanted, he would deliver her safely to the other side. Abigail was afraid of being eaten alive by the alligators, and didn't see any other alternative for herself, so she did not resist Sinbad.
When Abigail told Gregory about what had happened to her, he viewed her as asking for it because of the way she was dressed. He saw her as unclean and cast her aside with disdain. Heartsick and dejected, she turned to Slug, who happened to have a black belt in karate. Slug felt anger at Gregory and compassion for Abigail. He sought out Gregory and beat him brutally. Abigail was overjoyed at the sight of Gregory getting his just due. As the sun set on the horizon, we hear Abigail laughing at Gregory.
-----
Rate the five characters from the most offensive to the least objectionable.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.Abigail, Gregory, Sinbad, Ivan, Slug. Okay, then... 1. Sinbad--Just because she WAS asking for it doesn't make rape any less of a crime. 2. Gregory--Way to stand up for your "lover", you a**. =/ Granted, the situation between Abigail and Sinbad does sound suspicious looking from his point of view, but... if she'd really been having a love affair with him, I doubt she'd be so quick to tell. 3. Abigail--Tough call between her and Slug, but I'll say her because a) Love doesn't require sexy outfits and b) She's only going to inspire more hatred by laughing at the beating. 4. Slug--The only thing I think he's guilty for is being too passionate and a bit stupid. Gregory was an a**, sure, but I don't think he deserved to be punished quite like that. 5. Ivan--I really don't see him doing anything wrong here. But, maybe that's because I feel that's what I'd have done in his situation. And that's how I see it.

1) Abigail - Although hurt by Gregory's words, she still laughed and was overjoyed as her lover was brutally beaten up by Slug.
2) Sinbad - The only reason he doesn't get the top slot is because of Abigail's laughter in the end. He was pretty much the center of all the issues by being unable to control his lust and making Abigail decide between alligators and himself.
3) Gregory - If he really loved her, then he would have cared for her, not "cast her aside with disdain". Abigail risked herself to see him, and he just flat out rejects her.
4) Slug - He was driven strongly by his emotions... a little too strongly. Still, he was there for Abigail, so I give him credit for that.
5) Ivan - He wasn't really involved at all because he chose not to be... He really didn't do anything wrong.

1 (most offensive) is Abigail because he dresses badly so she is just asking for trouble. Even though she has a bad feeling about sinbad she goes on the boat with him anyways putting herself in danger (she should have told him to take greg over to her). She doesn't really love Greg since she let sinbad (be) with her (where is the desperate fight where bad guys gets thrown overboard a girl steers boat to her beloved...wait wrong story.) Last thing is that when Greggory rejects her for being unclean and dressing bad she seeks out slug to beat him up and she is laughing at it all. Seems like she wanted it to happen in the end. 2. (second most offensive) Sinbad for having evil intentions from the start and taking advantage of Abigail. 3. Slug for beating up Greggory for Abilail even though he's a black belt (meaning he has far more experience fighting than the average person) and martial arts are used to defend one self and not to start fights. 2. Greggory - Only bad thing I could see about him was the way he rejected Abigail. He possibly could have been more understanding of her situation and even though he doesn't want to be her boyfriend anymore he could have helped her as a friend at least instead of just throwing her aside. 1. (least offensive) is Ivan because he chose to not take part in the situation there for he wasn't hurt or hurting anyone. Because he was Abigail's friend I'm sure he wanted to help her but if he did he might have been hurt or killed so he was smart to not get involved.

I love this idea Kurai! We need things like this more often. I'm curious to see everyone's post tomorrow... Edit: time to add reasoning!
1-Sinbad: Threatening to kill someone for his own pleasures? Rape? Failure. 2-Abigail: I really don't think that her clothes should condemn her so much as the fact that she was apparently in "love" with Gregory and then has him beat up and laughs at him doesn't make it sound like she was really in love (more like lust). Which makes her all of her actions look selfish and wrong. 3-Gregory: So all rape victoms deserve to be raped? I put Gregory below Abigail because he doesn't seem to be in love with her which somewhat lessens his blow, but he does show a lack of compassion to humankind regardless. 4-Slug: Beating someone up even if they deserve it or you think so is still bad, but at least he was doing it for a reason he thought was justifiable. 5-Ivan: He might not be a very good friend, but he didn't wrong anyone at the end of the day (he just didn't do anything right either). Ultimately, all the characters should be responsible for their actions (Abigail, not him).

1.) Abigail - This woman is very fickle with her emotion. She put her emotion first instead of using her judgment. She knew she couldn't trust Sinbad, but she went on the boat because she wanted to be with Gregory. And she sleep with Sinbad because she was afraid of alligator. Furthermore, she had Gregory get beaten up because he hurt her feelings and she laughed at Gregory getting beat up. It seems that this woman is dimmed on her judgment than her emotion.
2.) Sinbad - He raped her. That's all. He couldn't resist the temptation and his hormones due to the way Abigail dressed. Not to mention, he's a control-abusive person by verbally threatened her if she refused.
3.) Slug - This guy is either dumb or didn't get the full story from Abigail. Even though he beat up Gregory for dumping her, he should at least know why he dumped her in the first place. So it's either Abigail didn't tell him the whole story of her being raped or not.
4.) Gregory - This man is too much pride in himself. He cast her away due to her appearance. And seeing Abigail as unclean (due to the rape) and look like a slut, he believed that she's below class to his standard. The man knew that she was raped due to the way she dress, but he never ask her why she wear that.
5.) Ivan - At least he's intelligent to stay out of the situation. However, he should at least find another solution of helping her get across the lake if he's a closed friend of her.

Gregory - Even after Abigail went through all of that for him, he still shunned her. Karma's a b***h. Sinbad - Driven by his own lusts. Exercise some control, man! Ivan - While doing nothing is better than doing something stupid, apathy can sometimes be more dangerous than action. Especially if he's such a 'good friend'. Slug - Took matters into his own hands and exacted justice. Violence isn't the answer, but his heart was in the right place. Abigail - Driven by love, she did some stupid things. But honestly, haven't we all been there?

All right! biggrin Thank you all for your input. Now for what you've been waiting for: Part 2!
Now, based off of your responses, I'd like to put up the results of the number 1 offender:
1. Sinbad (11 votes, though I'm confused about Huey's.) 2. Abigail (6 votes) 3. Slug and Gregory (1 vote, though Huey's vote is confusing...) 4. Ivan (no votes.)
Here's the question that the prompt poses- who do you most relate to? Based off of in-class survey of 57 people, my Group Communications class (where I took this test myself!) came up with shocking similarities in who a person related to and who received the highest score.
Still others did not relate to characters at all.
- Oddly, the women in the class who dressed in the most provocative manner often stated Abigail as 'having deserved it' for the articles of clothing she was wearing. Men who claimed to have had extremely bad breakups with women also seemed to antagonize her. Yes, we asked. We're terribly nosy but open people.
- Men in the class that were... how shall we say... larger (much stronger than the rest of us, I'm sure) often related to Slug, and thought of Abigail as a bit of a manipulator. However, they also mentioned that Gregory 'deserved to get his a** beat' for hurting her, and she was often placed fairly low on their list.
- Those with very close co-dependence on friends often placed Ivan's blame much higher than others. While others saw his refusal to intervene as completely normal, those (such as myself) who often collaborate ideas with friends before executing them saw this as the ultimate betrayal. Gregory was also placed fairly high in these lists.
- There were no sympathizers with Sinbad, naturally. 90% of people, under group scrutiny, will place him on top of their lists. The physical assault is a huge part of this, as he is the only one who outright breaks several social taboos in this exercise. Surprisingly, however, though many people placed Sinbad atop their lists individually, the numbers spiked from 60% individually to 90% once they tried to come up with lists as a group. The other name that had taken first position were varied, but it was an interesting quirk.
------------------------------
For public information, I hereby disclose my own list and reasons. :3
1. Ivan- As stated previously, my friends and I have always been an extremely trusting, close-knit group. If someone says that they're going to do something stupid, we stop them. If they're going into a dangerous area, we'll either talk them out of it or go with them to assure their safety. The breech of trust that he showed illustrated a complete disregard for her personal safety, as he could have dissuaded her from going or could have gone with her to protect her from the lecherous Sinbad.
His lack of action was more of an attack than Sinbad's, in my opinion.
2. Gregory- Again, trust is the issue. Abigail could have hidden what had happened to her, and yet she trusted him enough to divulge the information. She took the lengths to see him, not the other way around. And yet, after these two very big investments, he tossed her away as if she was nothing, telling her indirectly that he didn't care WHAT she thought or did- she was worthless.
All for trust, too. It was a backhand from her beloved, and was a spineless thing for him to do. The natural thing for him to have done should have been to comfort her after a traumatic experience, not push her away.
3. Sinbad- Yes, what he did was atrocious, but there was no breech of trust and there was fairly adequate warning of what he was going to do from the start. Though a scumbag, there was plenty of advance warning, versus the above two's sudden betrayals.
4. Abigail- No girl deserves to get raped, no matter what she's wearing. Though she eventually gave her consent, there wasn't exactly much of an option. Had Ivan convinced her to wear at least something more decent, perhaps she might have gotten out of the situation, but for her, the end of meeting Gregory justified the means. She was willing to humiliate herself to meet a man she trusted- though not admirable by any means, her initial intentions were pure.
The end result almost seems... natural. Wouldn't you be bitter and wanting to see him suffer after that? Of course, I would have gone home and cried after that, but it's hard to deny that seeing that after getting hurt wouldn't be damn satisfying.
5. Slug- I have a friend like this, only with no belts. A man broke up with my friend, for instance, after cheating on her in his car that was parked in her own driveway! She cried bitterly the entire night, and told us about it the next morning. We were on the verge of taking out bats and taking out his knees, if you catch my drift.
I can see why he acted in the way he did, though there are better ways of handling the situation.

Based off of the information now presented and with the freedom to now go back and highlight others' responses, do your views change? :3

Although I'm late to this, I'm still going to post my line up: 1. Ivan: He didn't really help with her problem at all, and so I think he is the worst of the five. 2. Abigale: Although she tried to see her "lover" she didn't look for easier ways to get across. When Sinbad was looking at her, I feel like that was a really good time to high-tail it out of there. Also, she didn't have to laugh at Greg as well as get the crap beaten out of him. 3. Gregory: Just because your girlfriend gets raped, doesn't mean you can throw her away like that. 4. Sinbad: He poor guy just wanted some sex, plus, he kept his word. 5. Slug: The guy just wanted to fight for his friends. stare
I really don't relate to any one specific person, as I'm sure we all have some part of each of them. I'd have to say I'm a mixture of Ivan, Sinbad, and Slug.
I warn my friends of troubles and what not. I keep to my word. When in need, I fight for my friends. Also, like Sinbad, I want sex.

Even though I did put Sinbad as number 1, since he's a rapist, my number 2 was Ivan... and like Kurai said, my explanation revolved around the idea that he completely betrayed and abandoned his supposed "close" friend. As a friend, he should've been looking out for her, even though it could have put himself in danger... because that's what friends do..
