He settled down beside her, using his good wing to cover her, partly to keep her warm, partly to simply be closer to her. They had been through quite an ordeal, and he felt like he could lose her any second, like she was fragile enough to be swept away by the cool breeze. How had this happened? How had their happiness been so quickly shoved aside? Was this, too, a result of their mixed bloodlines, a punishment bestowed on them because they were different?
No. It was not that. Cobalt refused to believe that they were attacked simply because they weren't exactly normal.
He looked over to Airlia, knowing now exactly what she meant to him, knowing that her brave words were shrouded in the uncertain, and came to a realization. "If you rest, you won't ever get back up, will you." Cobalt said, his voice bitter. "Airlia...there is no other choice. Although, I don't want to leave you here alone...I don't see any other option. Unless..." He looked at his still-bleeding wing. "You could...take my blood."
If she insisted that he stay, he would. But he would not allow her to die...even if it required that she take some of his blood. He knew she could kill him, after all, he had seen what happened to the coyote. Perhaps this would shock her into letting him go. Or, if not, he trusted her not to kill him. Either way, she would live. And that was more important to him than whatever might happen to himself.
"Airlia. Let me help you, one way or another. I don't want to watch you die." He couldn't bear to witness her draw her last breath at his side. He would forever lose himself, never be whole again. "Besides, I'll be fine. Regardless of which option you choose. I'm not afraid."
He blamed himself for this. If he had been stronger, he could have been able to protect the one he loved.

Airlia continued to stare, a slow scowl almost appearing on her brow as she tried hard to decipher if he was bluffing or not. Her heart picked up the pace as the sudden warmth of his wing draped over her side, enjoying the second time she was able to feel close to him. Sadly, he wasn't bluffing as she quickly diverted her gaze to a blade of grass between her legs. Take blood.....from him?
No! Was he f*cking stupid?!
Although she had been forced to be taking the blood of animals since for as long as she could remember, never had she attempted to take it from an actual soquili without them losing their life in the process. She could barely controll her blood frenzy, who could say that she wouldn't accidentally take his life in the process? She couldn't do it, she wouldn't do it! If it were anyone else she might have given it a shot in such dire circumstances....yet she'd hobble her own a** out and hunt now than even concider option two any further.
"No. I won't. Don't ever consider that option again." She half hissed as a blatant warning, obviously a little upset as her mind seemed to be slipping away from her due to the shock of such a request.
However....immediately as the guilt washed over her, she looked further away and turned her head towards a very 'interesting' looking tree. "I don't think so...." No, she could feel it in her soul that if she fell asleep now her body would simply slow then shut down completely. The gods didn't really leave an instruction manual with her curse...but she had a really good intuition on what would happen. "I'd rather that than end up taking your stupid life because I can't controll myself when in a feeding state. You saw what happened..." Hell, she almost got herself attacked the last time she fed; so lost in the overwhelming euphoric state it left her in. It was strange how affections changed the importance of self preservation into second place compared to the keeper of said emotions.
Don't you think its time you let him in...?
"Fine!" She snapped after a bit of deliberation; if he was going to be such a stubborn jackass and she just as much as one...there was no winning between the two. Someone would cave sooner or later...it seemed this time it would be her. "Go out there then, hunt...." As much as she didn't want him to. However....
Snapping her head back in his direction she held a powerful look in her face; one of seriousness, fear, determination and of course full of attitude. "You better come back, Cobalt - with or without a kill. If you don't; i'll personally come out there and kill you myself." The ivory mare huffed, it was probably as close as showing she cared as one would get in her present mindframe...but she meant well. Curling her wings under his own to wrap around her body for warmth, she let her gaze fall; knowing she'd have to take on the task of staying awake while he was gone now.

Cobalt leaned in, offering her a gentle nuzzle. "Wait for me...I swear to you that I will return." He got up gently, feeling a twinge of sadness as he gently lifted his wings off of her. She needed him...he wanted to stay with her, but he knew that he could serve her better by hunting for her. Cobalt glanced back over his shoulder as he ran into the forest, savoring a last glance at the mare who had captured his heart. He silently vowed to tell her the truth upon his return, to tell her how he felt about her. She had a right to know.
The branches of the trees brushed against Cobalt's coat, snagging in his torn wing. But he ignored the pain, pressing on through the forest in search of an animal large enough to suit Airlia's needs.
After what seemed like hours of searching, he spotted a 4-point buck in a clearing. His heart beating fast, he suppressed a shudder of guilt at what he was about to do. He had taken a life once before, only once. The memory still haunted him, the bleating cry that escaped the lips of his kill as it drew it's last breath...
Cobalt shook his head, clearing it of his unwanted thoughts. He wasn't doing this for himself. He would do this for her, for Airlia, because she needed it. He would not feel guilty this time.
He crept up behind the buck as quietly as he could, and when the moment was right, lunged for the jugular. His aim was true, but the buck refused to go down without a fight. The buck twisted it's head, and sharp antlers dug into Cobalt's neck, scraping down one side and leaving his skin hanging down in strips.
Wincing in agony, Cobalt suppressed the cry that would have allowed his prey to escape. He held fast, clamping down with his fangs until the buck fell still. Covered in fresh blood, both his and the buck's, Cobalt felt the bloodlust rise in him again, clouding his vision red. With a forced effort, Cobalt ignored it, the strain sending shivers down his body.
Lifting the buck, Cobalt slung it across his back, yelping as his injured wing was crushed against the buck's flanks. He steeled his resolve, and began walking back towards Airlia, praying he had the strength to reach her side.

...And wait she would, untill literally her last dying breath escaped from her parched lips.
His touch was like fire against her cheek, sparking the flames already raging in her frame. Her breath caught in her throat for a moment as he rose tall and strong, taking off in a gallop which caused him to dissapear into the darkness of the forest. Yet what was more was that look - that glance back over his shoulder which when her eyes met his own her heart skipped an unhealthy beat or two. There he went, off to hunt for her as she lay in her own bloody filth in order to keep her alive.
What good she was, her parents would be disgusted with her.
But that look....there was something about it that even she could not deny. She'd began to notice the change from their first meeting, what had once been unbridled sorrow and lonliness had slowly began to form into contentment and comfort. Happiness was soon to follow as she could swear his eyes lit up like the very stars in the sky at dusk around her, at her slightest and smallest of smiles.
But now....now there was something more. A longing....desire. She knew it all too well from her mother even though she was a crazed loon, the way she looked at the heavens as if someone was looking back at her with the same goofy expression. Huffing as a gentle smirk stretched across her tired maw, she could remember asking her once what she was doing always looking at the stars.
"But mom....they don't change very often. Doesn't it get boring?" She'd asked, inexperienced in her foal years.
"Nimue isn't watching....no, no, no. Nimue can't pray, so instead she can wish on stars!" The ivory mare with the beautiful raven locks replied, only earning a snort from her daughter.
Wishing on stars had always seemed so damn foolish to Airlia, and even as she looked up to them now...she couldn't help but see just that - stars. Yet, from what she'd gathered, her mother was now happy as can be; so perhaps wishing on stars wasn't such a bad idea after all?
Looking back towards where Cobalt had taken off to what seemed like ages ago, the ivory mare tossed her tired head up to the heavens and picked out a star that she deemed to be better than the rest. Lowering her head onto the ground she closed her eyes from the world and began to think about what she was wishing for....struggling to keep awake even though to any onlookers her unmoving and still form made it seem like she'd fallen asleep; or worse.

Each step was agony.
The deer dug into his wing with each footfall. And he was so terribly exhausted...he ached everywhere. His body screamed for rest, his hooves leaving shallow grooves in the earth as they dragged behind him. He gritted his teeth and plowed harder through the forest. Airlia needed him. And he would rather push himself to the brink of exhaustion than allow her to die.
She was the light of his life, regardless of how dark she seemed to think she was. She was different than anyone he had ever met. She accepted him, all of him, exactly the way he was. She made his pulse race, and gave him a reason to be alive. He would never forgive himself if he gave up on her, not when she was waiting on him.
So he shoved away his pain, his exhaustion. He focused on her, and he found the strength to keep moving. One step, then another, then another. The seconds seemed to crawl by, and the longer he was gone, the more he worried about Airlia. How much longer could she hold out? She was a strong mare, for certain, but...she had been injured. She was fading, and the thought of living without her sent terror through his heart.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, he found his way back to the clearing where his beloved lay. His vision blurry with exhaustion, he saw her pale ivory figure, lying deathly still.
No...
Anxious, he rushed to her side, dumping the carcass on the ground a few feet from her. Paying no heed to his injuries, he threw himself down beside her. "Airlia? ...My love...please, tell me you're alright..." He waited breathlessly for her reply, ever fiber of his being hoping beyond hope that she was still alive.

As eternity had finally passed since the blue stallion had left her side in order to save her life, and even as the mare lay in her deathly still position; she had joust ed slightly into the real world as he approached.
Her ears gave a small flick as a loud thump of what could only be a carcass dropped near her body, feeling the tingling in her spine as the mare could feel Cobalt's presence roughly drop beside her. Had he done it? Immediately she wondered how he was feeling as she was well aware the task must have not been an easy one for him. Physically due to his injuries and not to mention the mental anguish he'd experienced before the last time he was around blood and death. Yet before she could even open her eyes to let him know she was indeed still alive and awake....she'd heard it.
My love...
His what!? Airlia couldn't believe what she was hearing, she knew their feelings were evolving....but she didn't think he loved her yet! The very words made her cheeks turn as rosey as her blood hued locks as her eyes slowly opened to look up at him in a bit of an astonished shock.
"I-im....awake, Cobalt." She made sure to quickly usher out, to calm his anxiousness. "I didn't...mean to startle you. I was making a wish on a star and closed my eyes in concentration..." Again, an embarassed look crossed her facial features, but was soon diverted when she saw the carcass. Immediately she pushed her body forth and clamped down on the buck's neck, desperately sucking in the sweet blood through her fangs. Like magic the white mare felt her energy restore and grow, life returning to her eyes through such a gruesome act.
Taking what she needed to clear her out of critical and into the clear she turned her body back to Cobalt and nearly tossed herself at him, her cheek tenderly nuzzling against his own before she spotted it. That gruesome wound on his neck, probably from the buck. "Cobalt...." she whispered lightly, obviously concerned and guilty that he'd gotten it because of her.
"Let me help you..." It wouldn't be much, but it would help. Pressing her horn against his wound she once again allowed her unicorn blood to take over, lighting up her spiraled horn in an eerie red hue as his muscle and skin slowly re-attached, leaving only minor papercut like wounds. She wished she could do more for him, but the unicorn's blood was too dilluted and thus there was only so much she could do with her limited power. Once she was finished, she once more repositioned herself to have access to the buck's neck but still able to see Cobalt as she fed.
"Thank you....by the way. I am still in awe as to the kindness you continue to show me....but I must ask....what do you mean when you spoke of me as....well......your love?" If she had hopes of the blush that stained her cheeks to leave she was sure they were gone now.
Airlia would also have to apologise to her mother as well....wishing on a star had made her wish indeed come true afterall.

Relief flooded through him when she opened her eyes. Alive...she was still alive. Immediately, a smile spread across his face. He had come back in time.
A wish on a star?
It was an odd sort of thing to do, something he hadn't heard her speak of before. Maybe she was delirious, as such an effect could be produced by her current state. He frowned. Or maybe there was another reason. She didn't talk about her past much...he would ask her about it later. No sense worrying over something that could easily be explained.
Besides, he was more intrigued by the charming blush that had spread across her lovely porcelain features. He glimpsed it for a few short moments before she turned towards the buck that would be her lifeline, bringing her back from the border of death. Cobalt averted his eyes, not wanting to see any more blood spilled. He had seen more than enough for one day. Instead, he closed his eyes for a moment, allowing himself to rest. He had pushed his body to it's physical limits, and exhaustion was setting in.
His eyes opened at her touch, and he returned her nuzzle fondly. The sound of his name on her lips sent shivers racing through his body. "It's nothing..." He would heal. He always did, and while the neck injury was serious, it wasn't life-threatening. Nonetheless, he was grateful as his wound healed, the pain easing as his muscle and skin knitted back together.
This time, when she turned back to the buck, his eyes followed her. Whatever she had done had stolen some of the exhaustion from his bones, and his gaze lingered on her, a silly smile on his face. The blush was still present on her ivory cheeks, and that was the reason for his somewhat goofy expression.
His own cheeks reddened when she confronted him about what he had said. While he had said the words in desperation, fearing she had passed into the void, they were no less true. He had grown to love her...and now, anxiousness filled him again as he wondered if it was too soon for such professions, and if she would be driven away by his words.
He spoke softly, a tender expression in his eyes. "I've known for a while now that I cared about you, far deeper than I thought I could care for anyone. Almost losing you showed me what you really mean to me...I love you, Airlia."
He felt as if he had bared his very soul for her judgment. All he could do was wait...wait to see how she felt about him, and hope that she felt the same.

As her world opened up like a new chapter of a book, Airlia could only stop and stare in what would easily be described as in awe. All of their adventures, hardships and unusual friendship has boiled away and in the words of Cobalt himself....there was love. A love which was so raw and rare in souls like themselves, cast from society to find the only lifeboat in one another. His red cheeks was enough to send her heart constricting painfully, he really was throwing himself body, heart and soul for her judgement....to accept his love or to cast him away like she did everyone else in her life.
Could she really do that to him, the one who she owed her life to?
The one who maybe....she was starting to feel the same about?
"Cobalt..." The words fell out of her lips in a speechless mannor, wanting so badly to turn away from his loving eyes; her reflexes to void confrontation and run making her leg twitch lightly. No! She wouldn't run, not from him. She couldn't....just couldnt. Through the whirling vortex which was her emotions, the mare left the buck's side and crawled slowly infront of Cobalt. Staring into his eyes with her own intense gaze, her head found its way to rest their foreheads together (careful with her horn of course) before she spoke.
"I don't know what to say...I know three little words that want to come out, but they are silenced by this overwhelming confusion and doubt that someone could really, sincerely love me. Love isn't something thats been in my life in the slightest." With a mother and father, and siblings like hers....well dysfunctional family didn't even cover it anymore.
"Yet how can I not love you....you're sweet, caring, protective, kind....everything i've only dreamed of having in my life. Maybe...i've been telling my heart that I don't want you, that we can't be together....but the truth is, I can't lie to myself that I don't miss you when you're gone...when I can't see or touch you. T-that I can't feel what I feel because I am a monster...." At this point, the tears began to fall from the mare's dark eyes, her own soul pouring out from its protective shell, vulnerable to the world.
"My life will always be affected by my heritage, with my mother being the Angeni of Dispair....but if by some praise of the higher powers to grant me even a glimmer of happiness in my life....its been you Cobalt. I don't know how to love, or be loved.....but i'll try for you. I'd do...anything for you damnit!" Frustrated and flusted, the mare drew her face back and furled her wings up to hide her sobbing face.
Unfortunately, she couldn't see those three words coming out of her lips anytime soon, but she could only hope he could read them between her other words; because they were surely there.

A slow, crooked smile stretched on Cobalt's face. His heart overflowed as he realized that she did love him, even if she couldn't say it. His heart beat fast in his ears as she moved in close, resting her forehead against his.
"Don't feel rushed, or pressured. You don't have to say those words to me...your actions speak them to me with your every breath."
She had pulled away, hiding her tear-streaked face in her wings. He reached out gently, nuzzling his way close until his nose was touching hers. "You don't have to do anything but be yourself, Airlia...it is you that I love, not anything you would do for me." He smiled at her, pushing her wings back further.
"Such a pretty face should never be hidden." He whispered, nuzzling her wet cheek. "Airlia, you are my light, my beautiful flower...you are passionate and strong, and have so much good in you. I would do anything to keep you safe, anything at all for you. You captivated me from the moment I met you."
His blood rushing through his veins, intoxicated with the knowledge that she loved him too, although she couldn't say so, he pressed himself closer. Slowly, gently, he moved closer, giving her time to push him away if she wasn't ready.
"You say you have never felt love..." His voice was thick, his eyes fastened on hers. "Let me show you what it feels like."

He understood...but in reality, did she really expect him not to? A wave of releif washed over the mare as she felt that he'd keep her heart safe, since she would gladly kill any who tried to take his away from her. Ohhh, they would definately suffer a slow and very painful death.
With her shield soon penetrated by his nose, a faint smile brushed against her lips as she realized it must have looked strange to see her own head hidden in her wings, and his head vanished in them as well. A bit of a flattered look crossed her face, beautiful flower? Well that was new, monster, freak, b***h....but never called something along those lines. It felt...nice, real nice.
At the nuzzle her own heart began to pound in her chest, raising her temperature to once again form the blush on her cheeks. Even as he approached and her nerves once again urged her to lash out at the invasion...she did no such thing. Instead she openly stared, a bit like a lost lamb as she wandered into a whole new, unfamiliar territory. However, with Cobalt as her sheperd, she'd follow him diligently till the ends of the earth.
"Cobalt..." Airlia all but managed to whisper as she let down her defences, pushing her face into his mane as she gave herself up to him, for once...not wanting it all to end as she lavished under the love and adoration.
Yet....with what was to come from a night of passion she would sorely become aware of its circumstances and concequences.
