Meleager had waited feeling accustomedly anxious, shifting restlessly on his hooves again, but when Castor answered his face broke into a smile again. For a moment he said nothing - couldn't even think what to say - and then he swallowed and said, "Thank you. That... means a lot."

He laughed sheepishly and added, "I might not have gone about that the best way. It's been a while." Longer than he cared to remember, but that didn't matter now. This was a new start. It was exciting, but still... delicate. Now was not the time to reminisce about previous partners, or to go into details about this. The complicated bits could wait, and as well he'd rather not keep just standing around here. The muscled Reya sighed, and smiled at Castor. "Would you like to eat now?" he suggested.

The lanky stallion smiled back and nodded. “Yes, I think that’s a good idea, as I say I’ve not had too much as yet today.” Plus, of course, eating made talking more difficult and therefore gave him plenty of time to think before the possibility of questions about, err, things came up. He wasn’t sure what the questions would be, or even really what they might be about but he had a feeling that they would be difficult ones to answer. Meleager would understand to a degree of course, Meleager seemed to understand him rather well really, but he didn’t want to ruin this new direction their relationship was taking by saying something wrong.

Meleager smiled. "Okay." Turning around, he crossed to the tree beneath which lay the pile of fruit. It looked good; there was more than one meal's worth there, a mixture of elppas, sweet-water fruit, sanguidrops, and others. All were ripe and fresh. The herdleader grinned to himself. Being in charge was great, especially when it meant you could order the best fruit to be selected and taken where you wanted it, and nobody asked why. The civilian mare he'd given the task to would be rewarded well for this result.

The dappled Reya glanced up and smiled at Castor. He really was very attractive, and just seeing him - seeing him now - made the grey stallion happy. It was too long since he'd felt like this. "Go ahead," he said with a gesture at the fruit. "I've eaten, so it's all yours."

Meleager stretched, then neatly folded his legs beneath him and sat down. The awkward bit, the stressful bit, was over now - he could relax.

Castor smiled back and nodded before moving over to the fruit and dipping his head to begin eating. He wouldn’t be able to eat all of this, of course, but that left some for breakfast which was always good; when you had your breakfast planned in the evening there was more time in the morning to do other things. One such thing now, of course, would be spending more time with Meleager. He’d heard more or less how courting went, of course, but it would be good to experience it in person. He hoped, at the moment, that the relationship would last. So far as he was aware, he liked the grey stallion very well already and there was the potential for real love there, not something he’d ever expected to find for himself, different as he was.

As he finished munching an elppa, the pale-coloured stallion raised his eyes to inspect Meleager again. Humm. Should he try to talk about something now?... No, no better to just smile, he smiled, and keep eating. If Meleager wanted to talk, the herdleader would doubtless start the conversation himself.

This was nice. Meleager watched Castor unobtrusively as the younger stallion ate, feeling for once free to admire him. He glanced away in a moment of mild embarassment when Castor looked up, but smiled back. Castor was smiling; that was good. It looked, so far as the herdleader could tell, completely genuine; and that was good too. He had known that Castor wouldn't allow himself to be courted just because Meleager was the herdleader, and that was reassuring. Now that'd he'd said yes... it meant that this was real, and that was most definitely good. He hoped it would last. He liked Castor, a lot.

But there were certain practical considerations to be dealt with. He might be happy, but it was by no means certain that many or most of the herd would have the same opinion. He was their herdleader, after all, and he had a duty to produce an heir. The muscled Reya sighed and looked up at Castor. "I was hoping we could keep this to ourselves, for now," he said, then belatedly remembered that Castor and his father were close, and that he might want to tell him. "Except for family, of course," he added hurriedly.

For himself, there was no one Meleager wished to tell. He had no idea how he would broach the subject with Iris, he had no relatives left, and the one remaining member of the council, whom he might have considered telling if she had been present, was off chasing his good-for-nothing exile of a daughter. The dappled stallion sighed to himself. That was irrelevant, though - right now, this was more important.

Castor paused in his eating, raised his head and nodded. “Of course, whatever you feel is best Meleager... Do you think I should tell Ignatius as well? He told me to tell him anything that might be relevant to keeping me safe... do you think this would count? I’m not certain myself, so I’m happy to go along with whatever you would prefer.” He trusted that the scaled stallion would keep his mouth shut if he was told, but in all honestly he wasn’t sure if it did matter in that sense or not. He was surely no more likely now than before to do something foolish for the dappled stallion’s sake... though to be fair, he hadn’t told Ignac about his initial interest in the herdleader. Hum. Well he would wait to hear what Meleager said about informing his guard of their relationship. If he preferred to keep it quite, telling the mutant that he was at least interested in the dark-eyed stallion was probably a good plan.

"Um..." He hadn't thought about that. But Ignatius did spend a lot of time with Castor, and it might be easier if he knew... Meleager was fairly sure the scaled stallion wasn't the type to spread gossip. He shrugged. "I don't know if it's relevant... but given the amount of time you two spend together, it might be best for him to know. It's up to you, really. I expect he can be trusted not to spread it around."

The dappled Reya stood up slowly, and stretched, spreading his wings and refolding them flat against his back. Watching where he put his feet - it was growing dim under the trees - he stepped around the fruit and close to Castor. Almost close enough to touch - and it was tempting - but first, he had to ask. "We spoke about this before," Meleager reminded the tactician, unable to keep a hint of an anxious frown from his face. "Do you really think the herd will accept this? ...us?"

Having eaten enough for now, Castor raised his head and, hoping that he didn’t have any fruit stains on his face, turned to meet the other stallion’s eyes. He did not, however, move any closer than Meleager had; he didn’t mean to seem standoffish, it was just instinct to keep a respectful distance between himself and anyone else. Perhaps if they were to keep this a secret it was better for that instinct to remain in any case.

“I shall consider telling Ignatius-hellene,” the blue stallion said eventually, “and I see no reason why the herd would not accept us. Perhaps it will comfort them to know that the next leader of the herd will be chosen for merit rather than bloodline, and if that is not a concern to them either way then I see no reason for them to deny you your happiness. Or me, naturally, but as the herdleader your choice of mate is clearly of more interest then mine is.”

Perhaps the dappled Reya would even take his input on choosing the next herdleader; that would be an honour indeed, and it would be a pleasure to help Meleager in any way he was able to, he was sure.

Meleager smiled, although some of what Castor had said worried him a little. He hadn't quite thought about the heir situation. Castor seemed to be assuming he would choose an heir from the herd. He supposed that was one option, but it wasn't really what he wanted to do. He liked foals, after all, and he'd always assumed he'd be a father many times over. He'd just been unlucky, that was all. And now...

Things were just a little more complicated, that was all. It wasn't a conversation they needed to have now. The herdleader met Castor's eyes again, and smiled properly. "I'm glad you think that; I hope you're right, too. I expect you will be... but it doesn't matter for now."

He held eye contact for a moment, then moved forward slowly - gods knew he didn't want to startle Castor. The grey stallion's eyes closed slowly as he let the tip of his nose brush against the slim crossbreed's neck: strange and new as the physical closeness was, it felt good. And they were hidden, private. No one knew they were here, they couldn't give themselves away - and he couldn't hold himself back any longer.

He’d never been much good at the whole physical contact thing. It wasn’t that he disliked it so much as... well he wasn’t ever quite sure how to react. For now, the crossbreed decided as he tentatively returned the nuzzle, it would be best just to mimic Meleager; doubtless he would pick up how this sort of thing was supposed to go eventually. Having sorted this out in his mind, the lanky stallion relaxed internally a little, he did like to have a plan, and settled into enjoying the closeness. It was... strange, but a good sort of strange. Unfamiliar rather than unsettling.

“You’re right,” Castor said eventually, not moving away from the new strange closeness to meet the other stallion’s eyes, “for now what people might or might not think isn’t important. If we do ever make this public knowledge, we can concern ourselves about public opinion there and then.” He, of course, would consider possibilities but he wouldn’t mention them unless asked, and if he came up with unpleasant ones he wouldn’t let them trouble him. It was to be a secret after all; nobody could think anything bad of them if they were a secret.

A flash of brightness caught the crossbreed’s attention then, and he turned his head to inspect it, quickly deducing that it had been sunlight on the lake. Ah. Castor raised his eyes to the sky and smiled a little. “The sun is setting,” he observed, “I think it makes everything rather lovely.”

Sunset was romantic, or so stories and besotted lovers told him. Well it was a very pretty time of day, and with the light faded the responsibilities of the day leaving just you and your beau to enjoy one another’s company... It was probably less complex than that, more innate but if it wasn’t innate to him, then there was no harm in finding a logical reason to find sunset with Meleager pleasing. Perhaps, however, he wouldn’t voice his musings on the matter; it would probably kill the mood.

Meleager stepped back slightly as Castor moved, and followed his gaze to the lake and the rosy sky above it. The water sparkled through the screen of branches, throwing up orange and gold reflections. It was beautiful, and he quite agreed with Castor. Smiling, the grey stallion lowered his eyes from the sky. "It is lovely," he echoed, "Would you like to find a better spot to watch it?"

Sunrise and sunset, natural beauty - the herdleader always enjoyed observing such things. They couldn't be rushed; they proceeded at their own pace, forcing him to relax as he watched. He couldn't relax completely this evening - not with the excitement of something still so new running through him - but he was happy, still. It could hardly have been more blissful; the setting, the company... Meleager smiled. He didn't mind what Castor wanted to do. For once he was simply content.

Castor smiled at his companion and nodded, brushing one of his muscular tails against the other stallion’s flank. “Yes,” he added after a moment, “I’d like that.” Unable to think of anything else to say for the time being, the tall crossbreed smiled again and waited for Meleager to lead him to a different spot; doubtless the herdleader had some nice secluded place in mind.

Perhaps said place, along with this spot, would become a special place for them. Perhaps he wouldn’t be spending much time here, perhaps he’d rest in Meleager’s home patch instead. Yes, that could work well; he could stay with Meleager, and his father could stay here thus the spot would still be lived in, wouldn’t go to waste. The future seemed to be opening out before him, like the first sight of wide open D’ob after stepping out of Yisi. Anything could happen, any direction could be taken and whatever direction he did go in, he would go in good company. He could understand now, more or less, the big fuss that was made over finding a partner. Having a confidant, a person to laugh with and talk with, and to simply stand in silence with to watch the sun go down.

He hadn’t ever really expected to get to experience such things himself, he wasn’t the type for relationships or hadn’t been until now at any rate. Castor looked over to Meleager again and smiled slightly; usually big changes worried him no end but this... this was different, and although he didn’t really know what he was doing everything felt oddly easy. Perhaps this was the way such things were supposed to work. Castor made a mental note to ask at some point, but not any point tonight; for now there was sunset to enjoy.

Castor looked upward again with another smile; it was the most beautiful sky he had ever seen.
