Trying to sleep; Talon decided it was a rather pointless exercise when one lived next door to several hellhounds. For reasons she couldn't fathom and didn't really care to ponder, the literal dogs from hell, purchased most likely at one of those ever more frequently appearing pet shops in Barton, decided that they must howl all night long in order to communicate with another of their brethren who lived several blocks away. Naturally, several other neighbours had complained to the authorities about this; but seeing as anyone with the correct cash flow could buy their way out of trouble nothing was ever done.

Thus Talon lay in her hammock staring at the ceiling wondering if perhaps moving into this house despite it's being located at an energy centre was wise. So far she'd gotten no sleep, had to complain about the paper boy three times and had been forced to use alternative persuasive methods in convincing her nosy next-door neighbour Mrs. Pealy to stop coming over and trying to socialise. The woman was a menacing 100 pounds of wrinkles, with sceptical emerald eyes and what Talon would swear on her deathbed was the same periwinkle blue dress.

Several thuds caused Talon to roll over and look out her balcony door. The full moon made it easy to see the small sparrow beating its wings pitifully. Each time it got airborne it would fly back into the glass again. Talon sighed; a new chemical plant had had a spill a few months ago and the chemical had gotten into the soil. This got into the grass, which the grasshoppers ate, and into the grasshoppers, which the sparrows ate. Naturally this resulted in rather odd and dangerous behaviour for the poor creatures.

Talon sat up and grabbed the strange glass shard she had acquired a few days ago off of her dresser. A stange glint in her eyes, she carefully got out of the hammock and walked towards the balcony door. By now the sparrow was flopping about on the concrete deck rather pathetically. It's left wing feathers were bent and the wing itself lay at an unnatural angle.

Talon opened the door and looked down at the creature which feeble attempted to move away from her. A cold night breeze blew coppery strands of hair into her eyes but she paid them no mind. Likewise as she knelt down she ignored the freezing cold of the concrete on her bare skin.

"Rest easy little psychopomp, for this night your own death and rebirth is the one you bring message of." She said softly, though with neither compassion nor malice.

To Talon this was a rather unique event she would have liked to study further, however the creature was suffering and to watch a psychopomp suffer would only incite it's brethrens wrath. Fingers grasped carefully around the shard in her hand. Talon was not entirely surprised to see it glow as she used it's sharpest edge to quickly slit the creatures throat and ended it's suffering.

Calmly she wiped the blood off the glass with her fingers then lay it down on the concrete. Standing again Talon turned and walked inside shutting the door. She firmly believed the body would be gone by morning. Returning to her bed she used a Kleenex to wipe the blood off her fingers and then climbed into bed. She shut her eyes and drifted between sleep and waking.

It had been warmed by flame. It had been soaked by water. It had been carried about to and fro, taken to all sorts of rooms of this strange house, watched over by all sorts of strange beings, and never once had it been bored.

Even now, as the bird protected it, things were exciting. So why leave? It had no reason to. It had been perfectly content inside it's shard all this time, never once thinking that perhaps it was time to start a new life.

But for once, it had no say in the matter.

Something was pushing it out, like a mother forcing a child out of her womb. It didn't want to leave, but there was only so much time it was allowed to rest within it's guarded cell while a guardian waited for it, before it was kicked out.

And the shard reacted by hopping up into the air a few times, much like a jumping bean or a fish out of water. It might scare the bird to take a few steps away from it, enough to give the toddler being expelled room as the shard grew and stretched. It's colors vibrated with life, until sitting on the stand was a little boy, looking as though his weight was just about to topple himself, the bird, and the entire stand over.

Life. What was the big deal about it, anyway?

Craaaaack

A line appeared in the base of the stand as it struggled to support the sudden change of weight. Deciding it was not quite safe the green jay soared into the air above the strange boy. It's strange kin had finally appeared and was rather shocking. No feathers only bone and eyes that glowed blue, this was not what it had been expecting . At the same time as the bird flew off, the boy slid down off the stand relieving it of the tremendous pressure it had been under and allowing it to remain upright if severely damaged. He stared up at the green jay and issued a chirrup at his feathered friend. mimicking the boy the jay swooped down and settled on one of the branches of bone.

Talon watched the two with great interest, she had been awaiting the appearance of the creature from inside the shard and he'd definitively made an entrance .The gleaming white of his bone wings held her gaze for a moment before here yes traveled over the rest of him. dark magenta hair was cut close to heas head except for a small section on the left part of his bands a small chunk off which reached down to his chin. His eyes glowed an entrancing ultramarine and Talon tried not to focus on them lest she get focused on them and be unable to stop staring. Such an odd child but to her he was beautiful so dark and cold yet there was a spark of something in him she could feel it. He was awaited that much she could tell by the expression on his face and the way he waved his arms about.

Looking over her shoulder Talon gaged her other charges reactions to the newest family member. Tiwaz had tucked her wings to her back again and was simply watching the boy wide eyed in amazement clutching her orb in both hands. Her eyes kept straying to his wings his most unusual feature. Tode's hazel eyes roamed over the entire boy and the bird sitting atop him but his expression remained neutral as though he were refusing to pass judgment just yet.

Returning her attention to the child she walked closer to him and the jay both of whom were emitting various the calls that came from sparrows. It briefly flashed in her mind that green jays were known for the ability to mimic other birds, so it was possible that they were actually talking in some way. Still she wanted to communicate with her little one before he became imprinted on another " Child can you speak?" she asked voice soft and reassuring ,she figured that as upset as he was soothing calm sounds might help.

The boy's head turned and the ultramarine eyes focused on her "churrrr" he cocked his head to the right and stared at her annoyance still evident on his face. Talon wondered briefly what it was like inside the shard and if perhaps he'd been quite happy there as opposed to oppressed and anxious to come out like she'd thought.

"Can you speak proper words? she inquired . He looked young but old enough to speak at least semi coherently so she figured he ought to be able to respond at least a little to her questioning.

"Bakkk churr' the boy replied and began motioning wildly with his arms " baaaack churr" the boy was becoming more and more distressed as time passed, even the nonstop chatter from the jay could not calm him.

Back eh? Talon thought, yep he was not a happy child and he definitely didn't want to be here. That was somewhat disappointing and she wondered how long it would take him to adjust. Just as she was about to motion the others out of the room so she could talk to him alone Tiwaz moved foreward and spoke up " Why do you wanna go back after all it's sort of nice here and there's good food and everyone is nice to each other and no one will hurt you and what's your name mine is Tiwaz and i'm sort of your sister."

"Back churrrr." He muttered sullenly before responding " Name churrrr?"

Talon was momentarily at a loss, the boy didn't have a name. Tiwaz and Tode had both known their names upon arrival, the feathered friend was nameless though it wasn't a problem but he her new child didn't have a name. Naming things was always hard for Talon, she believed that the name you gave a person stuck with them their entire life that names held a certain energy that changed only when one married or changed their name. What she called the boy would affect him forever in many ways, who was she to chain him so?

Still looking at him and thinking of his past of that night with the shard she knew the answer. He was a psychopomp a harbinger of death and particularly those who brought the dead back to the land of the living. She looked at him dead and alive the reflection of her act of mercy and yet something else as well. Staring into those eyes she knew his name and knew that he would embrace it in some fashion or another. " Welcome Psy, to a rather crazy family."

Psy looked at her for a moment turned his head to chirrup to the jay and after about thirty second of unintelligible chattering he looked at Talon again " I Psy churr." The words sealed his fate, he was named bound to this life now wether he liked it or not. Talon had a damn good feeling that not was going to be the answer for a long time but at least some progress had been made and with patience and the support of the others perhaps Talon could convince Psy that Gaia wasn't exactly a horrible place to be.

Dear journal:

Just a short update, Psy is in a semi better state now. I've been unable to have him interact with any of his kind though and so he is still easily agitated and seems to feel isolated. The only times he is happy is when Riycan is with him. The two are like peas in a pod and when they are together there is no end to their trouble.

Psy chatters nonstop to Riycan who happily babbles back at damn near the speed of light. However they tend to play alone and exclude the others which don't help Psy's lack of socialization. Riycan's is soon to be going to school but I don't feel that Psy is ready for that or that the world is ready to deal with him especially since I don't know all of what he is capable of.

I'm hoping to contact another guardian of one of his kind soon so that he can talk to someone. I know the longer he waits the more anti-social and hateful of this world he becomes. I don't know if anyone can help him but I know I need to give it a shot.

With the help of Talon, Psy placed a peice of paper in a large scrap book. It contained a few words and a photo.

Psy took the glue covered page and gently placed it in the scrap book. Talon had insisted he work on his writing skills. Though Psy was still young becuase Talon didn't feel it was safe for him to go to a daycare she'd decided to teach him the basics of what he'd need to know when he entered regular school. Psy still had a lot to learn but he was happy with what he had written as it had taken time and several tries to get all the letters right.

Dear Diary:

I think I may be making some progress with Psy. On mother's day my anti social little one left the house with Riycan as his escort. In and of itself that was progress since the closest to outside Psy usually gets is the porch. Anyways a half hour later the two returned with a bouqet of flowers for me from Riycan and a bag of candy from Psy. Even more amazing is that candy bag was the same order I always get when I go shopping. Meaning that even if he appears to be moping Psy is paying close attention to the things I say or at least do otherwise he'd not have been able to remember all of my choices. The other children were equally generous in their mothers day gifts and overall I must say that being parent isn't all that bad.

Lets get things nice and sparkling clear. This sarcasm, if I might call it such, does not become you, O my Brothers. As I am your droog and leader I'm entitled to know what goes on eh? Now then, Dim. What does that great big horsey gape of a grin portend" . Alisdare said as he walked across Talon's living room portraying Alex from A Clockwork Orange. The child of an old friend Umbra, had been bitten by the acting bug again and was performing several small sets of lines form various palys he'd been in much to her charges enjoyment.

The young man was a sight to behold, rich bronze skin and vibrant green hair with dark pink tips. Adding to the stange set of colours on him were bright orange eyes that were filled with countless expressions. As he strolled across the living room speaking and motioning Talon couldn't help but voice that he really would make a pretty girl. She'd heard from Umbra that he'd long ago taken to wearing bras and dresses, this of course confused most of her charges but they were all too polite to say anything. Talon personally was amused but hoped none of her own children suffered a gender identity issue since they were often traumatising.

Shifting her eys from the performance to her charges Talon suppresed a laugh. Psy was staring intently at Dare and copying his hand motions, occasionaly he'd stop and look about questioningly then continue on. Talon was pleased that he showed interest in smething he likely didn't understand although he seemed to be aware of more and more things around him these days. His dark ultramarine eyes glowed softly and steadily as they scanned Dare's lithe form. There was a spark of something inside them but Talon couldn't determine exactly what it might be. Satisfied that all of her children were content she silently left the room to get a drink.

***
That night Psy lay on his bed with a peice of paper, a pencil and a stencil. Very carefully he stenciled onto the paper.

Dear Journal :

Today I watched parts of plays. They were very nice and the actor was pretty. I want to see more plays.

Akina Tokuwa
Misadventures in the Grocery Store: Psy & Brimstone Meet

Akina Tokuwa
The bright fluorescent lights of modern grocery stores had never agreed with Akina Tokuwa. For one, she was accustomed to buying all of her food from fresh markets in the town square of her old village or wandering into the woods to gather herbs that the local healer was unable to find. And secondly, she was an elf born to be outside in nature. Something about the stark white walls and cool tile of a supermarket seemed... unnatural.

Regardless, Naraka had requested tylenol, advil, midol, robotussin, and a handful of other manufactured pain killers. Akina had fought with her on the need for them when natural and magic remedies worked far better, but her roommate would not relent. After all, Naraka was trying to become a registered nurse. If she was going to be giving other people this kind of medicine, then she needed to start putting her faith in it hands-on.

The wheels of the cart squeaked and clattered as Akina entered a world that seemed so confusing to her. The aisles were narrow and filled to capacity with row after row of identical products. It was unnverving.

Thankfully, Brimstone had tagged along to keep his guardian company, and it made the elf sick to see how deliriously excited Brim was to be in the store. He reached with grabby hands toward all batteries and cleaning products, but Akina denied all of his pleas for products here. "No," she would chide, unwilling to foster her child's love of all things manufactured and industrialized, "I won't buy you that, B. Stop begging. All of this is... bad."

The little Shattered would just pout and squirm as he was trapped in the child's seat at the handle of the cart. "We'll be done sooner if you stop distracting me." Of course, Brimstone did not want to leave this modern day facility so he took his time trying to grab things off the shelves and fling them into the cart without Akina noticing. Besides, he was having fun holding the bottle of tylenol that the elf had already picked up, shaking it back and forth as they continued to shop.

ladyumbra
It had taken precisely ten minutes for Psy to lose track of Riycan, the older boy had been chattering to some girl and the flock saw no point in sticking around. He'd paused at a display given away free sample crackers and cheese, he would have stayed there had not the man running it given him firm orders to leave some for the other customers. Licking his fingers Psy had carried on, he wasn't sure exactly what they were supposed to be buying on this trip since Riycan had the list.

"Bored churrr" He murmured entering a new isle and searching for something interesting, instantly a boy with glowing green eyes caught his attention. The flock seemed curious about him so he made his way towards the other boy wary of the adult that was with him. " Churrr?" he inquired of the stranger.

Akina Tokuwa
Akina had heard some small creature moving toward her, but its aura was nothing to be threatened by. Still, she was surprised when, while trying to pick Midol out of a wall of identical pills, there was a small churr at her feet. "Where did you come from, little guy?" she asked, stooping down to get closer to eye level with the child.

Up in the cart, Brim craned his neck down to look at the blue eyed child beneath him. Who was this now? In a matter of days, Brimstone had been exposed to so many other children when, up until then, he had only known those people who lived in his house with him. Remaining quiet, he continued to watch the boy, eyes flicking between him and Akina.

ladyumbra
Psy hissed as the adult woman got closer to him he backed up a step " Came from home Churr" he replied, wondering where else someone would come to the store from. Nibbling on a nail he examined the woman more closely, she wasn't human but she wasn't all that strange either. Deciding that for now she was trustworthy he gave her a small smile " I'm Psy churr".

Still his eyes kept straying to the green eyed boy, who was he he wondered that the flock found him worthy of attention. Of course he wasn't to question the flock simply to do as they told him too. Dividing his attention between woman and child he waited for a response.

Akina Tokuwa
The elf stiffened at Psy's hiss, but did not withdraw her presence. He was just a child, after all, and Akina's reflexes were keen enough to block anything he might try to throw at her. "My name is Akina, Psy. And this is my little boy, Brimstone."

"Not little," Brim replied flatly from the cart.

Ignoring Brim's antics, Akina pressed forward with Psy, wondering where his guardian was at and why they had let him get out of their sight. "Psy," she began, slowing down her words to make them easier to comprehend, "where is your guardian? Didn't you come here with somebody? I bet they are very worried that you have wandered away."

ladyumbra
"Came with Riycan and flock churr" Psy replied. While Rycan was probably still talking with that girl he had the flock. "Ricyan brother churr, Psy always find Riycan churrr." Of course it wasn't exactly hard to find Ricyan considering his brightly coloured wings and the fact that trouble tended to follow him everywhere.

"Brimstone churr" He murmured looking at the boy then turned to Akina " Kina churr." Disliking the harsh sound of Akina he simply left off the A. Eyes darting between the two he decided that he liked Brimstone better, not only was he smaller but his wings reminded Psy of his own although they were prettier. However much he found Brimstone more pleasing to look at he had to admit to the flock that Akina wasn't bad for an adult.

Akina Tokuwa
"Riycan?" Akina replied, glancing to look around for the nearest adult in the vicinity. Before she could inquire further on the whereabouts of Psy's brother, the elf quickly grimaced at the sound of the nickname "Kina". Yuck. Why were people always wanting to call her that?

Saying nothing on the subject, Akina turned her cart around before glancing back to Psy. "Won't you take us to Riycan, Psy? I'm sure he is looking for you." The elf tucked a piece of brown hair behind her left ear, doing the same favor from Brimstone while she waited for a response.

Brimstone, of course, just sat there in silence, looking about the store with his mouth still wide-open and slipping a box of vitamins into the cart.

ladyumbra
Psy thought about this for a moment, he didin't think Riycan was worried about or looking for him and even if anything were to happen he had the flock. Figuring it couldn't possibly hurt though he nodded " Riycan is in with the cereal churr, he likes all the different coloured boxes churr." Psy himself was drawn to a particularly interesting box with a plastic screen that let you see the cereal and prize inside. Turning he headed back in the direction he had come from.

Riycan who'd finished discussing cereal preferences with a rather nice young lady tilted his head to the side when he found his younger brother returning with a rather odd pair in tow. " Psy what have you found here? " The older boy inquired. Psy didn't tend to talk to strangers so the two must have been special. Walking over he extended his hand " Hello I'm Riycan Psy's older brother but not really becuase I came from a real bird and Psy came from a peice of glass." Riycan babbled cheerfully.

Akina Tokuwa
The ramblings of the small boney-winged child floated in and out of Brim's head without him ever paying attention. It was only when the cart jerked forward that he even realized that they were actually going to personally take Psy back to his brother. The green-eyed Shattered shot an aggravated glare at his mother, but continued to busy himself with the box of tylenol he held in his little hands.

Akina, meanwhile, was paying attention to the path that Psy took, recognizing Riycan as the boy that stood by the cereal boxes. Before she could even introduce herself, Riycan had already told her his and Psy's origins, which was something the elf chalked up to being far too trusting. She would never tell a complete stranger something as personal as how she came to exist in Gaia. "Oh," she said, stepping around the cart to shake Riycan's hand. "I'm Akina, and this is my son, Brimstone."

Her mind made a note that Psy came from a piece of glass though her lips said nothing of it. "And yes, Psy here wandered over to our cart, and we just wanted to make sure he got back safely to you."

Akina Tokuwa
Akina Tokuwa
Baby fat-ridden digits clawed at the paper box that held the tylenol inside, eventually ripping the thick paper off of it. Brimstone quietly dropped this into the cart, grinning at what he had accomplished thus far. The Shattered had no idea what was in this little plastic bottle, but he was ready to find out. Placing a hand on the lid, he tugged and tugged until his neck bulged. Refusing to try anything new just yet, he continue to pull with all his might while his guardian was distracted by the newcomer.

"Oh, it was no trouble. We just wanted to make sure that Psy got back to you." The rustle of pills in the cart behind her was enough to tell Akina what Brim was up to, but she knew that he wouldn't be able to get through the childproof lid. After all, they still gave her roommate Naraka trouble from time to time.

Hearing a compliment directed at her, Akina smiled lightly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. It had been a long time since she had gotten any compliment at all. "Thank you, Riycan," she responded politely.

Behind her, Brim had frozen midaction at the mention of his name. In a flash, he stashed the bottle of tylenol behind himself, issuing a curt, "Not rock. Smoke. Wings with smoke. Rocks are in ground... and adult head!" A flurry of snorting giggles erupted from the Shattered's lips at his attempt at an insult which was still too old for the toddler. Akina silenced his giggles with one glare, easing her expression as she turned backed to Riycan.

"No, no. Brim isn't my blood son, just adopted. I kind of found him... more or less." Akina shrugged, dropping her gaze down to Psy as he spoke more about "the flock", whatever that meant. "Okay," she replied with a smile, not really having any retort for Psy.

ladyumbra
Riycan let his gaze flicker between Akina and Brimstone as they spoke " Never been called an adult head before, hell I'm not even the oldest of us at home. " Second oldest if the truth be told, is was Tode as the oldest then him and the youngest was Andrea, then there was Psy and Tiwaz in the middle and no one was quite sure where they fit into the age picture.

" You found him?" Riycan asked smiling " That's not unusualy from what mom says , according to her she either found us or bought us, well Tode she bought Tode and then found the rest of us or we found her depending on who you're talking about." To Riycan the story of his family was something to be shared after all weren't most people proud of thier families and besides they had no secrets.

At the flocks urging Psy climbed onto the back of the grocery cart to he could get a closer look at Brimstone without being within grabbing distance."Fly with wings churr?" He asked though doubting it was possible, " Psy can not fly with his wings Churr."

Akina Tokuwa
Keeping one hand firmly on the cart, Akina chuckled good-naturedly as Riycan spoke. "Sounds like quite a family," she retorted, making conversation. Sure, she hadn't intended to speak to the boy for so long, but the elf was never one to walk out on a friendly exchange.

Behind her, the cart twitched as Psy made his entrance to get closer to Brim. Akina turned to face the cart, picking up Brim out of the child's seat and folding it closed. Wordlessly, she placed him in the larger basket of the cart so that he could play with Psy and turned back to Riycan.

Radioactive green eyes started coldly at Psy. What was this thing that had interrupted his tylenol mission? Brim grunted once, inching to the opposite corner of the cart. He listened to Psy speak, though his expression did not reflect this.

Could he fly? Truth be told, Brimstone had never attempted to fly with his wings, but judging by their size, it probably was not possible at this age. Like him, they were still developing and were not large enough to support his body weight in flight. "Brim flies," he lied, not wanting to be in the same category as this other Shattered.

If Psy could not do it, then Brimstone just assumed that he could.

ladyumbra
Riycan nodded and shifted from foot to foot, he wasn't used to standing still for prolonged periods of time. He also wasn't used to talking to adults for long either and it made him nervous." Our family is intersting but I am sure yours is too." he said softly still uncomfortable. This was he decided all Psy's fault for wandering off and picking up strangers.

Glowing dark ultrmarine eyes locked with the glowing green ones, the other could fly this made Psy jealous and a bit sad. Of course the moment he began to feel that way the flock reasurred him that the other was no more special then he, that Brim was not chosen by the flock to be always with them. "Fly to the clouds churr?" he asked still a bit curious about the other's abilites though.

Akina Tokuwa
Akina stood awkwardly, looking around for an easy escape. Unfortunately, the aisle that they were now on was next on her list to go to. How could she smoothly say goodbye when she would be on this cereal lane for another ten minutes, keeping in mind how long it took Akina to identify the foods that Naraka described on the grocery list? Instead, she just laughed and looked around, itching at her elbow.

"Clouds?" Brimstone questioned, looking around the confines of the cart. He peered through thin metal criss-crossed bars, looking for these 'clouds' that Psy mentioned. Lights? Check. Tall storage shelves? Check. Fooooooooood? Check. Clouds? Nada. "No clouds here," he decided at last, folding his arms and giving Psy a fulsome stare.

Obviously, this poor child in front of him did not understand what a cloud was, or atleast, that was what Brim had decided for now. No clouds, no go.

ladyumbra
Deciding that it was in his best interest to move to another area Riycan smiled at Akina " Umm nice meeting you bye." That said he yanked Psy off the cart and began dragging him down the isle ignoring his brothers protests. That had been a weird awkward silence and he simply hadn't been able to deal with it " No more picking up strangers Psy" he murmed softly.

Psy fussed he was taken but decided that brimstone whether or not he could fly was boring anyway and eventualy relented and walked away on his own "Not my fault" he defended himself " The flock was interested."

Riycan just shook his head and lead Psy towards the frozen foods where they would likely spend twenty minutes trying to pick out an eggo flavor.

Akina Tokuwa
Remaining frozen as Riycan dragged Psy away, Akina and Brim both exchanged awkward glances, each seeming to raise a critical eyebrow. "What a strange family," the elf voiced at last, reaching down to set Brim back in the child seat portion of the shopping cart.

In response, Brim screwed up his face and flatly stated, "Stupid." Having made his point clear, the toddler returned to folding his arms, having dropped the tylenol bottle out of the cart moments earlier and finding nothing else to occupy himself. Akina gave him a disapproving stare for using a mean word, but continued to push the cart, eager to get the hell out of this tiled, white hellhole.

Rounding the corner, she spotted a promising aisle that seemed to contain different bottled medicines and made her way toward it. "No more playing with strange children, B," the elf mothered, not liking the wanderings of Psy too much. That was too much freedom for a toddler to have, she reasoned.

Brim, of course, just stared at her in disbelief. She was the one who had talked to the boy in the first place, not him. Settling the issue with one toddler-sized dirty look, the young Shattered quieted down for the rest of the shopping trip until they got home.
