Silver Nephil Anybody know that one saying about the Black Dog, says that if you see it three times you're supposed to die suddenly and horribly? What if you see it more than three times and you don't die? What does that mean, that the Dog likes you or something? I've never heard about seeing it three times but most legends do say that if you see it once you will die within the week or year. Having said that, my local Black Dog is reported to be seen by locals quite a lot and nothing happens to them but visitors that claim to have seen it do report misforture afterwards (not alway death but illness or the like).

Well this resembles another myth that i've heard, I'll go and go research it and let you know, well this sounds like Cerberus which technically is the guard dog to the gates of the Underworld in Greek Mythology EXCEPT for the fact that the Hell Hound or Black Dog probably only has one head. I'll get back to you... p.s. nice topic btw.

I think i'm going to re-read my files again and see what I can come up with too. While most Black Dog do only have one head there are also reports of them without heads.

You'd think people would most times stick a head on the dog anyway. Mean, people tend to stick things in when they're not there. Like if somebody has no arm someone might not notice at first because their mind fills in the arm.

It was December. I was roughly fifteen-sixteenish, on my way back from a Nutcracker recital where I watched my friend perform. We were scouring the pavement for money I had dropped (twenty bucks! gonk ) with headbeams behind us to light up the road. All of a sudden, out of the mist, movement caught my eye. I thought it was dead leaves caught on the wind, but suddenly it took shape out of the dusky darkness into a massive canine--roughly the size of a Great Dane (same long, lean legs) with the heavy head of a mastiff. No collar. My friend and I froze, as the dog, hackles raised, but eerily not making a sound, slowly began to circle us. Its eyes were pale, its jaws closed. It made two circles around us then leapt off into the shadows. My friend and I bolted back into the car and didn't get out till we each got back to our respective houses. Three months later, my aunt passed away. I don't know if the two situations are linked, but I will never, ever forget that harrowing experience that cold winter night. seriously, guys. I'm not even afraid of dogs. But I figured I'd share this here. D|;

I live in the U.S. and my fiancee is a truck driver. Among truckers, especially the old timers, it is believed that if you see a large black dog along the roadside you need to pull over and find a place to tie down for the night or your likely to crash your truck.
My fiancee is not the superstitious type so he figures it means you've gone way over your 11 hours and are so tired you are hallucinating. Which I guess makes sense except why would it always be a big black dog then?

Which I guess makes sense except why would it always be a big black dog then? Actually this links in with some of the Black Dogs around England. Some would appear and follow lone travellers at night and walk either next to them or just behind them until they came to a village or town and then they would disappear. It would later be found that there were robbers in the area the traveller came through and if he had not had the dog with him he would have been attacked.

Could a black dog sort of make themselves someone's pet? I mean, follow them around a lot, just that one person?

Having a death omen hanging around you wouldn't be very handy. If anyone claims to have one following them it would most likely be a ghost/spirit dog.

We aren't talking about mortal pet dogs, we are talking about supernatural beings that take the form of a dog.
