At last a change of subject and it had been done so by the opposing party. Raniero was grateful for such a thing, he always failed miserably at general chit chat. Changing conversations and directing them towards more appealing topics wasn't exactly within his capabilities. He simply thought too many things through, analysed everything and as a result...what he deemed to be of interest was absolutely boring to others. Either that or they simply couldn't understand a word he said. A mare he had once met before explained his conversational skills as being that of someone who 'spoke a mile to explain an inch'. This was a wholely accurate interpretation of his inability to simplify things - he even over analysed the most typical questions!
Thus, he could only offer a wry smile as the wind soquili took the initiative and turned his attentions to Raniero's reasons for being here. Oddly enough, he had to admit that Guilian made a valid point. A river, a lake or some form of water would have proved more beneficial for him. It wasn't necessary for him to bathe but it would have presented him with a reflection. Any normal female probably would have made this 'logical' decision, it was a fairly simplistic one. However as fate would have it, Raniero had his reasons for avoiding the public eye. The first was that, ironically, he was interrupted constantly...
The second of these reasons was more specific, he did need to discuss his research and further preparations with his cohorts. If he were to speak of such things in public his cover would have been completely blown! He had only adopted the appearance a week or so ago and this simply couldn't be afford. As a result he had moved into the forests and had entrusted his appearance to his cohorts. They had good eyes and good judgement - they would alter his appearance accordingly and leave the acting to him. That being said he did need to find a reasonable explanation for being here.
Think.
"I trust my companions with completely when it comes to my hair," he smiled somewhat and glanced briefly towards the creatures waiting in the trees above his head. They couldn't descend upon him just yet given that he kept moving every few seconds. "They are aware of my likes and dislikes, they ensure I look beautiful." He cleared his throat at this and flicked his gaze towards his cohorts, two of which had their eyes fixed on the rebel ringlet on his left side.
"One might say everyone needs little respite from the attention they receive while out in the open, it is easier to go where one cannot be seen."

If the art of casual conversation was beyond Raniero's typical skill set, such was certainly not the case with Guilian. Over the course of his life, he'd devoted so much time to conversation and general pleasantries that it was doubtful he could ever be at a loss for words; furthermore, he was always willing to pick up the slack for those that were not quite so adept...whether he/they knew it or not.
Glancing at the little forest creatures in question, Guilian gave them a bit of a chuckle. Such useful little things, certainly; he could see a lot of potential in having one's own personal grooming staff. It was time consuming to have to handle matters of one's own appearance, and for a Soquili such as Raniero, who lacked wings, he could imagine that it would be nigh on impossible to manage by himself.
Yet another reason he was delighted to have wings. Not just for flight, but for grooming as well! Though he wouldn't object to have a little bit of help once in a while...
But now he was getting off-tangent himself, much to his own amusement. Looking back at Raniera, he gave her a nod of understanding; it could be a bit tiresome to always be the center of attention, as even the most exhuberant of spirits and highest of energies needed respite from time to time. She wasn't nearly as brightly colored and eye-catching as he himself was, but pastels could be just as dramatic in their own way...and she WAS a beauty in her own right. Yes, he could understand.
That helped him understand the animosity a bit, though; she'd wanted to be alone, and then he'd shown up. Ah well, he would give her her privacy again before too much long; he could be considerate like that.
"Truer words were never spoken, Chica. I suppose that in light of that fact, it would be only proper for me to apologize for intruding on your privacy. It was not my intention to interrupt or disturb, even if it has worked out that way." That he didn't think he was doing either was evident from his smile, but he wasn't going to make the mistake of making assumptions any more, not about her!

If Guilian were to present Raniero with the theory that his wings were used to groom his hair and tail, Raniero would have argued against such a theory. Wings lacked a great deal of reach from his experience, any wind soquili wouldn't be able to give themselves any definitive look. However, in retrospect there were very few Soquili who had chosen to look quite as elegant as Raniero had. His extravagance had been left entirely up to his 'beauticians' and they had really embraced the opportunity. He suspected that a part of it was purely for their entertainment, another was through interest and the last was through the amount of 'items' he had bargained with...
Really, he was a stallion who paid well for what he wanted.
If anything ensured his success then generally speaking he would do it. He did of course have limits, being 'seduced' by another stallion was one of those. However, ideas and suggestions that would have appalled some were such things that Raniero would consider. Depending on the line of research he was working with at the time, he would adapt and adopt an appearance best suited to achieve the results he needed. So he looked like a female now - perhaps in a few weeks time he would look like a murderer.
Who knew?
Nevertheless, Raniero's ears did perk as the wind soquili did apologise for interrupting his reverie. In a manner of speaking the stallion applauded the other for his manners, but another side of him refrained from letting his guard down too much. After all, this stallion gave off the aura of being a womaniser and lulling a mare into a false sense of security was not something that Raniero was unfamiliar with.
"I suppose I will accept your apology, you have given me a reasonably sufficient level of intellectual conversation after all..." He afforded at last.

If pressed, Guilian would undoubtably have conceded that it would be exceedingly difficult (if not downright impossible) to acheive a look like Raniero's with wings alone. Then again, he had been blessed with beautiful, natural curls that only wanted a brief tousle or twist to look gorgeous. It was genetics that allowed him to pull off that look, though, and he would be the first to acknowledge that not everyone was as blessed as he.
Then again, he was a lover of variety; personally, if it were up to him he would have all Soquilis 'au naturale', at least for one day. It was always so interesting to see how someone looked first thing in the morning as opposed to during the height of the day, particularly someone who (like himself), tended to obsess over their appearance. Not that he EVER did anything as silly as obsess over himself, though...at least not all the time.
Case in point, the present conversation. Coming to a halt beside one of the other trees, Guilian acknowledged Raniero's speech with a slight bow, his mouth twitching slightly in amusement at the 'reasonably sufficient' descriptor. "Well, Raniera-Chica, I aim to please, in whatever capacity the moment offers. Still, you are too kind in your compliments." He almost managed to keep a straight face at that, but didn't bother with the extra effort needed to actually pull of the seriousness. This mare was perhaps one of the most 'no-nonsense' types he's met in a long time; somehow, he doubted she'd believe the look even if she saw it. Best to simply be honest.
"So, continuing at the risk of forever tarnishing my reputation as a reasonably sufficient conversationalist, I must one again direct the conversation to the mundane, Chica. I have not had the pleasure of seeing you or your uniquely pale blue about these woods before; are you new to our woodland realm, or am I simply grown innatentive in my old-age?"
That he was old, Guilian would be the first to admit to; after all, YOUNG stallions didn't have grandchildren! However, he also knew that time had been kind to him and that few, if any, would peg him as being even middle-aged; it was all about attitude, after all. Think young, and you'd stay young; stress about lost youth, it was gone. Good thing he wasn't the type to stress!

Raniero's 'no-nosense' nature could be attributed directly to his father. While his father did possess a sense of humour, he had been determined to produce at least one heir capable of dealing with anything life threw at him. Thus, from a young age the idea of studying others to expose their weaknesses and strengths had been enforced. It had been through sheer luck that Raniero had taken to such things like a duck to water though. Admittedly in doing so he lost his sense of humour, he could logically sense when another individual might find a remark funny but it didn't tweak at his emotions in quite the same way. Perhaps in later years or should he meet the perfect mare then he would begin to recognised that he had lost something very, very important.
For the time being though, Raniero was more than content to remain the elusive stallion. Practical and logical decisions had always brought him success, what he lacked in friends he made up for in specimens. It was a fair trade off given the amount of information he had gathered in the course of the last few months. Arguably he could draw many conclusions about various individuals and in certain situations...about particular locations of note or interest.
Nevertheless as a result of these decisions he was exceptionally blunt on occasions. While he may have adopted the appearance of a mare, this did not make him any more receptive to males. As Guilian made reference to his apparent age, Raniero was not one to sugar-coat his own words. Raniero was indeed a young stallion and as such, would be relatively 'new' to such locations - that being said he wasn't a newborn either...
"It is just 'Raniera'..." he corrected, deciding to n** that little nickname in the bud immediately. He couldn't be referred to as something that didn't even have a decent ring to it when compared to his name! Well, his feminine name, then again it wouldn't exactly match his true name either. "In regards to your question though - I would have to say that I am not new given I am grown...but perhaps something has distracted you from taking heed of recent faces."
Another mare no doubt.
"I have wandered these forests for many years now, so it would be your own lack of attentiveness to your forests that have caused such a mishap - no?"

In some ways, Guilian could be described as the very anti-thesis of Raniero. Where Raniero was detached, calculating, and almost totally unemotional, Guilian was emotionally involved, carefree, and lived for his emotions. It was rather ironic that two stallions could be so different and so similar at the same time; after all, as Raniero had already pointed out, both of them used deduction and intrinsic knowledge of the Soquili nature to acheive their ends. If they had different ends and different purposes, so be it; after all, it was largely impossible to be completely the same...or completely different.
And in terms of directness, both could be argued to have equal capabilities. Raniero had no way of knowing that two of Guilian's sons and two of his good friends were do direct they could be deemed tactless; therefore what might be considered rudeness by others was, in fact, merely another piece of amusement for the already amused Guilian. "Perhaps that is so, Raniera-Ch-" Cutting himself off in mid 'chica', Guilian flashed an apologetic smile. "Apologies, Raniera; habits so very familiar are often hard to break. But we can at least try, no?"
Chuckling, he continued on. "It is a large forest, after all, and I will be the first to admit that I have not been as attentive to the world around me as of late. My son and his companion recently welcomed their first set of children, and shortly before that my daughter and her lifemate did the same. As I'm sure you can imagine, such things have a habit of intruding on the normal routines of those connected. Still, it was a worthy sacrifice, even if it means I've been lax in meeting the neighbors. But either way."
Guilian ruffled up his mane again, looking over once again at Raniero and his 'entourage' with a laugh. "Perhaps I missed a chance to meet you earlier, but I can honestly say that this has been a most enjoyable conversation for me thus far."

It wasn't that Raniero lacked emotions, he was well aware of his emotions yet he discarded them. They were of no use to him and things such as empathy, sympathy and pity often hindered one's studies. He simply didn't have the time to mull over such ridiculous things. Perhaps in time his emotions would hit him with such force that he would be incapable of ignoring them, but until this occured they were not on his immediate list of priorities. At most this stallion was capable of accepting their existence and nothing more...
Nevertheless as Guilian made reference to his rather extensive family Raniero failed to see thei mmediate relevance to it. Yes, the winged stallion was excusing his lack of attentativeness through new additions but the details were unnecessary. By the sounds of it, Guilian had slipped into the role of delighted grandfather who revelled in the fact that he had such a large family. Raniero couldn't help but wonder if his own father would be much the same - from a practical stand point he doubted it. Paramekia hadn't been thrilled at the knowledge of receiving two male heirs to begin with. He hadn't spurned them infury but the fact they were twins had made things...awkward.
Just as well his brother had no interest in following his father's lead!
That being said, Raniero did have to compliment the stallion as he attempted to meet his request. The winged one was at least trying his best not to call him 'Chica' though it was a definite test of his character. Habits were difficult to break, Raniero could at least confirm that given it was a problem he too experienced.
"While I congratulate you on your extensive family, I cannot say I am aware of the distraction it might cause. My family is small," he pointed out, making no attempts to elaborate on the fact that it only had four members within it. It was hardly of relevance, completely pointless to some.
"However I fail to see how one with such 'charisma' as yourself would find such entertainment in the company of an individual who lacks such a quality," he continued, raising a brow inquisitively. He had always noticed that the more bubbly soquili avoided the quiet and elusive types for the most part, this was the first that had proven different. "Perhaps it is the novelty value, hm?"

It was amusing in many ways; what one regarded as normal, natural, and commonplace could to another be completely foreign. The idea that his companion didn't understand the true positives of family (more particularly an extensive family, like his) was something Guilian would never understand. Then again, some things he just didn't want to understand, which made it all the easier!
Instead, he merely gave Raniero a slightly apologetic smile. "Ah yes, there I go again with my 'Proud parent' behavior. Apologies, Chi-Raniera, it's gotten to be a bit of an unconscious thing of mine, one of many. Perhaps someday you too will know what it is like to have more family mebers than you can shake a stick at...or perhaps not. Only time will tell, but I can cheerfully say that there is something delightful in a mystery!"
That fact made him grin a bit wider, segueing as it did into Raneiro's pointed comment about 'novelty value'. To an extent, wasn't everything about novelty? Though he understood there were many that preferred routine, he personally just couldn't handle that kind of sameness. Energy one day, coyness the next, bubbliness the third...long manes, short manes, neon pelts, earth tones...show him a finely turned leg and a female form, and he'd be happy. For a little bit, at least, specific time to be determined at a future date. "In sameness, there is dullness. Without variety, every day becomes the same and every action, merely mechanical. Quiet can offset energy, just as mutual serenity can soothe the soul and mutual energy can stoke a fire. Each is good, just in their own way and at their own time."

It was unfortunate in the eyes of some that Raniero had no great interest in family. However, this was not to say he didn't appreciate those he did have - he was only from a family of four and as such, was content with such a small number. He was aware that in time he would be expected to provide an heir of his own but this had never been his immediate concern. In a manner of speaking he had another, more flighty brother to accomodate and entertain such ideas until he was ready. His main interest resided in his studies and would remain this way for a number of years - or so he had decided some time ago. What Raniero was not aware of was the depth of the rumours that had spread about him and his father's stance on such an issue'.
Oh ho, Paramekia didn't mind the 'games' that his son played but he was aware of the disinterest he had in finding romance. Thus in time a conversation involving an heir was bound to come up - it may only be a one night stand but an heir was an heir. Even Raniero would be content with such a concept when the issue arose (or so one could assume).
Nevertheless as the wind stallion apologised for his 'proud parent' behaviour, the stallion did raise a brow. Once again the Wind was struggling to come to terms with his dislike for the nickname 'Chica'. Soquili truly were creatures of habit to a certain degree, it was highly amusing to watch one attempt to accomodate the likes or dislikes of another in a hospitable fashion. "I do not have the time to waste on raising, instructing and guarding vulnerable children," he pointed out coolly in perhaps the most brutal move he had made yet.
"My parents can devote time to such things, I have other matters to attend to," he remained vague in regards to what such things were and instead, fell into silence again as the Wind spoke. In essence the Wind was simply agreeing with him in regards to his 'novelty value' remark, in a very long winded way... Raniero didn't approve of the words adopted to agree to such a remark given they lacked poetic beauty and a 'yes' would have sufficed but he flashed a smile despite it.
"And where do I fall into this novelty factor, hm?"

One of Guilian's greatest character strengths (or weaknesses, depending on the perspective of the Soquili making said judgement) was his near-total inability to take offense. As a lover of variety, a lover of mares in general, and a lover of pleasant company of all types, Guilian had been greatly aided by his acceptance of personal differences. Someone liked to talk fast? Fine, well, and good. Someone preferred to communicate entirely with gestures? That was interesting, as well as a personal challenge for him to overcome! Someone didn't like his attitude, or his appearance? They were entitled to that opinion, even if it was one he didn't personally agree with, and he could respect that without becoming offended.
Such was his reaction to Raniero's pointed comment about children, a mere smile. "To one such as yourself, Chica, perhaps it would seem a waste of time. To others, there is nothing more important and amazing than guiding one's children through life. However, you might be surprised at how self-reliant some children can be." After all, he hadn't been in constant attendence, had in fact encouraged his childrens' mothers to let them have some space and be free to be children, and look how splendidly they'd turned out! Even Izusa's three children had overcome the hardships of parental infighting and grown up to be well-adjusted adults...in their own ways, of course. Self-sufficiency and self-confidence, THOSE were important character traits to tide one through dark times!
But he was not going to force his views on another, or put himself in a situation where such might be perceived. It just wouldn't be considerate. So he left the subject at that, dismissing it with a slight gesture of his wing. "I can't say that you 'fall' into anything in specific, Raniera. As with most things, it is all about the circumstances. You were here, I was within moderately easy viewing distance, and that brings us to the now. Quite simple, no?"

Raniero was well aware that there were those who took pleasure in raising their children, his mother was one of them. Positively delighted and ever loving towards her current children, she was always more than happy to mull over the prospect of more. Even his father was not adverse to raising more children though Raniero was aware that Paramekia would sooner have daughters than sons from this point forward. It was complex, but Paramekia was well aware of the potential risks of having more than one heir - he had been less than happy to have two in the beginning.
Raniero could respect his father's stance given the circumstances, it had been through sheer luck that his younger brother simply hadn't been interested in taking on his father's role. That being said there was no telling if further sons wouldn't pose a risk and as such, his father often dreams of fillies as opposed to colts. To Raniero it was more stress than it was worth despite his awareness that it would be desirable for him to produce his own heir at some point or another - baby steps, baby steps. On the whole Raniero refrained from considering such issues in any great depth for the time being. His father would be direct in his approach when the time came for Raniero to produce an heir...there would be no subtle addressals, just simple directions and statements of fact.
When that time came the stallion would accept his role accordingly but for the time being romance and what it entailed simply didn't feature in his list of priorities. Perhaps deep down there were paternal instincts in there somewhere but given how they would hinder his studies they could remain hidden and surpressed for the time being. He did not need to be chasing after young children to keep them safe, nor did he have to trample about after mares in a jealous fit if he saw them with someone else.
...Although there was one.
Shaking his head the stallion simply dismissed the Wind's words. He was once again answering Raniero's questions in a very round about way. While the stallion understood them, they were a little tedious and almost predictable in terms of content. He had gathered the Wind was a family man, though given his flirtacious nature it was unlikely he was 'faithful' to just one mare. Strange, but this did pose another question for the scholar.
"So tell me," he began at last, opting to change the subject away from children. "Why is it that you pursue mares so feverently - the art of the chase or are you simply incapable of finding satisfaction with just one?"

Overly long answers from one, overly short answers from the other. Not that Guilian really felt that he should be surprised; no-nonsense types had, in his experience, been less inclined to prevaricate than those like himself that waxed whimsical. As it was, it provided an amusing set of contrasts...or at least, one that was amusing to Guilian. Or would be, if he was consciously thinking about it rather than viewing the entire meeting as one continuous stream of amusement.
Continuing with that trend, he grinned as he said, "Both. Among other reasons. As I see it, the physical nature of Soquili makes it impossible to truly be loyal, and to suggest commitment is merely laying the groundwork for inevitable upset and hurt feelings. I would never ask any mare to be loyal to me, for I would never be able to do it for her; all that any of us physically need is amusement, after all."
Though he would concede that there were those who were specifically after children, they had always been a-not-planned-but-not-completely-unwelcome side effect for Guilian. And he preferred it that way, in all honesty. Planning for things inevitably led to disapointment.

Now there was an odd answer, one in which he hadn't encountered very often. Guilian was the first stallion he had met who had the confidence to be so blunt about it. Raniero's respect for the stallion rose considerably at such a declaration, while he didn't agree with the statement he could approve of the honesty. In a manner of speaking the Wind had adopted a very practical view of love and relationships, he recognised what benefited him and sought it out. Admittedly, he seemed to lack the deeper connections that the majority of Soquili possessed in this land. That desire for an emotional and almost permanent connection to be shared with only one other individual.
Hmmmm, it certainly gave Raniero something to consider.
This wasn't to say that Raniero would follow the Wind's example. On the contrary he would sooner adopt a single consort and be done with it, but Guilian's response did give him further information to muse over and toy with. Where some stallions had been indirect and vague for their flighty behaviour and lack of consideration for the feelings of mares - this stallion had been. Given that Raniero had heard nothing but complaints regarding stallions as of late, it was with great interest and enthusiasm that he received this data!
"It would be advisable not to lump your own preferences in with others when the majority of soquili seek out a more 'meaningful' connection between one another," he pointed out coolly, indicating that he didn't agree with the Wind's statement. His parents had after all, had a long standing and very happy relationship that let to no hurt feeling or upset. Life was not always complex or full of drama for some. "Though I do commend you for your ability to admit that you are incapable of being loyal."
"Your recognitions of your own faults is admirable to a certain degree."

A logical rebuttal, if one that Guilian could only smile at. While he would agree that it seemed most Soquilis were searching for that 'one special someone', too often it seemed to result in depression and desperation. Mares searching for a mate got wide-eyed and crafty, coy and clingy; he'd had more than one try to trap him with foals (though only two had actually been pregnant, and only one with his), and more than one try to seduce him in lifemating (as though he could be played and tricked that easily). Beyond the tricks of the mate-minded, there was also the too-familiar 'wandering eyes' of those that HAD mated and turned out unsatisfied with their lot, and the even more depressing subsect who said 'lifemates' and meant 'until something better came along'. He was no romance novel hero, and he'd be the first to admit it, but he would never condone or participate in such emotional manipulations.
So here merely smiled, giving Raniero a slight bow in tacit acceptance of the compliment. "You are too kind, Raniera; what you would call recognition of a fault is but common sense and common courtesy to me; relationships built on deceit are inexorably doomed to failure of the worst sort. I would rather be spurned for my own behaviors than embraced due to a lie."
But that was enough about him. In fact, this whole conversation had been too much about him. Tilting his head at Raniero, he queried, "So where do you fit into the scale, Raniera? Are you looking for love and a lifemate, looking for a good time, not looking at all? Or are you, perhaps, looking for something more?" At that, he raised one brow, his dark eyes meeting Raniero's head on. He wasn't referring to love anymore with that last question, but by now he fully expected Raniera to know that.
This was certainly not a typical conversation, that was for sure!

In a manner of speaking Guilian had a point, Raniero had simply been lucky enough to dissuade the general populace from ever manipulating him. His abrasive personality and otherwise dismissive behaviour had turned more mares against him than most. He was by far the most stubborn, arrogant and horrid stallion they had ever met - concerned only with his 'research'. He had long since been aware of the unwillingness mars had to be seen as a second priority. Unfortunately for the time being this was how it was and Raniero hadn't the patience to explain why he was this way to a mare. More to the point, he considered it irrelevent - what was it his father had said a while ago?
Change for no one, satisfy only yourself?
Something along those lines, if an individual was incapable of accepting him with the quirks he possessed now then they were not worth their salt. He was so blunt that those who manipulated him were discarded and categorised, what was worse is that they were informed and thanked for their assistance in his studies! It wasn't his duty to infuriate the female populace but it was within his nature to do it. He had mastered such a skill without even trying, that being said on the rare occasion that he did spare a moment to admire something reasonably attractive he was never bothered. No doubt in time he would regret that little complication but for the time being, the ability to glance approvingly and not be pursued was a rather good thing.
Alas, the topic had changed to considerably darker subjects and Raniero's ears pivoted warily at the sudden change in tone. Amber eyes narrowed ever so slightly and the very direct statement. The question he had been posed was very particular and was unavoidable. He could feign ignorance and request an even more specific question but that would be like shooting himself in the foot. Even he understood when a little bit of tact was required to avoid further misery...even if it was only on a personal level.
"Pleasures of the flesh or fleeting," Raniero replied smoothly, offering a dismissive snort in the process. "I seek no companion, regardless of their purpose. I am content with my own thoughts and musings," he indicated. In a manner of speaking he was being as direct as he possibly could without bluntly pointing out he wasn't what he seemed. That being said, there was a part of him that desired to find out what reaction he might receive at such a revelation - it would be rather good for the purpose of his research!
