Down here in Texas, apparently merely being accused of assault is a pretty big deal since a friend of mine was in jail (or was being held?) for a couple days over a mere accident. (I'm not sure if anybody even accused him of assault, either.) This was what I was being told, anyways. (Might also depend on the potential assaulter being male and the potential assaultee being female, too.)
Filing a report with the police could have a benefit other than having the cops do something about it ; you'd have a record that you reported it. Let's say, for example, this guy got really creepy and started stalking you. Even if the cops did nothing about the assault report, having that report for the judge would probably help immensely more than telling said judge that the incident happened but you just didn't report it then.
Then again, saying all that, I, personally, probably wouldn't file the report unless I felt like I was in danger.
