"It just is that way," Tanee said, taking the touching of her hair as permission to touch the other woman's hair too. "Yours is really, really, really black..." And soft, and smooth! Did her hair feel like that? Really it was like she was Mehndi's total opposite, which was sad, because she liked Mehndi's skin and her hair and everything really. "If I don't cut my hair, will it get long like yours?" It hadn't seemed to grow at all since she'd been born, or manifested, or whatever.

"I like it. It's very nice."

Mehndi laughed again at Tanee's remark. "It is. I would change it every once in a while, but Ashet likes it this way. So it stays!"

She tried to look very mysterious as Tanee asked her question. "Yes, if you don't cut it, it will get long. But--" and here, Mehndi lowered her voice drastically. "I know a way that can make your hair longer much quicker than that. Do you really want longer hair... I don't believe we've properly introduced ourselves. I am Mehndi, the head of the Aashraya."

Apparently the dark-haired woman's attempt was successful, because Tanee got as wide-eyed as a child on Christmas morning- like she was being told some wonderful secret. She gasped in all the appropriate places, leaning in to keep Mehndi's voice quite loud enough for her to understand everything. "I'm Tanee," she said with a smile. "Only I'm not head of anything. This building is the Aashraya, right? It's really big, and..." For a moment, she fell quite and chewed on one of her fingernails. "Really awesome-looking," she decided was a good descriptor.

With a deep breath, she continued, "And Awe is not a word that you add -ful to make it, um, like wonder-ful. Because awful means bad." She nodded, firmly, as if neither of the two she was speaking to knew that. "I know this from my learning."

"Well, hello Tanee." She laughed at Tanee's description of the building. "It is. and I have a feeling you may be head of something soon... you've got something about you. Some sort of aura." She laughed again as Tanee continued. "That is good to know. You wouldn't want to offend someone by accident, would you?"

"I would!" Aquinas was ignored by Mehndi. Her focus was on the Tabula now.

"Please, come inside." Mehndi turned and walked into the dark interior of the imposing building. Candles were the only source of light save for the small slits of sunlight that filtered through the arabesque latticework adorning the walls in rows. Incense smoke wafted through the room they now found themselves in, it's source a few lit sticks growing out of an offering of an assortment of brightly coloured flowers.

Aquinas wanted to accidentally offend someone? How... shocking! She gaped at him for a minute, then trotted after Mehndi. It got very, very dark; Tanee didn't like it, and moved closer to the walls where she could see the light outside. That lasted about until the time when she spotted the flowers.

With a gasp of delight, she rushed over to the arrangement and leaned as close as she dared. Obviously she knew she couldn't touch them, since she couldn't touch anything at all in the Aashraya without getting Mehndi or Aquinas mad, but of course she could look, right? Duh. She looked at the bright colors and murmured the names of the flowers she could identify, happily distracted until she knew them all. Then she straightened and looked back at the nice lady. "What are these for," she asked in a piping voice, "They're so pretty!"

Aquinas stuck his tongue out at Tanee as she looked at him. He was not in a good mood. No one was really paying him any attention. Dutifully, he sulked into the Aashraya after Mehndi and Tanee, and yawned as though he did this sort of thing everyday. He watched Tanee become enamoured with a small group of flowers that was placed in front of a large, wooden statue, incense swirling around it. Well, he supposed he could be happy for her. After all, that was the apparent reason for the trip. Tanee's, anyway.

Mehndi, instead of answering Tanee, strode past her and the flowers and up to the statue, lifting her arm languidly and ringing a small, golden bell three times before closing her eyes and murmuring something quietly. She opened her eyes again, long lashes in motion, and turned to Tanee. "That's an offering. I offered those flowers to Ar'ose. He is the God of Fidelity, along with his brothers, Adialle and Adeloi. I offer so that they may be appeased, and bless us with good fortune today. I think we will need it."

She watched Mehndi in awe, eyes as wide as saucers. "What will we need it for?" And what was good fortune, anyway? Was it like luck? And what did picture quality have to do with gods? "Are we going to go on an adventure like that Herakles guy?" Oh yes, Tanee had read an adventure story or two. They sounded like an awful lot of work, and she wasn't sure she really wanted to go on an adventure.

Unless there were flowers. "Can I make an offering, too?" The talk of gods reminded her of something... Hasya. The path of mirth? It was so, so long ago, though... Her hand drifted up to caress the key hanging beneath her top. "Can all offerings be pretty flowers? What are we doing, anyway?"

It occurred to her that Mehndi might not want to answer all her questions. She turned pink, but didn't say anything. After all, she wasn't really sorry. It would be rude to lie to a nice lady, especially in front of Aquinas. (She belatedly remembered his face before and copied it back at him. Then she did feel bad and frowned.)

Mehndi smiled slightly at Tanee's question. "I hope we have the good fortune to be able to say that my suspicions were correct." She laughed as Tanee mentioned adventures, and mythical demi-gods and other such things. "We will go on a sort of adventure, I suppose. But not quite as physical as the one Herakles undertook. A more... mystical adventure, if you will."

As Tanee fingered the key-shaped something that Mehndi could see only the faint outlines of, she started. "Why, yes, if you would like. Offerings can be flowers, but they don't have to be. Sometimes you have to think about what the God would like, and make an offering accordingly. I believe that Ar'ose does appreciate flowers."

Tanee's face-making at Aquinas reminded her that the man was still there. "You may go now, Aquinas. Or, better yet, stay here and wait. Then you can take Tanee home when we are finished." Mehndi turned back to Tanee. "We are going to do some magic."

Suspicions? Did somebody... kill something or someone? Because she only heard that word in detective games and stuff, didn't she? Not like there was much anyone to play with, everyone else was quiet and solemn and made straight faces and was just no fun. (Perhaps when she got back she would gather up everyone and give a lecture on Color. Yes. This sounded like a plan.) Instead of asking all these questions, Tanee chirped, "Ar'ose sounds like A rose. I like him."

She blinked vaguely at the mention of magic. "We?" Tanee couldn't do magic though. Just silly things, like sometimes making something stop hurting. That was just luck though, she would bet on it! Only it'd probably be rude to say something like that to Mehndi, so she just pursed her lips and gave the lady an uncertain look.

Laughing lightly at Tanee's general tendency to reduce the world to flowers and related instances, she decided they should get started. Hopefully Tanee did have a predisposition to magic. It certainly felt that way to Mehndi, and she wasn't the head of the Aashraya for nothing. Otherwise... the day would turn out to be a disappointment.

"Yes, we. See, I'm pretty good at magic myself. And I can usually tell when someone else will be good at it too. And I think you will be good at it, once you've had some training. Let's see... we can begin with any instances in which you think you might have used magic. Were there any times that something happened and you don't know how it did? Where you made something happen without knowing what was really going on?"

"Oh," Tanee said, looking curiously at the flowers so she could answer the question without rambling. Actually she might ramble anyway, who knew? Not her! "Well..." The old lady had said Tanee didn't have magic. And that was true, she supposed, since she'd never made anything happen. But instances like Mehndi described had happened.

She fell quiet again, actually thinking about it. "Once," said Tanee, then she stopped again. "Once, there was this flower, and it was dead, or at least it was really brown, and..." For a moment, she stood there, looking uncertain and a little worried. "I'm not lying, really I'm not," she told Mehndi earnestly, clasping her hands in front of her and leaning forward onto her toes. "But I touched it and then my head hurt but the flower wasn't dead anymore. I'm really not lying. Really!"

Mehndi listened attentively as Tanee detailed the instance.

"That's perfect! Exactly what I wanted to hear."

She quickly walked over to the statue underneath which sat the offering of flowers. Bending down, Mehndi murmured a few words asking for forgiveness. But this was important, and she was sure the Gods were with her in this.

She was at once back to where Tanee stood, holding a small, white bloom in her palm. "Tanee--"

And, as if time had sped up, the flower wilted into a tiny brown, withered bud before their eyes.

"Do you think you could bring this one back to life?"

With a soft, wordless cry Tanee scooped the little withered thing into her fingers gently. "No," she said, but it didn't seem to be a denial of Mehndi's question. It sounded more like she was... sad the flower had wilted.

Yet, to one who knew what to look for, it was clear the bud wouldn't stay dead for very long. Near the small stem, the brown was lightening to a springtime green, and the petals were beginning to soften. Tanee didn't seem to notice, though she didn't shift around as much as before and even looked a little tired, as if something was draining her. Furrowing her brow, she looked up at Mehndi- and when she did, the flower stopped 'healing'- and said, "I don't think I can," in a very soft, scared sort of voice.

Mehndi let out a little squeal of delight as she saw-- and indeed, felt-- the flower begin to come back to life. She almost clapped before realizing she still held the little bud in her hands. Looking down at it for a moment, it continued to grow after the momentary lapse, this time due to Mehndi rather than Tanee, and the petals spiraled out slowly to peek out from the still only slightly open green of the stem. Looking back up at Tanee, Mehndi's eyes were sparkling.

She held out the small bloom, offering it to the young Tabula. "Here. Take it."

"Oh!" She had almost forgotten the purpose of the entire exercise in the excitement. "Tanee. I expect you to come to the Aashraya and attend some classes so that you can develop your magic. Otherwise it will wither away, like the flower. But you won't be able to get it back. Oh no..." She was getting a bit carried away. "Anyways. I will tell Aquinas to arrange for your transport. So you just have to show up. Easy, right?"

She had a headache now, but the tabula also made a happy cry when Mehndi made the flower return to life. "Thank you," Tanee said, but only because it was the right thing to say. She tucked the flower away into a niche between her fingers.

"I don't like it when things wither," said Tanee glumly, remembering the flower just a few minutes before. Something inside her was gonna wither like that? Just go all black and unhappy? No way! "Easy-peezy-lemon-cheesy," she chirped, since magic lessons sounded like fun anyway. Stupid meanie-pants Theron probably didn't get to take magic lessons!
