Unable to resist the allure of the shimmering ladder, (and, indeed, there was no reason in her mind for her to do so, had she even noticed that it was not entirely of her own will that she moved forward) Carla advanced upon that lone bookcase. She had never been inside the library before, and saw no thing strange or out of the ordinary about it, at least, if there was anything that was strange about it, she attributed it to the known eclectic tastes of their host.
Approaching the bookcase, she did not look to the books (after all, her goal was the ladder, and then the desk) but bent down slightly to see the extent of damage to the ladder, and if she would be able to reach the desk with it. Elaine she took no notice of, not more than a thought at the back of her mind reminding her that she must not do any thing particularly unfashionable: the rules of society seemed to have no hold over these companions she had now.
Elaine, on the other hand, was very intently looking to the books on the shelves. No where on the floor did she find the diary that contained so many things of secrecy; perhaps it was possible that one of the other guests had picked it up. She had seen Alexander often in this same room; and of course he would never look into the diary of a lady. She resolved to question him about it, some time.
She had spent so much of her time here, and could remember every thing about the room: she looked around, to notice all that had changed, for her memory was sharp (out of necessity) and she thought that any small detail she could remember would help them reach the topmost floor, and she could achieve what she had been planning on this entire time.
However, her attention to detail was not so sharp that she could remember which sections the books had been organised in, and though she tried to check, the closely-packed books would not shift. She had thought that perhaps the sectioned colours of the books and those of the floor-design would correspond in some way to the books themselves. She wondered also, if the flower-like sectioned doorknob had any thing to do with the coloured sections of the floor.

Gideon was saved as a bright light suddenly filled the hall. He heard high-pitched screeches of dismay as the evil creatures in the shadows were forced to hide in the remotest corner they could. Thanking Heaven for his deus ex machina, he naturally walked as briskly as he could to the light source.
When Gideon got there, however, his heart froze in the middle of a joyous cartwheel. The room that contained the light was in fact the library. But at the same time, it was not the library. The snakes on the floor made a shiver run up his spine, and the distorted bookcases only made his realization worse.
They were no longer in the castle they knew. This was a completely different world.
Feeling slightly helpless, he decided it was best to wait for Chastity to offer him some candles so that he could start making more candles to aid in exploring this strange new level of the castle.
((OMG I just went through a horrible fire alarm. T____T It took 45 minutes to evacuate everyone and check the building for fires!))

((Sorry I've taken so long, guys. I've been really busy lately, but that's not really an excuse.))
Elaine sighed deeply. Her journal was nowhere to be found. Perhaps Alexander did have it - she wouldn't put it past him, although she wasn't sure what made her feel that way. She would have to find out, once this strange night was over - and then she told herself no, she wouldn't, she wouldn't have to. It was reassuring, in a way.
One of the books on a shelf seemed to be the same size as her journal, and didn't seem to fit with the books around it. Due to the warped nature of the shelves, it seemed a little looser than the others. She attempted to yank it out, but was unable to get a proper grip on it. She glared at it angrily and crossed her arms, but decided to leave it for a while.
Instead, she walked over to Carlotta's side, wanting to take a closer look at the shimmering ladder.
((And the post wasn't even as long as my other ones. God, I suck.))

((Sorry Tango, secret message for Elaine was sent to Clocks, since she's back. And sorry about that alarm, Meta.))
As the two women leaned over the broken ladder, altogether too short to seem appropriate among the looming bookshelves even if it were whole, they realized the shimmering red marks along the siderail resembled writing. Indeed, out of very hacked and scratched indentations emerged words; words that glowed from within as if an inferno were set inside the rail. With focus, the words could be made out to say:
"Thy destiny rests in evil. Captured by our Lord, thou makest a limping feast. Thou shalt die."
A menacing sheen glazed over the words upon anyone's reading of that final word.

Elaine bent down, gazing intently at the shimmering almost-words. When she attempted to read them, she heard, in distant, taunting, high-pitched, schreeching voices;
"....Thy room!... this noose... be a hanging lady... HAHAHAHA.... secrets destroy thee soul...HAHA BURN clawsssssss...."
Any further words were drowned out by the maniacal laughter, which grew louder and louder with every passing moment. She clapped her hands over her ears, even though she knew the voices were inside her head. Stumbling backwards, she pulled Carlotta away from the ladder, ignoring the woman's protests.
As soon as she tore herself away from the ladder, the mad laughter cut off abruptly.
She mumbled an apology to Lady Carlotta and drew in a deep, shaky breath. She considered telling the others about the message, but thought better of it; instead, she scrambled to come up with an explanation for her strange behaviour.
And failed. She could say they needed to reach the twelfth floor, but she'd said that so many times already. Surely they would notice something was wrong with that excuse.
She backed away from the others, going out of sight in the library shelves. Once she knew nobody could hear her, she swore under her breath.
She had to be more careful.
((Am I just imagining the 'secrets destroy thee soul' thing being specifically directed at Elaine, or was that intentional? It may be more appropriate than you think.

Chastity who was examining the room in awe… she had never seen such an amazing library, not even in her late masters home. She just so happened to be down one of the isles of books when Elaine, with one of her uneasy looks slipped into the isle, not noticing that chastity was there. Hearing the light swear that Elaine let fall from her mouth Chastity approached the lady.
“ I’m sorry to intrude on your solitude but I can’t help but see that you have heard something once again… it is no use keeping such secrets. It seems to me that we all need to be open and cooperate with the other here, each of us have certain gifts that the others do not, and I believe that will all need to work together.” and with that the words Understand My lady seeped through from Chastity’s mind with what sounded like an echo of a beastly whine.
Having said her peace with Elaine, it was then that Chastity realized that the entire room was lit with the light from the windows… and that Shaw may be able to collect such light for use on some candles. Chastity came up to Shaw with two candles in her hand.
“Here.” Chastity said sweetly handing Shaw the candles “Maybe after we all get a really good look at this room you can turn the light into more mobile lighting."
((and for the doctor who buffs: lets all hope that we only have one shadow in this room. It remands me too much like the library episodes. ))

((Haha you might notice my posts are taking on a more historically accurate style of writing -- I have been reading Victorian literature recently))
Now, Carlotta was in perfect sync with the fashions of the season, and she was perfectly sure that glittering red writing on the side of ladders was not the most recent London craze. It was this thought, then, that led her to -- hesitantly at first, then somewhat more firmly -- call out to her companions that there seemed to be some sort of message here, and then read aloud (in a voice which had previously read nought more exciting than an adventure of a daring novel) those dreadful words carved on the side. She did not notice Elaine's discomfort beside her (for, after all, the others showed no similar symptoms, so clearly it was her who was the outlyer there) but instead looked around to, firstly, gauge the reactions of those around her, and to see whether they held any insight into this riddle.
And it was thus that she got her first proper look at her companions again. She had rather callously abandoned them before, 'twas true, so it seemed to her that they had not seen each other for a rather long time. Or perhaps it was that time seemed to be distorted within this strange castle-trapped world. Nevertheless, now returned to their company, Carla watched with some measure of internal anxiousness for Alexander's reaction in particular -- he was whom she had grown used (and in such a short while) to taking her leads from, and she hoped so that her rather daring move (or at least, it felt immensely so to her) would reflect well upon her self in his eyes.

Alexander had his arms crossed tightly over his chest, waiting silently as Carlotta read the bloody words aloud to the company. His thoughts turned, trying to make something useful out of what appeared to be rather nonsensical. He took it apart in his mind, mouthing the words just ever so slightly as he repeated it to himself.
"It's a threat," he announced. His statement was loud and clear enough to draw the attention of every one of the room's inhabitants. "Why else would those words be there? If we are truly the only ones left in the Prince's castle, and possibly his entire kingdom, then it would be safe to say that the words are indeed directed at us. Of course the question lies with the inscriber..."
Roderick had followed the party into the Library, by himself, not to mention, stumbling occasionally over bunched spots in the rug, and very nearly injuring his head on the library door in his rush for the room. But he liked the freedom he found while stumbling, although he found it beyond unforgivable that there were no offers to help him, he could see how reliance on some in this bunch might not be so keen of an idea, like the stern green lady who had slapped him earlier, or that wretched Alexander. He was not the wittiest of the bunch, but he felt real danger, somewhere beneath his pride.
Hearing from others that the large room was a library convinced him to stay put within the doorway, hanging onto the inner knob to center himself. He had never even navigated the library with his sight, and did not favor the thought of giving the scum he was trapped here with more enjoyment from his blind suffering. With a cross look upon his features, he listened to Carlotta, then Alexander, all the while watching the movements of every person among the group. "That's all very well," Roderick grumbled, overlapping Alexander's last few words, "But is there anything to be done in this room? Or are we wasting our time just standing aro-" He hit the ground with a resounding bang. His fingers reached outward to grab hold of the ground, but in his shock, could find no support, nor could he manage to make any noise but a gasp for air. He was pulled so quickly from the room and into the hall by something no one saw, and in the moment of stunned silence that followed, it was as if he had never been standing there.

Gideon had just gotten inside when he was kindly greeted by very disturbing words. As Alexander was murmuring about who created such a terrible threat, Chastity came over with some candles. He promptly took the light out of one of the numerous windows and placed it in a candle. The window's light right next to it fell to the same fate. He handed one to Chastity and held the other, giving the two candles with blue light to whoever would take them.
Suddenly, Roderick began to speak, and of course Shaw ignored him entirely. That is, until he was cut off and fell to the ground. With a gasp, Roderick was suddenly pulled out of the room, and the composer instinctively ran over to catch him. However, just as he reached the door and tried to grab Roderick's hand, Roderick's hand disappeared from view into the darkness of the hall. "RODERICK!" He called, looking at the others who were staring in disbelief at the space where their companion had been moments before. "We have to go after him!" He stated, worried that the seven had just become six.
(At least, I think we have two blue-light candles (Gideon split up the double-light into single-lights) and two white-light candles. I suppose I'll have to start referring to them with what light they're holding. And I cut it off because I don't know if Shaw will die if he enters the hall. He may get eaten by a big nasty. razz )

Library: The light has been taken from both not-stained glass windows, and the room has now succumbed to the wavering shadows cast by the flickering candle light. The two candles of white light are particularly bright, and it is not a good idea to look directly at them.
Alexander shot from his position and moved briskly past Shaw, of whom he had a brief opinion of cowardice, and glared down the hallway in the dim light. He was tempted to call out, but actually saw movement further down, closer to the turn in the hall. Roderick had regained a little of his thoughts, and had enough sense to struggle against the thing pulling him away by the legs and shouted, "HELP!!!! AHHHH!!!" Alexander's legs moved on their own accord, sprinting away into the darkness.....
Scurrying... Hissing.... Roderick scrambling for support.... "They... they're gone!"
((I'm going on a little trip over the weekend, guys, so this might be my last post till maybe Tuesday, if I can't borrow my friend's laptop while I'm there. I probably will though... but anyways, don't be afraid to plunge into situations I offer you. I will give you a pretty obvious cue that death is going to be possible when it is, so don't worry razz !))

((Ouch, a coward? REALLY? Even with all those nasty little things running around? xD Well, I'll have to fix that then.))
The musician saw disapproval in Alexander's eyes, and immediately felt shame rush through his entire body. So what if there are strange things in the shadows trying to eat your immortal soul, Alex's eyes seemed to say. So what if these evil creatures will give you nightmares for the next seven years? We're supposed to be looking for a way out of this, and you are standing on the sidelines waiting for someone else to act while you stay in your comfortable little bubble of light. But before too long, Roderick's cries for help made Alexander rush down the hall and out of sight.
Gideon was not going to stand for being called a coward, even if no words were spoken about it. Without thinking, he lunged out into the hall after Alexander, chasing the man's coat-tails towards whatever beastly creature held Roderick captive. But when he got there, the beast was nowhere to be found.
((Does that mean Roderick AND the beasty are gone, then?))

(( No, Roderick was the one who said "They're gone". He's clinging to Alexander right now.))
Shaw's light illuminated the stressed face of Roderick, who mask rested askew on his sweating skin. Alexander's sharp eyes darted in every direction, searching for the enigmatic enemy. Shaw saw the same thing from the corner of his eye; a movement at the bottom of the locked, scratched door. ( D8 )

Shaw gulped at the thought of whatever the beastly thing was trying to pick them off one by one. "We... have to make sure not to open that door, then?" He asked hesitantly, his hand shaking slightly. Even the shadows that chased him around the whole castle seemed no match for this terrible beast. He'd rather take a million of the little shadow creatures any day.

Rose shuddered at the dreadful inscription Carla read as she accepted a bluish candle from shaw. She was slightly comforted to be near Chastity again, and offered the other woman a tentitive smile. "Perhaps we ought to look in the other rooms, now?"
As the Dong sounded, Roselani gasped, leaning on the nearest bookshelf for support. "The clock..." Although there was a certain crippling quality to the tone, she forced herself to peer out the doorway, towards the huddle of gentlemen, and the direction the creature had (thankfully) disappeared.
"The clock..." She repeated, trying in vain to put her concern into words. "Might you... make it stop? Like before?" She was strangely dizzy and out of breath from fear, and made due with guesturing at the plain-handled door from which they had come. She looked at Alexander with beseeching brown eyes. "I'm afraid midnight will be here all too soon." She had caught her breath enough to verbalize a fear that seemed very real, dispite it's lack of reasonable origin.
Collecting herself at last, she made the reasonable sugguestion: "Mr. Roderick, perhaps you might take my arm as we search? It would not do for you to be injuring yourself on the furniture, or again accosted by that which you can not see to avoid." With a sudden thought for the gentleman's considerable pride, she added, "In truth, I am frightened to enter these chambers alone! I would welcome your company."
It was not a lie, not entirely. She didn't want to be alone, of course, but neither did she consider the blind, spoiled, sulky man likely to afford any sort of protection.

DONG! DONG! DONG!
Alexander stared incredulously at the young woman in white for the briefest of moments, then flew to the door concealing the stairs. Those disturbing scurrying sound permeated the hall to the west, and there were some loud "click-clank-clings" as Alexander reached the door... But too late. It was locked.
"Heeheeeheeee.... ssssssssssssssss...." Alexander looked to the west hall, his mind sharpened and dulled all at once with anxiety from the clock's toll through the castle. Apparently the distance of floors had no effect on its cries.
Roderick could hear the ringings, but they did not effect him as they did the others. He watched as the colors of his companions shivered, quaked, and panicked, Roselani's words sinking in slowly through the map and clock's distractions. "Aye, milady," was his stuttered and delayed reply. He offered his arm, asking in a rushed whisper that could not conquer the clock's bell, "What's happening?!"
((Reminder of Curses: Shaw: safe because you were in the hall when the bell began to ring. Chastity: Carlotta's curse has activated yours. You must transform (insanity for two minutes, then remain as a beast for eight more). Elaine: activated by Carla as well. (highlight this, Clocks: Basically Elaine hears the voice of the Red Death freaking out, roaring something along the lines of "YOU!! .... YOU!!" You may add to this if you wish.) Roselani: You were in the library when the clock started ringing. Carla's curse will make you EXTREMELY weak, maybe even faint, but for the situation, you'll probably just feel really faint. Carlotta: I'd get away from the people you've cursed if I were you!))
