Jayara
Would he have approached her if there was a dragon about? As far as she was concerned, he just did. Maybe he had been as great as what she heard once, but now he'd probably been behind stone walls too long as far as she knew.

The female ranger looked back in disgust.

"Stopped you or stopped the crossbow men around the corner? Whomever following seems amused by them," she randomly spit out, not bothering to match Caleb's whisper. On one hand, she might learn if there really was someone farther down the road and out of vision. On the other, she'd learn if the voice was nothing more than another mystery to mess with her.

Either way she was resigned that Caleb was probably going to call her crazy or a liar for her retort - or draw his blade and make good his threat. Good chance of that happening too, but if they were possibly in danger, it wasn't going to be her neglect that would bring them face to face with a dragon.

"The keep is not an issue so lead on," the ranger said, flicking the reigns lightly. "I still stand by my statement. We are being watched." Dulcimer, moving a few steps, was nudged into a trot, giving Caleb the chance to pick up speed and take the lead once again.

'If he's here about the so-called prophetess, is that your reason as well?' Jay grumbled in her mind to the unknown voice, more just to vent, not really expecting any answer.

Caleb let her pass before kicking his horse into motion, his hand on his sword as he watched the ranger's back.

"There are crossbowmen up ahead," he finally said, "I want your complete cooperation, you understand? These are the Borderlands and I'm sure I can find out what I need in the wilderness as well as I can in Yvette's Keep. No one will interrupt someone with her heraldry."

He licked dry lips and covertly glanced around. How did the ranger know about the crossbowmen? They were upwind, around the bend in the brush... he'd taken every precaution to ensure even someone of her talents wouldn't know about them in advance. But then again, she was a ranger. Perhaps she did have senses he did not, just as he was attuned to dragons.

"Just keep moving and there won't be any trouble," he muttered, "And if there ARE dragons, I can handle them." And he smiled and gently caressed the clasp of his cloak.

"Oho," the voice said, slightly amused, "What spirit! For your information, I do not care about the prophetess. I'm here for you... just for you. You've attracted my attention, see? I know your future and I'm afraid it's not a good one. And I like your... pluck. I've got a deal for you." The voice became like silk. "It's a much better one than the one Caleb has in mind. Just do what I tell you to and you'll survive this - no - better than survive. You'll be stronger than the dragons. You'll be able to stand against the pawns of Sain even! How about that now? Beats torture, a knife across the throat, and a shallow grave, hrrrrm?"

-From his head spinning to open his eyes from darkness to just greet darkness was not something he enjoyed. Ashley looked around at the rock and heard the rubble move and looked straight up and stayed silent as he went to reach for his sword out of old habit to only find it was not by his side.-
'Dam..' -he stated in a silent scowling tone, though it didn't matter who really was listening cause the event replied in his mind remember the seconds of that day.-
-He then thought momentarily of Ashlynn and how she was at least safe if she listen and knowing the dragon would take good care of her. Then his thoughts went to how was he going to get out of this situation after all he wasn't going to give this one up to easily.-

The Fallen dragon paused at the edge of the pit, gazing down at his prize. For a moment he regarded the man and then smiled softly, pretending to look away for a moment.

"I suppose you have a choice," he said, "though it's not really a choice at all. It's merely my indecision at this point... which may resolve at any point. So I suggest you take advantage of this and help me make up my my mind before I choose what to do with you myself."

The dragon chuckled, low, and the sound echoed through the caves.

"Now. I have two uses for you. Right now I am without a Bound. I could rip your will from you, turn you into a slave, and keep you until I grow tired and dispose of you. Or I could let you starve down there until you are too weak to resist, drag you up and see what various poisons and acids do to a human until your body cannot stand it anymore. Either way, you'll die. So it's up to you how."

The dragon settled onto his stomach, settling his head near the edge of the pit, waiting with a bored expression. There. The options had been given. It was up to the human - but honestly, Tarketh really wasn't sure he wanted the man for a Bound. He'd taken the man mostly out of pride - no one stood against him - and now he was stuck with him. He wasn't sure he wanted to see the man's mind, not even to turn it against him and destroy him. Part of him just wanted to haul the man out, pin him on the ground, and drop acid on his chest so that it ate the lungs out and let him drown in his own blood.

Tarketh yawned.

Why did everyone have to remind her that she was in the Borderlands, the ranger thought to herself with exasperation. Was it because she was female? Granted one with swords was not all that common, but still.

At least she learned that there really were men with bolts waiting around the corner even though she did not get to catch the high guard's full reaction as she would have liked.

"Of course you have my cooperation. Can't give the crossbow men a reason to earn more pay, can we?" she answered to Caleb as she nudged Dulcimer to faster speeds. "If you want whatever dragon is tailing us, by all gales, you're free to handle it -or them- all to yourself." Her voice hailed a little louder this time as the noise of the hoof beats picked up.

To the voice in her head, Jay's initial reaction was to tell it off and inform it that she didn't make deals with dragons. One word stopped her though. One word that she had given up on and did not expect to hear, one that this voice should not have known.

What do you know of Sain? she mentally asked with a growl, cutting straight to what she wanted to know.

-He listen to the familiar sound of his captive's voice, and he hit the back of his head against the pit wall. He played with the thoughts in his mind trying to fully figure out why he wasn't dispose of.-
'Choice' -he lightly said to himself with a hopeless laugh, probably more so because the dragon chuckled.-

"Bound... sounds personal if you ask me."
"But then.."
"why?"
-He was not too settling at the thought of torture. but then he knew dragon wouldn't let him walk after taking him to this pit of decisions of nothing but ending in death-

"Tell me more about being a Bound."
-He looked at the edge were he could some of the dragon to try to get a better look at him. As realization of what was said earlier was becomeing hurtfully true. As he tried to control his frustration on how careless he was.-

Caleb remained stoically silent, obviously dismissing any further conversation with the ranger. The voice, however, was obviously not done.

'Quite a bit,' it said pleasantly, 'You can consider me superior to Sain... I'm older and the power he commands is mine as well. Except while Sain used to be mortal, well, I've never tasted that end of the spectrum. Now here's an interesting tidbit - Sain knows your future as well. And yet he's left you here to be killed in one fashion or another. Isn't that... hrm, I can't quite find the word. Callous? But you already know him for what he is, don't you?'

Images flitted through Jay's head, much as Sain had so easily invaded. These were just pictures though, each one showing Jay a possible future that branched off this apparently critical moment in time for her. The last one lingered and it showed Jay alive and well, flying high above the earth with the steady beat of wings around her.

'No, I am not a dragon,' the voice said after the barrage was done, 'I am far older. So. Do you wish to live? You'll need help - specifically mine. While Sain used you for his own ends and then simply LEFT you I'm offering something better. There's a price. There always is. Interested? If not, I'll leave you.'

This access into her mind - again.

First it had been the Tainted.
Then it had been Sain.
Now it was this nameless being.

'What is it with you all and messing with my head?!?' she thought in frustration, lowering her head and letting it bob with the gate of the horse as the trail of images left her mind sore, a few of them putting even her stomach in tumbles.

'That man knows nothing,' the ranger growled in her head in regarding Sain when the headache lessened. 'If he ever once was mortal, what understanding of it he had is far gone.'

The ranger looked over at the silent lackey of the Baroness, silent herself as she analyzed what few words had been said, and maybe more importantly, those that had not been said.

'And for what end I may have been played to back then, who's to say you would be no different? Dragon or no dragon, I know you not so I must pass. I will find my own path here,' she answered, narrowing her eyes as she watched the road ahead for the appearance of the crossbowmen.

From the point that the prophetess had been mentioned, she already had known this would be a risky venture. It was still one that she was going to take, whether she really had a choice or not right now. Like everyone else, there were too many unanswered questions and this might be her only chance to solve some of them. And though the head of the Dragon Knights had sworn a favor to her back those few months ago, in truth, she still felt as if she was the one with the debt to pay...

"Some say that the Binding is our justice." Tarketh relaxed, falling into the smooth rhythm of reciting old legends. "Our way to take from you the very thing you took from us - freedom. We were lords and masters of the sky... now we crawl until we find a way to take our freedom back. Steal it as your kind stole it from us."

He stood, spurs scraping onto the stone, and leaned over the pit.

"Maybe it is justice. They took my wings before I was even born. I took them back... and continue to take what I wish."

He unclasped the spur around his front leg and held it out, dropping it at the human's feet. Tarketh looked around and flicked his tail, causing metal to sing out as he flipped a human-sized dagger off a table. This too fell to the pit.

"I cannot fully explain being Bound as I am always the master. But let me give you a taste. That spur before you is poisoned as all of my weapons are. The knife is not. Take your pick. Cut your palm with either of the two - the spur will kill you, not as fast as you'd wish, I'm sure, but death nonetheless. The knife will merely give me the blood I need for the binding ritual."

"Death or slavery. That is what being Bound is. That's what it's like to not have wings. At least you have a choice... so decide."

'Your path...' The voice mulled over this for a bit. 'Very well. I leave you to walk it. Call upon me if you change your mind. You'll know I'm near. You'll hear my song.'

There was a flash of amusement and the presence was gone. Caleb glanced up, towards the trees, his brow furrowing as if he had seen something strange. Then he dismissed it and held up his hand for the ranger to halt.

"Men," he called out, "Form up. The ranger is cooperating."

Up ahead five men, all wearing Yvette's colors, slipped out of their places where they had been waiting in ambush. They walked over, talking among themselves quietly and casting overt glances at Jay. Caleb dismounted.

"We'll be on foot until we reach the next town where the horses are," he said, "From there we ride for the Keep with no stops."

((I need to fast-forward a bit unless you have something planned. Either on the road, close to the Keep, or at the Keep itself. Up to you))

Unnerved, the ranger remained silent at the voice's departure, her attention diverted when the crossbowmen came out of hiding. With her own unconcealed looks, she scanned the men for possible rank and experience while trying to pick up a few words that they were passing amongst themselves. The whispers were too low, too far away to make out anything of note.

While biting her tongue, the ranger slid down from the saddle and took to walking with her own two feet while leading Dulcimer along. Unless magic was involved, a dead four-day run was impossible with the same horse. Even for a rider it was no easy thing when it meant sleeping in the saddle. She couldn't imagine that the head guard would go to the lengths of such tomfoolery as to not make camp for the night. He was brighter than that.

She still made plans in case.

Four days later, Jay watched as the stone walls grew and the small procession slowed down, the banners that signified who owned the keep rippling in the brisk breeze. It had been nearly a year and a half, maybe two, since she'd last come this close to this hold.

Dulcimer's familiar ambling gate comforted her some as they made there way to a gate. It might have taken riding on another horse part of the way to do it, but she got him here all the same. Granted she cheated and took most of the weighted packs of her horse and put it on the one she was 'borrowing', but it worked.

((Feel free to fast forward up to at/inside the keep itself. RJ will follow Caleb where she is directed.))

Caleb brought the group around the slope of the hill the keep resided on, on a small beaten path that appeared to be hardly used. It circled around the town towards one of the keeps smaller entrances. The keep itself was formidible, built into and upon the gentle rise. It's height gave it unparralled vantage of the surrounding area, and no doubt, of the sky as well.

There was no main body, rather, small disjointed structures connected by bridges and open courtyards. The wall surrounding the keep also spun off into small jaunts, connecting with the buildings and providing more walkways. It had obviously been designed with the intent of giving defenders as much high ground and open space possible while still keeping any ground invaders out. It was little wonder the keep had never been taken. There wasn't a force in the Borderlands that could launch a prolonged assault and any dragons would find themselves caught in a vicious crossfire if they attacked from the sky.

The southern gate was open and guarded. Caleb rode through into the courtyard beyond, a small one with an exit towards the stables and a door leading into the interior buildings. Caleb dismounted, his men did the same.

"Wait here," Caleb directed. He turned to go. While he had spoken little during the trip, it seemed that his words took on a terse, almost strained tone now. He was also avoiding looking at the ranger.

Dismounting with the rest of them, Jay waited with Dulcimer's reigns in hand. There were too many men around to do otherwise.

She looked around at the men she was left with, some she had managed to talk with a little around the campfire one or two nights of the ride. There were a few stories swapped, a few tale tales told, though none dared speak of anything related to why the ranger had been tracked down. Even now, they were silent, any camaraderie that might have been struck up on the road was either gone or feigned away. As long as the Baroness had 'plans' for the ranger, she would find no friends here.

Or it could have been their commander's tone that held them in few words. She couldn't have been the only one to catch the subtlety.

"So, how long is he going to be?" the ranger said quietly to the nearest of the guards regardless of how much they probably wanted to distance themselves from her. She wasn't a fool. This wasn't a social visit by any means or the crossbowmen wouldn't have even been involved - at least wasn't a social visit in the traditional sense. Someone, Baroness or not, wanted to speak with her but not over biscuits and drink.

-Ashley looked at the items that just fell and made a slight joke.-
"Couldn't I just climb out of here with the both items."

"Yeah probably not."

-He then looked at the spur.-
"May I ask..."
-He then looked at the dagger.-
If the situation was in reverse. That I was the one asking for my freedom, and giving you the choice to die slowly, or be a slave so I could be free, and you have been saved by a human before and then a darker hearted human killed the human that saved you and all of your family but your hatching. and you currently trust a younger human with your hatchling in hope that this younger human will be great friends with your hatchling and they can protect each other.

Apologies,
To the point what would you choose?

-He then picked up the dagger and lightly placed it in his hand looking at himself as he spoke.-

"He won't be back," one of the men said, making to take Dulcimer's reins from her, "He's the Captain. He has other things to worry about now that he's carried out Lady Yvette's orders."

From the archway Caleb vanished into came three newcomers. The men she had rode with backed away, giving respectful bows. The man at the forefront of the group was a mage. He didn't look much different from others, dressed in a fine tunic, jacket, and breeches. However, the runes on his shaved head were enough to signal what he was. The two men following him were well-armed bodyguards.

"She reeks of it," the mage said, probably more to himself than others, "Take her to my lab and bind her."

He narrowed his eyes, glancing her over in quick, jerky pieces. The two men started forwards to take the ranger away.

Tarketh laughed, a low rumble in his throat that was half-growl.

"You're quite bold. I don't think I've had anything challenge me like this... since my first or second Bond... I don't give them the liberty to anymore. Not since I fell."

"Well, what do you think little human? I bought my wings." He stretched them, overshadowing the pit to make his point. "Paid for them in blood. When I saw that slaughter wasn't going to be enough I started dabbling in poisons. Cruel deaths. And one day it was I who lay on the ground, contorted in agony and barely able to scream as my body ripped itself apart and reformed itself into this form."

"So you see, human, I'm not one to roll over and die. Not for anything. I'll lie, cheat, steal, betray, and kill to preserve myself. I tasted death and defeat once, when I fell, and I'll not taste it again. Does that satisfy your questions?"

-He looked at the spur one last time.-
"That's an interesting fact I did not know."
"And Neither did it answer my questions."

-Then he looked at the dagger as this distaste for certain types of dragons was stirring again.-

"Fine, I guess you have another slave."

-He then cut his palm like the dragon instructed earlier after all he is fortunate to be still living. Then he dropped the dagger and applied much pressure against the cut as his hand pulsed and stung from the sweat and dirt.-
