I'm going to try to get to Israel in February so reading week might be out of the question.

TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!
I haven't been in a good long while, and I'd like to see it again.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Actually, I don't know how my mother would react considering your age but...
that may be a cool idea... backpacking in Israel.

She's sceptical of EVERYONE.

Anyone else wanna come? (am being very serious, I should have the funds)

Well, maybe she'll be happy you're just taking a guy friend along.

I dunno your mom that well.

But backpacking through Israel seems like a great plan.

I can teach you how to kvetch like a mo-fugger.

I remember the last time I was in Israel, it was setup by people at the college for a 2 week run through Israel.

Now mind you some of the people on this trip, didn't know the delicate political situation of Israel, they knew that their were some problems, but didn't really ask more about it.

Two characters I was saddled with were both from the urban ghetto, they were both homey-G inner city people, who were taking up industrial arts or something at the school. They spoke fluent ebonics, regardless of what color their skin was or if they were male or female.

I'm sure you know the type.

Anyrate, during the trip me and these two characters and I go to one of the banks to cash out travelers checks. While we're waiting in line two Israeli soldiers walk in, full camo and both caring assault rifles.

The two characters look at each other then slowly go on their hands and knees.

I look at them and ask what they're doing.

One of them says and I quote.

"Yo, see dem niggaz rollin up in here wit gats?! They'z about too loot dis mo fo."

I look down at them and say. "They're Israeli soldiers, they're supposed to be armed at all times while in uniform, now get up, you're insulting them and embarrassing me."

They look at each other and slowly stand up. The other one says in a loud voice... again quoting.

"Damn... homey's just be hangin all over strapped?"

At this point the Israeli soldiers walk up to us in line, smiling quietly to themselves.

One of them, who apparently listens to American Hip Hop looks to us and says.

"You just ain't representin unless you packin fo' da State of Izzy Yo"

It was possibly the most surreal moment in our young lives.

Ebonic Translations :

"Yo, see dem niggaz rollin up in here wit gats?! They'z about too loot dis mo fo."

"Hey, did you see those guys just walked in here with guns? They're going to rob the bank."

"Damn... homey's just be hangin all over strapped?"

"Wow... the locals just walk casually around all day carrying around guns?"

"You just ain't representin unless you packin fo' da State of Izzy Yo"

"You're not a team player unless your fighting for Israel"

Heh-thanks; that made sense.

By the way, what dates was everybody thinking? My preference is June 1st- early August or so. (Depends on what school I go to and when it starts)

I don't know if it helps or not or is somehow rude to suggest it, but I have no issues with lighting fires, etc on Sabbath. As a thought. But, yeah, I'm not a practicing Jew, so I'm really not held to those requirements, if help is needed. Or if I"m even invited...I hope so smile

I'd really like to go, though. I liked the Catskills idea 'cuz it is so close (within bike riding distance) of Red Hook, where a friend of mine lives. OOOR. I live in Eastern Washington and my husband's family has a 160 acre farm (by farm, I mean a mountain which happens to have a giant garden on it) -he and I have many times just grabbed our packs and walked into the woods and set up camp. Then, depending on how far one is allowed to walk on Sabbath, it would be possible to use the house bathrooms and such. I'd have to check with his family, but this far in advance, they wouldn't be likely to mind...

Well 2 things...

First you're invited to our little group events, you're a guild member, you qualify.

Second, we, collectively at a group, don't know you, your husband, the terrain, how close to civilization, or anything else about you. The only two people who I know that actually met IRL on this guild, are Dark Phoenix and Divash. Everyone else is a total stranger. That's why I think it would be a good idea to have a meet up on neutral territory. Like a public campground that is also a very popular tourist area.

That way, those who wish to camp with their families, can. Those who wish to camp alone can, and those who wish to stay at the hotels can.

My objective is to have a tabernacle in the wilderness, sun goes down, we light shabbat candles, have a big meal, a touch of red wine, or depending on the ages, grape juice. Go to sleep in our respecive areas, wake up the next day, have breakfast, meet up again and talk and get to know one another and for the adventurous types, learn about Shabbat, maybe have a bible reading and talk about the message of the bible for that week. Come sunset we have another big meal, (I can keep a fire going for 24 hours on one cord of wood) and the day after that... we just have fun. Nature Trails, Swimming, Fishing, whatever.

After that we all go home.

I've looked at one place near Niagara Falls, that has campsites that allow trailers, and campsites that have just an AC plug and wifi access, and the kind I like... primitive.

I'm sure we can figure something out to suit our collective needs.

darkphoenix1247, no, you're not the only one who's not on the coast. Except, well, Chicago is sometimes called the Third Coast because we're on Lake Michigan, and yes, the 'rumors' of a sunken U-bot in Lake Michigan were true. We pulled it up and restored it and stuck it in one of the local museums.

Of course you're invited, you're a guild member. smile But the problem is that for food to be kosher, it has to be cooked by a Jew. To be "cooked" by a Jew, a Jew has to light the fire and a Jew has to stir the pot at least once. You couldn't light the fire for us if it went out on Shabbat, nor cook our food for us.

The permitted walking (short, simplified version of the halachah/law) is that one may walk within the city limits, and a very short distance outside it; or one may walk and carry things indoors and outdoors within the confines of a fenced property if the fence is contiguous (unbroken, no door that opens during Shabbat). But I think the suggestion of neutral territory is a good one. Also, proper campgrounds will usually have a ranger or other employees who sort of monitor the comings and goings, and can get in touch with people at their campsite if someone's missing or hurt.

So in regards to the fence.

Would a rope and a dozen wooden stakes do the trick?
