I was actually told by a friend who is totally absorbed into the bible and being Christian and all that ((nothing wrong with it, though)) who had told me that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute... >.> But, none the less, became a follower of Jesus. I've never read the bible ((go ahead and throw something at me...)) so I wouldn't know personally.
I grew up in a bible home, and went to a christian middle school, and besides that fact that she was a follower of jesus, i had to google her it says pretty much she was so bad they just called her "The Sinner"
Which I find hilarious, and am pretty sure it should be her super-hero name.
Mary Magdalene is not identified in the New Testament as a prostitute at all, although she is sometimes identified as both Mary of Bethany and the unnamed "sinner" - a woman who feels she has sinned and asks for forgiveness by anointing Christ's feet with oil. [Luke 7:36-50] In 591 A.D., Pope Gregory I called her a prostitute because she was viewed as a single woman traveling with a group of men.
However, according to the Gnostic Gospel of Mary, Mary Magdalene was at best the wife and at worst, the girlfriend, of Jesus. I don't mean to sound harsh, but there are people in this world, myself included, who worship the Church of the Magdalene, and believe that Mary Magdalene is a member of the Holy Family to be revered at the same point as The Virgin Mary, so I find this dismissal and misinformation to be upsetting. Eastern Orthodox Christians also revere the Magdalene as a holy symbol.
