Helios barely turned his head, needing to keep his focus ahead lest the darkness decide to get unruly and jump him, but he managed to direct one of his eyes at Blossom. "Not sure; we haven't been walking very far. Things tend to move more slowly in dreams. I think this darkness is a strong sort, so not only would it be widely spread, but it would have a bigger center too." He blinked and showed sympathy in his half-gaze. "If you begin to feel faint or ill, you're welcome to walk as close to me as you can, but I believe it is vital that you continue to play that flute. If any songs come to you, I would encourage you to play them; if random notes keep the darkness at bay like it has been, think of what a song would do!"

Blossom thought about any songs that would come to her, and all of a sudden she remembered an old lullaby her mother used to croon to her. She walked closer to Helios, basking in his glow, before taking in a deep breath to blow out the first couple of notes. She wasn't very musical, but in this dream the tune came to her effortlessly.

"That's the way." Helios said softly as he heard the first few notes being played. He saw that the darkness seemed to be almost in pain, writhing and twisting its fragmented tentacles as though they were trying to eat each other. Apparently they weren't too fond of lullabies. He continued to lead the way, noticing suddenly that the air seemed to become much stuffier, the darkness much thicker, and the light shinign from his horn dimmer. He widened his eyes slightly and turned his head slightly left and down to peer at Blossom. "Keep playing; we're getting closer, and the darkness is getting stronger. Try to stay strong; evil has a way of pressing down on you and making you feel overwhelmed. Playing your music will help us both."

As she peered through the darkness, Blossom could make out a pulsing beat very faintly against her music. She strained to see more, but it disappeared as suddenly as she had seen it. "Don't worry, I think I know how to fend it off," she replied, filling her head with thoughts of happiness, still trying her best to drive the darkness off. Her music grew louder, and they moved further still towards the center.

Helios saw Blossom's music pierce the darkness surrounding them, and he let his eyelids half-close as he tried to feel the sing, make it flow through him like a gentle stream, washing away all of the dire thoughts and leaving behind thoughts of joy and happiness. He felt himself grow stronger, and he hoped that Blossom felt the same way. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open, and he stopped dead in his tracks. Around them, the darkness, though wary, was so thick that one couldn't even see two feet ahead. But in front of them, the way seemed clear, and beyond that gap, what Helios saw caused his skin to prickle. It seemed as though they had entered a wide cavern filled with dark purple clouds that formed a whirlpool in the air ans were sucked into the very center of the room, where a black orb nearly the size of Helios' pegasus head hung, like a dead eye. He turned and looked at Blossom. "I think we've found it."

Blossom nodded, fear showing in her eyes, although she managed to keep on playing. She was terrified of the dark energy that seemed to come off in waves around the black orb, and the evil surroundings made her heart jump with fright. Stepping forward a little more, she saw that the orb was creating the darkness. "I think...it's time to destroy it."

Helios stamped a hoof and shook his head. "Yes we should, before it gets any stronger. But there doesn't seem to be a way up there to reach it....." As Helios thought, he didn't become aware that his mane had begun to lift upward and toward the orb as though it was trying feebly to suck him toward it. It wasn't until he felt his hair stand on end, with fright not being the reason, that he snorted and shook his head again. "It's trying to suck us into that whirlpool; it isn't a strong pull now, but I can feel it getting stronger." His eyes suddenly lit up. "Hey, why don't we just give it what it wants?" He plunged ahead before Blossom could misunderstand him. "That is, you get on my back with your flute, we wait for the pull to get strong enough to carry us a bit, then I fly us into the center. It'll be like a spear through its evil heart. But you'll probably have to play the best tune you have."

Blossom bit her lip in an effort to keep back a barrage of questions about his plan. What if she couldn't play well enough? It wasn't like she was an expert at music, after all. But she nodded anyways, and she climbed onto Helios's back. "Let's go," she whispered into his ear as soon as she had setlled down comfterably. "Time to end this, once and for all."

Helios saw the worry and uncertainlty in her face and eyes, and as she climbed onto his back, he turned his head and looked her in the eye. "It may seem like a farfetched idea and that too much of it relies on you, but if it's one thing I learned after all this time is that confidence makes all the difference. A magical item is nothing without someone to work it. Remember that and play your best." With that, Helios spread his wings and jumped off of the edge and up toward the eye of the whirlpool. The darkness seemed eager to embrace them at first, but as they got closer, it seemed almost uncertain and its movements became sporadic. As they drew nearer still, Helios tucked in his legs and craned his neck, making him look like a white feathery arrow. "Okay Blossom; start playing!"

Settting her features into what she thought was determined, Blossom narrowed her eyes and glared at the dark orb menacingly. It had haunted her for way too long, and now she was going to get her revenge. Hearing Helios's confidence in her made her stronger and braver, and she felt that she had all the power in her world at her hands. Lifting the flute to her lips once more, she closed her eyes, and blew. As the first magical notes floated through the air, the darkness recoiled, as if stung, and drew back a little. By now, they were very closer to the orb.

Helios felt a surge of energy course through him, and it felt as though his entire body had been lit up from the inside out, like a light bulb. He heard the sweet song and smiled, streaking through the darkness like a beam of light. As if sensing its end, the darkness seemed to plead, stretching its tentacles out in a plaintive way. Helios pointed his horn straight out and felt for an instant such an unspeakable evil, malicious feeling, that it quite took his breath away. He barely had time to wonder where it had come from when suddenly it was gone, and he found himself facing rapidly evaporating tendrils of purple cloud. He turned and saw the orb behind him, a gigantic hole in it, and it began to shudder and dissolve like so much smoke. Helios let out a happy whinny and twisted his neck to look back at Blossom.

Blossom nearly dropped her flute in excitement and hugged Helios's neck tightly. They had finally destroyed the evil that had plagued her dreams for so long. "Thank you, Helios," she murmured into his ear. His horn seemed to be glowing brightly, and Blossom's eyes were rapt with wonder.

Helios smiled gently at her, and began to dissolve beneath her. He was surprised until he felt his familiar paws take shape, and his mane shorten and turn into his own unruly white mop. His horn shrunk and then vanished, and he felt the fabric of his clothing on his thin fur, warm as though he had been wearing them the entire time. He found himself floating in a space that was now void of any dark purple clouds, but was now colored a placid pink mixed with yellow. A few strands of shimmering white hair danced across his eyes as he smiled at Blossom. He felt tingly all over, knowing that he was still glowing like a nightlight; he fancied that if he showed his teeth in a smile, it would shine out like a flashlight. "You're quite welcome. Thank YOU for the support; it couldn't have been done without you."

Blossom giggled and brushed his hair back into place. "No, you were the one that actually finished it off. Now I can sleep peacefully," she said with relish at the thought of sweet dreams. "So, do you want to move in with me?" she added a bit shyly. "I mean, I thought you'd like to have a home..." she trailed off, lost for words.

((I can't help it; I've got to say it: Awwww! whee ))
Helios smiled and shook his head. "Don't be silly; it was your nightmare, thus the real power to defeat it came from you. I just helped you reach its core. The darkness will find no more helpless prey in you." Helios blinked suddenly and found himself fidgeting, quite a remarkable feat while floating in the air. His thoughts swirled around in his head; on the one hand he liked the thought of staying with a friend, but a little voice that spoke of propriety practically flayed him for considering such a thing. To live with a girl that he just met! Yet the offer touched him; he knew that this one had no shrewd thoughts in mind with her offer, and that alone was enough to put him at ease. "I would like that very much," he said with a slight bow. "Though I must let you know that I am fond of night walking; hopefully I will not disturb you."
