Savith gritted his teeth as she shifted to his lap, and he worked to get her settled where she was comfortable, but he was not putting her weight on that ankle. He gave up and opted to just lift them gently from the log, keeping his body in the same position, but taking the weight of them off his body and onto his mind.

As he held them, he considered her words, thought about the feelings he was receiving. He wasn't sure he could ever learn the Way. It was something about wolfriders, and unique to them alone. He knew this in his soul, but here was a child, leaning on him for comfort. His mind sought anything to attempt to console her. **You need... a new tribe then,** he half asked half stated.

Dewpaw didn't know the shift in wieght, or to weightlessness at first. She too was thinking. She knew very little about the other tribes, but she knew they didn't follow the way. *Yeah, a new tribe...* she sent back. She was glad he understood somehwat what she was talking about. She felt relieved, somewhat, to talk. It was one purpose of the tribe, and she smiled, knowing she found it in Savith. *Thank you* her send was quiet, almost a whipser in her mind.

She moved her foot, planing on putting it on the log so it wouldn't fall asleep, when she realized she wasn't touching the log, but rather that it was an inch belwo her. Again she freaked, as she had before, hurridely grabbing onto Savith, her feet planting themselves firmly on the tunk.

Savith accepted the gratitude wordlessly, mind rippling out only that welcoming acceptance. It was when she moved to get back to the log, that made his breath catch slightly. He wasn't expecting her to get down so quickly. So, he turned in mid air, arms holding her steady while his body was just not physically in the right spot as she cling to him. **Steadily,** his mind ordered gently. The single word was laced with a ooops-busted sort of inflection even as it was even and calm.

**Steady? You should warn a cub when you do that.** She sent back, her tone both slightly irritated but also ligh and joking. She didn't loosen her grip on Savtih, but rather tightened it. Even when she felt herself touch the log, she held on. **It kind of freaks us forest-dweller, feet-on-the-ground types.**

**My apologies,** Savith replied gently, hovering while Dew clung to him. The muscles at his shoulders and jaw tensed and (to his mind) hidden by the darkness) he frowned and looked what he thought was away, eyes unfocusing in memory. **Let, go,** he sent, trying to maintain the gentility of it past the darker emotions the situation recalled.

Dewpaw was starled by Savith's sudden command, "Ummm... okay." She didnt' know why he ordered her to let go out of no where, when he didn't seem to have a problem a moment ago. She situated herself back on the fallen trunk, staring at her feet swinging in the air. **Are YOU okay?** she asked in a locksend, so he would know this would be private. She was thinking about teh incident at the pool and his recent command.

Savith took a moment to collect himself, masking it by gingerly righting himself and settling to the log again.

**Ankle hurt,** he tried weakly, but realized that that would clearly not satisfy. It didn't even satisfy himself, and that knowledge soured his excuse to a weak and unstable lock send. A sigh escaped him as he admitted, **Not really. But don't ask for details. You're blessed that you will, eventually, forget.**

Dewpaw glared at him for claiming it was his only his ankle, but she heard his second send before she could reply to the first. She could see his face change as he collected himself, but she didn't comment. She guessed that he didn't know she could see and wanted to keep it that way, so she quickly looked away, once more staring at her feet. "The Way" she thought, seemed different when the otehrs talked about it. Different than how she understood it. She couldn't figure who was wrong about it, if maybe she just hadn't truly learned it yet. But she remembered stories, hearing about those that died in battle.

**The Elders would tell us stories. They would talk about the old chiefs and elves who have passed. Is that forgetting?** she sent, letting her few memories of those times go with her send. **I'm a cub, so I may not know the Way completely. But I know it isn't forgetting, like it never happened. We move one. We don't dwell. We honor them with our howls and by living. And you don't have to be a Wolfrider to do that.**

Savith glanced at Dewpaw's silhouette in the darkness, narrowing his eyes slightly to try to see. A thoughtful frown graced his features before he looked up toward the stars in that break in the canopy. Those, he could see. He was silent for a time, considering, before finally he sent simply, **You have a point.**

Dewpaw continued to stare at her feet. She felt uncomfortable in the dark silence. Her mind was fighting with itself, part of it not wanting to invade Savith's privacy while the otehr part was curious about why he was sad. She was curious by nature, especially about those she came to care about. Her curiosity won out, although she claimed it to be obly becasue of her concern. *Can I ask now?* she sent timidly, refering to him saying not to ask for deatils, hoping she wouldn't anger him.

The innocence of the question, its timid curiosity, caught Savith by surprise, and a soft chuckle escaped him before he knew what hit him. Then hearing the sound, and thinking more about what made him chuckle in the first place turned it into a soft guffaw, then an out right, head-shaking laugh. He couldn't even answer the question.

Dewpaw's head turned quickly as she stared at the laughing glider. She blinked, head tilted, confused and somewhat offended, in the exaggerated way that went wiht being a cub. *Gee... I didn't think I was that funny.* she sent, letting him know clearly how she felt about him laughing.

Savith fought the laughter back as Dewpaw's send hinted at offense. **Forgive,** he replied, taking a breath. **It wasn't so much funny as it was...** Here he floundered, mind not able to put an exact word on that parental feeling of getting annoyed at a child, only to have the child ask something adorably cute that you just can't help laughing at. The sense of that word choice uncertainty carried through the wordless part of his send.

*Its always a cub thing, isn't it* she sent back, thinking of the already numerous time she was treated a certain way for being a cub. She sighed, knowing tehre was little she could do and not feeling like giving the "I'm a wolfrider" speech, which she had already told to Dancer. She accepted teh answer, but kept staring at Savith, not looking away this time. *But you ahven't answered my question.* Her send was less timid this time, but still cautious and still filled with curiosity.

Savith composes himself, leaning back on his hands a bit, but at least the frown is gone if not replaced by a full on smile. **Not always, but it certainly helps. As for your question... ** His mind fades out a moment, the smile fading. **I'm not certain the details will sit well with you, given what they are. I would spare you the hearing of them, if I could. But if you so wish to know, I....** He looks down, toward teh outline of shadow on shadow that he knows is his feet. The conversation with Dancer and Blaze still tumbling about in his mind. **I haven't always been kind to your kind. Now that there are so few left, it weighs heavily on me. I don't think that I can help everyone, help us survive this... because of all that I have done.**
