Baston had been only about a month old when ferals had attacked their clan to steal their territory. Glen and Sparrow, his riders, died in the attack along with Thrymil, who had died defending the den. He and Verita had been far too young to protect themselves so instead of continuing the fight, Storm brought the two of them away to safety.

The prince had taken care of them until he felt that they were ready to be on their own. Unfortunately, about a year after the disaster with the ferals, there was a large avalanche on the mountain they had been living on. Baston had been separated from both his clanmates but even after the avalanche, had found neither of them.

Disheartened, Baston had moved on, never staying at one place on the Island more than a few weeks at most. Wintery weather made him feel the most comfortable while warm weather made his skin itch. When he had landed on Ridgeback Mountain one particularly warm day, he had noticed an icy lake that definitely did not look natural.

When Baston had landed to check it out, he had been intercepted by a dark brown Kyn. Immediately, he had gone on the defence when the Kyn threw a ball of fire at him. It turned out that the Kyn had thought him a feral, but when he realized he was wrong, the Kyn graciously invited him into the den before taking off.
