For those of you who didn't hear about this... http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/03/anti-emo-riots.html Riot police have taken to the streets of several cities in Mexico to ... defend emo kids? A series of attacks on dyed-hair, eye-makeup-wearing emo kids began in early March when several hundred people went on an emo-beating rampage in Querétaro, a town of 1.5 million about 160 miles north of Mexico City. The next week, shaggy-haired emo teenagers were harassed again by punks and rockabillys in the capital, prompting police protection and a segment on the TV news. Most recently, a Mexican newspaper reported that metal heads and gangsters have warned Tijuana's emo kids to stay away from the town's fair next month. But the so-called emos are organizing, too. Last week, they demonstrated against the violence, pictured above, and Wednesday some met with police in Mexico City. "They're organizing to defend their right to be emo," wrote Daniel Hernandez of LA Weekly... --- It didn't end well About 300 emo kids escorted by around 100 to 150 police officers showed up at the fair grounds, and were met by about 800 anti-emo kids. Then the riot broke out and emo kids were beaten in the street until more police arrived. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJPeffMSzVA <--- vids... and no it's not in English.

The emo culture may have a very different context in Mexico from that of North American and European countries though. I don't actually know about emo culture there, but I've heard tidbits of info about punk from my anthropologist friends who specialize in Latin America. Not sure if it's okay to lump them in the same category in the context... but the main idea is that they're both kind of fringe groups. Majority of the people, especially the middle class and higher, probably view emos and punks as unemployed and uneducated good-for-nothings who live in poorer areas of the city. Much different from North America, the stereotype is that they ARE from middle class families, live comfortably, and are pursuing some form of education (because it's.... mandatory? rolleyes ) and/or working. I don't know. I'm not really making a point here, am I? I guess I'm just trying to say that the riots in Mexico aren't there for the same reason some people on Gaia bash emos for.... in a really convoluted way. burning_eyes

Well according to sources, the reason emo kids get harassed and beat down in Mexico (now Chile and Russia) is because they are regarded as "un-manily" femme and their culture promotes homosexuality. Or some such nonsense.

darkphoenix1247 Why do you feel the need to cut yourself? Causing yourself pain isn't healthy or right- unless you're a mass murderer at the age of 14, there isn't anything you could have done to give you reason to hurt yourself. Heck, as much as I hate murderers, it's stupid for them to cut themselves, too. Life can be tough sometimes, but there are also great parts of it. Look outside in the middle of a thunderstorm and marvel at the wonder of lightning and life. When it clears up, look at a rainbow and listen to all the signs of life in a much tinier ecosystem. Feel a gentle breeze on your face when the sun shines down on you. Concentrate on what gives you enjoyment rather than what depresses you. Don't do things that cause yourself pain. I've fought with depression before, so if you ever feel like hurting yourself, please come talk to me first. And please, please take care of yourself. Ive tried but my life still gets worse so i still cut because it relieves my pain

Awesome Uchiha Sasuke Ive tried but my life still gets worse so i still cut because it relieves my pain Nothing's changed always tired Growing numb to what I could be Crawling blind over fire Losing sight of what I'm fighting for.
Sick of being Sick of feeling wrong.Yes I throw song lyrics in to help set the mood of the topic and the discussion, it helps give perspective to all involved. What's so terrible in your life that you need to cut yourself for the endorphin rush?

And since I hate Pink Floyd with an undying passion, may I suggest Motorhead 's I Don't Believe a Word? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnJ7hmhjPQA Don't talk to me, I don't believe a word Don't try to make me feel alright All the love in all the world Is not enough to save my soul tonight
Don't be my friend I'm not a fool Don't talk of things that we cannot see When all the ones that sing the blues Sometimes I think of how it used to be
I have seen the Devil laugh I have seen God turn his face away I have nothing left to lose I have nothing left to say
I have seen the sky turn black I have seen the seas run dry I have nothing that is yours I have nothing that will end up mine
Don't look at me your eyes are cold and hard Don't wonder why that I turn to you All the grief in all the world Is not enough to make me comfort you
Don't tell me lies, I'm not a dog, Don't talk of love it seems to me All the people that we harm Sometimes I think of how they used me
I have seen the fires of Hell I have seen Angels with flaming swords I have nothing that is mine And I have much that could be yours
I have seen the eye of God I have heard lies that are truth I have nothing for myself I have nothing I won't give to you
Don't say that word, I know it's only fools Who do not know that fate is just All the justice in the world Is not enough to buy my faith and trust
Don't make that face I won't be pleased Don't make a sideshow of yourself All the people we released Sometimes I think you're someone else
I have been where none have been In the empty howling rooms I have everything I need I have everything you stand to lose
I have seen the diamond worlds I have seen the shape of space I have nothing but the world I have nothing to take its place
I don't believe a wordMany of us have been down the dark and lonely path. If you want to try to move beyond the pain and turmoil within life and figure out how we got through it, let us know. None of us are saying you have a problem, none of us are judging you, we just want you to know that some of us have been there before and we understand and would like to help. But we cannot help you unless you want to be helped. So what troubles you?
