Even when it comes to paranormal pursuits I think you have to have a foundation to start from. I know all of us have read a cookie cutter circle casting/calling quarters procedure and have built upon it for our own rituals/whatever.
Sometimes it's best to study a specific system of thought just to get a feel for things before going off on your own. I think it should be said that you shouldn't just follow any old kook on the Internet though.
