Florian smirked at the brown painter's - Kodiak's - admission that he was nosy. "Well, I came out to watch the sunrise," he explained, nodding to the direction of the still-glistening forest and the pink and gold sky behind. "I've seen it before, but I was so young at the time I don't remember, and, well," he grinned suddenly, "I just left home - I'm going to explore the whole island, and I thought this would be a good place to start."
He gazed out eastwards and smiled again. It had been a good place to start. "I wasn't expecting to see others here. What brings you here?" he asked, directing the question towards Nila.

"I was flying northeast to see if I could learn magic from Kitxoone at his camp. I spotted you, Florian, and landed to see what you were doing and if you were also headed to Kitxoone's Camp. That, and I had to get out of the sun's light before it blinded me," she admitted.

"Well Nila, you and I have something in common. I too plan to learn magic from Kitxoone. I'd heard that he'd taken a break from his teaching schedule though. Perhaps when he starts accepting students again, we'll be learning magic together." Kodiak looked at the yellow male. "Florian, are you interested in magic?"

Florian stared for a moment at his companions. "No, what, really?" he said, rather flustered. After a moment, his surprise turned into a broad grin, and he nodded at Kodiak. Hesitantly, he admitted, "Well, yes. I mean, I'd love to study with Kitxoone. Magic or anything really. I don't know much about it yet. But I'd..." He turned to Nila with an expression of some amazement. "I'd not dare to go and ask him. I don't think I'd be accepted; I'm too young, and too inexperienced, and... well, I want to learn more about the world first," he said firmly. "I want to be worthy of his tuition."
He felt slightly embarrassed when he was done, aware that he had rather rambled at his companions, and possibly defended his position more strongly than was absolutely necessary. But it was all heartfelt, and he grinned anxiously at them in appeasement.

Kodiak smiled back at the young dragon. "No worries, Florian. When you're ready to seek out Kitxoone for training, you'll know." He looked at Nila. She seem to be listening, but didn't appear to have any comments to add, so he looked back to the young one. "Florian, you said you were going to explore the island. Where do you plan to go next?"

Nila nodded after listening. "It is indeed your own choice, Florian, and I'm sure you'll make a worthy student when you're ready." Nila wasn't much one for talking, being a greater listener than a talker, but she rather enjoyed listening to other dragons speak.

Florian smiled at Nila, then turned back to Kodiak, shrugging and settling his wings more comfortably against his sides. It really was going to be awkward getting out of this tree later. "I don't know, really," he replied. "I was thinking of exploring around here in the forest for a while, and then I think I'll go north to the Jungle of Sleep." He grinned briefly. "You know the tales. I want to see if I can find out if there's any truth in them, but I expect I won't see anything out of the ordinary..."
The young painter shrugged again. They both were older than him, and would know more about the island. He didn't have any firm plans of where he wanted to visit; he'd sort of assumed it would become obvious as he travelled, but maybe that was the wrong idea to set out with. "Is there anywhere you think I should go?" he asked, gaze flicking between the two of them. "Anywhere you'd reccommend?"

Nila shrugged. "I've been living southwest of here, on the coast, though I've occasionally visited the Western Isles. They're spectacular in the spring and I've heard it's quite a sight to see when the volcano is going off--provided you fly fast enough or enjoy watching from a distance."

Florian's eyes widened as he gazed down at the dark-patterned female, impressed by her bravery. Or was it foolihardiness? No, bravery, he was sure of it. People did go to the Western Island, just not often, and not many. In any case, he himself half-wanted to go there. He could hard condemn her for realising that dream. But, still. He was amazed. "Really? That must have been... well, isn't it dangerous?"
The young painter's eyes brightened at the thought of danger, although he didn't realise it. He was too busy imagining Nila, who was rather pretty, in his opinion, flying across to the island of her own and making her way towards the perilous volcano.

"I'm afraid I don't have any recommendations of places to visit. I spend most of my time in the canyon, watching the comings and goings of others." Kodiak began to wonder if he spent too much time musing about the lives of humans and other painters living in the canyon. He'd thought himself rather knowledgeable, but these two painters were talking about going to explores places he'd never even thought about to going to see.

"It is dangerous and spectacular, Florian, and it's a good thing I can fly pretty fast and pretty well, or I probably would be dead." She smiled, turning to look at Kodiak. "There's nothing wrong with staying in a place you like. You probably know more about Painters than I do, don't you? After all, I've lived in near isolation for almost all of my life."

"I suppose you're right. If one painter knew everything, there'd be nothing more left for him to do." Kodiak smiled at the dark painter. "And I'm glad I've had the rare opportunity to meet you, Nila. I hope you venture out more often from your isolation to meet other painters."

He couldn't agree with that more. "Indeed. Definitely." Florian nodded, smiling down at the pretty female. Oh, she was probably much older than him, totally uninterested and all, but this was an acquaintance he felt he had to cultivate, an opportunity he couldn't pass up. "Um, Nila, you weren't thinking of visiting the island again anytime soon were you?"he asked hopefully. "I'd love to see it, but I think I might be a bit... safer, with an experienced guide."
There. That was a perfectly sensible reason to want to spend more time with her. The yellow painter felt somewhat pleased with himself. He'd always been hopeless at the whole flirting thing. A moment later he felt a little guilty about leaving out Kodiak, and he turned to him with a slightly more awkward smile. "You could come and visit it, too, if you felt like an adventure. Although," he added hurriedly, "I can see why you wouldn't want to. I'm hopeless with people generally, not nearly as good as most of my friends, so I suppose maybe I ought to stay home and watch others sometime."

Nila didn't realize precisely why Florian would ask this particular favor, so she didn't see any problem with it. "I'll probably go there next summer, or maybe late next spring. I'll definitely take you both up there, if you're still interested then." She turned to Kodiak. "I'm not a terribly social Painter, either, so it fascinates me that you know so much about other Painters." Nila hadn't met a Painter of the opposite sex before, so she didn't really know anything about the whole flirting thing.

Thank you, Nila, that sounds like a very interesting trip. The Western Island has been an interest of mine. I've read that there are huge statues at the peak of the volcano. But you have to walk to it. Flying over the tip is too dangerous.
As for being a social painter, I don't consider myself to be one as you might think. Most of my knowledge comes from books and observations.
