Ahnik scowled at the suggestion that his mane might never come in fully, he'd never heard of any such thing personally and he hoped it was not something he would have to experience. He watched her nibble at her toes, still not looking very impressed. He didn't need to know much to assume something like fleas, and while he didn't care too much about being dirty.. it was a bit much to watch someone you just met continuously pick at their fur. So, of course, when she stepped closer to him, he stepped back.
"Not really," he said, sounding as unimpressed as he looked and felt, "Good grooming?"

Ka made a little pout and, seeing him move back, bounced forwards in an attempt to close the gap between them again. It seemed she liked to irritate others – even if she didn’t realise she was doing it.
“Good grooming?” She questioned with a smile. “D’yah wanna help? Got an itch behind my ear…”
She leapt again, seeming intent on catching him. “Yah shouldn’t scowl so much. Yer’ll get an ugly face.”

Ahnik was not being intentionally rude, but the more Ka put herself in his personal space- especially when he was trying not to stand too close. He was unreasonably disgusted when she smiled and asked if he would help her, and it showed- or almost did. Until she said he'd be ugly if he didn't stop frowning. His counter-leap backwards ended with a stumble at the comment.
"Shut up," he said grumpily, then steadied himself to hold his ground instead of continually backing up. He rarely ever smiled, and he didn't even realize it.

The smile disappeared from Ka’s face.
What was wrong with this boy? She was only teasing him. Her brothers always teased one another when they had been little. They’d always rough-housed too, though often her grey brother wasn’t too appreciative of it. Either way she had loved those games and it was odd to meet a male who clearly didn’t.
Ka’ohu didn’t know how to communicate with this one anymore.
“Fine.” She made a pouty face and drew back to the carcass she had been chewing at before she’d been interrupted by the male. “Since yer too good to hang out with me, get lost.” She flopped down where the carcass lay shrivelling under the sun and took up the bone in her jaw again, grinding her teeth adamantly against it.
Her tail thrashed behind her.

"Fine!" he shot back at her grumpily, not wanting to stick around where he was unwanted and as much as he wouldn't have minded an actual scuffle, he couldn't just randomly pick fights when completely unprovoked. At least physically. Though they weren't terribly far from his home, there was no real need to chase her off- but he was sorely tempted to try it.
However, a male's ego was a fragile thing and he had developed a habit of holding in his aggression. So he just turned around, growling to himself and stomped back off where he had come from.
