Beatrix pondered how to be truthful but detailed, considering her first impulse was to say dusty and cursed. Thankfully, Akuti seemed to be distracted by putting forth her book preferences, and she reached up to touch lightly at the edge of her bandages -- it was her new habit, her old one having been adjusting her reading glasses. "Ah, a lady of the old school," she said, "the old new school, at least. -- You have an interesting mind. Orwell and Sappho, Huxley and Tolstoy."
It didn't fit the bright, sweet voice; cognitive dissonance. " -- And then Anactoria, who is not with us; and I would rather see her lovely way of walking, and the dark flash of her eyes than all the chariots of Lydians." Jack was better with reciting than she ever was. Translating lyrically, too. "Sappho cleanses the heart, I think."
She sipped her tea again, and her smile was wry when she said: "I read romance novels partly for the schadenfreude."

"Well - I mean - I know a lot of literature other then my choices in genre can be absolutely fantastic but I read to escape being myself. - Or the world. If I read about normal people, what's the point? I'm shy and insecure - so let's read about a paranoid schizophrenic who taunts prostitutes! I .. guess my schadenfreude. Seeing people worse off then myself."
Akuti shifted, and offered Beatrix a little grin. "When I was young I wove garlands." She offered up to the older woman. She was doing an awful lot of talking on this particular date and for that... there was a bit of guilt. Jaelle had gotten stuck with the stuttering-shy-dumb Akuti.
They should have talked about books.
"Schadenfreude from romance novels?" She blinked. "That's. Well. I hadn't heard that one before. Could you explain?"

"Twenty-something women and their tragic sufferings over a racing millionaire's secret vampire baby?" said Beatrix. "I can't resist."
It was always a race-car millionaire. And a secret baby. That or a cowboy. "It's something you have to read to understand," she added, "and something one generally either weeps or laughs at." Or both.
She drained her teacup, and reached over to the pot to pour herself some more. "It's no shame to read simply for escapism," she said. "I know intellectually that there's some incredible academia on mushroom-farming. Do I want to read it? No."

"Is it full of them pining away for their beloved and the soft, sweet touches and barest breath of passions?" Akuti asked, her voice monotone to purposely off-set the almost softcore meanings behind her words. Iamel liked to throw random books around the house and threw romance novels at Kian - Akuti had picked them up more then once.
Akuti was done with her drink and had no real inclination to drink more. Tea was delicious! But. The conversation was interesting and she wasn't so thirsty.
"After we're done with the tea," She hesitated but - beatrix had said to stop double-guessing herself, "Would you like to go somewhere else? You said you weren't as busy as I thought earlier so.. if you're not wanted somewhere else..."
Akuti tapered off and shrugged; it wasn't as if the blind woman could see her but it was better then the stuttering she knew she'd be doing if she spoke.

There was a note in the other woman's voice which was -- not quite a test -- a little amused, though Beatrix's expression remained austere. Feeling Akuti out, perhaps. It was at the very least a chance to make an impression. "Do you have some place in mind?"

Akutu, at one point in time about five seconds ago, had a rather brilliant idea. It was the sort of idea that was the reason she carried around a pocket sized notebook for, an idea that made her think she was actually smart at something other then quoting books. Unfortunetly, the second Beatrix asked her what she had in mind... it fled. Maybe it was the untold pressure of actually having to voice something that could be potentially laughed at or shot down by an almost-unamused woman that got to her but.. it fled.
"Ah-I - I did about... about one heartbeat ago." Oh, crap. She was SQUEAKING. A tiny little whispering SQUEAK. Her face was RED. "I - I think it involved a poetry reading of some sort or... something else not involving coffee houses and sitting here and trying not to sit here awkwardly. Sometimes.. sometimes it's easier to talk when walking or.. or something else around then just a - a gawking barista. For - for me anyway."
She hesitated.
"Though.. a poetry reading would probably not be very.. beneficial for that, would it?"

There was a pause as Beatrix looked at her, unsmiling; and then the blonde woman laughed out loud. It was an unusual sound coming from her, short and brief. "I agree wholeheartedly," she said. "Let's get out of this stuffy cafe; it's a bit of an awkward walking cliche, I find, sitting opposite each other at a tiny table. Shall we go and take the air, then? There is a poetry bar down the street -- it's half unwashed college students, a quarter washed and the rest are hippies, but it's fairly painless to spend the evening with bohemians."
She pushed her chair away, took out her purse and peeled out a tip -- feeling the coins carefully as she did. "That is," she said, "if you don't mind sharing the time with me. Have I scared you off yet?"

She laughed. Akuti kept her shoulders from going limp with relief when she laughed and she even smiled a little. Unusual, yes, but it was what she needed to hear right now. Throwing yourself on the line when you usually avoid the line like a line-phobic was a dangerous feeling.
"Is there?" Akuti sounded rather pleased at the thought of a poetry bar. She had heard of readings but not an actual BAR! "That sounds like fun. You haven't scared me too much," Was that Akuti.. teasing? It was! Shock! "I think I may be able to put up with the fear a bit longer."
She made a slight move closer but - no. Beatrix wasn't one of her siblings or her father, to latch onto when they left places. Instead, she smiled. "You're not really all that scary."
