While Sly might be a bit on the arrogant side, the little brown and orange touched female was much more humble and easily impressed. She knew her boundaries, her limits, and though she strived for excellence she also could easily appreciate those much more talented or amazing than she.
Sly, it seemed, was fast falling in to such a category. Not only could he hunt, but he didn't seem the sort of wolf that would get all broken up just because he was lost. She highly doubted the pelted, ebony male would cry over such a thing. . . . He also seemed a lot more directionally sound, and didn't seem the sort to wander and get lost. Honestly, he seemed a lot stronger than Jaile, emotionally and physically. . . .
Boy oh boy was she lucky to find him to help her!
"Well it's awfully nice to meet you, Sly!" She chirped, blue eyes sparkling beneath the moonlight. "You're my very first friend outside of my pack, you know. . . I don't know what I would've done if I hadn't met you!" And wasn't that the truth. Her little tail wagged happily as she weaved her way through the underbrush of the woods. It was an awful lot like a maze, she noted. . . . no wonder she'd gotten so turned around. Especially since everything looked the same~!
"Rabbit, huh?" She questioned, ears pricking in curiosity. "Do you . . . do you often eat rabbit? Cause that's a rarity where I come from!" She wasn't much of a red-meat eater, if only because the ocean frequently supplied the pack foods. They were more likely to eat sea-bird and fish than rabbit or deer, though it was a special treat when the pack did return home with such a kill.
Putting her nose to the ground, now and again, the little pup did her best to track something. . .anything. A lot of the scents were unfamiliar to her, but she could only hope she might help scare something up. "I'm not really good at hunting," she added softly. Giggling a bit, wanting to laugh at herself first before Sly did, she added, "But Momma says I'll get better as I grow." Little Jaile could only hope.

Sly sniffed the air again moving on as the trees around them slowly became a bit more sparse. He didn't want his new friends to be lost, how odd to have someone he wanted to help. She wasn't family, but she needed him and that made him feel proud and he was determined now to see her safely home. His green eyes flicked over to her.
"Your my first friend...ever" He gave her a slight grin before turning back to their path.
Her question made his ear flick back and he glanced at her curiously. "What else would I eat? My parents bring deer a lot, but I can catch a rabbit all on my own..if you don't eat rabbit what do you eat?" He tilted his head curious what she subsisted on.
"You'll get better...my mom says practice makes perfect, shes the perfect skinner." He added proudly.

It was nice to have a friend. Once she got home and resettled, she could tell everyone about her adventure. Now that things were beginning to look up, the little pup wasn't so scared and she could look upon the good that would come of this meeting. . .
Her very first friend ever. And . . . and possibly some rabbit to ease the ache in her stomach and a chance to show the night dweller the ocean! Sure, there was a chance her parents would scold her, and that she would get in to trouble for wandering so. . . but at least she'd be where she needed to be. At least she'd soon be home.
It didn't occur to the little pup that there was a great chance she wouldn't likely meet the ebony one again. They lived two different lives, at two separate times, and the likelihood of meeting him might be slim. Thankfully though, Jaile couldn't imagine such a thing. . . not yet at least. For now she was happy and hopeful and curious about the new pup whom was so kind.
"Ooohhh," Jaile nodded as Sly explained the menu of his home. "I'm sorry," she giggled softly, giving her head a little shake but ever careful to not allow the warm pelt to fall off her shoulders. "I guess it would make sense that's what you'd eat. . . being a forest wolf 'n' all. My pack eats a lot of sea food. . . lots of yummy fish and sea birds, and sometimes these walking rocks called crabs! The ocean gives us what we need. . . but I've had deer before once. It didn't taste anything at all like a fish." And that was most certainly the truth!
"I . . . I can sometimes get the crabs, but you gotta be tricky cause they pinch!" Jaile crinkled her nose lightly at the memory, remember the multiple times she wasn't swift enough to pounce away. "Mostly I just bring home whatever washed up in the morning. . ." She admitted with a little shrug. The various creatures stranded on shore or within the tide pools always made a tasty treat and were much easier to trap.
"Oh, I'm sure I will! I just. . . I just have to keep on practicing, you're right. You're mama's smart, just like my Mom, but you're smart too so I'd expect it." Jaile nodded, quite content with her train of logic. "A perfect skinner. . .?" What was a skinner, she wasn't entirely sure. . . . "Perfection in anything has to be hard to achieve. . . so I can only imagine how talented she is!"

"Fish huh? Crab? I don't think I like the idea of a food that bites back, it's hard enough to avoid getting kicked, still it'd be nice to try something new..." He froze and his ear perked before he smirked back at her.
"I hear a rabbit...shhh" He slunk low and started to crawl forward his body ready to spring into action as he heard the small rustle again. He could feel the frantic thumping in the earth and smirked, it seemed the creature was caught, perhaps on some vines or brambles. Carefully he edged forward until he spotted the wriggling brown bunny, with a snarl he lunged forward to grab it and pull it back wincing as thorns scraped over his muzzle and poked his nose. His head jerked as the rabbit kicked his cheek in a desperate struggle before slowly calming as it's life drained away.
Sly growled and shook the creature before dropping it and trying to put on a brave face, oh golly that had hurt! He licked at his muzzle with a slight wince before standing over the rabbit proudly and nodded to Jaile. "For you!" He nudged the dead rabbit towards her happily his tag wavering wildly.

Jaile wagged her tail happily as she discovered her new friend, though not entirely sure about sea food, might be happy to partake! Perhaps when they got to the shore she could offer him something. . . especially if he had to make the long trip back! Anything for his assistance and his help. He was a good friend, even if he ran by star light and she by the day. . . .
It was then that the sounds of something stirring caught her attention. Orange tipped ears pricked as her little nose sniffed at the air. While she wasn't entirely confident when it came to hunting (especially at night) it seemed as if Sly was much more adept. Though she waited for her dark pelted friend to return, her ears still caught the sign of a quick struggle. Sure enough, with Sly the victor, he reappeared and had fresh meat lifeless in his mouth.
Rabbit~! What a treat!
"For me. . .?" She whispered, her little eyes going wide in surprise. Giggling softly, her mouth watering the little puppy pranced happily around Sly before adding, "For us. We can share, so you can eat too." She added happily, reaching over to give his cheek a nuzzle.
But it was then that she noticed the scratches. . his dark fur and the shadows around them had almost hid the fact he was bleeding. Bleeding!?! Oh noes! Gasping slightly, Jaile's ears pinned momentarily and she swiftly forgot all about victory dinner. "You're hurt, you're bleeding~! Are you going to be okay!?" This is what she got for encouraging a hunt. . . . Her new friend hurt just to help her out.
Whimpering slightly, she nuzzled his cheek and very cautiously groomed at his cheek and muzzle, careful of the wounds. They had to be cleaned though, less they get infected, and his tongue couldn't reach everywhere.
". . .I'm sorry! I . . I didn't mean for you to get hurt."

"I'll be okay..." He put on a braver face grinning slightly pleased with her concern for him. "It was worth it, besides you'll need to eat we have a long walk..." With a smile he licked her cheek and held back a wince. His cheek did throb a bit but he would be damned if he showed any sign of pain.
His chest puffed out with pride and he nudged the rabbit closer to her. "Eat up!" He tore open the furry animal and ripped a haunch away for himself his tiny jaws cracking through frail bones.

The little pup wasn't entirely reassured. She understood how certain instances could cause a lot of pain and he was scratched up a bit. Giving him one last little nuzzle of thanks, the brown pup didn't waste much time ripping in to the rabbit. Her stomach was screeching for food and she wanted nothing more than to gorge herself on the meat. Rabbit was a treat in her pack, and this little bunny was absolutely delicious~!
It was unlady like to scarf down her food, but the little pup couldn't help herself. She hadn't eaten all day and most of the night. Though fear had caused her to forget her ravenous hunger, with the scent of blood thick in the air, she found herself unable to hold back.
Honestly, between two pups, it didn't take long to demolish the rabbit.
Quite satisfied the the meal, though her features were now stained red with blood, the little pup happily licked her muzzle and paws. Feeling much better now that she had a fully belly, her orange tipped tail wagged in good humor. "That was the best rabbit I think I've ever had," she complimented, her eyes sparkling with renewed life. "How're you . .? There's a few bites left if ya want it. . ." She added, nosing the remains over to the shadow pup. "Fish is good but . . . Dun' tell my Momma but I think I like rabbit better." She whispered to him, as if it were some great secret.

Sly watched her and smiled pleased that she was eating something he had managed to catch. He made quick work of his portion and let her have at the rest, she clearly needed it. "Of course rabbit is better!" He winked at her and shook off.
He moved a bit closer then and peered at her muzzle. "You have a little..." He licked her muzzle and darted back. "There got it...all clean...We better head out!" He exclaimed suddenly and turned his back to her his paws moving awkwardly.
"Come on, we're almost out of the forest..." He peered up and frowned slightly at the first lightening signs of dawn. Daybreak would find him away from the den, he knew his mother would start to worry, but luckily Sly wandered often enough that his mother wouldn't panic right away.

A bit bashful at her messy eating habits, the little pup gave a giggle as he licked her muzzle. She dipped her head a bit, her tail wagging faster behind her as she gave herself a little shake. Just in case. "I'm not usually so sloppy," she grinned, though the lady-in-training within her was sort of appalled. She didn't want him to think her a slob, oh no. . . . Especially since he was her very first friend! And had been so helpful and kind already!
Tail tip wagging, she darted after the young pup. She was incredibly exhausted, and knew that her parents were probably quite worried. In fact, as they continued, it amazed her that she was feeling more and more at ease. Whether that was because of her companion assisting her, or . . . . . .
Was that the scent of the sea? The air smelled salty once again, and she was certain she could hear the low crash of waves against the shore. "Oh! Oh Sly, can you hear it?" They were close to the sea, so close. . .
"We're almost there, I'm almost home!" She almost squealed, tail wagging a mile per minute. Though she knew not of the monster pride that lived near the sea, she knew that her own family couldn't be far.
As if to confirm it, a howl could be heard in the distance, north of where they were headed. Brown and orange ears pricked and Jaile hopped happily around her friend, butting him with her head, incredibly pleased. "I know that howl. . . ." She added, energy renewed at the prospect of familiarity. "That's my Dad! I bet. . I bet he's looking for me, oh, they hadn't lost or forgotten about me!"

"Of course not Jaile, your family must love you a lot...I'm glad their gonna find you safe and sound...and fed." He grinned happily at the last part, despite knowing she was going to leave he had at least fed her. He had done something for another, and his help had eased her worries. It felt good, but knowing their time was almost up he stopped and peered at her.
"Will I ever see you again do you think?" His green eyes were intent, focused on her, his body didn't twitch and his voice held none of it's usual trickery or laughter.
"I hope I do..." He murmured then and nudged her. "Be careful?"

Though she was delighted that she had found her way home, her joy was displaced as she realized that she would now part from her friend. Here he had come all this way and now it was time for her to go. It hadn't been a usual meeting or play date, but perhaps it was all the more special. He had saved her from her plight, had been a hero and what did he get out of it?
Nothing but a kick from a rabbit and scratched nose.
Her ears flattened slightly before she found some form of optimism and hope. Her gaze held on to his own and she smiled brightly up at him. "Of course we'll see each other again~! I . . . I live by the ocean and you live in the woods, at night. Even if it takes forever, I'll find you again, oh yes I will!" And that was her promise to him. "Until then, I'll always remember you as my first friend and hero, all in one!" She giggled at the title, but meant it all the same.
Reaching forward, she pressed her nose against his before giving it a little lick. "You take care of that nose of yours, and thank you so much for helping me. I would've been lost with out you!" With another howl heard upon the horizon, Jaile threw her own head back and sang out a greeting to her pack and family, letting them know she was safe and near.
"I'll be careful if you are. . . You've a longer journey back than me." Giving the black and white pup one last look, she shrugged off his pelt that had felt so nice against her back and shoulders. Picking it up, she did her best to place it back upon his back, so he didn't have to shrug it on without help. Sadly, it was time to part ways, but no matter how slight a chance, the little pup would make sure she made good on her promise.
"Be safe, until we meet again!" And with that, the little pup turned tail and ran. She had to. She was liable to stay chattering with Sly until her father eventually found her. . .and that wasn't fair to either Sly (for taking up more of his time than she already had) or her family whom she knew she had worried sick.
Though they might not see each other again for a long time, Jaile would never forget the black and white pup, her hero and friend.

Sly watched her go his nose tingling from the small lick, the pain was long gone now. His pelt was warm against his shoulder and he nuzzled the raccoon skin softly inhaling the strange but pleasant ocean scent that Jaile had carried with her. He would remember her always, even if the day and the night and the land and the sea did keep them far apart.
"Goodbye..." He murmured softly. He waited until she was far out of sight, his green eyes squinting in the hopes of one last glimpse. Slowly he turned to head home, rushing as the sun rose. His first ever friend, and she had called him a hero, it felt good.
