Phoenix was incredibly obsessive compulsive. It was ridiculous for someone xir age, but in a way, it was fitting if one known xir origin. After all, xe was from the scent of medicine, and medicine was all about being clean and fresh, and most importantly, healthy, which the little child liked to stress.

That was, unless xe was hungry. Then the child threw all thoughts of true healthiness right out of the window and ordered five sandwiches too many. When offered a menu, Phoenix refused it, shaking xir head in refusal of the item. "No, no! That's what I want. Should I list it again?" Without waiting for the poor, flustered waiter, Phoenix began to list every sandwich in the exact same order with the exact same ingredients.

Considering that xe had seemed to just throw the ideas for the sandwiches together in the first place, it was fairly impressive that xe had managed to pull off the exact same things again. Perhaps that had something to do with the obsessive-compulsive nature he had already explained, or perhaps it had something to do with how intelligent the medicinal child actually was.

Either way, it must have made the waiter feel awkward. "Miss Raina can use the menu, though!" Xe hadn't stopped Raina from taking it; xe just wouldn't take one xirself. "She can decide something she would like to order since I don't think she knew yet. Don't be so scared waiter-guy!" Okay, perhaps Phoenix had noticed the waiter seemed a little off.

Raina was about to accept the menu graciously, silently praising herself for avoiding another disaster when Phoenix, in all of xir ungodly memory capabalities, repeated the list flawlessly with what seemed like a prideful flourish that was really just her imagination.

In the silence that followed afterwards, the bracelets looped lightly around her wrist jingled in the most salient manner, and she flushed immediately, unsure of where to look.

Of course, at Phoenix's suggestion, she reached out and took the menu anyway, pretending to scan it casually. Inside, she was a ball of jumpiness and the letters and pleasant pictures on the inner leaflets were but a blur to her jumbled state.

How had such an innocent child become something so hard to deal with?

"Phoenix, are you sure you can eat that much?" she laughed pleasantly, peering down at xir small frame. "I certainly can't, and neither can my brother- not even on a really good day. Besides, I'm not even sure if they have all those ingredients you suggested."

She paused to shift the menu over a bit on the table.

"Maybe you want to take a look before ordering? I'm sure they have some sort of sandwich you want."

Phoenix briefly pondered looking at the menu, but then decided that was a bad idea. The medicinal child already knew exactly what xe wanted, and looking at the menu would be a waste of both xir and the waiter's time. "No thank you Miss Raina. I already know what I want, and I already said it. Do you want me to say it again?"

It seemed that Phoenix was about to when xe saw a stain on the table. Instead of rattling off all of what xe wanted on the five sandwiches xe was ordering again, Phoenix instead took the napkin wrapping xir silverware and began to wipe the small spot on the table until xe was certain the small spot of whatever it had been was gone completely. Well, at least it was a lapse in conversation.

Once satisfied with the condition of the table, however, Phoenix resumed talking to Raina. "But they're fairly common ingredients, aren't they? I've never been to a sandwich shop without ham or salami. Or cheese, for that matter."

But since Raina kept pushing the menu towards xir as if begging xir to just try something from it, Phoenix would briefly glance over the menu and see if there was anything more interesting than what xe had already chosen. The medicinal child scanned the menu quietly, seeing if all of the ingredients xe had wanted were somewhere on the menu, at the very least.

Raina forced another smile, and shook her head dubiously, as if to laugh at an inside joke between them. She let her eyes drift over to the waiter and nodded her head vaguely, an apologetic gleam about her soft face. She was about to adlib some other solution when Phoenix had caught sight of a stain and was now rubbing at it feverishly, a concentrated expression on xir face.

An awkward silence fell that was hardly helpful. Out of the corner of her eye, Raina saw the young almost-French waiter shifting his weight, beads of sweat pooling at his temples though it was a comfortable cool inside the restaurant. She felt sorry for him, but she was mindful of the trouble the medicine child might cause if she let him off to another table. It would cause a scene, a riot...

She shivered at the thought.

Then, almost mechanically, she peered over xir shoulder at the menu that was now- oh thank you, thank you- in the clean child's hands. From what she could see, some of the ingredients were indeed on the menu. She couldn't remember the entire list, so she waited for Phoenix's final verdict as to whether or not they did have them all.

Perhaps she'd find a way out of this after all.

Perhaps Raina would not have to panic any further. While the medicinal one was looking for the list of sandwich ingredients, xe happened upon a small soup list showing the special soup of the day. Upon seeing the special soup, xir eyes lit up like any normal child's eyes would light up in a candy store. Of course, Phoenix was no ordinary child.

After quickly scanning the menu to make sure the ingredients he requested were in fact there, Phoenix made a somewhat different order. "Actually," xe grinned at the waiter, "I'll have the first sandwich I ordered: the one on wheat with ham, salami, and cheddar. But can I have a bowl of the Italian Wedding Soup, too?"

Phoenix was starry-eyed at the thought of eating that soup again. Carwyn had made it when xe was over at Celyn's house for the day, and xe had found it absolutely delightful! Surprisingly, xir favorite part happened to be the spinach. Of course, knowing the medicinal child's nature, that may have hardly been surprising at all. In fact, it almost seemed fitting for the health and clean obsessed one.

"Thank you, Sir Waiter!" After Phoenix was certain that the waiter--relieved, no doubt--had taken down xir order, xe handed it off to Raina so she could order something of her own. "Now you can get a sandwich!" Maybe Phoenix should look at the menus more often. That menu offered something xe hadn't been expecting, after all. Who knew cafe and sandwich shops had soups of the day?

And then, just like that, the problem seemed to resolve itself. Raina blinked half-confused eyes, all the tension inside suddenly puttering out anti-climatically. All of that trouble, suddenly fixed in an instant. As if by magic, her earlier sunshine poured back into her chest and she sat up straighter, making the waiter flinch. She almost let out an audible sigh of contentment when the awkward waiter himself beat her to it, his voice surprisingly younger than his appearance suggested. Poor guy.

By the time the girl had rid herself of the after-crisis high, Phoenix had already finished ordering xir simple sandwich and- thank goodness- a bowl of soup that was actually on the menu. Sneaking a glance at xir face, Raina was relieved to find that the child did indeed look satisfied, happy. She shot xir an approving smile.

Accepting the menu happily, she flipped through the pages looking for something light. The image of the steaming Italian Wedding Soup sprang out at her immediately, adorned with a leaf of vital parsley and bathed in a delightfully warm light. It was a clever marketing scheme- just looking at it made her unbearably hungry. She would have to come back here one day and try the rest of the selection.

How long had she lived in Midori without even stepping foot inside this place? It was inconceivable!

"The Italian Wedding Soup, then, please," she heard herself say, finally caving into temptation. "And, hmmm..."

She held up a finger to the sandwich that interested her the most. Smiling politely at the young waiter, she handed the menu back and watched him scuttle off busily, looking on the verge of yelling, escape! She let her expression widen into a grin as she turned all her attention back to the child in front of her.
