Appendix Nine: Birthdays

Elven birthdays are not very large celebrations. Normally, they are limited to close family and a few friends. A few gifts are presented to the child. As the Elf grows older birthdays tend to be ignored. Birthday celebrations are normally only held for children so they feel special and so that they are able to remember their birthday.
True parties are held on the Elf's patron god's day. Giant parties are held including all the Elves belonging to the god or goddess. The morning and early afternoon is spent honoring the god and the Elves belonging the god cleanse the temple and leave offerings. In the evening, celebrations are held for the Elves of the god or goddess. These celebrations last long into the evening. Gifts are given to the Elves in larger amounts than on a the Elves' birthdays.

Appendix Ten: Magic

Many forms of magic exist in the Realm. Many magic arts were known only to the faeries and were lost from the Realm when the faeries disappeared into their cities in the sky. All magic arts require some form of command. This can be anywhere from a word to a phrase to a full incantation depending on the type of magic.
Temple Mages

Temple Mages are extremely gifted magic users. They are normally connected in some way to Magus, the god of magic and son of Kikyo and Hun, or Estro, god of astronomy and astrology. The strongest Mages are believed to be blessed by Kikyo, goddess of spiritualists. The Mages' affinity for magic is normally noticed at a young age. At that point, the child is taken to the temple of Magus, Estro, or Kikyo and placed in the service of the god or goddess. After time, they are placed in the service of a Temple Mage, and finally are made an apprentice.

Elemental Magics

The most common magic art is elemental magic. Elemental magic is simply the control of the various elements and is normally used by saying the name of the element in Kinai. This magic is normally connected to the Elf's patron god as elemental magic is not limited to Temple Mages. Elemental magic is not uncommon in any Elven kingdom. Elves linked to Aquaria, Esperanza, Fresa, Rysta, Drega, Lisk, or Shuyin are often able to preform some type of elemental magic. Elemental Mages are normally women as most elements are connected to goddesses. However, connection with the goddess or god through family patron often allows males to be Elemental Mages.
Each of the afore mentioned gods and goddesses is connected to an element:
Aquaria - Water
Esperanza - Air
Fresa - Earth
Rysta - Fire
Drega - Darkness
Lisk - Light
Shuyin - Ice
Elemental magic is generally associated with the ability to control or affect a certain element. In cases of strong elemental magic, the Elf becomes able to create their element. For example, an Elf connected to Lisk might be able to produce a light source even in the depths of a cave. A powerful Elf connected to Aquaria might be able to create a water source in the middle of the desert.

Animal Magic: Animal Speakers

Animal magic is another common magic art. Animal Speakers are the most common users of this magic art. They gain the ability to communicate with certain animals at a young age. Animal Speakers are most common in the kingdoms of Gráswel and Hunra, where the Elves live closely with their surroundings.
The details of an Animal Speaker's ability are determined by where the power comes from. Some Temple Mages teach themselves the art of Animal Speaking. Their abilities vary depending on what they choose to learn. Born Animal Speakers get their abilities from their patron god. The most common gods of natural born Animal Speakers are Anima, Aquas, Esperanza, Rhenna, Egra, and Lisk. This is a natural talent similar to learning to speak Elvish, therefore it requires no incantation.
Certain gods and goddess allow communication with specific creatures:
Aquas - aquatic life
Esperanza - birds, insects, and sky creatures
Egra - predators
Anima is the god of animals, his chosen are able to communicate with almost any mammal. Rhenna's chosen are normally granted stronger communication with horses. However, since she is the goddess of knowledge, Elves connected with her have an easier time learning to communicate with various creatures. The choses of Lisk, goddess of understanding, also find it easy to communicate with almost any creature.
Because a few elemental goddesses also grant animal magic, it is not uncommon for an Elemental Mage to also be an Animal Speaker. This double ability is most common in females, as they form a closer bond with the goddess. Males will sometimes gain the double abilities of one of the goddesses if there is a close bond between them. For example, if a boy has a close bond with Esperanza and she becomes his patron goddess, and she is also the patron goddess of his house, it would not be considered odd for the boy to become both an Air Mage and an Animal Speaker. Most Elves with multiple abilities become Temple Mages.

Animal Magic: Transformation

Elves with a strong affinity for Animal Magic can sometimes gain the ability to transform into certain animals. This ability is normally limited to powerful Temple Mages. The connections with the gods are the same as those for Animal Speakers. Most often, it is necessary to be an Animal Speaker before the ability to transform is gained. A few misguided Temple Mages attempted to transform without first learning the art of Animal Speaking and were killed by the animals they were trying to connect with because they could not be understood.
Most Transformers are unable to perform any other powerful magics. The magical toll on the user prevents any other magical use. Therefore, the chosen of Esperanza and Lisk who become Elemental Mages and Animal Speakers will never learn to transform because their body will not possess enough magic.
Furthermore, Transformation must be used sparingly or one may find become stuck in animal form.
Transformation is a hard magic art to learn, and is even harder for the chosen of Aquas. Transformation into an aquatic creature is a long, grueling process because it includes the formation of gills and changing of the respiratory system to survive under water. Holding the form becomes extremely difficult after about an hour and undoing the transformation takes longer than the Transformation itself. The respiratory system must be returned to normal very slowly as the Mage slowly returns to the surface. Many Mages are forced to hold their aquatic form until they become stuck to avoid suffocating or drowning. Much more often, the Mage dies during the transformation or is unable to hold the form until it sticks and the body rips itself apart trying to return to it natural form. Only extremely powerful Mages are able to complete the transformation.
The chosen of Esperanza also have a tough time transforming into creatures of the sky. To become a bird, wings must be formed, the bones must become hallow, and feathers must be grown. However, the Transformation does not come with as many risks as Transformation into a fish because, unless one needs to fly high into the atmosphere, the respiratory system does not need to change. The greatest danger lies in the inability to fly. If the transformation is not completed properly the Mage will be unable to fly in their bird form. Some forget this and plunge to their deaths.
Transformation into a mammal, while still difficult to learn, is inherently less risky as the changes are less drastic. The bone structure, muscle tissue, organs, and respiratory system of mammals is similar to that of Elves making transformation easier. However, changes in size are still hard to manage. For example, Transformation into a mouse would be difficult to hold because the body is used to being significantly larger.
Transformation requires a long incantation that is normally repeated several times out loud and then several more times silently throughout the Transformation.

Animal Magic: Partial Transformation

Not all Animal Mages perform complete Transformations. Because of the risks associated with Transformation, Partial Transformation is much more popular. The strain on the body is lessened and Mages who perform Partial Transformations are often able to use other minor magics. The patrons and transformations are the same as with other Animal Magics.
Some very talented Elves are able to perform these Partial Transformations without becoming Temple Mages. More drastic changes are normally only performed by Temple Mages. The more drastic the change, the more magic it takes and the harder it is on the body.
A simple example of a Partial Transformation would be a general chosen by Egra transforming her eyes into those of a hawk so as to see her army better. A more extreme partial Transformation would be a chosen of Aquas growing webbing between his fingers and toes to swim faster or a chosen of Rhenna changing the muscles in her legs to those of a horse to run faster.

Animal Magic: Lesser Races

The most powerful Mages can perform great Partial Transformations. These changes are responsible for the Lesser Races of Frasra. Lesser races include Mermen, Angels, Centaurs, Lycans, and Anthros. There are also many smaller categories that have been combined under the term Sprite. These Races consist of Mages that attempted strong Partial Transformations and became trapped in their form. The offspring of these Races are normal Elves, so the Lesser Races are very small. However, it is easier for the children to perform these Transformations. Some are even able to shift between their Race and their Elven form.
The Lesser Races are each connected to a god the same way the Animal Mages are. A chosen of Esperanza with a strong connection to the goddess and a great understanding of magic may be able to sprout wings from her shoulder blades, thus becoming an Angel. A powerful Mage connected with Aquas may be able to Transform his legs into a tail fin, thus becoming a Merman. Elves connected with Rhenna may be able to transform their lower body into that of a horse, thus becoming a Centaur. Centaurs and Mermen are the least common of the Lesser Races as it is almost impossible for them to mate and the Transformation is very hard to perform.
Those connected with Anima and Lisk may gain the characteristics of various other creatures and become an Anthro. The most common Anthros are part cat. Many powerful Elves grow cat ears and tails, transform their eyes to gain a cat's vision, and adjust their muscles to become more agile. They perform these Transformations in the hope of becoming closer with Nefertiri, goddess of cats, the Elves, and the moon. Elves connected with Egra may also become Angels. Most often, they gain the characteristics of wolves and become Lycans.
Sprites include a wide variety of transformations. The chosen of Esperanza sometimes choose to connect with insects rather than birds. These Elves are able to grow insect wings, most often those of butterflies, dragonflies, and moths. They call themselves "Fairies" after the creatures of Human children's stories. Other Sprites are connected with Aquas. They grow webbing between their fingers and toes and produce scales on parts of their body. They live in and around water and call themselves "Undines".

Foresight

Foresight is most commonly known as the ability to see the future. It takes many forms including precognition, the ability to enter a trance-like state and write or draw the future, determining the future through astrological alignment, and various forms of divination. Elves with Estro as a patron generally gain this ability.
The future is fluid. There are many possible futures and a single decision can affect the course of the future. Foresight is a delicate art as the Seer is only shown one of many futures. At any moment, the future can change so to be completely accurate, readings must be made frequently. When reading the near future (1 minute to 3 hours), the reading can be assumed to be accurate as the near future is rather solid.
More powerful Seers are able to view multiple futures. The Seer is able to focus on a certain event and see multiple futures based on the outcome of the event.
Not all Seers have control of their ability. Some Elves never learn they are Seers because they slip into trances and determine the future, but never know what it is they are seeing.
The most powerful Seers are often hired into the service of generals and nobility. Their abilities are useful in determining the best course of action in a war or political event. The Seer Estra, named for her patron, helped Naolisk avert famine in drought of 512. She saw the possible crop failure and alerted the Lord and Lady who opened trade with the other Kingdoms in time to build a food supply for the winter. When the crops failed, the Kingdom was spared starvation.

Summoning

The Elves of Gráswel, in their endless search into magic and the gods, discovered a secret magic art: summoning. A mysterious incantation was accidently discovered by a Temple Mage that brought forth a strange creature. One of the Animal Speakers was able to understand the creature's language and learned that it came from a Realm unknown to the Elves. Through this art, many Realms outside the ones accepted by Kinai were discovered.
Summoning is a restricted art as it disrupts the natural balance of things. However, summoning has opened up connections with other intelligent races and species, allowing the Elves to form alliances across the Realms.
The strongest of these alliances is that of the Elves of Gráswel with the Dragons. The Dragons have the ability to pass between Realms. When the first Dragon was mistakenly summoned, the Realms rested on the brink of war. However, negotiations began and now many Dragon Clans live in the cliffs to the north of Gráswel. The Dragons are able to pass into the Forgotten Realm when space in the Dragon Realm becomes limited. The Forgotten Realm is also a safe haven for young Dragons when the frequent wars erupt in the Dragon Realm. In return, the Dragons fight alongside the Elven army and teach the Temple Mages long forgotten magic arts.

Dragon Magic: Flight

It was long believed that Dragons flew through the use of the massive wings extending from their backs. When the Dragons began entering Gráswel, it was discovered that this is not always the case. Some breeds of Dragon are born without wings or with wings too small for flight. These Dragons are able to fly through a form of magic.
Dragons are creatures of magic, so they are able to take flight with a thought. For Elves to fly it is necessary to recite a short incantation while willing the body upwards. Once the body has lifted from the ground, there are words for forward, backward, left, right, up, and down. These words must be spoken while the body is maneuvered in the desired direction.
Flight is a mentally grueling form of magic and an Elf will normally only remain aloft for under an hour.

Dragon Magic: Portals

Dragons are able to travel freely between the Realms by opening Portals. Again, because Dragons are creatures of magic they can open Portals with a thought, though usually they accompany the spell with a roar that covers the sound of the Portal ripping open. Another thought casts the spell that seals the Portal. All Portals must be sealed immediately to maintain the balance between the Realms.
It is not known exactly how the Realms are separated or how the portals really work. A long incantation and a mixture of certain herbs and oils is required for an Elf to open a Portal. Closing is much simpler and requires only a thought and a word.
Portal Opening is a rather simple magic as it is the mixture that produces the magical energy required, but is also prohibited by the Temple to prevent Demons from entering the Realm. A few Temple Mages open portals against the laws, that is how the Realm War began. The few Portals that have been opened are also responsible for the Half-Breeds.

Appendix Eleven: Other Races

The Elves are not the only Races to inhabit Frasra. Through Summoning, Portal Opening, and the Realm War, other Races have settled in the Realm.

Dragons

Accidently summoned by Temple Mages almost a century before the Realm War, Dragons were the first intelligent beings discovered in other Realms. Creatures born of magic they are able to perform more spells and magic arts than the Elves ever knew existed.
At first, the Dragons were going to wage war with the Elves for summing them from their Realm. However, a truce was reached and the Dragons now live in the cliffs to the North of Gráswel. Dragons live in small tight family groups called Clans. Outside of these Clans, Dragons normally don't associate with other creatures. Alliances were forged between the various Clans residing in the cliffs. This was the first time Dragon Clans had coexisted peacefully. In the Dragon Realm, wars break out almost constantly between the Clans for hunting rights and nesting areas.
In Frasra, some Dragon formed close bonds with Elves. The select Elves chosen by Dragons became their Riders. The Rider-Dragon pair are able to communicate mentally over great distances. Dragons are also able to communicate over extremely large distances making Riders able to contact each other through their Dragons no matter how far apart they are.
During the Realm War another alliance formed between the Elves and Dragons. The Dragons and Riders became part of a special part of the Gráswel army known as the Dragon Corp. Some Dragons without Riders also joined in the War, taking their orders from the leader's Dragon.
After the War, the Dragon Corp remained a part of the army, but it was never used again.

Fire-Lizards

Fire-lizards are a strange form of lizard believed to be a distant relative of the Dragons. They were accidently summoned in the year 401 and have inhabited the Realm every since. The fire-lizards form Clans similar to those of the Dragons and bits of their language has been interpreted by Dragons and Animal Speakers.
Fire-lizards are larger than regular lizards and have the ability to breathe fire, thus giving them the name "fire-lizards". However, they also have a flap of skin between their front and hind legs that expands, giving them flight. They are able to glide from tree to tree and some are able to catch air currents and fly.
Fire-lizards have been observed and it appears their flight is aided by the Dragon's flight spell and their fire-breath is really just Elemental Magic. It seems fire-lizards have stronger magic ability than any other animal species. It is expected that all creatures in the fire-lizards' Realm possess Elemental Magic though travel between Realms is prohibited so no one may ever know for sure.

Dwarves

During the Realm Wars, many Portals were opened and left open. The Dwarves slipped through a Portal during the War and settled in the uninhabited mountains of Southern Frasra. They also took part in the War to drive the Demons out of the Realm.
Dwarves are short, sturdy, hard-working creatures. They specialize in mining and forge the best weapons in the Realm. The mines in their Realm had become bare and they wandered into Frasra while searching for new resources. After the War, trade agreements were established between the Dwarves and the Elves of Hunra. The Elves provided the Dwarves with food and cloth they can't get in the mountains and, in return, the Dwarves give the Elves weaponry superior to anything the Elves have ever made.

Half-Breeds

Before the War, it was believed that all Demons were cruel, blood-thirsty creatures that were purely evil. During the War, Demons arrived in Frasra that disproved this assumption. A few Demons made their way into the Realm during the War that wanted nothing to do with the War. Some of these Demons had relationships with Elves. Half-Breeds were born from these unions.
Half-Breeds often resemble their Elven parent, though some form Demonic characteristics later in life. A Half-Breed child may seem like a normal Elf until late in childhood. At that point Demonic characteristics often become visible. The child may grow fangs, claws, horns, or simply develop Demonic markings.
Half-Breeds are often shunned and sometimes killed. Elves, by nature, are creatures of good. Demons are believed to be evil by nature. A Half-Breed then has the potential to do evil. They are labeled a threat and must be dealt with. The Half-Breeds that remain Elven in appearance are often spared this treatment, as they are almost impossible to tell apart from the Elves.
All Half-Breeds, no matter their appearance, are extremely powerful magic users. While Temple Mages may struggle with Transformation, a Half-Breed child may Transform for fun. Most Half-Breeds study and become Elemental Masters, able to easily control all the elements. Half-Breeds seldom become Temple Mages, as their magical ability is almost impossible to measure by conventional means. However, this does not stop them from studying all other magical arts.
Most Half-Breeds are raised as normal Elves and are never learn of their lineage. Others are told of their mixed blood. Some live like normal Elves and live good, honest lives. Some resent the stereotypes placed upon Half-Breeds and do become evil, destroying those that shun them. The Half-Breeds born to Elven men are often born and raised in the Demon Realm. Demons don't like Half-Breeds, but their culture is one of power. As long as a Half-Breed learns to utilize their advantages, they are accepted into Demon society.
The Half-Breeds born to Elven mothers generally live in the Elven Realm, with a few rare exceptions. Some Half-Breeds will be sent with their fathers to the Demon Realm to protect them. Those that remain with their mothers are often given the family name of their mother's husband. In the case of unmarried women, the child normally receives the mother's family name. Some brave Elven women will give their child the surname of their Demon father. These children are often ostracized by society whether their Demon blood shows or not.

Lesser Races

The Lesser Races (as discussed under Animal Magics) generally form their own societies. They establish societies outside of the Elven Kingdoms that fit their Race.
Undines settle near lakes, rivers, or other bodies of fresh water. Fairies normally form communities in the woods or plains around the Undines. Sprites live closely with nature and live off what the land provides. They do not hunt, appalled by the idea of taking life, and instead live entirely off plants.
Lycans and Anthros generally settle separately but both live in the woods. Lycans packs are based on strength. The strong rule and the weak follow, much like wolves. They hunt for all their food and never form permanent settlements, as they always follow the game. Lycan children are carried with the pack until they are old enough to learn to Transform. Lycans are the largest of all the Lesser Races because their children are taught to be Lycans rather than Elves.
Anthros generally form packs and societies based on Race. For example, cat-Elves will form a society separate from the fox-Elves, but they may join with the lion- or tiger-Elves for larger hunting areas.
Mermen generally reside in large lakes apart from the Undines. They form societies in caves near the water. The Mermen that form lungs will find their way to the Ocean if they can. There, they form giant underwater cities.
Centaurs prefer to form herds in the plains far from the Elven Kingdoms. Over the years, a Centaur library has been built that rivals the knowledge of Rhenhao. Centaurs are generally Transformed Elves from Naolisk. They value knowledge above all else and find all other Races inferior.
With the exception of Lycans, most Lesser Races abandon their children in nearby Elven villages. It is generally believed that if the child id truly of their Race, they will Transform on their own and return to their society. In some cases, the parents will refuse to give up their child. These children are cared for by the parents in the same way Lycan children are. Mermen, however, seldom have the choice to raise their children. The children would be unable to survive in the water and the parents are unable to survive out of water. The children of Mermen are left on the banks of the water in the hopes that someone will happen upon them.

Half-Elves

In recent years, a few Humans have strayed into the Realm. Humans are normally shunned by Elves for turning from the gods and the Temples have ordered that no one associate with the Humans. However, as with the Demons, some Human-Elf couples emerged. The children of these unions are much stronger physically than pure Elves. However, their control and understanding of magic is weak. Half-Elves have almost no magical ability. No matter how hard or how much they study, they never even learn the simplest magic arts.
Half-Elves are defined physically by their strength and rounded ears. While an Elf's ears are normally 3 to 5 inches long and form a point at the end, Half-Elves' ears are never longer than 3 inches and don't reach as drastic a point. Some Half-Elves will even have human ears.
Most Half-Elves are shunned, but never as drastically as Half-Breeds. Half-Elves are often admired for their superior physical strength. In Hunra, Half-Elves are given highest honors because they make such powerful warriors.

Thus ends the Scholars account of the History of Kinai.

Soon to follow shall be the Scribes of Hun's account of the First Realm War.

(though first I'll probably put up Kinja, the Book of Gods)
