Reizei found himself smiling indulgently to the maid as he waved for her to seat herself in the small space between himself and Shizuka. "Nonsense. You have the gift of speech for a reason." He said coolly, looking rather pleased with himself. "And certainly you should be able to speak well, for I can only imagine all of the chances a maid such as yourself has to listen to others." This poor little maid was almost pathetic, he noted. "It is important to respect authority, but that does not mean it should be feared." He added, absently brushing a few strands of hair behind his ear.

His expression lit up when he heard Shizuka's laugh and he looked over to the Shirabyoshi, his eyes glowing. It was clear that she had decided no longer to be so closed to him, which was a relief. "I would speak to a commoner if I could, Shizuka-san. People have a lot to say that I would like to hear. Conversations with you entertain, but it is also nice to have conversations that inform." He offered the woman a genuine smile.

Speaking to only attendants, family, and political figures grew extremely boring after a while. The emperor was going to use this temporary disguise to the best of his abilities.

Sachiko was certainly not trying to be pathetic. She didn't think of herself as pathetic at all. After all, she'd been born well, and she would be trained, one of these days. She was just out of her element. She'd never been quite this cornered, and she really wasn't sure whether she should let her guard down or assume it was a test.

She hesiated again before she claimed the space Reizei indicated. "I'm not afraid," she blurted, then blushed and amended, "I can speak, ue-sama. I only mean that the things I speak about most often would most certainly not interest you. Shizuka-sama," she pointed out with a little bow toward the other woman. Yes, she knew who she was, of course, by name and reputation and, all right, gossip too. "She is far more entertaining when it comes to words and songs and such."

Shizuka raised her brows to Reizei as he spoke, barely comprehending he. He was interesting certainly, but so utterly hard to comprehend! Of course, he couldn't see her skeptical expression. Her makeup was well-done and most of her expressions were nowhere near extreme enough to truly show. The woman gazed to the emperor-in-disguise in silence as he explained himself.

"So..." She murmured, looking uncertain. "Mikado-san merely values knowledge firsthand?" She was rather sure that this was it, at least. It sounded... logical, and she hardly wanted to think of this kind man as mentally ill.

Her eyes flicked to the maid as she spoke, and she silently agreed with this, but remained silent. It was best to hear these things firsthand from this strange noble, she figured. He didn't seem the type to leave himself utterly unexplained.

Reizei smiled graciously to the young maid as she explained herself, nodding absently. "Yes, she is, but that is something you will learn in time." He glanced to Shizuka and nodded to the woman, looking pleased with the progress she was making. "Yes," He murmured. "You may not think you have anything to talk about, but I'm sure you do... What is your name?" He brought his sake cup to his lips, sipping it as he watched the maid.

He didn't understand why his behavior seemed to be so perplexing and so ignored this. It wasn't worth acting reserved; his attendant's name could hardly be soiled by all of this. The reputation of the emperor's attendant was hardly a big deal...

That was true, she had to admit. In time, she would learn to become as fascinating as the Shirabyoshi. As in demand, she hoped, as the most well known of them. The thought made her smile, a little, and she bowed over her knees again, ducking her head in an attempt to hide the obvious expression.

"Toyama Sachiko, ue-sama," she answered, bowing yet again, this time so low that her forehead nearly touched her knees before she sat up again. Because she was still perplexed, she added, "But I do not know how talk of washing clothes and sweeping floors could be interesting."

Shizuka smiled wanly to the man she was unaware was the emperor, glancing to the maid as she told the noble her name. She mulled it over momentarily, and, once she had made sure she was unable to place it, gave up. She was rather good with names if she could say so herself, and would keep this one in mind. She had no particular reason to; it was more of an automatic thing that the Shirabyoshi was wont to do.

"Yes, Mikado-san. I cannot recall having to say anything of worth as a maid." Shizuka chimed in, brushing her long dark hair behind her ear, her maroon lips forming into a rueful smile directed at both the maid and the emperor.

Being a maid was boring to say the least, and also very strenuous and grueling. It was hard to believe many maids could be turned into gorgeous, well-cultured women who danced to the Gods and the men of the court. Still, it was a way of survival. Starting from the beginning was perhaps the hardest thing you could do. All you needed was decent endurance, really. Low rank passed over time.

Reizei nodded as the maid spoke her name. "What a pretty name, Sachiko-san." He responded, his tone bright. "Maybe it could be interesting. Don't you keep the court running in a way?" It was probably true that Reizei was too curious and complimentary for his own good, but it was also true that he was enjoying himself. The emperor realized he was likely being very frivolous at this point, but wasn't that was normal nobles did?

"I am Kurodo no Mikado." He added in introduction, lying with a pleasant expression on his face. He quite enjoyed introducing himself, actually. It was not something an emperor did; everyone automatically knew who the emperor was. Taking pleasure in simplicities was largely a part of why Reizei went masquerading in this way, although he could not go among those of more prominent status when he did so or it was likely he would be recognized.

"Well, Shizuka-san, memory is a fickle thing." The man replied lightly, shrugging his shoulders.

Not only had she been noticed, but she'd been complimented. Twice! Since he'd called her Sachiko-san. Days like these didn't happen often at all, and Sachiko couldn't help but be a little pleased, though that, at least, she could hide. She bowed again, instead, low over her knees. "Thank you very much, ue-sama. Mikado-sama," she amended when the man gave his name.

She tried not to look surprised at his response to Shizuka. She tried not to look embarrassed, as well, as she straightened slowly. It sounded like a slight reprimand to her ears, and no one wanted those in front of others, particularly their lessers.

"I suppose," she allowed, to try to alleviate the moment, "that a maid helps things to run, a little, yes, ue-sama."

Sure enough, after Reizei had made the comment, Shizuka's lips tugged down into a pronounced frown, and although it didn't ruin her beauty, it didn't compliment it, either. "Of course it is, Mikado-san." She replied, sounding positively icy. Although Mikado didn't look like he'd honestly noticed he'd given such an insult, she was rather humiliated. In front of this maid of all people, too!

Shizuka ground her teeth together in a manner that wouldn't be noticeable to anyone but the most attentive person. She wasn't really angry. Just suddenly upset and embarassed, really. This nobleman, dressed as richly as he was and with his high rank had practically just called her a fool for her comment.

Her brown eyes shifted to the maid, assessing the girl. Shizuka wasn't cruel, but things would not be good if this comment was one of the topic's of the next day's gossip. She sighed shortly, composing her features and trying to look politely to Reizei although her eyes were likely sullen.

Reizei noted his mistake all too soon after he had made it. He nodded quickly to the little maid, smiling briefly before standing abruptly. "I have enjoyed your companies, Shizuka-san, Sachiko-san, but I'm afraid I must excuse myself. I have business to attend to." Besides that, it was indeed getting late, and his nitpick attendant Mikado would be just about ripping his hair out waiting for the emperor.

He smiled slightly, hoping he hadn't completely offended the Shirabyoshi before turning lightly on his heel, walking with an elegant step out of the performance hall. ...Women. They were much too accomplished when it came to ruining some things, he thought, exasperated.

Sachiko bowed yet another time when the nobleman left and did her best to stay out of the way of his feet so he wouldn't stumble over her. Only when she was sure that he was gone did she lift her head, glance at Shizuka, and then start to gather herself, tray and bottles and all.

She paused for a moment before standing to ask, "Would you like sake, Shizuka-sama?"

Shizuka glanced to the maid, looking distracted. "I'm fine." The woman murmured with some dignity, watching Reizei leave. He confused her, and this was probably clear by her lightly furrowed brow underneath the drawn-on brows. She pursed her lips and let out a tiny huff of a sigh, folding her hands carefully in her lap and smoothing her robes as she glanced to the closest noble, who appeared to be engaged in a drinking game.

Men such as that were not interested in the company of a Shirabyoshi when the woman served her actual purpose. Shizuka was now gazing haphazardly into space, having forgotten about the presence of Sachiko, clearly in a sort of puzzled reverie.

Sachiko didn't want to just walk off and be rude. Then again, she didn't want to demand the shirabyoshi's attention either. She had other, more important things to do, no doubt. No matter how confused or distracted she looked, despite the fact that she hadn't moved, herself. She didn't need to to make people notice her, after all.

Still, it took her a moment to dare to say anything else. "I'm sure he didn't mean anything, Shizuka-sama. Sometimes, words don't come out the right way."

Not too far away, a few seats over a young gentleman can be seen busily jotting down notes of some sort with a brush in his hand. His expression seems to be a bit preoccupied. He looks around the hall, as if seeking for something. Few words are mumbled, yet not clear "your eyes are like the stars...no that won't do". It is not easy being a poet for some days inspiration is easy one day, yet harder on others.

Hearing some voices nearby, he can not but help to listen; especially when two of the voices are coming from such dazzling stars. Looking over their persons with such admiration, he loses track of the poem he was writing. "Mhhmmm..... The night's life livens with the passing minutes" saying to himself as if he should dare to make his way over. Placing his finger tips gently through his hair as a smirk crosses his face, trying to make himself look as appealing as can be. Watching them more closely he spies their conversation, eager to find his way in.

Shizuka glanced down to the maid, looking dimly surprised that the young girl had spoken. "Of course." She murmured, although she was barely reassured by this. She supposed she appreciated the maid's kindly words, but it was hard to say. Maids usually were expected to be seen and not heard. She looked to the maid uncertainly as she surreptitiously fidgetted her delicate hands, her gaze now moving across the room.

Her eyes landed slowly on a noble who seemed to be looking in the direction of herself and the maid. She couldn't quite place him, although he appeared vaguely familiar. Indeed, it was hard to say who many people in the room were just by looking at them. Introductions were almost always necessary here. Instead of speaking further, she sent him a look of questioning. Would he come over or did he merely care to eavesdrop?
