"If you want to check fine, but I really doubt there's much reason." She said with a shrug. Normally she was a much happier, peppier girl. Today her mood swings decided that Jaded was the flavor of the week.
Damaris did as she was told, exposing the swollen belly that contained a living baby within it. She was some what interested in it, but she had to keep telling herself not to be. She couldn't get attached, it would only make it harder.

Angela exhaled a silent sigh. She would know, because she was the one who could see the screen; it had to be turned for the other two to see it. But if Damaris really wasn't interested, she wouldn't make the girl look.
She gently spread a layer of the gel on Damaris' tummy, then picked up the wand and put it into position. The machine hummed louder, and a grainy, barely readable image appeared on the screen.
As she moved the wand around, she noted the length of the fetus, as well as several other important factors about the baby, making pleased noises as she did.
And the baby was, in fact, female, though she hesitated to tell either of them this.

Damaris lay there seemingly uninterested. Her eyes gazed off into space. She really tried to have as little to do with this baby as she could, she refused to allow herself get even a little attached, it was already hard enough.
"Is...the baby healthy?" AJ asked from his seat. He wanted to make sure everything was going alright, Damaris was as he was told, the first D-Corp child to ever become pregnant. So he was praying to god that there weren't any complications.

Angela glanced away from the screen, her eyes lighting momentarily on Damaris' seemingly uninterested person, then finished their journey towards AJ.
"Oh, yes... the baby is healthy," she answered with a smile and a nod, having paused for a split second when she almost used the feminine pronoun.
"As far as I can foresee, there will be no problems. Has it been decided how the birth will happen? Naturally or via cesarean?" she asked, since she hadn't seen that in her notes. Natural births were usually best, but sometimes C-sections were preferred.
Since Damaris was a healthy girl, and the baby didn't seem too large, Angela didn't see the need, but it wasn't really her decision. That would be the decision of the delivering doctor, as well as Damaris and AJ.

"Well, since a D-Corp kid has never had a child yet before...we're going to leave it up to the doctors here." AJ said with a nod, "We don't need any complications."
Damaris was zoning out again but not before having glanced momentarily at the woman when she said the baby was alright. It was a quick falter in her facade. She was trying her best to not get attached to the baby but all this talk about it was starting to get to her.
"So are we done then?" She finally asked impatiently. She wanted to go home, she wanted to not care, she wanted this whole thing to be done with.

Angela hadn't missed the split second interest Damaris had shown. She felt a pang of sympathy for the girl, and sighed silently.
"Yes, there's nothing more we can do here today. All that's left is to wait until the delivery date, now, unless something unexpected comes up. The bloodwork should be done in a couple days..."
Angela paused as she looked down to her hands, at the ultrasounds she'd printed out for the records. Damaris might not want them now, but... she glanced up at AJ, wondering. She could make another print...
For right now, though, she handed Damaris a washcloth, and then a towel, so she could clean the goo off of herself.
"Here you are, Damaris," she said as she held them out.

Damaris took the wash cloth with a nod. She wiped the gunk off of herself and then got up to go change, "I'll be right back..." She said as she grabbed her clothes and headed back to the bathroom.
"I'm sorry she was a little rude..." AJ said once Damaris was out of ear shot, "She's been having a hard time with this." He said. The man looked very ragged himself. This whole thing had also put him through a lot of stress. His daughter, his little girl, and there was nothing he could do.
Damaris came back a few minutes later dressed and ready to leave.

Angela shook her head gently.
"It's understandable, really. This must be a trying time for both of you," Angela said, wishing it didn't sound so... trite.
Once Damaris returned, Angela turned to the both of them and said, "I can guess what the answer will be... but I should ask if you would like a copy of any of the ultrasound pictures," she offered, gesturing to the file she'd set aside.

"No." Damaris said flatly, walking to the door. She just wanted nothing more than to get out of here. What she wanted even more was to go see Valens. She missed him so much...but she didn't know what on earth he would think about her now that her condition was obvious.
AJ got up from his seat and over to Angela. He picked up the pictures and slid them up his shirt so Damaris wouldn't see. He turned his gaze to Angela, "Thank you," He said, thanking her for both her help, and understanding before he walked over towards Damaris, "Ready?"
Damaris nodded her head.

"You're welcome... and if you ever need a friendly ear, you know how to find me," she said. She wasn't really a counselor, but she knew how to listen and not judge.
She smiled a small smile as AJ picked up the pictures, hiding them away. Damaris might want them some day, even if she didn't right now.
"I hope we meet again," she said to both of them as she walked them to the door of her office, and added silently, under better circumstances, perhaps.

"Thank you," AJ said with a nod as he and his daughter headed out. He turned around briefly, "Thank you for understanding, it means a lot, to the both of us." He said with a nod before the two finally left, disappearing down the hallway.
