"Really?!" she asked, unable to keep the excitement from her eyes. Her spirits seemed to want to soar, and she couldn't really understand why. A compliment given to her any other day wouldn't really have had any effect other than to give her a pleased grin. She couldn't help doing a little bounce in place and smiling, "Thank you! I know more French songs, if you want me to sing them instead of the others I know."
(We shall have to have him predict some natural disaster, then, wont we? ninja )

((Yush. ^^ Though don't expect immediate retribution; I like him being a sourpuss. X3))
JoJo watched Tolfitken bounce with unease, as though he feared she would jump on him if he denied her anything. "S-sure, fine, whatever you want." Inside, he didn't really mind; songs in varying languages were to him more soothing. Always it seemed like people who did not share the language he knew had more freedom of expression with their words and melodies.

(I know, it's more fun that way whee )
"So," she asked, quietly settling down and stabilizing herself, "What do we work on next?" She was eager to sing, especially if she could continue to sing in French, but she wanted to know what else she could do to improve. Wondering if she should try a harder song next, she ran through her list of French songs in her head while waiting for JoJo to tell her what they were going to do to continue the lesson.

JoJo looked noticably relieved that Tolfitken had stopped bouncing. Now he shrugged and looked at her seriously. "All you have to do now is practice. Use the things I showed you, and you'll move mountains with your voice." He made a sound of disgust at the phrase he had used; 'move mountains?' Well, you ARE a walking disaster predictor; stands to reason you'd be constantly thinking that way. He shook his head and spoke quickly, lest Tolfitken think the noise of disgust was for her. "Sorry; bad choice of words."

Tolfitken beamed and opened her mouth again, having chosen the song she wanted to sing next. When he made a revolting sound she paused, her eyes gazing at him uncertainly until he explained. "Oh... Why would it be a bad choice of words?" She personally had thought it sounded a little poetic, and she didn't think he as a singer could detest poetry, so she looked over at him and cocked her head to the side in confusion.

JoJo fidgeted, trying to think of a better explanation and not really wanting to give one. "Well.....you know!" His voice had a definite hint of irritation, and his high level of emotion caused it to come out in a sort of squeak. He shook angrily, not at Tolfitken, but at his crazy jumbled up self for not being able to say exactly what he wanted to. He didn't even want to explain, and yet he felt Tolfitken had a right to know. Then he would wonder why; he hardly knew her. Then why with the singing advice? Back and forth it went until he was unknowingly tearing at teh ground beneath him with his claws.
((With his one line of dialogue, I can't resist: "We like, worked our tails off you know! Like a lot! And the food we gathered was......you know! And you're....you're all whatever!" mad (If you know what movie that's from, you are SO getting love-glomp-smushed. =3)))

"Are you alright?" she asked, wanting to pad closer to him in worry and put the dirt he had dug up back in its place, and it took almost all of her self-restraint not to. She hadn't meant to make him mad... It was just that yet again she'd said the wrong thing. And yet again she wondered why she would care; before she would just have said something scathingly witty and laughed. Now she wanted to help, and not be a scource of anguish. She tried to correct her mistake with a small-voiced, "You don't have to say why if you don't want to..."
(I know I've heard it before, but I can't remember where it's from...)

(('Tis my favorite line from Over the Hedge. 3nodding ))
JoJo let out the tiniest of moans; all his trying not to send Tolfitken flying off in tears and here he had gone and blown it. What was happening to him? Just a few fortnights ago he would have relished making her this way; was it her likewise passion for singing that made him so understanding toward her? It made his love of song seem tainted, if it could draw him into another situation where he would dare to hope and have his hope dashed to pieces before his eyes. Was nothing safe for him to love? He did something that he had taught himself to do when he felt overcome with grief; he let a certain song play inside his mind, and when it reached it's heart-wrenching crescendo, he imagined the notes rushing up from the ground and through him like a geyser, taking all of his grief and turmoil with it, vanishing in a spray miles above the earth. In only a minute he was able to sigh and open his eyes, his feelings once more conquered and locked away. "Don't worry about it." he said curtly. "Being associated with disasters, I try to avoid such cliches."

Far from running off in tears she had been, but his reply hurt her almost as much as it had when Obsidian had begun to ignore her. "Oh," she said quietly, "Al right." Discarding the song she had been about to sing she brought a new one to her mind, falling automatically now into the proper posture and letting the music flow from deep within her. It resonated in her ears, making her feel as she had when she first heard JoJo's sad song, and she had to resist the urge to fight the tears. This time it was her iniating the feelings, she had learned somewhat to sing. No one was going to take that away from her. Not Obsidian and her betrayal, not JoJo and his cold words or the confusion he invoked within her. Not even the fact that she couldn't pronounce Italian as well as she could French and once again her voice was a touch too sweet for the part. The music was hers, and the words reveberated gloriously in her bones until she thought they would shatter and pierce her heart.
Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole! Fu in quel dolore che a me venne l'amor! Voce piena d'armonia e dice Vivi ancora! Io son la vita! Ne' miei occhi è il tuo cielo! Tu non sei sola! Le lacrime tue io le raccolgo! Io sto sul tuo cammino e ti sorreggo! Sorridi e spera! Prendilo dunque. Io son già morta cosa!
She made no attempt to dry her eyes or move, fearing to speak both because she didn't want to say the wrong thing and because she no longer trusted her voice to stay steady throughout a sentence.
(My favorite line is "But I like a cookie!")

(That one's a close second. whee These two need a mind meld. xd )
JoJo felt like a heel as instead of placating Tolfitken, his words seemed to have the opposite effect. It was all he could do to not shout, "What do you want from me?!" Then again, he might have the slightest inkling of what she wanted. She might want to be friends, or more. And he didn't think he would be able to give that to anyone, no matter what. That gift had been thrown back at him so many times; it probably wouldn't survive one more giving. Better, he thought, to hold it close and revel in the thought that no one else will abuse it and leave his heart a little more stone than before. He found himself almost too absorbed in his mental fortress to lose himself in the music the way he had before, but he did hear and observe. Hmm....Italian...my favorite. Nice song....sounds familiar......have I heard it somewhere before? Maybe someone's CD player..... He sighed and hung his head, feeling emotionally drained, almost wishing this entire encounter was over and done with; he had a yearning to go off somewhere and have his own chance to pour his heart out. For as much as he wanted to think it was, his heart was not made out of stone, but full of pain and anguish that constantly begged for release. As the song finished, his expression was tired and sad, but his eyes remained dry. Somehow, he just couldn't make the tears come.

Her song ust not have been as good as his was, she thought, seeing that he remained unmoved. Surprisingly, instead of making her close herself off as she had with Obsidian, it made the tears flow more. She looked down at the ground, trying to hide her face with her ears. Her voice had left her, she knew, it didn't want to make itself into words and rise from her soul. Instead, a moan escaped her, not really a moan it was her voice, the voice she had just been practicing with, only it had taken on a wordless form. Dripping with sadness and a want to understand, it echoed through the trees like a howl, until she was sure all of Namiah had heard it before she finally ran out of breath and layed down on the ground to desolately rest her chin on her paws.

More surprised than anything else, JoJo still heard the cry echoing in his ears, and he felt as though every last hair on his body had stood straight up. Breathing heavily, he let his fur settle back into place and waited for the ring to fade before observing the slumped form of Tolfitken on the ground. He shut his eyes and hung his head; he knew that kind of cry. It silently screamed inside of him so often; he would know it with or without sound. How did this go so wrong? What had happened to the singing lesson, the wonderful sharing of a common joy? They were so close to developing a genuine friendship. And now...... Suddenly, all thoughts were violently dashed to the back of his head, and an all too familiar feeling replaced them. His entire body stiffened, and his eyes were suddenly bright and hard. He no longer slumped, but held his entire body erect, like an arrow ready to dash from the bow. Opening his senses, he felt his one true talent going to work. The air had grown colder, the clouds had tripled and darkened, and the wind was beginning to cause the trees to whisper among themselves. His entire body rigid, he frantically looked at Tolfitken, on the ground, oblivious. His voice came out as a frantic hiss. "Tolfitken! Hssst! Get up!"

Her thoughts were a myriad torrent of thoughts and confused emotions that threatened to drag her under when JoJo called out to her. She blinked and looked up at him with empty eyes, her ears taking a moment to sense the urgency in his voice. Immediately jumping to life, she sat and looked around warily, her blue and red eyes taking in about a glint of curiousity and alarm. "What is it?" she asked, quickly dashing over to him and looking around again. A cold breeze tugged at her fur and she sensed a small bout of unease, but as she was unable to place it directly, she looked again to JoJo.

"Got it!" she said, her eyes hardening with the situation as she began to cast around for a ditch, dashing farther into the trees when she didn't find one in sight, "You're coming, too, right?" Only beginning to wonder what was going on, she trusted JoJo's knowledge of the situation, scrambling to dig into a shallow dip she'd found between two close-growing trees. She twined her paws into the smaller roots and ducked her head as a large gust of wind dragged at her ears, sitting up again to look for JoJo before the wind came back. Her breath stopped and her ears popped, and she winced as she realized the entire forest had gone as still as if it had been frozen in glass.
