Purchase...

Kaya brushed back silver hair as she appraised the shops through their windows, her eyes idly flicking over the products she could see from her vantage point on the sidewalk. Nothing she needed and nothing she really fancied. Still, one always had to look, yes?

A small gust of a sigh escaped the young woman’s lips as she continued to observe, though she paused in front of the scent shop. Might as well grace at least one place with her presence. Besides that, it wasn’t as if the shop looked intimidating at all.

Kaya enter and nodded slightly to the shopkeeper before smiling at the myriad of scents that greeted her. Things that smelled nice were always so lovely.

She knew she’d be unable to resist buying a scent here to take home and light, in any case. It seemed a shame to do any differently. “Ah.” She murmured each time she recognized one of the many fragrances. Kaya knew mostly what she was looking for, in any case. She wanted a cup that smelled like the perfume of a flower. Something delicate and aromatic to light in her apartment.

“Here.” Her lips curved into a smile as the distinctive scent of the lotus blossom greeted her. “Very nice~” She sang lightly to herself, delighted with the lightly-colored oil in the cup before her.

“Hello,” She said warmly, walking up to the counter. “I’d like to buy this one.”

Lighting...

Walking home was grueling; there were grey puddles everywhere that had to be avoided, and the day was overcast and dreary. Kaya's inspiration felt quite blotted out and she entered her apartment with a ragged sigh, letting out a small sneeze immediately afterward. Sickness and bad weather made a formidable pair.

Kaya had set the small cup on the mantlepiece a few days ago. She now approached it, smiling as she once again leaned forward to inhale the scent of the lotus. Perhaps the scent would give a warmer element to her apartment, without her having to turn on the heat and run up the electricity bill. Yes, and it could also help her spirits, when she thought about it. As a freelance photographer, the meager living she made always fluctuated in accordance to her mood, and a bad mood could often mean living a rather bare life.

The young woman opened a nearby drawer, fumbling around for a pack of matches. "Here we are." She murmured, her voice warm as she struck the match, sauntering back over to the mantlepiece to light the candle beneath the oil. "Ooh, this is going to smell so nice." Kaya commented dreamily, blowing out the match and watching as the smoke from the oil began to rise, permeating the air with its intoxicating scent.

There was only one thing wrong here. The smoke; this smoke was like no other smoke Kaya had ever witnessed. It was extremely elegant; undescribably beautiful, now both in sight and smell. "..I think," Kaya murmured to herself, "that this is going to be extremely unpredictable." There was uncertainty in her voice, but there was also slight amusement, and, underneath that, excitement.

And so began the therapeutic reign of the scent of the Lotus in the eccentric photographer's apartment.

Awakening...

Kaya had forgotten about the lit scent, slowly burning away to what she would have assumed was nothingness. Not that she well dwelling on the fact that she'd left the flame lit in her apartment. Indeed, she'd been out having come home only to realize that there was not one morsel of food left in the small dwelling. Kaya had never been the most prompt grocery shopper, either.

Now, loaded down with microwavable goods, she entered the apartment, sighing and breathing in the copious scent of lotus. It took a few moments to register the fact that she had indeed left the oils burning. Kaya sighed yet again, dropping her bags in the doorway to internally berate herself for the mistake. She could have easily burnt the whole apartment complex down, but that wasn't what she was dwelling on currently. No, Kaya had regrets about instead wasting the gorgeous scent.

She bent down, extracting microwavable noodles from her grocery bags and kicking her shoes off, choosing the path of disarray. She'd get the bags later. The photographer walked down the tiled hallway without a care in the world, letting out a ridiculous little squawk as she suddenly went skidding into the wall, having slipped on an oily substance on the floor.

"What was that?" The woman gasped to herself, stomping into the living room, already getting horrible ideas about unknown slippery substances on her floor. She flicked on the lights, looking rather disgruntled before her expression froze completely. A delicate child sat on her floor, charming a stray kitten Kaya had toted home the other day(this was despite pets not being allowed in the apartment complex). The child was slimed in oil, as was the cat by now, but both creatures looked content. The burner was cracked and the candle wax was split. Kaya's first thought was that the kid had gotten in and spilled oil on herself.

Abilene's eyes flicked up to Kaya and she smiled serenely at the woman, ignoring her clear-cut shock and instead pointing demurely to the kitten she was toying with. She was a quiet girl, as was even clear by her outward appearance.

"Uh, yes, it's a kitty. How did you get in here, little girl?" Kaya asked, looking irked. She loved children, but this was rather suspicious.

Abilene giggled softly, gesturing to the cracked burner. "That is where I come from." She spoke, pronouncing her words carefully. She was clearly a child, but she was mature.

"The oil burner..." Kaya stared at Abilene, shaking her head once or twice. What was the use in acting abnormal anymore? Didn't she love this kind of thing? There hadn't been enough oil for this child to have spilt on herself, either. "I... Why don't we just get you cleaned up now?" Kaya walked over to the child, smiling and picking up the oiled-down kitten. "And then we can feed you dinner..."

Kaya would not fully connect to the fact that the child was the product of the lotus scent until later. For now she saw no reason not to welcome the child, although it would take a good few hours to get up all the oil. Besides, it would be good to have company and a new subject to photograph. Perhaps the delicate child would even be there to stay.

Journal entry...

Dear journal,

Today Kaya took me to a cafe, where she met someone she knew and wanted to take pictures of. His name was Tango, but not like the dance. His mother was May. It was odd; I don't think he liked Kaya much, but she really liked him. Maybe she was just being scary; it's weird until you get used to it!

In any case, Tango came over to our table and talked to me; he also took away my tea. He gave me coffee instead, although Kaya didn't notice. She doesn't think children should drink coffee, that's it's too... 'adult', but Kaya's not a huge fan of the bitter taste so maybe that's it. My coffee was very sweet, though. I think I rather liked it.

Tango said he was another scent by the way. Mango; another scent just like me.

He led me to meet May after I finished drinking the coffee, but I don't know if I gave off the best impression. Tango ended up snapping at me, but that was fine, because I have a feeling it was only because he hadn't wanted May to talk about his panties.

Afterwards, the most puzzling thing happened! He tripped over his pants, and they fell off. I thought he was wearing shorts, but May said it was boy underwear. I decided not to inquire further because, well, Tango seemed to be very frazzled! I want to ask someone later, though.

Journal entry...

Dear diary,

I think I'm just surrounded by adorable little children! The other day I went to the cafe with Abilene to grab some pictures and(what luck!) Tango was there! He's just the cutest little kiddie in the world and he thinks he's such a grown up! I met his mom, May, and got a few great pictures of him!

Afterwards, we talked for a while. Though somehow when I actually looked, Tango and Abilene were at another table! In any case, I'm sure they'll be great friends. Cute little kids, both of them! And my dear Abilene is so mature, I'm proud of her. She's insisted on cleaning the kitchen again, but I haven't spilled that much lately, you know. It makes me feel a little bad with her acting like some sort of maid!

Oh, she's cute anyway.

Journal entry...

Dear journal,

I went to the rain festival with Kaya the other day and it was very fun! There was much singing and dancing and I was glad to watch, and Kaya actually let me go off on my own at one point!

I met two other scents just like me, too. Phoenix and Celyn. We ended up talking for a while, and I think I actually made friends. Kaya says I'm very shy, and I guess that's true, but I don't have to be shy around friends. I read once that you're supposed to trust friends completely so wouldn't it be odd if I could hardly bring myself to talk to them? I was sad we were only at the festivals for one day, but at least I was able to meet children my age.

Journal entry...

Dear journal,

I am so lucky to be blessed by such a sweet little girl! Abi is very independent, but that just seems to be her nature. I find her going out on her own more and more every day and it really surprises me. I never pegged her as an explorer before now, but I have a feeling she may be more open than she lets on to other children. Maybe she's shy because she's a Scent? It doesn't seem likely. She smells lovely and from what she lets on there are plenty of other children just like her.

Oh, well. She's a refined little girl to say the least and sometimes I feel like I'm the one being taken care of. Isn't that funny? Well, I suppose it's really actually not, but I think it works out very well, especially because Abilene has taught herself how to cook! I don't understand how that girl does it because I never could, but I'm proud of her nonetheless.

I think Abilene just needs to lighten up a little and talk more! Then she'd be perfect.

Maturity Prompt (Required To Teach Teen Stage)

Learning how to be responsible is an important part of growing up. In order for your scent to mature into a teen, they need to prove that they are capable of taking responsibility for themselves and/or others.

That said, your scent comes home one day with an amazing story that shows how responsible they are. They have rescued a cat, saved up enough money to buy themselves something nice, or saved the world from an evil wizard that tried to divide by zero.

Whether it was ultimately to serve themselves or others, your scent's tale will show traits of maturity that will let them blossom into angry, hormone-driven monsters that act nothing like the sweet children that you fondly remember having.

Be as creative as you'd like with their story, and remember:

RESPONSIBLITY, DO YOU HAS IT?!

Abilene walked through the door, her amber eyes glowing with delight. Finally, she'd had the time to do it! "Kaya, look outside!" the young girl urged, her eyes falling upon her guardian, who'd been sitting on the couch watching some documentary or other on the television. The child grinned, bounding over in order to tug lightly at the photographer's arm. "And bring your camera." she begged, having changed quite a bit from the meek scent that had been born of Kaya's oils. It was no wonder, considering her mother's general temperament.

Kaya was absolutely always boisterous, and had done her best to rub off on Abilene. Still, the scent was acting awfully excited on this particular day. "What's up?" The photographer asked, grabbing the remote and turning off the television before standing, stretching a little(reflecting that she would have to get a freaking full-time job one of these days; Abi made her feel lazy). She trotted after her charge, taking her time on the steps of the apartment building.

"Here!" Abilene motioned delightedly to... absolutely nothing.

"...What is it, honey?" Kaya asked meekly, staring around the grounds of the apartment complex with confusion.

"I... I... Look at the plant beds!"

Sure enough, it looked as if all of the flowers had been carefully replaced and replanted, with careful attention paid to them. "Oh, yes. The gardener hired by the neighborhood association does this every season." Kaya commented absently, sauntering over in order to smell a few of the new rose bushes.

"He let me do it, Kaya!" Abi pointed to herself, unable to help her dazzling smile. "I asked if I could help and he said yes! And he gave me the flowers that had to be pulled up, so we can put them in pots in the apartment!" she exclaimed, looking absolutely starstruck. She'd always encouraged her guardian to go out and buy green plants for the inside of the apartment, but they'd never quite made it to the gardening store. She now pointed in the direction of a myriad of plants in plastic pots, ignoring Kaya's tiny groan of horror.

"Abi, sweetie, that's--"

"Isn't it great? And the gardener even said he'll let me help him water all the plants out here!"

Kaya endured her child's chattering, small grimaces gracing her features every once in a while. "Okay. We can take them up to our apartment-- so long as you take care of the flowers, okay? I won't have any dead plants laying around." She rubbed the back of her head, her green eyes assessing the pots. Abilene had always enjoyed gardens, and Kaya supposed that her direct participation in one would overjoy the child.

--------

Kaya was surprised to see how pleasant the sparsely decorated apartment looked with all the plants once they'd lugged them up. She smiled quietly, her eyes on Abilene who was now carefully watering the flowers, mumbling to them lovingly.

"C'mon, Abi, let's go out to eat tonight." she suggested, deciding to reward the youngster with a nice meal for once. Besides, she still had to get information regarding the gardener; she'd seen him earlier and-- damn --those were some nice muscles. Perfect picture-taking material and then some! The scent's guardian grinned, throwing the strap of her camera around her neck. "Just keep gardening."

Finally, Abilene had found something to make her passionate. It was almost more than Kaya could bear.

"I will." the girl replied, next listing off a few supplies she expected Kaya to buy her in order to take better care of all the plants.

She was slowly becoming acquainted with responsibility.

The slender teenager pinned her hair into an elegant bun and gazed at herself silently in the mirror, her full lips pursed. She was never quite certain what she thought of herself, but she supposed she was satisfactory-- to look at, at the very least. Identification was, apparently, the word of the day and she had yet to find herself beneath the warm pinks and sweet scent.

Being anti-social had never been easy, but she'd quietly endured it, learning to love books as well as classical music(the cello was her favorite). She had taken care of her absent-minded guardian and often wandered to the park, merely to sit and to think. She was an entirely introspective girl, one that shied away from both talk and touch. Lately, she'd come to see it as an issue-- a flaw, something to be fixed.

It was something she needed to fix, or surely she'd make it nowhere, befriended only by painfully long novels.

Abilene stood with a quiet grace and stepped out of her room, glancing wryly to Kaya who had passed out on the couch last night with the television on. She shook her head, turned it off, and then exited the small apartment. Abilene had decided to visit the park today yet again, to sit among the summer blooms and relax, perhaps beneath the shade of a tree.

Anyone who frequented the park might nod to her in acknowledgement, but each and everyone of them had eventually bent their steps in another direction, choosing not to bother the young woman who appeared so serene in her silence.
