She could only watch in mild horror as the red form got closer. She looked at Hodari, ears down. "You couldn't outrun him if you tried! Look at our legs, they're puny next to Daddy's!" She looked back, shrinking down at the sight of her father. But he didn't look angry... She couldn't help wondering why.
Stepping over to his daughter, Bodaway leaned down, grooming her. "Savitri, you should tell me if you're coming out here to play... I didn't know where you were..." Gold eyes turned sideways, noticing the dark cub near by. "And who is this...?" He sniffed Hodari, taking in the scents of all those that had been near him, then smiled. "You made a friend?" There was no comment on his pride, or possible lack of, and there was no anger or hate in his eyes.

Hodari could barely wait for Savitri's answer, though it didn't matter anyhow. The site of the massive red figure approaching was clearly the lion that his friend was talking about. Shrinking a bit where he stood, the cub remained trembling, awaiting whatever fate was to come.
When the large male approached, he only leaned down to begin grooming his daughter. With a cocked brow, Hodari stood confused. The beast of a lion dwarfed even his father, whom he'd always believed to be larger than other pridelander males. After such an intimidating rawr, Hodari was expecting something else from Bodaway.
And then the great male approached Hodari, leaning his head down. Hodari feared being eaten and once again found himself surprised to simply be sniffed. When asked his name, the cub practically yelled it, hoping to satisfy the male quickly. "Hodari! My name is Hodari."

The adult male smiled, chuckling lightly. Though to a cub, it probably sounded deep and frightening. "Why so afraid?" He tilted his head to one side, grinning just a bit. "Do you think I'm going to eat you or something?"
Moving between her friend and father, Savitri looked up almost pleadingly. "You're not gonna make him a slave, are you, daddy?" She didn't try it often, but she put on the saddest, most begging look she could. "Hodari's my friend... I don't think I could stand seeing Wakia and them ordering him around..."

Hodari swallowed hard when the grown male asked why he was frightened. What answer could really satisfy him? Shaking his head no, the cub tried to calm his nerves and prepare his escape. Savitri and he would have another chance to play together, rigtht? Hopefully next time it wouldn't be such a long time between!
Savitri had mentioned slaves during their last meeting, but hearing her beg her father not to make him a slave brought the issue into a very clear light. Taking in a breath, the dark cub held it there and waited for the male's response. Certainly he wouldn't take a small cub as a slave, right? But Hodari couldn't imagine making a slave out of anyone.
As the silence grew longer, Hodari finally released his breath and looked back towards his home. How he'd like to return there and snuggle up close to his mom. Speaking as calmly as possible, Hodari tried to find some way out of it, "It's getting pretty late. Mom would probably want me home by now. You wouldn't be upset if I hurried home, right?"

He could only laugh, finding his daughter's request oddly amusing. "No, I will not." He leaned down, getting eye-level with Hodari. "Yes, home would be a good place for you to go now. It's not safe for a cub alone out here. There's hyenas, leopards... Far less desireable lions to meet.." He paused, then looked sideways in mock worry. "And I hear there are lions out there who would enslave a cub wandering all alone out in the open!" He then stood up, smiling. "But... I am no lion to fear. Now..." He turned to Savitri. "Time to go home." Without another word, he lifted her up by the scruff.
The white cub waved to her friend, blue eyes filled with relief. "Bye, Hodari... I'll see you later!" When she was lifted, she dangled slightly, instinct keeping her from moving. She wasn't stupid, she knew how powerful her father was. She wasn't about to tempt fate and get hurt.

Hodari had to admit that as frightening as Savitri's father came across, all of his words spoke otherwise. He was a friendly, comforting lion with what seemed to be a big heart. He cared for his daughter and Hodari respected that, even if he didn't quite agree with the ways of their pride.
Before Hodari could say anything else, the large male picked his daughter up by the scruff and the cub let out a light laugh. Bodaway certainly looked less intimidating with a small cub hanging from his mouth.
Once his friend had waved goodbye, Hodari did the same and bounded back towards the pridelands. Oh did he have a story to tell his brothers!
