I live in Georgia and I'm going to try out in a week. I am also in 7th Grade. We have to play four scales, (E Flat, A Flat, B Flat, & F Natural) We also have to play the Chromatic Scale And then, An Etude. And after that, Sight Read something. e____e Wish me luck.

I tried out for All-State Band this year. Im in Ky. Well Im a percussionist and we had to play the prepared peice choosin by the KMEA Directors and the secondary piece also choosin by them. And I know for wind players that they had to play all 12 mayjor scales and the Chromatic and there prepared pieces. And then everyone had to do a sight reading piece.

In Texas: 3 etudes are picked from TMEA. We audition segments of each at an All Region competition. (top 7 chairs get into the ALL Region band)
For state, they take the top 2-4 players and qualify them for trying out for state. They would have to do an AREA audition. Several months later, The people who qualify all meet at another place and have their audition with the same music. (different segments from each)
The top chair or the top two chairs make the all state band. Certain sections top chairs would have to record in order to find out if they made it or not. ( I think there are 7 area competitions that determine if you make it or not)

In New Jersey, the first thing you have to do is make Region Band (which follows the same procedures as All State).
NJMEA picks out a solo for each instrument. The also have a range indicated. At the audition, you play excerpts from the solo. You play three scales and a chromatic scale. You do some site reading.
For the scales, you must be able to play the scale all octaves that are encompassed within the range.

I qualified my senior year in HS, and made 4th chair in Kentucky's All-State band in 2005. I was the only person from my HS to make it in 8 years, and since my class graduated, no one else has made it since. crying
We simply had to play a technical etude (witch a lyrical portion; it was long) and sight read. I later discovered that my current trumpet professor here in college was the judge for the sight reading portion. x3

tyrant-o-vicious I live in Texas, we have rounds, we have a practice round first which is All-District band, then a round where it counts, All Region bands(theres 16 regions in Texas I think), they take the top so many from each intsruments that qualify to try out for the All-Area band(theres 4 areas in Texas), then of course the top so many out of each area go on to have a chair test for the All-State band. actually, there are twenty-some regions and like 8 areas maybe (at least but I think there are more) b/c my region is region 17 and we're in Area F (for marching at least, and it doesn't change for region band) last year I was 2nd in region, 9th in area. and they only take 5 in the area. =(

Larry Buffet I have no idea if this is a repeat thread, but since I've never seen one like it I thought I'd bring it up. I live in Florida I auditioned for the band just two days ago. (I play clarinet by the way) I just wanted to know what the procedures for other state's state wide band. Florida's Procedures: Two etudes picked by a board of directors, one is lyrical one is technical. 12 major scales two octaves minimum in under two minutes Sight reading. We ususally get the results about two months later, and the actual event is held in January. Note: These are the 9th-12th grade requirementsOh, and I made it last year, I was fourth chair. Hehe, just thought I'd share. In Alabama these are the requirements: 12 Major scales double octave A melodic scale C Harmonic scale Three octive chromatic Three etudes [one technical, other two more musical] Sight reading * I play clarinet. It's hard. :] The rich schools' kids always get it
