As the mist-shadow replied his first question, Snowpeak found himself a little upset. He still didn’t understand what an Elite was. There were hunters, minders, gatherers… he understood all of those tasks. But what did an Elite do? So they were strong and fast and the minders respected them…. But what kind of task did they do? The mist fledgling wasn’t too keen on further elaborating on his own ignorance and decided to forget about the whole subject. He could always ask Typhoon. He’d definitely answer any question he would ask.
“I’ll be a scout or a hunter.” He said seriously and tilted his head to the side, mimicking Moonstride without even realizing it as the adult mentioned that he might grow up to become an Elite. “Not a gatherer ‘cause I don’t like it down there.” And not an Elite ‘cause I don’t know what they do.
The reappearance of the Lani brought a smile to the fledgling’s beak as he realized that he was happy that the companion didn’t seem very fond of him. If he had a Lani, he definitely wouldn’t want it to go around being all nice and asking for attention. No, this was fine. He didn’t talk much, he was obedient, answered only to his owner… and he hunted just like Sentinels did. He was perfect.
“I like him. I don’t know why I’ve never seen one like him. I even saw a weird lizard once. War… wari. wara… something with war. It was weird. And I saw a furry one, too. It just kept asking about eggs but we didn’t have any.”As far as conversations went, Snowpeak wasn’t the best topic starter but given previous history he was actually making an extraordinary effort to keep the huge Sentinel talking to him.

There was a moment of pause where Snowpeak gave an expression that appeared slightly disappointed or thoughtful or somewhere in between. Perhaps it was something Moon had said. The older sentinel gave it a thought. Before arriving at any decent conclusion, the fledgling spoke up again. She was pleasantly surprised at his manner of speaking and it seems he had already given his task serious thought. "Those are good professions. In fact, I was a scout myself before."
Quietly, she noticed his eyes flicker to Rave. She had anticipated fear or anxiety from the fledgling; however, instead, she found him amused or pleased. That made her day. Rave was a creature that too often made enemies of other sentinels because of his aggressive and mischievous nature. Thankfully, Snowpeak didn't seem bothered by his presence which lifted a light weight off her shoulders. She turned her head to take a peak at the Lani who turned away from the stares in slight unease. "I'll admit I'm pleasantly surprised. Not many sentinels like him since he can be a wingful and potentially dangerous."
She then grinned at his attempt to pronounce the companion's name. "I believe you mean Waral." Moon was a little hesitant. Warals have the ability to cause quite a bit of damage to even adult Sentinels mostly when angered. For a fledgling to have approached one is worrisome. "Where did you manage to see one?"

Snowpeak was getting increasingly confused. So she was a scout… but changed to Elite? Were they similar tasks? Opposite? He waited for the female to finish speaking as a new plan formed on his mind.
“They say scouts fly higher. Is it true? The older fledglings say it’s dangerous to go too high. Do you fly high? What do Elites do?” he took a moment to breathe and then continued. “The war… waral was near the enclave when I was practicing my flying “ More like sneaking out of the enclave but Snowpeak would rather omit that part “… and he was a graduation gift for a girl who wanted to be a gatherer. They told me to go away because of the war-waral’s tail. But he was small, Typhoon told me wa… those lizards can be huge!” There. The perfect plan. Just hide the real question inside the rest of the blabber. “But you know that of course.” He added, assuming his words were common knowledge and afraid they might be seen as a mild insult to an experienced Sentinel.
He didn’t mention the small avian predator this time but his eyes didn’t leave Rave for even a second. It was fairly obvious he didn’t doubt the creature was dangerous but he also remembered the look of fear in the companion’s eyes when Moonstride shot out of the trees.
“He’d never do anything in front of you.” He chuckled finally eyeing Moonstride with new flame lighting up his fiery gaze. There was so much he wanted to ask her. It wasn’t every day that he faced a strong Sentinel like her who had seen so much and actually bothered to stop and talk to a fledgling like him. And of course, there was the companion. Choosing a creature like THAT had to mean something.

"Only on rare occasions do sentinels fly high enough to be potentially dangerous. I've never had the need to, personally," Moonstride found it increasingly difficult to satisfy the Snowpeak's curiosity. Every question answered led to new wonders and new, more difficult, questions. Then again, perhaps it was a good thing for a fledgling to fill that sponge of a brain before ignorance becomes a serious crime.
Moon then found it necessary to pause at his next question. How should she explain the role of an Elite? The assignments they were given are as varied as the changing light of day. "I would say," She begain, "Elites are chosen to maintain peace amongst sentinels whether it is by punishment, providing protection or with a voice of order." She then paused again before offering Snowpeak a grin. "Lets just say, if you manage to work up any serious trouble in the future, you might get a visit from one of us."
Satisfied with her remark, she thought back to his story about the lizard. It sounded, by his description, as though there wasn't any danger from the encounter since the Waral had been only a young creature. At that thought, she let it slide.
Her thoughts were shifted back to her Lani and his eager remark. "I'll have to admit, it wasn't always like this. I've had my share of disagreements with Rave before the creature finally got it into his pretty little head that I'm actually bigger than him." Rave, during the interaction, was getting more and more agitated by Snowpeak's unmoving stare. He glared back for a moment before sudden snapping both wings out in a display of aggression before tucking them back a slip-second later. Moon eyed him with a look of annoyance.

Maintain the peace amongst Sentinels. Punishers and protectors. Chosen. Those were the words that stuck in Snowpeak’s mind. It was a little bit more complex that he had previously imagined but he didn’t regret his question. It wasn’t something that he would ever aim for… at least he didn’t think so. He had always felt more draw to the simple tasks that didn’t require much socializing. But he now understood the respect Elites were given.
“…if you manage to work up any serious trouble in the future, you might get a visit from one of us.”
Those words bothered Snowpeak more than he could understand it himself. It felt like a disturbing foreboding and Moonstride’s grin, the biggest sign of emotion he had caught from her part was somewhat unsettling. As if they were setting up a date for the future. The day when it wouldn’t be just minders yelling at him for his faults but huge, powerful sentinels with stone faces coming to look for him.
His eyes didn’t meet Moonstride’s this time. He felt small in front of her as if he wasn’t worthy of her time. She was important. It wasn’t like standing in from of the mist girl he raced when he knew what he lacked was not just speed and strength but time… age. The large female had been chosen. That was proof of her superiority. Unusually subdued, Snowpeak eyed the Lani with a blank stare almost as if seeing through him before his eyes drifted to the mist-shadow’s talons. He wasn’t paying attention to the companion anymore and he didn’t feel like he could look the female in the eye anytime soon. A fledgling who kept being labeled as a “bully” and “nothing but trouble” and who had even gotten himself lost should know his place. Could he ever surpass someone like her?
“Typhoon might be worried. My minder. At the enclave.” He said slowly as if making each word linger in his beak before the next. ”But I don’t know which way it his. Do you know Typhoon’s enclave? He’s like... old.” And then as if he was suddenly afraid to be unwillingly approaching the moment when he would have to say goodbye to the large Elite, he added in a quiet outburst, already regretting that he had brought up the enclave as a subject. “Were you always that fast? Did you get strong slowly or were you always like that?”

Moonstride was quiet while her blue eyes took in the brooding form of the mist fledgling. Everything about him took her back to her youth, reminded her of where she had come from. That was something she had forgotten as the winds tightened her wing muscles and bark roughened her claws. But now, it wasn't difficult to remember the days when the trees were larger and the ground closer (mostly when falling). During those years, she had been as arrogant and naïve as they come. It's surprising with the knowledge of where she had now ended up.
Snowpeak suddenly, but slowly, mentioned his minder. Typhoon she knew of because she found it wise to know of all the minders of the forest in case she came across a stranded fledgling much like this one. She knew where the enclave was and found herself instantly mapping out the best path to take. However, a foreign emotion enveloped her body in mid-thought. She could only label it as regret. Moonstride, who is barely able to sustain any decent relations or even conversation with other sentinels, suddenly found herself reluctant to part with a simple fledgling.
Her disturbing thoughts were thankfully interrupted by Snowpeak's outburst. It was another question. She gathered her thoughts back. Was she always fast? She had to grin. Were trees always tall? "No. I was a terribly at flying when I first started. Plus, I'm sure I only seem fast to you just like how younger fledglings see your flying as something quiet amazing."
There was a pregnant pause on Moon's part. Should she address the issue of the minder? She could almost hear that little voice in the back of her head, something she hadn't heard in quite a long time, telling her it wasn't important and that there would be no harm in waiting a while longer. However, it was important and responsibility demanded her attention. "I do know Typhoon (although not personally) and I can escort you back to the enclave. After all, he might be searching for you.

Snowpeak's incessant enthusiasm kept Moonstride fairly amused. She readjusted her wings, suddenly conscious of her body as the fledgling started swaying eagerly from side to side. "I didn't learn any better than the next fledgling. And sometimes I thought it took too long but the work paid off in the end."
She then watched the mist fledgling as he seemed to be contemplating about something. Her feathers slowly loosened again as she eased herself down to rest on the branch. A lazy eye took a quick glance at Rave to check on him and make sure he wasn't getting too bored. The Lani decided it was a good time to take a quick rest, but his eyes flickering open every once in a while. 'Yes!' The fledgling suddenly spoke up, causing Moon to stretch up again and Rave to jump a little. The adult sentinel studied the younger creature suspiciously. He seemed too pleased to have his minder worried and showed no fear of the punishment to come. However, she had already suspected him of being quite a wingful himself, so she slowly let it slide. "I do have the time; however, it would be best to let the Lani say here. I'm sure Typhoon would prefer it."
Then, Moon looked around to monitor the surrounding branches. "We'll start by going in that direction," she indicated with a wing. The aberrant sentinel turned to him quite seriously. "How far can you manage and don't exaggerate.

Snowpeak was fascinated by the mist-shadow’s description of her first attempts at flight. He guessed everyone started out like that. Bad… getting better… becoming good. If she could improve why not him? He’d get better, faster and stronger. It would take some effort but he wasn’t afraid of that.
“I’ll practice. I’ll work hard. Really.” He said suddenly serious. “Why… why can’t he come?” he was looking at the Lani now, tilting his head to the side as his attention focused on the companion once again. “Is he really dangerous? Even with you so close?”
The next question made the fledgling’s eartufts cling to his back. “I’m... bad. Sometimes when I’m not thinking about it, I can move for a long time” Or what would appear as a long time to a young fledgling… “But if I’m thinking too much, I get tired quick. And I can’t move too fast… just some branches at a time.” He wouldn’t dare to exaggerate on something he would be tested at later. Not that he had a tendency to, anyway. After all, he had always been his worst critic.
“How do you do it?” he said suddenly, his familiar question bursting out before he could hold it. “I mean… I move my wings like everyone else but I can’t stay in the air. I don’t get it.”

Moonstride turned to the Lani also. "Rave has issues with personal space. If he gets crowded enough, anything I taught him will fly right out his head. I would rather not risk it." She vaguely remembered the last gathering where she had to beat irritated creature down before it could attack another sentinel. However, that was a long time ago.
The Elite then grin at Snowpeak's discouraged appearance while explaining his flying. Her first flight seemed so long ago and her most prominent memory was those terrible crash-landings. His next question took her by surprise. Well, she hesitated mainly to form a proper answer. Flying had become so natural that she barely thinks about it now. She had to draw up her past experience from her days as a fledgling.
"Probably, the foremost problem would be the habit of frantically flapping when you feel yourself falling. The goal is to pull up the wings faster and flap down in longer, stronger sweeping strides." She paused, remembering something else the fledgling mentioned. "I guess thinking too much is also not good. You might not notice but it causes you to tense up more and pulls by your flight feathers which do not help too much." Moonstride attempted to offer a reassuring smile. "Just relax and trust your wings."

Carefully listening as Moonstride explained her companion’s personal space issues, Snowpeak couldn’t help but to take a small step back… just in case. For a moment he wasn’t sure he’d like to have a companion like that. A constant challenge just to keep it in line, some degree of worry for what it might do, not being able to take it to some places… was it really worth it? Sometimes the Lani sounded more like an opponent than a helper.
Then he avidly heard every word that came from the Elite’s beak, trembling a little at the prospect of being given some vital information that could improve his flying ability. He was slightly disappointed. “I’ve been told not flap so much.” He admitted slowly. “But… I tried it once and hum…I still fell… down… not to the ground!! But… I don’t like it there. Too low.”
He eyed the female for barely a second before speaking up again. “I’ll show you.” He said with a small apprehensive smile before starting to move in the direction Moonstride had indicated earlier. Whether he was referring to the way he flew or the way he fell it was hard to tell. He flapped a couple of times before reaching the next branch, being a little more careful than usual. He did not attempt to make longer jumps and kept his eartufts low, feeling the weight of the experienced sentinel’s eyes on him.

Moonstride tilted her head curiously while the fledgling readied himself for his little preview flight. She had to give him credit for his bravery. The branch he directed his attention to was a few good wing strides away from them that would, although taking quite a while, move them towards the direction of the enclave. She turned her head to the side slightly. It was difficult to tell what he was actually trying to 'show' her; however, the length between branches was just a stretch too small to see any decent air time.
Not forgetting, Moon turned her attention toward Rave. "Stay here," she commanded shortly. The Lani shifted his weight slightly before darting away to a nearby branch to clear the way from the adult sentinel while she took off.
The branch shook slightly as her powerful limbs pushed off. She barely squeezed in three good, large flaps of her outstretched wings before she successfully landed quietly next Snowpeak. "You didn't fall," she offered as a strange mixture of compliment and observation before continuing. "Can you manage until that large branch?" Moon pointed out a fairly cleared landing spot a little lower than their current spot that was a three wingspans further away than their last jump.

Snowpeak watched as the Lani flew away with a hint of regret crossing his fiery gaze.
“I don’t usually fall…” Snowpeak said quietly not sure of how to take the large mist-shadow’s remark. “That one..?” he eyed the branch with some apprehension. Sure, he could do that distance most of the times... but he’d look really stupid if he were to miss it right in front of the Elite. With a wave of ruffled feathers that ran through his whole body, he cleared his mind of all thoughts and doubts.
“I think so. I can handle the distance most of the times.” And with that he dropped from the branch trying to catch a current under his wings. Feeling himself falling, he flapped strongly until he barely reached the branch he was targeting and again flapped madly just to prevent his body from falling backwards. “Lousy landing, stupid branch.” he muttered angrily under his breath.

Snowpeak's response amused her slightly. There was no doubt this particular youth would grow to be something to watch out for. As he took off from the branch, Moonstride watched the fledgling's movement closely with her body eased forwards subconsciously as though ready to take off at any given notice if he should fall. He threw forth a great effort in the form of frantic flapping and managed to make it to the branch relatively safely. Quitely, she followed and landed effortlessly next to him.
"Not bad, if I do say so myself," She complimented with a slight grin as she tucked in her flight feathers neatly back out of habit. "The crash landing, however, will take time to grow out of." That, she spoke from the memory of some slightly amusing but also painful experiences. At that note, she took another look around, scouting for any potential decent sized land spots not too far away. "When did you start your flying lessons?"
The Elite perked up slightly from her scout. Moonstride indicated towards a closer branch that looks fairly sturdy. "Ah, should we try for that one next?"
