Cobalt merely smiled reassuringly at her, and stepped closer in order to carry more of her weight. She called him a gentleman...Cobalt didn't know if that was true or not. He knew that he should be kind to others, although he didn't know why he felt that way...perhaps it was in his blood, the evidence of his non-Kalona half. But, right now, that didn't matter to him. What mattered was helping Airlia...because he would blame himself if she were lost. And that was a guilt he couldn't live with.

"A curse passed down to you by your unsuspecting parents...I do not condemn you for it, you know...I know others probably have, because you, like myself...we're different, as you have already stated. I'm just happy that I can help you...because I have grown fond of you, even though you startled me when we first met." He grinned at her, remembering how she had almost attacked him.

He chuckled a bit at her stare. He imagined that this fierce, beautiful mare was not easily caught off guard. Cobalt wondered how much kindness she had experienced in her life. If her life was like his, there wasn't much kindness in it. "I try to...but some do not approve of such behavior...it was for my mild mannerisms that I was rejected by the Kalona. But...I believe it is in my nature to try to help others...especially my friends, since I don't have that many."

As the stallion moved a bit closer in their strides, her wing shifted a bit more to cover his back completely; making it much easier to keep her balance with such a dizzy disposition she was in. Drawing her gaze away as she became aware she was staring of all things, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks. What the hell was going on with her anywas? One act of kindness and she was starting to become like those frilly little spring mares! Damnit...this better not be what its like to have friends; she wasn't enjoying the fine print or side effects that went along with it.

Okay - what was with him? Happy to help, fond of you!?! Ducking her head a little lower to allow some of her long hair to conceal her probably cherry tinted features, Airlia was definately not used to this kindness. Crudeness, she could take, violence - bring it on! Yet how do you react to kindness? All of her preconceived tactics were useless against it, so all she could do was snort; looking off to the side. "Yeah yeah..." Was all she could say about that little speech.

"I imagine it is because it is not something we are used to. Born in darkness, raised in darkness. Darkness is all we know...its ones like you that shine a bit of light into the abyss..." There! He has said it....Friend. Was that what he really thought of her; as a friend? She could only assume that he had a few; seeing if he could even get her to be civil than others would more plainly see it. "Friend....is that what you will call me? Is there anything that I might need to know about the procedures involved with...friends?" Perhaps he would be able to explain the clauses that went along with having friends...what needed to be done and why on earth she was feeling so...so.....weird around him.

It was obvious even to the blind that this mare; other than her family - had never had a friend.

Procedures of friendship? Cobalt chuckled heartily at those words. Was it possible? Had this mare never experience friendship? "You don't have to do anything, Airlia, except be yourself. Friends don't expect things out of each other...they just accept each other exactly the way they are, no strings attached...haven't you ever had a friend before?" His eyes kind, his question was neither accusing nor derogatory, but of a inquisitive nature, an innocent wondering coupled with astounded disbelief.

Cobalt sighed softly, thinking to himself that the abyss must be dark indeed for him to shed light into it. He couldn't see how he could carry any light within him...no Kalona could spread such a beautiful thing as light, not even one with a gentle soul. But he would not mention his doubts to her. She was the one in need of him right now, he could not burden her with his problems. Perhaps later, if the subject came up again once she had recovered, then he would tell her

"And yes, I would very much like to call you my friend. Would that be okay with you?" Cobalt didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable. He wouldn't want to impose himself upon her, and although he really didn't think she would mind, he wanted to be absolutely sure that she was interested in becoming friends with him.

Be...herself. That was really all there was to having friends? That was the key? Ha. If she hadn't been so dizzy she would have broke out in hysterical laughter at such a foolish thought. Scowling softly, the mare kept on walking while relying the brunt of her weight be shouldered by the stallion beside her. "No...I have never had a friend because its was being myself that had everyone running away, and mother's shielding their foals from me. My only so called friend would have to be my sister...I saw her the most as a foal and we talked a bit. Now she's off seducing i'd imagine..."

Ah; Sabriel. Her only form of dementia was her lust for....well, lust. A real succubus if one would....to love and to kill; it was a dangerous combination but she had many normals; and purebloods after her appearance was the most norm of the kids. Airlia wondered how beautiful she must have been now...she imagined if she saw her she'd still recognize her; even though it had been a year. No matter, and will that the mare gave her head a little shake to rid her of those slightly depressing thoughts.

"Friend.....I suppose it wouldn't hurt - to have at least one in my lifetime. I can really think of no one i'd like more..." Airlia stopped dead in her speech; her ruby pupils dialating for a moment before shrinking into the abyss of her black orbs. She could smell them....a small pack of cyotes nearby, maybe two or three. They must have been scrounging for any kind of food; too bad one of them would end up becoming the main course. Her breathing began to deepen as her chest rose and fell dramatically with each intake of breath. The white mare's lip began to quiver, her ajar mouth salivating more as her fangs seemed even more prominent and long in the pale moonlight. Drawing her full weight off of Cobalt; her wings spread out as tail poised in attack...and with one powerful thrust of her wings she tore through the foliage with precision and desire.

The blood lust had begun.

As soon as she broke through the clearing, her near pure black eyes located the three cyotes and immediately she dove at the largest of the pack. An almost demonic snarl rose from her throat as she whipped out her tail to impale the poor creature in the side; locking it in place as she thrust the canine into the ground...her fangs sinking into its neck despite the terrified and pained yips of rage from the beast. Blood already began to pour from the wounds in it side and into her mouth....it was euphoric, like a drug for the mare as her miniscule pupils rolled back into her head...blissfully unaware of the remaining two cyotes snarling and snapping as they charged her to avenge their packleader.

Cobalt was a bit unnerved at her words. She had truly never had a friend before? Not that his luck was much better. He had only ever had one friend, but she had been his teacher, and therefore been more of his master than his friend. But Airlia...she had never been comfortable to be herself with someone who wasn't family? It saddened him, but he was glad that he would be able to have some sort of friendship with her...truth be told, he himself wasn't exactly sure what friendship was, exactly, but he figured it couldn't be too hard to pull off.

Cobalt had heard tales of bloodlust...but he had never seen it in action before. It seemed to him that suddenly, Airlia's weight disappeared off of his back, and the next thing he knew, the mare that had been almost too weak to stand was tearing through the underbrush with a fierce speed that seemed almost unimaginable.

He, of course, followed behind her, not quite at her breakneck speed, but fast enough to arrive in the clearing in time to see his new friend about to be attacked by coyotes. Charging, leaping over Airlia, he faced the beasts with wings outspread, his own fangs glinting sharply in the faint light. Eyes narrowed, he dared them to attack.
PostPosted: Sat Jul 26, 2008 9:14 am

Sweet....sweet nectar...it was all that Airlia could think, feel, and fathom at the moment. The world was immediately lost around her as the warm life liquid flowed steadily into her mouth and into her body. She felt more rejuvinated, more strong and of course more mentally intact. Dizziness lifting with the passing time she fed, the bloodlust fading slowly as she could tell somewhat the commotion around her when Cobalt's body soared over her own to shield her...but she had no will to look to see from what. She imagined the other Coyotes wern't too pleased with her attacking their pack leader.

However she was unprepared for the sudden backlash of her prey; snapping back into reality from being stunned by her bite. Picking his paws back they barely broke flesh as they found leverage against her legs his head snapping back away from her teeth and attaching its own jaws on the side of her neck. Immediately she let out a mixture of a painful yelp and a hiss of rage. How dare....HOW DARE THE BEAST! With anger and a temporary high from the blood she whirled her tail around in the blink of an eye and impaled him once more; ripping the creature from her neck before promptly mauling the wretched creature...stealing its life away from him swiftly. She wasn't thinking....wasn't in controll as after the deed had been done and the coyote took its last pained breath did the mare finally regain a bit of civil thought.

Immediately she was horrified that the maimed corpse of what...seemed to be a coyote before her and the blood littered all over herself and the surrounding area.

The remaining coyotes had tried to take a few snaps and nips at the stallion, determined to get to their leader before the deadly scuffle had broken out. It was only when they saw their leader had been killed that the two dispersed; fearing the same fate from the blue equine.

Shifting her weight to turn and look to Cobalt, the impending realization that she'd just maimed and killed the coyote sunk down upon her. Would he run now, seeing the monster? Given she'd been much worse to other prey...it wasn't often she had to kill like that; and even if he said he didn't judge or was disgusted by death...minds changed so fast. Shyly folding her wings around her body to hide the blood which dripped and stained her ivory pelt; she gazed out through her dark messy locks at the navy stallion.

"Thank.....you, Cobalt..." She flushed, feeling bad he had to go out of his way to protect her...it was a really poor move on her part to become so open for attack like that. Yet....she imagined he'd probably top it as 'thats what friends are for...'

Cobalt had little trouble fending off the coyotes. They were, after all, much smaller than himself. He did wonder why they were attempting to attack Airlia...at least, he did until he was finally able to turn around. Somehow, he had failed to see the third coyote before. Laying motionless on the ground, the coyote's wounds, and the blood scattered on Airlia's coat, told the tale of what had occurred.

He knew now that bloodlust was something terrible indeed. It could drive someone into being a killer, drive them deeper into the darkness than they could ever imagine. Suppressing shivers, he tried not to look at the blood, but for some reason, he couldn't tear his gaze away.

And Airlia...suddenly shy and...ashamed? Or was it fear he saw in her eyes?

Regardless, he didn't have much time to reflect on her emotions, or even respond to her words. The smell of blood was in the air, and Cobalt was beginning to feel a bit dizzy. His heart pounding, he suddenly felt a squeeze inside his chest, a new sort of feeling that he had never experienced before. The last thing Cobalt remembered was the strange, unfamiliar metallic taste of blood, and then he fainted dead away, collapsing in a heap, his wings sweeping forward to cover his sweat-streaked face.

His stare was cruel, already the devilish mare could feel her heart pick up its pace under the gaze. She could see it in his eyes quite easily, that uncertianty, that natural horror which most aquired when death was present. All she knew was that she shouldn't have let him come with her, see what her life required...Airlia was a murderer and reaper; there was no way to change it as long as she continued to live.

She should leave...let him get on with his semi normal existance. A friendship with her was like a friendship with death; there couldn't be one without the other and it seemed her newfound friend just couldn't take it.

...too bad it was literal.

Her breath held as suddenly the navy stallion's pupils shrunk dramatically; and before she could even exhale he'd fell to the ground in a heaped mess. Frankly, Airlia stood a bit dumbfounded; eyes staring placidly for a moment as it almost didn't even register that he fainted. She'd never actually seen anyone faint...let alone a stallion! Staring for a few moments, she raised her brow before something new began to set on her; her own chest clenching uncomfortably. With heart pounding, the mare felt as if she was having an anxiety attack....but she remembered when her father tried to teach her and Gabriel about emotions...it was called panic. Was he okay? Would he wake up? She didn't know, and the mare hated not being in controll.

Swiftly striding the few steps to his side, she used her horn to push away his wings from his face before using her nose to make sure they were far enough not to slide back. "Cobalt....Wake up damnit! " She hissed; very uncomfortable with the situation as she nosed his cheeks and snout to try and rouse him from his fainted spell. Was she worried? Well....yes! She'd never actually had anyone to worry over; her family was strong and without friends she was left fending for herself. The mare began to realize that friends were perhaps something you had to worry about; yet she wasn't too sure she liked all this paniced worry....especially when she was the one to cause the event leading to her worry.

She'd have to leave after he awoke...the mare figured he'd merely faint again at the sight of her monsterous appearance. Closing her wings tighter around her chest; she hid her shame from his sight...she only hoped he'd be okay.

Thump...thump...thump...

His heart thudded in his chest as he slowly regained consciousness. What was the matter with him? He had never fainted before, and it worried him immensely. Was he sick? Why had he fainted? And that taste...the taste of blood lingered in his mouth. Cracking open his eyes, his heart caught as a red haze washed over his vision. Fearing that he would black out yet again, he struggled to move even the slightest. His legs felt like blocks of wood as he rolled onto his knees, the limit of his movement at the moment.

"Airlia?" He rasped, trying to focus his hazy vision on the red, black, and white blur he assumed was his friend. He wondered if she blamed herself for his spell. It wasn't anything she did...surely not. True, Cobalt had never been so close to death before, but that wouldn't trigger a blackout. Or would it? If he had been more conscious, he would have debated that matter. As it were, he left it for another time. What mattered now was not what caused the episode. It was making sure she knew that it wasn't her fault. "Airlia," He repeated, "Don't blame yourself for this...I won't say I'm not unnerved by all this...but I don't think harshly of you for it. After all...it's your nature...you can't help it." He paused, breathing raggedly for a moment. "I don't fault you for it, because I know you're more than just your bloodlust." Why did his heart jump when he mentioned blood? It was all too confusing.

The only good thing about the whole situation was that his vision was finally clearing. Slowly, the haze crept out of his eyes, allowing him to finally focus on Airlia's face. Which wore a mask of worry. Guilt washed over him in waves. She shouldn't have to worry over him like that. Nobody should, but especially not her. She had enough worries and cares as it were.

Still slightly woozy from his faint, he pulled his wings back onto his back, folding them properly, wondering if the unusual taste of blood, which Airlia was all too familiar with, would coat his tongue forever. It was odd, because he had not in memory ever tasted blood, yet he knew immediately what it tasted like. Another mystery. That was all he was, it seemed. One big mystery. Perhaps if his parents had stuck around, if he had been taught exactly who and what he was...

Then, even if no one else understood, he would know why he was the way he was. And perhaps he would have an explanation for the pinkish haze that still lingered on his vision, or the strong taste of blood in his mouth.

Slowly that clenched feeling in her chest began to relax as the stallion began to come around; his voice filling the air and his eyes slowly opening. Damn that b*****d, making her feel these...these things! Needless to say though she was relieved that he was going to be okay, although like the stallion she too was curious to the reasonings to his fainting spell. Heaven knew what could have caused him to react that way; it just didn't seem normal even though she'd known him for such a limited time.

Ha. Not her fault....at least he was trying to be sweet about the matter. He seemed so keen on getting the point across that she wasn't to blame yet could he really see it in her perspective and actually believe such an outlandish statement? She killed; he saw, he fainted. It was pretty black and white in her eyes....although perhaps she too deep down wished it was so. Was she really not to blame for it all? True - it wasn't she who picked to be forced to kill for blood...but she did have a choice in the matter. It was just slightly unfortunate that death was the other option and as of now; she was too selfish to give up her life; scared of the great beyond.

Shaking her head slowly as he became more alert and responsive, Airlia turned her head away slightly as her long locks kept her eyes from view. "A murderer is still a reaper of life no matter how you look at it, Cobalt. I may not have chosen this lifestyle, but there are certianly options I could take...I just refuse to. I am still at fault...." It was a bitter reality like the taste he currently had on his tongue, it was just something you had to get used to.

Wait...what was this?

Blinking once, then twice...the mare was alarmed when something warm tickled her cheeks. Folding her wings forwards to sweep across her face she was a bit shocked to see the teardrops glittering on her feathers. She was crying? Why the hell was she anyways....damned emotions - she just didn't understand them.

Immediately turning her whole body away from the stallion, the last thing she wanted him to see was the tears from her dark orbs. Taking the time to snag the carcass of the wolf and dispose of it out of sight; the dark mare laid down at the edge of the clearing, her wings folding back around to conceal her blood stained pelt as her tail curled tightly around her legs like a hug. They were friends, sure....but even she had her limits on things; even her family hadn't gotten close to her emotionally wise.

"Take your time, im in no hurry. Regain your nerves, i'll wait here incase those coyotes come back..." It was the least she could do for him...since he'd in essence done the same in the first place to protect her. She wouldn't let those beasts get to him when he was vulnerable!

His head snapped around to look her square in the eyes. "Options?!" He rasped, his mind quickly fastening to what she was implying. "The other option is death, isn't it!" A burning anger coursed through him. Why did she have to suffer like this? It wasn't her fault she was born this way. Not even bothering to hide his fangs, not like it mattered anyway around her, his mouth dropped open in disbelief. Surely she couldn't fault herself for not taking her own life.

And then...then the first tears started, and she turned away. A sudden desire to wipe away her tears, to spirit away all of her pain, flooded Cobalt's heart. But he felt an invisible wall go up, her own "shield" of sorts, an attempt to block him out. He wondered what she was so afraid of. Most likely the same thing he had been afraid of for so long.

Scaring off someone else, facing their rejection, feeling the loneliness again.

Either that, or she genuinely thought he had fainted because of her.

But that was most definitely not the case. He knew it hadn't been anything she had done. He hadn't been repulsed by the act, and he still wasn't. It was necessary for her, he understood that, and he truly didn't fault her for it. He only wished he could convince her that he wasn't angry or repulsed with her...that he, even if no one else ever had, didn't regard her as a monster.

He suppressed a shudder as the carcass dripped blood on the ground, the few remaining drops left in it's battered body. His eyes involuntarily followed the red, sticky liquid, and he tore them away with difficulty, curling into a tighter ball as yet another wave of red washed over his vision.

As the red faded to pink, then faded away entirely, he had a flickering thought. Did the blood cause his fainting spell? Immediately writing that off as nonsense, he tried to bury that thought in the back of his mind. Yet, a nagging knowledge bothered him, that he was indeed half-Kalona...yet failed to possess any mental or emotional Kalona traits. It was something to think about, at the very least.

While he was thinking, Airlia had moved to the edge of the clearing. Looking at her, her wings pulled close to her body, he read the sadness and tension in the set of her body. Moving closer to her, his legs moving slowly, as if they were made of lead, aftereffects of his faint, no doubt, he rearranged himself as close to her as he believed she would allow. Peering into her eyes, the ones that others would fear to glance upon, he offered her a small smile, and a whispered plea. "Don't shut me out...my friend."

Perhaps she would raise that invisible wall even higher, Cobalt didn't know. All he knew was that he wanted to know her, more than he had wanted to know anyone. In one breath, she was both similar and dissimilar to him, bearing her own set of burdens, but sharing the same pain. Adding to that was the persistent desire to help her relieve that pain, with no regard to his own. In this moment, he wanted to be there for her, no matter what happened, or if he had to endure a thousand fainting spells.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 25, 2008 6:57 pm

A bit suprised by his sudden outburst, Airlia tried not to look back at the stallion; instead flinching at his words. He said it like it was a horrible thing...surely there were many out there who'd aggree whole heartedly to have one less monster in the world to worry about.

However, she couldn't answer him. Well, she could...but Airlia didn't want to; more or less she'd rather gouge her own eyes out than look him face to face and tell him yes. Yes that she meant killing herself to get away from this curse. He did have his own pains, she wouldn't deny that....but there were days where a lifetime of untormented sleep seemed so good to pass up any longer. A dreamless sleep were she would be at peace, not having to worry about where her next prey was, when she would break down and trying to get through each long day alone. The ivory mare was suprised she lasted this long, although the pride of her father did run through her veins.

Yet he just didn't know...nobody knew. She wouldn't let anyone in that close.

Closing her eyes and taking a breath to calm herself; the notion went in vain as she tensed further, feeling the stallion move closer to a fairly near proximity. She resisted she urge to lash out, he was her friend and wouldn't attack her like any other creature. Trying to turn her head away further, it was again an unsuccessful attempt as he'd caught her eyes and instead of reading a negative emotion....he smiled. His plea was something she'd never heard, and didn't expect to hear again. Someone was actually begging her to be near; to not leave....to stay. She couldn't believe it...believe him. Why....why....

That was when her own body began to shake; small at first but soon escalading into a full on tremor. Her perfectly constructed wall that had kept even her family out was breaking, the dark feathered wings protruding from her skull folding down to cover her teary eyes as her body instinctively crawled closer to the stallion. His warmth was ever so inviting that she soaked in every moment to it even as she lay her head down on his forelegs; her shaking chest heaving every so often with a ragged sob.

"I....have..to!" Airlia cried, "Its better...this way. There are days....thats all I want. N-not to wake....to be free......the strength...to go on; it doesn't...last forever in a world not made for creatures like me." He still had hope...he didn't look as scary, didn't need blood...there were those that could accept him!

Other than those willing to eat her that could tolerate her quirks, what did she have? Nothing. Its how it was; and would be.

For a terrible moment, he believed she would pull away from him yet again. That perhaps her wall was going to keep him out as well.

But then the wall shattered, and she was warm against his side, her body shuddering with her sobs. A warm emotion spread through his body, one of hope, which had an unfamiliar edge to it that he couldn't place. Instinctively, protectively, he swept a wing over her trembling body, holding her tight. She felt almost as if she could crumble in his arms. Which, of course, only made him want to hold her even closer.

"You have to?" His voice soft and pleading, rose over her weeping. "You're right, this world wasn't made for creatures like us. And it's true that strength of an individual won't last forever...it's easier to give up and allow yourself to believe that you have no place in this world, surrender to your doubts." Cobalt sighed, leaning closer to her, hoping he could get her to understand. "But it doesn't have to be like that. Borrow my strength. Stand with me. You don't have to be alone anymore, you don't have to face the world by yourself. And perhaps if the world wasn't created for us, we can create our own world, just you and me, and whoever else we want to be in it." He offered her another smile, and finished his speech, praying that she would choose life over death.

"You are worth more than you give yourself credit for...you have already proven yourself strong, brave, beautiful...you have every right to stay in this world, just as I do. You don't have to die, Airlia."

Cobalt didn't know what the future held, but he had made a connection with Airlia, and he was not worried about entwining their destinies. After all, she had become dear to him...even though he'd only known her a few short hours. He could stay with her, he could show her that life, even a life such as "monsters" could have, was worth living for.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 29, 2008 3:06 am

Cobalt's embrace was gentle, warm...kind. Part of the mare cursed at her weakness to crave such a dependance towards others; their simple touch. Meanwhile a part of her soared, elated in such a rare tender moment for her...it had been so long since she'd felt this kind of warmth. It all reminded her of the loving embraces parents gave their foals, so full of innocence and purity that one couldn't help but swoon. Well, it was the same...there wasn't anything wrong with this moment and she'd be damned if her emotions ruined it.

"I feel like I should....if my own family doesn't want me, who does? Certianly not the normals, it is hard for them to understand what they do not know." Halfbreeds? Ha...most were still of the normal and pure side of the spectrum to care about their fellow hybrids; and the more sinister ones didn't even appear to have a soul. There was very limited options in the world.

Yet she did have one....she had him, her first and only friend.

Biting back her tears and sobs in order to listen, her eyes trailed up to his own; almost thankful for her strange red on black orbs so bloodshot eyes were never a problem. He would give her strength, stand by her? Was he mental?

"Wh....what..." She breathed, obviously complexed by this. "You wish for me...to stand by you. Why do you wish to do these things...for me. You don't seem to have anything big to gain from it all; other than myself. Is this something friends have to do?" Perhaps it was one of those clauses to fufill after becoming friends...otherwise, did he not have anything better to do than to hang around her?

Perhaps he didn't realize how much of a daunting task she really was; especially when the time came that she'd break down. God, she hoped he'd never have to see that day.

To his final comment, her pale cheeks stained an unusual crimson red, highlighting her other ruby features quite nicely. With a gentle sniffle as she felt the urge to sob slowly dwindle out of her system, the mare almost bashfully looked away as she did come to realize just how intimate this moment really was with their close proximity. It was something she'd expect to see happen to anyone but her. Compliments and kindness were afterall foreign to her, yet she figured if she just kept her mouth shut she'd not offend him for his kind words about her.

Instead, she nodded; quietly speaking out so that only he would be able to hear. "I...suppose. I would not be a good friend if I did, would I?"

She shouldn't have to bear this much pain. Cobalt hugged her close as she said that her own family didn't want her. He supposed that having a family like that would be worse than having no family at all. He wanted to answer her, to say that he wanted her, even if they didn't, but he felt like it wasn't his place.

Cobalt smiled, and said, "I don't think you understand, Airlia." He realized it now. She thought there was a set of criteria for friendship. "Friends don't have to do things for each other. They do them because they want to." He thought for a moment, then added, "And as to why I want to do this for you...it's because I think you are more than just your breed. It is my hope, my prayer, that us of mixed blood are more than just outcasts. That, somewhere, we have our own place in this world." He sighed softly, a bittersweet smile on his face. "And if you can believe it, I do care about you. You are my friend, and I want to help you simply because of that."

The truth was, Cobalt firmly believed that if she could make it, then he could too. He truly believed that there was a place for them somewhere. And she was the first one of mixed blood that didn't judge him. He could truly be himself around her, without fear. That alone was enough to keep him around, even without adding in his growing friendship with Airlia.

Cobalt was relatively unconcerned by the somewhat intimate situation he was in. He was concerned mostly about Airlia, and making sure she was alright. Ever the gentleman, his main focus was on her, although the blush that colored her ivory cheeks sent a red-hot warmth through his veins.

"I don't know about that. I'm not entirely sure what makes a 'good' friend, though I know that it would make me very sad if you did. Personally, I'd rather you stay with me...or let me stay with you, whichever you prefer." Smiling at her, something he found himself doing more and more, he wondered if she would allow him to stay with her. He knew she had implied before, that a friendship with her was not the smartest thing he could do, but he no longer cared about being smart.

Here she was, falling apart in his arms, and he found that all he wanted was to show her that life could be different from what she had experienced. For some inexplicable reason, he wanted to stay with her, despite her warnings. He wanted to see if he could give her a reason to smile.
