spuntino Nookie Monster Amanikitty Nookie Monster Why are bloomers different? o_O Not trying to sound like a smart-a**, I'm really just curious... sweatdrop Both are "undergarments", right? -C'est la lune qui conduit la danse...-
Petticoats absolutely does not look right when they stick out. It's like having a nice black formal dress on and having the cheap white slip sticking out from the bottom of the dress.
The main purpose of bloomers are used to keep yourself from getting "panty shots" if air every by chance blows your skirt in that way. And unlike petticoats, bloomers are decorated with lace and are usually (or should be, for comfort) some kind of cotton material. They're kind of like what socks would be for shoes, except with a dress. Comfort and protection, with the optional appeal. And sometimes the 'end' of the bloomers look a good to some lolis if it sticks out (sometimes that might happen inevitably, if the skirt length of the dress/skirt is an inch or two short of the usually knee-length), but just like the skirt v.s. the knees/leg, if too much of it is showing, it looks kind of ridiculous and scandalous.
-...quand le soleil sera couché dans ton âme froide.- Sure, but some petticoats are amazingly detailed and just as pretty as bloomers. Indeed, but most are just tulle or gathered organdy, which doesn't really add anything to the hem treatment. Maybe if it were one of those really intricate vintage petticoats with the awesome lace trims, or if it matches up with the outfit particularly well, but most of the time, no.
As for the ero-lolita comment...that's really only in photoshoots. If you walked out in public wearing nothing but a petticoat and bloomers, you're going to look awfully underdressed. o_O;;
I figured that as a rule of thumb, no petticoats. I just wanted to see how you all felt about exceptionally made petticoats and if that rule was at all bendable. 3nodding

I just wanted to see how you all felt about exceptionally made petticoats and if that rule was at all bendable. 3nodding All rules can be bent within reason, to be honest. Generally, when a newcomer to the style asks this question, though, they receive a flat "no" to keep them from looking silly while experimenting. Western lolitas are notoriously bitchy. ^^;
A lot of Japanese street fashions will wear nothing but leggings and petticoats layered together instead of skirts [ie: decora and other random kids out there], but lolita's a bit iffier. Most of the time, the focus is on the outerwear, so having a petticoat peek is either distracting, or lazy.
Some cases [very rarely], it works, especially if there's a lot of nice detail on the hems of the petticoat that make it look more like an underskirt than underwear. I hope that makes sense?

Well, I don't personally think it's very proper, it's like showing your underpants I suppose...But whatever yu like best!~
I also found a website called "The Lolita Handbook" that gave a list of Do's and Don'ts. Here it is: http://lolita-handbook.livejournal.com/1696.html#cutid1
I hope it helps answer any other questions you have! :3

Usually, no. But sometimes it works. It depends on the petticoat. I have one that has a pretty black lace-type lining along the bottom that's meant to be shown. I love the look, but I do have to be careful not to let the white peek out over the black.

 It depends on the petticoat actually.
I think those with pretty lace sewn on its hem would be okay to show. In fact, I think it would look pretty and would add more detail to what you're wearing. However, those would usually cost more.
If it's those normal kind... It would look pretty weird if it was sticking out. In fact, it would be pretty distracting and it would really look as if your skirt is too short.

Nuclear Jelly Beans spuntino An accidental peek is okay, but showing a petticoat on purpose seems kind of tacky to me. Like wearing a thong so it shows at the waistband of your jeans, but not quite so slutty. o_o;
I agree, but there are some styles that do show thier petticoat sometimes, like Punk Loli. I've seen it many a time in them, and I think it's cute. whee
i agree. it all depends on the style...some styles its cute and ok to show the petticoat, other styles no... 3nodding

My opinion: No no no no!
Petticoats are not showable! I personally think it looks terrible! 1k to someone who finds a picture of it looking presentable.
I recently went to a con and I saw this girl in the cutest pink skirt and white blouse but - gasp! - she had a on BLACK PETTICOAT that peeked out an inch or two. It was devastating!
