Dib searched his pockets again. This time he pulled out a five dollar bill. "Oh man, this was supposed to be for emergencies. I geuss this is a good a time as any." Dib half walked, half limped to Gold Tavern. He knew he'd be able to afford something over there.

At the door to the tavern he noticed that it was unusually busy. Maybe it was a special occassion. He said hi to some of the people that he knew and sat down at a table by himself. If it had been any other day he would have enjoyed the crowded resturaunt but today all he wanted to do was get his food.

Clif tore into his pretzel unceremoniously, chewing slowly as if savoring every bite. If he didn't scrape together enough teeth, there was no telling when the next meal would be, so he was making every bite count.
He glanced about the tavern, taking in the sights and the sounds, when he saw a man with an interesting scar under his eye sit down at a near-by table. Clif slowly rose to his feet, focusing in on the man's face, then smiled and walked over to him.
"You're Dib, right? You probably don't remember me, but I'm Clif Bartleby. I saw you down at the shelter on East and Grey St. a while back. You do some pretty good works for them."

At the sound of the door opening, Jasper turned to see Lila, one of the chef's, walking through. They had met once before, when Lila had come to her bar to pick up an order of liquors. Jasper thought she was a very friendly girl, and very... enthusiastic about chocolate.

Jasper smiled to herself as she saw Lila offering chocolate to a man who had recently walked in, who was covered in the stench of blood. She had never talked to the man before, but had seen him once or twice at hunter's checkpoints.

'Never one to be anti-social,' Jasper thought as she finished up her soup and quietly requested another cup of blood. She never talked openly about her being a vampire, but only would admit to it if someone asked. It seemed a little harder tonight to order blood, mainly because it was unusually crowded tonight, so close to closing time.

Jasper surveyed everyone who was in here. Lila and the bloody man, a homeless teenager having walked in moments ago, another hunter whom she had only seen at a checkpoint, and a musician/mage.

'Interesting group of people,' Jasper thought as she sipped on the cup of blood in front of her.

Dib looked to see who it was that was speaking to him. Seeing who it was, he forgot about his hunger pains. "Clif! Hey, of course I remember you. You saved me from that crazy shadow. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be standing hear today."

Dib remembered the cold night about a year ago when he was supposed to be helping deliver some food stamps to the homeless center. Clif was also helping out. They instantly became friends in that short of time. Everything was going as planned when out of nowhere, a shadow jump on Dib. Quickly, Clif pulled out his gun and shot it between the eyes. Dib would have died if Clif wasn't there.

"Gosh, It's been so long. I didn't think I'd see you again. What have you been up to? You still hunting the shadows?" Dib laughed, remembering how fun that night was, despite being attacked by a shadow.

"Yeah, I'm about to go out and do some hunting right now. I'm suprised you remember me, though. It seems like you would get to know alot of people with all the charity you do." Clif said, turning a seat around and sitting in it. He took another chunk out of his pretzel and chewed it quickly before continuing what he was saying. "So, still doing the good work?"
Clif had always been impressed by people like Dib who dedicate portions of their lives to the less fortunate. He'd even tried it out a few times himself, which was how he'd met Dib in the first place. Knowing that people like that existed gave Clif a little bit of hope for this town trapped in endless darkness.

"Oh, I remember everyone I meet, especially ones that saved my life." Ironicly, Dib didn't think that Clif would remember him. After all Dib was just some poor street boy. In a way, Dib looked up to Clif.

"And yea. I still help them out every chance I can. I'd want someone to help me if I were in need of it. Plus, it keeps me busy and I meet a bunch of nice..." Dib grabbed his stomach and fooced a laugh. His hunger pains were back. "Ah! wheres the waitress."

As if on que, the waitress came to the table. He politely told her he wanted a salad with extra onions and crutons. "Sorry about that, Clif. I am REALLY hungry."

"Don't worry, I understand!" Clif said as he finished his pretzel. He tried not to think about how good that salad sounded, and he reminded himself that he would be able to afford something a little more filling later on.
"So, how's everyone at the shelter doing? Is that Walter guy still..." At the silence, Clif mimed a few dancing motions before he laughed a little. Walter had been one of the few characters he had encountered when helping Dib. He was a bit of a crazy old man, but he had a good heart. He also liked to think he could dance.

Alexander stared.

His icy blue gaze was fixed on someone he believed may very well be crazy, offering chocolate cheerfully to some stranger. A stranger with weapons strapped across his back, no less. What was she, nuts?

". . . thank you, but no." He was trying to fathom a polite way to decline the food when his order arrived, and he paid with the bounty he'd collected before turning back to the other person. "My apologies, but I'm not much for chocolate before a meal." He picked up the small loaf of bread and tore it into good-size chunks, some for dipping into his soup and some ending up with a light coating of butter before he set them back onto his plate.

I must look like hell. I feel like hell. Verrick is going to be angry that I didn't just come home. Why didn't I just go home? I didn't feel like it. I needed a rest. Those shadows took forever to get rid of, especially after I started bleeding...

He ran a hand through his hair in one of his nervous habits, straightening the minor tangles in the thick mane as he looked around himself. There was an odd assortment of people, he'd give them that. The Lord enjoyed watching them and how they interacted, though he didn't focus enough on the groups to really catch what they were saying. Alexander wondered how out of place he looked there, obviously a hunter, covered in shadow filth and grime, among the relatively clean people around him.

The red-haired male turned to his food, not wanting to let it get too cold, and began to eat what he'd paid for.

Jasper couldn't help but smile as he heard the conversation between the young boy and the hunter. She thought it was interesting how you can meet with old friends in the strangest of places.

'Small world,' She thought. Sighing, she finished her glass of blood and pulled a notebook out from the pocket of her jacket. This was her notebook of wanted criminals in the City of Twilight who were still out there. Of course, on the very first page was the one man who killed her family, who's name was still unknown to her. She turned a couple pages to a victim she had recently taken care of, and crossed his name out. Then she returned the notebook to its pocket.

Looking around again, Jasper saw that the man who was offered chocolate by Lila had turned down the offer politely. He then was looking around at the people in the Gold Tavern, as she had done before. When he looked in her direction, her copper eyes met with his icy blue ones for a brief moment. Then she looked away.

"That crazy old man is alive as ever. Everytime I go over there, He's either dancing with one of the poor old ladies or trying to get me to dance with him. And I can never turn down Walter. Yea, He is some charecter!" Dib started laughing real loud to point where his eyes were teary.
The truth was, the homless center was filled with characters like Walter. That was another reason why he liked helping the homeless center. Dib met some of the nicest people in the world in that homeless center. He felt so bad for them. He just had to help.

Clif glanced down at his watch. It was a worn out watch that had obviously used to be gold, but had become heavily tarnished due to the wear and tear of Clif's work. There was a little seal on it that identified it as one of the little paraphanilia you could choose to set your license in as a hunter. The blue curves and crimson bars of the hunter's seal were just barely visible under the intense scratching on the metal.
It was a little after 10 by now, and Clif had done a few calculations as to how long he should stay inside the Golden Tavern.
"Well, judging by the cloud cover I saw earlier today, I think I better be heading over to the old automotive district now." He said, standing up and pushing his chair back in the right way. "There should be plenty of Shadows lurking in those abandoned warehouses by the time I get there." He wiped his hand off with a dingy looking handkerchief that he pulled out of his pocket, then held his hand out to Dib.
"Nice seeing you again, though."

Dib reached out and shook Clif's hand. "It's nice to see you again too. Maybe we'll meet again someday in this strange city." But for some reason, Dib knew he would see his friend again.
Just as Clif was leaving, the waitress was finally coming with his salad. "Mrs.Mary told me it's on the house, little guy." Dib looked up in suprise. "Oh... well then here, take this. It's your tip." She smiled and thanked him. "No big deal."
He sat back and slowly ate his salad when he saw a man with a bleeding gash. Dib saw this man before but he didn't know where. "Strange city..." Dib laughed and finished his salad.

The bewildered little mage stared around him at the people filling the tavern, his skinny form shivering in his effeminate clothes. He really wasn't one for crowds or the excessive presence of strangers, unless he was performing. And this certainly wasn't a performance. After all, he was cowered in his seat, barely able to speak up to the nice-looking woman who asked him what he wanted. He managed to tell her he'd like a hot chocolate, but he realized afterward he may have jumbled the syllables or even said it in German. Who knew, anymore? She seemed to know what he'd said, though, and that was what mattered... right?

He ran a hand through a loose strand of blond that framed his face before pulling his long braid in front of him, fidgeting with it nervously. The injured male covered in shadow gunk raised his curiosity for a moment, almost enough to inspire him to make conversation, but another girl sidled in beside his interest before he had time to conjure up the proper courage. Damn...

"Oh, why must I do this to myself...?" he murmured, staring at the braid he was holding as if it could answer. "I'm a silly, silly boy..."

Clif stepped out of the Golden Tavern and onto the streets. Looking up, he saw it was just as cloudy as he had expected it to be, if not more. He let out a low whistle as he began to walk southward, through the winding alleys, toward the old car factories about two miles away. As he walked, he flipped his last remaining coin in the air, then began to spin it over his knuckles, to keep himself occupied. It was a long walk to the auto buildings.
