The woman opened her eyes. The room she was in was dark, lit only with tall candles set in iron castings upon the walls. In the middle of the room was a desk with a straight-backed chair pulled to its side. She could tell it was antique with a mere glance. She felt that she was lying on a very comfortable couch, and when she looked down that suspicion was confirmed. It was the color of blood. She also saw that she was wearing a blue dress, which she had most definitely not been wearing before. Before? What had she been doing before? She had been at home sleeping. Her husband lay beside her, his arm tossed around her shoulder. A noise had woken her up. She had opened her eyes and looked around, but saw only her open window. Her husband’s light breath touched her ear. Perhaps it was that which had disturbed her. But no, there had been a voice. Yes, she remembered it now. A man’s voice that she did not recognize. It had called to her, said ‘Shayla, wake up,’ and she had listened… “Ah, Shayla, I see you are awake.” The woman was startled out of her revere. She sat up and looked around. There was a window across the room that overlooked the dusty city bellow. Through it she could see that the sun was just rising over the horizon, bringing with it a burst of light to push out the darkness. The light suddenly filtered in through the pane of glass, dispelling the shadows of the room. What was left was a tall, thin man with white hair that fell across his startling eyes. He was smiling, but it was not a gentle smile. He looked something like a child that had just gotten a new, very shiny toy to play with, which he had every intent of breaking. “Don’t look so startled dear; it really does nothing for your face.” She made an attempt to get up and run, but the man was across the room before she could so much as take a step. He shoved her back onto the couch and loomed over her, his hand going to her chin. His fingers felt like icy knives as they traced along her jaw. Then there was a slight pressure. A trickle of hot blood made its way slowly down to the nape of her neck. The man breathed deeply, closing his eyes. When he opened them again they were glazed over, the startling gold reduced to a shining, mottled yellow. The woman gasped and froze in terror and for a moment the man’s eyes returned to normal. He looked…disappointed she realized with a sick feeling in her stomach. “You know,” he said in a cool voice, a slight smirk playing at the end of his lips, “It’s much more fun when you scream.”
***
Alec sat at his desk idly drumbing his fingers against the cool wood. He was interupted by a knock at his door. "Come in." A man dressed in a suit peaked his head through the door. "All done with lunch sir?" Alec smiled and nodded. "Yes, it was a little bland, but it will hold me off until tomorrow. You can take away the leftovers now." The servant nodded and walked in, picking up the body from the floor and carrying it out the door without another word.

Logan’s first thoughts were the same almost every morning. “I have to find the Cure,” and “I have to make breakfast.” He had been working towards that first one for most of his life, and as for the second, well...the eggs were about to burn. “Oh hell,” Logan muttered beneath his breath as he attacked the heap of sunny-side-up eggs with a spatula. With his other hand he whisked together butter, chopped herbs, and eggs for a topping to breakfast Polenta. He pushed the finished eggs to the side with a plate of pancakes and took the spatula to a pan spilling over with strips of meat. After pouring butter over that he reduced the heat and let it simmer, moving over to the refrigerator to pull out a platter of fruit that he had diced earlier. Most of the people in the warehouse didn’t much care for fruit, but diseased or not it he felt it was required for a healthy diet and served it anyway. The finished product of Logan’s morning toil was a rickety table piled with food. It meant two things: One, that Logan had gone shopping at some odd hour of the morning, and two, that he was either in a really good mood, or a really, really bad one. He sat at the table and started eating, looking for the entire world like he didn’t make the food and had no idea how it got there.

Alaric tromped up to the door, trying to remove some of the mud from his boots. Not that it really mattered since the warehouse was dirty anyway, but old habits are hard to break. Walking into the dining area he was faced with overcoming another old habit, and that was killing the dog seated at the table. Unfortunately, that dog was his current benefactor, as much as it irked him. He contented himself with avoiding conversation and heading straight to his room, if you could call it that. He tossed off his jacket and propped his precious sword in the corner of the room.
Letting himself fall into the lumpy bed he contemplated his most recent night of fruitless search. It seemed all his leads were drying up. It was frustrating. And what was more, he was cooped up in a warehouse full of turned. Only one true-born in the whole bunch! He sighed, slipping his boots off and assuming a semi-comfortable position in preparation for sleep. At least he didn't have a window.

Jess was sitting on the window-sill, just as she seemed to do every morning lately, with her left leg swinging. She rested her head back on the wall and watched the sun slowly rising. It seemed to be taunting her even more so than usual, so she turned her attention to the swaying of the trees. "Damn sun...*sigh* Logan will want to try to find the Cure once again today...," she thought to herself. Not too long after, she fell into a flashback, her first in many years..
::Flashback:: "What are you talking about Chris? Our daughter is going to love you very much and you know it..stop being silly." she laughed and grabbed his hand as they walked through the park. He smiled at her, lovingly, and replied, "I suppose your right. Can you believe you're already 7 months through? TWO MORE MONTHS and we'll be parents!!" He smiled wildly and full of excitement. Jess nodded and kept walking, she would never admit to being terrified. Just then a strange man approached her and Chris and looked very angry. Chris pushed Jess behind him and said, "I'm sorry..can I help you?" The man leaped on Chris and she did what she could to stop the attacker, but he threw her back hard. In the process he ripped out her fiance's throat. "NO! CHRIS!" she screamed, tears screaming down her face. The cops saw, but didn't want to get involved. The man then leaped on Jess, biting her throat. When she woke up, she found she had bite marks on her throat, and knew she was one of them, she looked down at her once white dress, it was covered in blood...she had a miscarriage. ::End Flashback::
A tear fell from Jess' eye and then someone touched her shoulder.

Jasper smelt food. He shot up and looked around, running a hand through his tousled black hair. His mouth split into a greedy smile at the sight of heaps of plates on that rusty tetanus breeding ground they called a table. Jasper rolled off of the couch he had been sleeping on and wandered over, not saying any words of thanks to Logan as he picked up a pancake and ate it plain. Enjoying it, he picked up three more and started to make his way back to the couch, perhaps to catch a few more hours of sleep, when he saw Jessica sitting at the window. Jasper raised an eyebrow and stopped. Her sitting at the window wasn’t odd (that was a habit of hers lately) but the tear rolling down her cheek was. He debated for a moment over whether or not he should say something, and the “I’m really tired” part of his mind almost won. Almost. Jasper sighed and walked over to her, shoving the second pancake into his mouth. He tapped her shoulder lightly. “Hey, you alright Jessic-” The girl jumped and looked at him like he was some monster out of a movie come to eat her brain. Jasper took a step back. “Whoa there, lady, chill.” The glazed look left her eyes and he smirked. “Welcome back.”

Jess jumped up, frightened and still not able to see clearly, and then she heard Jasper say, "Woah there, lady, chill."(just like him to say) She attempted a laugh, "Oh, Jasper, it..it's just you..I'm alright, don't worry." She stood up straight, she stillonly stood a little over his shoulders. She forced a smile and said, "I've told you many times that you can call me Jess. Anyway..if you'd like you can go back to your nap. I'm going to try to eat for once."
She walked over to the table and sat across from Logan. He stared at her, "..Another flashback?" She nodded and grabbed a plate and took a very small amount of eggs and pancakes, and just to amuse Logan some fruit. "They're getting worse, Logan, I saw the whole thing. I..I also had a dream about the Cure last night..if you're interested in hearing it." Then she have him a devious smirk and raised an eyebrow, waiting for his answer.

“We all dream about the Cure Jessica!” Jasper yelled, ignoring what she had told him about calling her Jess. He plopped back down on one of the couches and flicked on the TV. “Having no cable is really a bummer…” he muttered as he folded his hands behind his back and closed his eyes. “We should fix that.” Jasper sighed. Everything that was going on was all nice and distracting, but it wasn’t quite enough to keep his mind off of the fact that he hadn’t actually fed off of blood in more than two and half weeks. Sure, real food kept the stomach from growling, but it didn’t do him a lick of good when it came down to his thirst and the taunting smell of humans that made him feel drunk.
Logan ignored Jasper’s rambling and eyed Jess, hardly able to keep the excitement at bay. “A dream? Yeah, tell me about it. Anything is better than this…well, this nothing.” He folded his hands around a cup of tea and sipped from it, casting his glance above the rim so that he wouldn’t lose eye-contact with Jessica. He felt a little pang of pity and regret for having changed the subject so quickly, but anything about the Cure took over his mind so quickly it was hard to think about anything else.
Rosen’s eyes flickered open. She yawned and stretched her long legs over the side of the bunk bed. Light was already filtering in through the cracks in the boarded-up window next to her bed. Back when she was human she woke up long before the sun had itself risen, and when she was first Turned she had avoided light and had become nocturnal. But that was near impossible now with everyone up and buzzing around. Rosen had been here only a week and hadn’t had time to fully adjust, but she was making progress. She got up and went into the bathroom, emerging a few minutes later showered. The cold water had done her good, making her fully awake and aware. She walked over to the stairs and glanced over. A few of the Cursed had already woken up and were eating. After a moment’s hesitation Rosen descended and joined them, standing just a few feet away from where Logan and the other vampire, Jessica, had seated themselves. Rose hadn’t said a word to anyone since she had gotten here and she didn’t break that trend now, instead giving each of them a friendly nod. She glanced at the food but had no appetite for it, so she turned away and tried not to think about it again.

Jess mearly shook her head at Jasper's comment, what he didn't know is that her dreams were very rarely wrong. "Yes, a dream Logan." She caught the look in his eye, showing some regret for not asking more of the flashback, but she shook her head knowingly, "Don't worry about it Logan...anyway. I had a dream...you of all people know that they are rarely wrong.." she said then bringing her voice down to a very quiet whisper. "The Cure..is a young woman..not much older than most of the kids around here. She was in an old book store that I used to go to. If you'd like...I can show you were it is today...we can check it out."
Just then Rosen walked into the room, still being silent. Jess nodded back, trying to be friendly, and she couldn't help but feelign that she had seen her before...she some how knew her. "Why...why the hell do I know her?" she thought tensely, but not showing it in her face.

Logan’s cup of tea hit the table with a clank. He was staring down in it, looking but not truly seeing the ripples that rebounded as they hit the side of the chipped glass. “A bookstore?” he asked distantly. “She really does love to read. Her head is always in a book.” “I don’t blame her. Reality never was any fun.” “True!” A chuckle, and then a sigh. “I can’t help but be a little worried though. It’s….it’s the books about the Diseased that she really adores. But….it can’t hurt, right? It’s not like she is going to go look for them.” “No, it can’t hurt. And I wouldn’t let anything happen to her anyway, you know that.” Logan looked up from the tea. “Yeah, Its worth a shot. We can go in a little while. We would have the most chance of seeing someone in the afternoon…oh, sorry, will the sun be too much then? We can always go later tonight, or you can write the directions down…” “Are you seriously going to follow a dream Logan?” Jasper threw over his should without opening his eyes. “Man, you really are getting desperate.” “We can always make Jasper go,” Logan retaliated, throwing a glare at the vampire.

"-That makes me Craaaaazy?! Ah Dunno!"
Sky belted out the lyrics with unbridled abandon as the elevator dinged and the door swung to reveal his destination. The hall was quiet as usual, the thud of his boots against cold marble making echoing along the walls. He turned around the corner and nearly walked into the man making his way out from behind the door. Sky took one long look at his burden and whistled softly. "I take it that his highness has fed and burped and is right now rocking himself to sleep?"
His bland face folded ever so slightly around the lips but it was fleeting. Sky loved to crack jokes at their leader's expense, so much so that everyone believed stand up was his calling. Too bad not everyone could afford to laugh at them. His white teeth flashed and he gingerly reached out to shut the girl's eyes. "Poor thing, he could have been a gentler about it...don't you think?" Their eyes met for barely a fraction of a second but it was long enough for the lycan to read and understand. He shrugged and stepped back. "Don't let me hold you up. I got official business to deal with."
He stepped into the darkened room, pupils dilating to let in all possible light as his eyes glowed dull garnet. A quick glance to the left showed his target where he usually was; hunched over the table, back toward the door. It was just one of the many silent ways Alec conveyed two messages, depending on who was on the receiving end. It could mean the vampire was confident enough of his own power and strength to face whatever could come through the door...or he simply didn't count you worth the trouble of turning around. Or, in Sky's case, lunch did not agree with him.
"So she's still fighting you every peristaltic movement of the way."
The silver/white capped head barely shifted as he took a few steps forward. "By the way, we'll need to have one of those cabinet shake ups again...the caterers are beginning to have an opinion." Sky sighed dramatically and shook his head. "Too bad, I actually liked this bunch. I suppose I'll have to arrange four executions now...except if you'd care to lend a hand-"
"I don't suppose you have a particular reason for being here,"
A soft whisper, dangerously soft, and Sky hesitated. "Other than to gaze upon thine awe inspiring visage, and the fact that it's part of my paycheck? Um let me think about that- yeah...no...wait a minute I think- no. Oh yeah, just that we're got word on a nest in the vicinity and we're gearing up to check it out, never know what we can find out...as long as they remember to keep someone alive long enough. That and we've got to start making recruits you know?

Jess just laughed at Logan's reaction, "I've come to be quite used to the sun...I..I've had quite a few years to get used to the sun.." A faint sign of sadness showed in her voice and face, but it soon disappeared. "Anyway, no Jasper doesn't have to go, I'll be perfectly fine going with you in the afternoon, I just need to wear a hoodie, that's all. If you dont mind me borrowing one, that is."
She turned away and her eyes flickered, remember more of her dream. She saw the girl again, this time she was facing her, looking slightly relieved and frightened. They weren't there alone, someone else was there trying to get her too. "Logan...we're going to need back-up with us. We won't be the only ones there.."

“Hey there, don’t be so fast to exclude me now,” Jasper said as he lifted himself slowly from the couch and yawned. “I’ll go. Hell, we can make a field trip out of it. That is, as long as you think that’s alright, Logan.” He said the last sentence with a little mock bow and walked over to the table, planting his hands on it and looking from Jess to Logan. Logan raised an eyebrow and looked at Jasper. “I thought you weren’t going to grace us with your presence.” Jasper shrugged and sat heavily in the last remaining chair. “Eh, I’m bored. This will give me a chance to stretch my legs.” Logan sighed and shrugged. “Yeah, a field trip it is then. Anyone that wants to go can. Only a few people in the library though. The rest can keep watch outside; I can’t have us drawing to much attention to ourselves. If this is a real lead the last thing we need is Alec getting suspicious and sniffing us out.” He looked over at Jessica. “And don’t worry about the jacket. You can raid my box of clothes before we leave.” Rosen stepped forward and removed the empty plates and cup from the table. Jasper seemed to take notice of her for the first time. He smirked. “I like her already.” Logan looked over at Rose, his expression one of worry. He had been hoping that she would say a few words, anything at all, but besides their conversation when he asked her to join Logan hadn’t heard a thing. “Rosen, will you be joining us? It will be your first time out with the group.” He couldn’t help but feel like some worried mother pushing her kid towards another group of children at the park. Rose looked at him for a little while, then gave a little nod. “Alright,” she said breezily. Logan breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright,” he repeated. The whole time that she had been there Rosen had avoided looking at Jessica, but now their eyes met. It was only a brief second before she looked away again, but the message was clearer then if she would have said it aloud: I know you too.
