Shinoma scented the rabbit a fraction before Firestorm spotted it, her body tensing as her adrenaline kicked in. Anticipation was almost as good as the kill itself; almost.

'Quicker!' Shinoma hissed, watching in dismay as the rabbit bounded off. She knew from past experience that if they got a headstart they would soon outstrip a Soquili, the rabbit was lower to the ground, and they generally fed only a short distance from their boltholes.

It looked though, as Shinoma ran almost at Firestorm's heels, that this was a particularly foolish rabbit. It seemed to be dashing all over the place, and for a distance. Had it strayed further than it should have done?

'Get it!' she urged, in between her puffs for breath as they both chased the rabbit.

Firestorm had chased a lot of rabbits around the nursery grounds before - and some into the woods that encircled it before an adult called him back into vision. And Firestorm was fast, but more than that, he was on fire with this competition.

And the rabbit was running, going left, going right - but Shinoma might have detected that it was either foolish, or not taking this flight seriously enough. It had grown lazy in this land nearly devoid of predators. Its belly was wide, having gorged on the bountiful clover.

Firestorm drove himself harder and then sprung, his front hooves coming down right on the back legs of the rabbit with a hard SNAP - followed quickly thereafter with an earsplitting squee from the rabbit. Liquid black eyes looked up at the foal with an obvious look of betrayal. This was unexpected. It was wracked with obvious pain.

And Firestorm hesitated. His hooves were pressed down on its legs, and he did not let it up, but his fire seemed to drain from his eyes. This had been such a wonderful sounding idea when Shinoma had proposed it. It made sense - his herd was supposed to be so strong - wasn't strength prooved in combat? He swallowed, and looked to to Shinoma, his eyes asking for guidance. He needed her approval of this action that his stomach told him was wrong.

Fat little morsel Shinoma thought breathlessly, as she carried on pounding in Firestorm's wake. In a moment, if the colt didn't bag the rabbit she would, she could already feel the coppery taste in her mouth, and she urged him on in her head, and called out to him again;

'Grab it!'
And as she said it, he did so, the scream of pain from the rabbit sending a chill of pleasure down her small spine.

'Delicious.' she said, slowing and coming to a halt next to him.
'Really, I didn't expect you to get it, I was about to jump ahead and do it myself.' she grinned wickedly as Shinoma looked at her.

'What's wrong? Ohh..you don't know what to do now? Grab it by the throat with your mouth and squeeze hard. Throttle the life from it, you'll know when it's dead, it'll go limp. Go ahead..' she said, looking at him directly, challenging him to do the deed.

Firestorm quivered in momentary indecision and anticipation as the rabbit squealed beneath his hoof. A small voice whispered in the back of his head that at this point, a kill would be merciful. He seemed to snap back to reality when he heard Shinoma's coaxing voice behind him. If he stopped now, anyway, he'd prove her right. And be a weakling. Well. He couldn't very well have that.

He... just hadn't been taught how yet. He was sure Balrog would teach him this eventually. Balrog was big, strong, could be mean, and got his way. This wasn't wrong. His stomach was just squeamish and he needed to tell it to shut up.

"Of COURSE I got it!" He let the bravado of his voice encourage himself as much as backtalking Shinoma. "I TOLD you I could!" And he squinched down the questioning and then, pretending as if he knew how all along (but yet following Shinoma's instructions to the letter), he quickly (before he could talk himself out of it) bit the small rabbit's throat, clamped his jaws, and shook.

With a final heartwrenching squeal followed quickly by a POP sound, the rabbit hung limply in Firestorm's mouth. Almost instinctively, Firestorm dropped it, holding back a retch. This was normal. This was normal.

"There!" His tail flipped upwards again.

'Yeah well for a moment it looked like the fat thing was going to outrun you,' Shinoma sniped back, snickering. She'd have loved it if that were to have happened but you couldn't have it all.

'Well, you didn't need to shake so, just a squeeze would have done,' the filly said, watching as Firestorm killed the rabbit.
She'd let out a sigh when the rabbit gave out its death squeal, that was such a lovely noise. The rabbit's delicate neck snapping had made such a pretty sound as well.

'Yeah?' she snorted softly. What did he want? A pat on the back and a 'good boy'?

'Well don't mind me, enjoy the results of your successful hunt.' she urged, eyeing him sharply. If he ate it, that was the thing. Maybe if he did she might have some sort of grudging common feeling for him, despite him looking like a big bird.

Firestorm did not acknowledge her advise in how to properly kill the rabbit, although the information was tucked away in his mind. He really didn't want to seem like she was teaching him something, putting her at the advantage... even though she technically was. "Well. It worked." He sniffed.

He looked down at the still body again. It was still warm, and its glassy eyes stared lifelessly up at the colt. He swallowed. The deed was done now. He had killed it ... all by himself! He tried to spin it as a good thing again. After all, he had heard his father, Balrog, brag about killing cougars. So killing a rabbit couldn't be a bad thing. So what harm could come of tasting? After all, the raptors that his herd held in reverence killed and ate rabbits.

So, steeling himself, Firestorm bent down and with his blunt teeth, chomped at one of the legs. It took a moment, and a certain amount of pressure, before he could hear bone fracturing between his teeth. But that did not dislodge the limb. It was not until he planted his hooves on either side and pulled did the small leg finally tear free in a bloody spray. It was hot, coppery tasting. The fur felt weird in his mouth, and the taste was heavy, spongy. Not at all like the crisp, fresh grass or soft, sweet clover.

'I suppose, but as I said, you can kill them quicker, especially when you're hungry. And now you know how.' Shinoma said pointedly. She tilted her to one side, looking almost lovingly at the corpse on the ground. It was so pretty like that, all dead, and in the moment before you bit into the flesh you knew that you were feeding yourself with the lifes blood of not just another creature, but one you had felled yourself.

The filly's mouth watered terribly when Firestorm tore into the rabbit, and she'd been close enough for a few drops of blood to land on her nose. She rubbed it on her leg, and licked the blood from it, savouring the taste on her tongue.

'It's good isn't it?' she said, it wasn't so much of a question, because if he didn't like it she would probably chew him out..or even attack him and take the rabbit from Firestorm.

'Good' would have been the last word that Firestorm would have used to describe the ... "unique" flavor of the rabbit. It tasted wrong in his mouth. Too moist, but it wasn't water, it was something alltogether worse. His teeth pressed against the flesh that yielded to the force, and yet did not break apart into smaller pieces that would have made swallowing easier. Firestorm told himself that weaning was hard anyway - that grass after mother's milk wasn't quite the same for a time until he grew accustomed to it. And then he would never have gone back. Perhaps... perhaps this was like a second weaning - weaning to "real", adult foods. But then his mother and father he had seen grazing in the herdlands...

He swallowed it after smashing it about in his mouth, and it went down like a lump of phlegm. Just as sickly and unwholesome feeling. And still, the taste of blood clung in his mouth. However, Firestorm had an audience. And one that he refused to look weak in front of. He made a show of it all right, licking at his chops and flashing her a grin with bloodstained teeth. "Oh yeah!" He quipped. "Delicious!" He noticed her hungry look and nodded towards the rabbit. "Go ahead! There's plenty for two." He offered "graciously."

Shinoma watched the colt carefully, eyeing for any signs of daintiness or hesitation about eating. When he did offer her the rabbit, she took it without hesitation, wanting to eat more than she wanted to question his 'generosity'.
She ate hungrily, her teeth slicing strips of the cooling flesh from the small bones, skinning the area first, puffs of rabbit fur falling around her head as she worked.

When she'd had her fill, and at that point there wasn't much left anyway, she worked off one of the leg bones, and settled down with it, stripping away the clinging threads of meat, chewing into the marrow. She burped, and licking her mouth, stood, leaving the carcass.

'That's how you enjoy a rabbit.' she said, giving herself a shake.
'Well, thanks for the food, I'll be off.' she snickered. How nice of him to hunt for her.

Firestorm was more than thankful that Shinoma seemed hungry. He didn't know what he would do if she had expected him to finish the whole rabbit off on his own. After he knew what it tasted like, he couldn't help but feel vaguely nauseous as he watched her work. Maybe... maybe stripping off the furry skin helped the taste. That certainly had been a nasty part of it, but somehow, Firestorm wasn't convinced. Maybe... it was an acquired taste. But, as he watched her work, the flash of extended, sharpened teeth flashed in the light. His teeth were nothing like that. Those were teeth that could slice at the meat easily. She seemed to be made for that meal. Regardless, Firestorm watched in fascination. Perhaps morbid fascination, but fascination nonetheless. Shinoma was nothing like the other mares of his herd. It felt a little dangerous, but also a little exciting. He wouldn't tell Balrog about this - this was his secret. His decision to give her a pass into the herdlands.

He shook his head as she finished her bloody meal, snapping himself out of his reverie. "You certainly did." He agreed with her. An ear flicked back as she went to depart. "Guess it's time to run back home to mommy, huh?" He couldn't resist one more little quip. He wasn't scared of her even if she did have sharp teeth. It was him that caught the rabbit after all... Or at least that's what he was going to think to himself. "Maybe I'll catch you sniffing around my herdlands again sometime." He added airily with a grin.

Shinoma hiccuped as she stretched, uncurling her smoky tendrils as she even stretched to the point of her tail.

'Yes..I did.' she said, glancing at him with an unreadable expression on her face.
'Nope. It's time for me to head off and find some other bird-brained colt to tease. Or..' she grinned slyly, another idea popping into her head. She wouldn't actually carry it out, but it would be nice to make him think she would.

'Maybe I'll go find your mother. Let her know what a good little killer of a son she has. Y'know, on my way sort of thing.'

Firestorm scowled at Shinoma's confident remark on how much she enjoyed her meal. Had she seen through his facade? Or was she just testing him? No matter. He had still killed it, and he wasn't going to show his hand if she hadn't already guessed.

"Well good!" He retorted. "I'm sure she'd be proud I'm such a confident hunter. Course, she doesn't need some whispy little filly to tell her THAT." He scoffed.

He watched her turn to leave and flicked his tail back and forth, looking back again to the stripped rabbit corpse. There was barely enough bone left to leave it recognizable. It... was a good thing he had done. It was training. He did his best to ignore the churning that began in his stomach as it protested against the unorthodox meal.

"And safe travels back to your mommy." Firestorm brayed. "It's awful hard to leave these herdgrounds on foot!" He grinned again, remembering her mentioning her wings "weren't fully developed yet".

'Yes, so very..confident,' Shinoma snickered. She couldn't imagine killing something, and then sharing it with somebody who annoyed her, so she suspected Firestorm a little. There was time enough to test him again, but for now he was boring her.

'Sure it is, especially when you're faint from hunger, and have to go scurry off to eat some grass. As I'm sure you will.' she said, her tail flickering, as she carried on staring the colt out. With a shake of her head she turned, calling over her shoulder;

'You carry on hunting now, that grass won't kill itself!' she laughed.
