Gah, beginnings. I hate coming up with a nice beginning.
Remember, while knowing your world is important, having a plot is even more so! Even a general idea of what will happen should be enough (unless you're like me, who have to start at the very beginning and have the entire plot mapped out). If you can't come up with a specific beginning, start somewhere else. Anywhere is fine. The middle, the end, somewhere in-between. You can return to the beginning later. Writing in a chronological order isn't necessary as long as you can connect it seamlessly later.
If you still haven't come up with something, imagine a scene - i.e. two of your major characters meeting for the first time, a conversation between antagonist and protagonist, your main character entering a thriving port (probably meeting a very drunk sailor on the way), something like that - and continue from there. Hopefully it will get you going. Even if it is hardly relevant to the story itself, at least you have begun somewhere. No one has ever said that the first draft should be perfect or even close to it. Chances are, you'll go back and edit it several times over. It's one of the (annoying yet useful) phrases of writing.
Hope that helps. smile
