Abacus tilted his head to one side, puzzling it out. "So for each -- er, not each but most attacks, there's a way to defend or counter it? What if you don't know the best way to defend against an attack -- what's the best method to defend or prepare against it, or should one just take the attack while preparing a counter move?"

"Splits?" He repeated, nearly gasping out the word. "Are you serious? That move..." He shook his head, then grinned, "Then again, if you can do that move, then other moves look simple in comparison, right?" He grinned, then did as she asked. "Urgh! There. And now to reach..." He leaned forward, backing up and flipping his hands out to either side of him like a bird to steady his balance. "Ack! Know of any balance exercises to go with this?"

At the jest, Abacus laughed softly and shrugged in return, "Haha! I forgot about all that. Let's see how far... ah! Is this how you do it?" He reached with one arm towards his raised foot, keeping the other arm out for balance. "Or is this cheating?"

"Mhmm! Of course, there's no specific way to counter or defend. You need to know how to read the other's movements and spot the weaknesses in their attack then respond to that - exploiting that opening." She blinked at his last question and pondered it, "Well... it depends on the situation. Sometimes, if you can that is, it's better to take a hit as might then have a huge opening to deal a crushing blow. Other times it'd be pointless to absorb an attack and be injured if you could avoid it. The whole point of learning to fight is learning to combat someone without taking any hurt to your person while fending them off." She set a hand on her hip as he stretched like she asked, "The point of sparring is not to injure your opponent but to test your skill and control. However, if you're fighting a monster or an Outsider I would think they wouldn't willingly step down and continue to try to kill you. In that case it becomes a matter of subduing your opponent while suffering as little injury as possible, no?"

She nodded but stepped in closer, raising his foot a little higher, "You're doing it correctly but you're really stiff. Stretch. Flex your foot and straighten your other knee as much as possible. If it's too painful relax a little, breathe for a few seconds then try again." Smiling, Kallisto shook her head, "That's alright but you'll get more of a stretch if you read with both arms. As for balance... walking on a steep slope covered in gravel in the Flora Gardens is a start... or crossing a narrow beam. I'm sure Kortus has some equipment that could help you. It's really just something you have to develop with practice."

After a moment, she let him bring his foot down and then gestured for his other foot, "Next leg. It's a bad idea to stretch just one side of your body."

"And that comes through experience and practice, right?" Abacus asked, "Since counters and defending seems unpredictable, would that make it so that if, say, one particular strategy worked... Then there's a high chance that it won't work again with the same opponent, since they know that move?" Ah, great, here's something his photos wouldn't be able to help him with. But then again... what if he watched other duels, and learned from them? He'd have to look into that. When Kallisto continued, Abacus nodded. "I see! Fighting is a method of survival, and your ability to master your strength rather than showing it off and letting it out of control like an Outsider, right?"

When the foot went up, a sharp wince escaped him before he re-adjusted his balance. "Haha, probably because this is the first time I've ever done something like this," he joked, slowly pivoting his balance-arm in for the stretch. There's slopes in the Gardens? Then again, I haven't really explored that area that much... I've only been in the flowers, He frowned slightly as he thought of Biwa, who he had met there and hasn't seen sense. Perhaps he should go back there and look, since he could use those steep slopes as a look-out point and --

He looked at Kallisto in mock-horror. "Again? Oh boy..." He took a moment to shake out his stretched leg, getting used to the feeling before lifting his other. His arms shot out immediately, giving him the look of some sort of Awkward Abacusbird of the Phlegm Plumage that was native to the White District and ignorant of stretching. Taking care not to tumble over, he brought his arms and and reached towards his boot. "What happens if you don't stretch one side? A bad cramp? Potential injury?" He asked, curious.

"Yes, learning to gauge your opponent comes through practice. And not neccisarily - sometimes it works repeatedly. Like if you spar against a friend numerous times you learn each other's moves and tactics." She smiled and patted him on the leg he switched to and hoisted up a little further as well, "You have to learn to think on your feet, whether it be tactics or instincts or both."

She sighed, a little dissappointed, "I don't actually know how an Outsider fights - I'm only a One, remember? But as I see it, yes it is a method of survival regardless of who your opponent is."

The kinesthetic grinned as he stretched awkwardly, "This happens - you get stiff. And if you don't stretch both sides, you could tear a muscle, twist an ankle, break a bone - all manner of injuries can result because you expect one thing and your body gives you another. Though tearing a muscle would be the common I think... I've wrenched mine more then once. You get all achey."

Once that stretch was done, she lead him through several other useful stretches that would loosen up his back, legs, arms, neck, and even hands and feet. She wasn't breathing hard by the end of it but it had been a vigourous 'warm-up'. Clapping her hands together, she took up a position before him once more, "Alright. You have punch and kick alright, now you need to learn to block and dodge. After that we can spar, okay?"

She gestured to him, "Punch or kick me. I'll show you blocking then dodging."

Well that is good to know, though... "Would it be to your advantage against a familiar opponent, then, to change your tactics often? Or to use one again and again, then suddenly change?" He bit back a wince as the leg went up, shifting his balance as to not end up falling over with the new height. He decided that it was in his best interest to stretch often, so that next time this happens it wouldn't feel like his leg was being pulled off.

Abacus offered her an embarrassed shrug. "That makes two of us, though it was a guess -- from what professor Tamerind told us, brute strength seems to be their tactic."

At the listing of injuries, Abacus dutifully did the exercises instructed without complaint, and committed them to memory. "Ugh, that doesn't sound very... pleasant," he replied, shaking his head. "What do you do for aches? I can understand going to the Infirmary for the worse injuries, but not for something like that."

Now! He took a deep breath, looking from her to her stance and back to her eyes, resting his gaze briefly on her shoulders (Note to self: avoid those at all costs.). "All right, here goes!" He cried, swinging his right fist forward aimed at her stomach. It was, he decided, the safest place to target in more ways than one.

"Again, that changes with the situation. You'll have to find your own way of fighting." Kallisto smiled, "What I tend to do though... is start off with the same routine but then switch it some. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You don't want to be totally random as your allies may get caught as well and you probably want to avoid casualties of that sort."

She shrugged, that saddness settling in her eyes once more as she was reminded of her tutoring, "I... find that hard to believe. Have you been to Science yet? Professor Abrid explains some about the Outsider Anatomy... and, well, if you have that sort of augmentations, one would think tactics would be used as much as brute strength. They're not stupid." Kallisto poked him on the forehead, "Otherwise we'd never have any new Zeroes if there was nothing to pull from, huh?" Arching a brow she waited a moment for the comment to sink in - it seemed obvious to her but then again, if Abacus hadn't completed the majority of his schooling then it was par for the course.

"Cool compresses, stretching, rest. Don't favour an injury too long or it gets worse, believe me." All seriousness now, the sanguine settled as he punched and immediately arched a brow. Sweeping her left arm down and out, she caught his punch and swung it out wide - away from her body.

"Ah... Don't be a gentleman. If you're fighting, you're fighting to disable your opponent. Just because I'm female doesn't mean you should avoid my face or my chest." Smiling, she ushered him back into his starting stance, "That was a low block. Always try to sweep the attack away from your body. Okay? Try again." Patting him on the shoulder, she settled once more.

Abacus nodded to show that he understood what she meant. "I can see where that could end up bad. So to develop a style that's mine, yet has its own surprises..." He considered this, then grinned and shrugged it off. "I suppose I'll find out more about that as I learn more, and start practicing."

"No, but Science is going on right now. Currently the professor is discussing castor shells," he replied, looking a little embarrassed after the gentle chiding. It felt as if he was suddenly elsewhere, say in front of an old dusty castle and then just only realized along with the mob that the man living inside (while having a fetish for evening wear and black) wasn't a vampire, but rather a chap that didn't catch on with the modern style of dress and preferred black in order to bring out the silver in his hair (nevermind the fact that none of the aformore mentioned items are rather out-dated in the Empyrean society, but you get the idea). He tried to unsuccessfully dodge the poke, then offered a rather embarrassed smile and shrug. "Sorry, I guess I'm a little too excited over learning this stuff. But... wait, what do you mean by 'pull from'?"

"The more it's favored, the less strong it'll be once you're fully back in action?" Abacus asked, stopping to simply stare at how fast her block was. "Whoa! You just did this, right?" He mimicked her action, then repeated it to get used to the motion. "Is this to block all types of attacks, save for the face which would be..." He attempted the gesture again, sweeping his arm up and out before looking at her curiously.

"B-" He bit back his protest quickly, his face deepening as a blush settled comfortably across his cheeks. "Er, if you say so," he mumbled, still trying to come to terms with the idea before setting back into his stance. This time, he tried a kick aimed at mid-level -- the range he could currently achieve without feeling like he was trying to fling his own leg off, starting by throwing his foot away. He still needed those, and losing them due to a painful kick wasn't on his list of things to do.

Kallisto smiled energetically, "I'm glad. Martial arts are lots of fun to learn." Waving her hand, she shrugged, "You'll find out. I'd ask Abrid if you're curious." She couldn't remember when she'd learned that Empyreans brought in husks that were actually whole Outsider children... but it did not bother her. They were saving people from the doom and disease of the Outside, bringing them into the glory that was the City Empyrean.

"Correct!" She nodded, miming the motion once more, "This block is good for attacks made from the chest down. For the chest and up..." Kallisto made the appropriate block, "Like so. You go it~"

When his kick came round, she dodged the attack and swept around to stand beside Abacus, "And that, my friend, was a dodge. Just moving out of the way of whatever attack you're trying to avoid."

This went on for some time, Kallisto attacking and defending to help Abacus grow used to the motion and learn to, at least partially, listen to instincts and react accordingly.

Breaking off, Kallisto wiped a little sweat from her brow and grinned, "Now that we've warmed up some, want to spar for real? I'll only use those motions I taught you - punch, kick, block, and dodge alright? Depending on how you do, I might teach you a little something extra." Winking, she bounced back and motioned for him to start.

(( Alright, so. First to take 10 points of damage loses. Reply and then I'll start off with the battle system tutorial. :3 ))

Abacus nodded, "I will, most likely after class -- he seems pretty set on castor shots at the moment," He grinned, "Not to mention he seems to enjoy scaring some of us witless with the sudden introduction of various castor shells." And since it seemed that the topic of Outsiders was at a close, Abacus gratefully let it drop. It was starting to get a bit uncomfortable... Somewhat akin to when the magic theory teacher became ill, but on a less dire note.

"Awesome!" He tried the blocks a couple times, and followed through with practicing each defensive move, growing more and more confident with each pace. When she stopped, Abacus' shoulders slumped in exaggeration as he caught his breath. "Whew! All right! I'll do my best!" He replied, throwing her a quick salute before dropping into a stance that mimicked her's, taking one last deep breath and preparing himself.

Kallisto grinned, glad to see an eager pupil, "Alright then! Let's begin!" Without further ado, she started towards him slowly at first and then leaped forward, a punch aimed for his stomach swinging in.

(( 18/18 HP

Punch (25%)

25%

There are 3 type of actions - base actions, augments, and special augments. Base actions are any PE moves and any spells. Augments are adjustments to those base actions as learned in the other classes. The Repository has details on the various base actions and augments.

When battling, every base action is paired with an augment (should you wish to use one) that lowers or increases the difficulty of that action. The more augments you use, the more rolls you make. One base/augment pair is one roll. There is a maximum number of actions you can take, however, so take a look in the respository to check that out.

To determine whether or not you succeed, total your Base/Augment pair and look at the resulting number. Then, roll a d100. If the dice's number is equal to or higher then the number you need, you succeed.

List base/augment pairs in the order you are rolling them - you cannot edit to match successful rolls.

Also, it's a good idea to list HP before the actions you are taking. It's fine to go back and edit the IC portion should you fail at something.))

Abacus tensed as Kallisto began to move towards him and -- wow, she was fast! He swiped his arm to one side to block, then to counter with his own kick.

Kallisto grinned as he swept her punch out and countered with a kick - a risky move but he had certainly paid attention. Dodging out of reach, she spun around to throw her own kick at him...

Now to see how he handled multiple attacks.

Only, he clipped her side as she spun away, foiling her deadly signature kick. Ah well, she laughed despite the sting of the strike and threw another punch his way - from a different angle.

Abacus returned the grin with one of his own. Now this! THIS was worth those stretches that literally stretched his limits. Well, now that the block worked, why not try the dodge?

The journeyman zipped to one side to avoid her punch, and threw one of his own back at her.

As he danced out of her way, she nodded approval before turning and blocking his attack, spinning around to throw another punch at him...

Slippery little thing, he was - the direction of attack just right so as to clip her again. Making a popping sound with her lips, she winked, "Well done!~" However, even as she spoke she turned the block into another blow - two punches raining down on him.

"Thank you!" He replied cheerfully, bobbing her a slight bow, and -- "Ack!" He raised his arms and did his best to block both punches, then moved forward to throw out another punch.

Ow! That punch HURT! Abacus winced as the first punch went through, but luckily he was able to catch the second one.
