A growl of combined triumph and frustration followed as she finally, finally tasted his blood in her mouth, a blissful smile spreading across her dark features. The warm, coppery substance flowed down her throat like wine, and she almost shuddered from the intense pleasure. Her lust only intensified, and she bared her fangs again in anticipation of seeing that ruby red fluid cover the grass beneath his hooves.

The agonized cry of the silvery winged mare made her grin widen, garnet hues narrowing as she prepared herself to lunge forward again. He was injured now- not incapacitated, but he would be slow and would gradually get weaker as the wound spilled more blood. Then, he would be helpless.

The insane, gleeful look upon her ebon' features darkened as she shifted her weight, readying herself to bolt for his throat. Her wings were trembling with anticipation as the sweet crimson fluid dripped from her elongated fangs. She could almost feel his gasping breaths against her powerful jaws now.

So focused was she on the thought of killing the flutter stallion, she failed to notice the pounding hoofbeats in tandem with her own, coming closer and closer. Out of the corner of her eye, a brief flash of sienna and ebony drew her attention- though not soon enough to avoid the tremendous weight crashing into her with the force of a freight train with a furious bellow.

It was difficult to say exactly what had made the normally stoic stallion so uncharacteristically angry, when he showed intense emotion so little. His mother was the world to him, but he knew her pride would never allow him to interfere, no matter how badly hurt she would have gotten. He had noticed a number of changes in her recently, and although at first he didn't understand why... it was clearly evident in the reunion with what appeared to be... his father. Troilus.

Sukari had mentioned his father to him only in passing before, but it was obvious through appearance that the flutter stallion was indeed a blood relative. Kureno had mixed feelings about seeing the sire that he had never met before, and despite the immediate feelings of resentment in anger... he didn't wish to see him die. At the very least, he had made his mother happy, and that was more than Kureno himself had ever been able to accomplish. For his mother's sake, if nothing else, he would protect him.

A low snarl of his own tore from his mouth as he slammed into the mare shoulder-first, sending her slightly lighter frame sprawling onto the unyielding earth below. He didnt know how well he could hold up against an enraged kalona- he wasn't as skilled as his mother- but he would not stand idly by and do nothing as this mare ripped his family apart.

A brief, guarded glance was sent towards his father as he simply stood vigilantly over his fallen form, not offering a name or any words, although his mother's surprised exclamation of "Kureno?" probably revealed what was already made obvious by his similarities. A distinct scowl that he was well-known for stretched the corners of his mouth downwards before he redirected his cold stare towards the masked opponent.

He would not be caught off-guard... even if it was the first time meeting his own father.

Troilus stumbled backwards, hooves scrabbling at the ground as he'd been expecting an impact...pain...and perhaps darkness to follow, but there was none, and quite hesitantly he let out a breath he had not realized that he'd been holding in his trepidation. What?

Blue eyes flicked to his savior, a stallion with traits that were altogether too familiar. His son...this was his son. A surprising revelation now, as Troilus had not seen this child of his as an adult, a strong male...fully grown and making his own decisions. Gods, he was the sort that would make his grandsire proud, something Troilus himself had never done. That he had stepped in...intervened in the fight was something that astounded the flutter stallion, he would not have expected help from the foal that he had neglected to raise, and now...now Kureno had saved his life. He could hear the incredulity in Sukari's voice, and knew that her opinions mirrored his own.

"Kureno..." It was quiet, not really a call, but more an outward affirmation of both his rescuer and his son. Gods...all that he'd missed, it was a mistake he must not make again, he had sworn not to be his parents, it was time to make good.

Though Troilus knew the wise decision would be to withdraw now...he could not, even wounded as he was, he had to pull his scattered wits together, to join with his son in this endeavor, if he could...they would protect this tattered family of theirs.

Intense relief flooded her senses at the diverting of the unikalona's attack, although a new trepidation arose in the newfound involvement of her only son in this battle. Shock and incredulity took priority, though... she knew Kureno to be resentful of his father, so why had he jumped in to save him?

Scrambling to Troilus' side on weak legs, she supported him as best she could against her own shaky frame, eyeing the face-off between Kureno and Amaya warily. Nothing she could say would dissuade him from taking over this battle... she could only pray that he emerged the victor, without any fatal wounds. "Kureno..." she began weakly, trailing off in uncertainty. What could she say? 'Thank you, for risking your own life to protect your father'? She would hurt his pride- and she knew well from her own experience that that was the worst kind of blow that could come from your kin.

"Be careful..." was her soft murmur, cerulean eyes burning with an unknown substance. She'd not been the best mother... perhaps one of the worst, in fact... but she would make sure to give Kureno the attention he deserved... and the love. Nuzzling under Troilus' chin with a mournful whicker, she guided his heavy form to a small copse in the trees. They would do well to simply stay out of harm's way... although she wished beyond hope that she was able to help her son.

"Are you all right?" she questioned Troilus instead, cringing at the feel of his warm blood soaking into her silver fur.

He was, in truth, reluctant to go, casting a glance back towards where his son was facing off against the enemy that had very nearly felled him. Hopefully the younger stallion would have better luck. He seemed a more agile creature than Troilus himself was, for in the past few minutes, he'd moved faster than ever he'd found need to within his entire lifespan.

An exhausted whuffle caused nostrils to flare and he turned blue eyes to the mare at his side. "I think I will be...right now it hurts like the dickens." He lamented, grimacing at a particularly vicious twinge from his injured middle. Traitorous body...to give out now, it wasn't like he hadn't rested it.

Concern then flitted over his expression. The mare had been injured as well, and instantly Troilus was scanning her again to see the extent of the damage. They'd both taken a beating today, and never again did Troi wish to repeat the hellish events of the last few moments. If only 'their' side emerged victorious. Surely the unikalona was not unstoppable. Perhaps Troilus might procure the entire tale from Sukari, as the flutter male had obviously missed the opening events to this tragedy.

Now...they just had to wait it out.

Cerulean eyes were narrowed into slits as his fierce glare briefly flitted from Amaya to his mother's haggard form, guiding his wounded father to a resting place out of reach of their attacker. Good. This was his fight now.

A low growl rumbled in the throat of the dark unikalona, and he responded with a snarl of his own, pawing at the ground impatiently as he prepared for an attack.

He didn't have to wait long.

Deadly-sharp fangs were revealed as the winged beast of a mare lunged forth, teeth bared and dangerous spiked wings slashing, but Kureno threw his weight under her, landing a hard kick to her underside with a sharp jab of one of his front hooves. The uttered gasp of pain and forced exhalation of air from his opponent gave him hope- perhaps this wouldn't be such a one-sided battle as he had originally thought.

Taking advantage of her moment of weakness, Kureno came up again with his own jaw open, ready to latch it onto the first sliver of skin she left unprotected. In his haste to initiate his attack, however, he failed to notice the turning of her form, and the cloven back hoof that struck out at him.

He yelped in pain as the silver hoof connected with his right wing, breaking the bone with a sickening 'snap!'

A victorious grin spread across her dark muzzle as the crazed mare felt her hoof connect with the sienna stallion's wing and shoulder, whirling to continue the attack with a lash of her spiked wing across the front of his chest.

A whuff of triumph followed his pained grunt as she watched him stumble back with a deep gash seeping blood, smiling at him sadistically. With slow, deliberate movements, she bent her head to clean the blood from her long talons with a suggestive swipe of her tongue, making sure to keep his gaze the entire time. She saw him bristle furiously, tensing up in preparation for another attack, but she was ready when he lunged again.

Swiftly throwing herself to one side of his blind charge, she reared back and turned on two legs, striking out with her front hooves. Her own body jarred with the feeling of an impact with his side and ribs, hearing them crack in response as he stumbled to the side with another yelp of agony. Vaguely, she heard the mother's cry of horror and the father's furious bellow, but she paid them no mind.

Watching him pant heavily and wince under the strain of his injured body, she gave him a fanged grin and moved forward once more, unicorn tail flicking erratically behind her in anxiousness and excitement.

She hadn't made a single kill yet, thanks to the constant interventions from other soquili. This handsome stallion would be her first.

Nanaki had had enough.

He respected Sukari's honor, while sometimes misplaced and occasionally somewhat twisted; it was something that he could understand from having such a moral code of his own. Still, there were lines to be drawn. This unikalona mare had attacked their herd- his herd- and she could not be allowed to continue her rampage. Witnessing the tearing apart of a family that he had never known existed had cemented his resolve- no matter Nahuel's desire to befriend the young mare, she had to be stopped. No matter if he had to hurt her to do it.

Taking a determined step forward, golden eyes narrowed, he tensed in preparation to join the fray... only to be stopped by a gentle tug on his tail. Turning his head, his heart wavered in its decision as he met his daughter's frightened gaze. He knew she wanted him to stay out of harm's way, but he could not in good conscience stand by and continue to allow this ravaging of their home, of their friends- no matter if Sukari and Kureno didn't think of them as such. They were still members of their herd, and they would be protected as such.

"Aquene..." his voice rumbled softly, eyes softening as the young mare released his tail from her gentle grip, gaze downcast at the near-silent reprimand in his tone. A soft sigh, and a soft murmur of, "please don't get hurt," was all she offered in response, unable to watch him walk into danger. Nanaki almost paused to reassure her, but could only nuzzle her forehead gently in a silent promise before he stepped forward once more, amber hues steely as they settled upon the unikalona mare. He would protect his family... not simply his blood kin, but the family that he had met and become enamored with here. He would die before he allowed any one of them to perish, especially because of one of his mistakes.

There was no room for error.

Ruby irises were focused intently on the slightly swaying form of the weakened stallion before her, blood dripping from her fangs as she moved forward, mouth watering in anticipation.

Abruptly, she halted with an angry growl as a body stepped into her line of vision, blocking her view of the winged one, her eyes meeting muscled, tattooed shoulders and a reddish-orange flame. He stood proudly before her, head high, golden eyes focused upon her with an intense glare almost as bright as the flickering flame on his tail. She could tell he was more experienced than the others... perhaps the leader of this little herd.

She heaved an incredulous snort. He wished to stop her? Just like all the other pathetic members of this herd? He might have been older and wiser, and his eyes spoke of untold horrors... but no amount of experience could compare to her kalona heritage.

Something about those unspoken words caused that damned voice to arise in the back of her mind again, screaming and shouting for all the bloodshed to stop. Angrily, she pushed it back again, crimson hues brightening in her rage as she glared at the orange stallion in front of her, as if this was his fault. In her mind, it was... and he would pay for it.

Shoving the protesting voice to the dark recesses of her head once more, Amaya shot forward in a blur of onyx and silver, teeth bared in preparation for tearing into the throat of the lead stallion that dared to challenge her.

Aquene winced, her ears flattening back against her head and her eyes shutting tightly to block out the sounds of battle as her father engaged the viscious mare. She loved her father, respected him, admired his courage and his abilities... but did he really stand a chance against a unikalona that had already taken down half of their herd?

A whimper befell her lips as she heard an exclamation of pain from her father, but her heart soared as she heard a cry from the dark mare in return. If he could simply weaken her, perhaps her original personality- the one that they had all seen a glimpse of when introduced to the herd- could fight through and gain control over her instincts once more.

Aquene had always been acutely intuitive, and today was no exception... there was more to this kalona half-breed than met the eye. She didn't believe for a moment that the masked mare had simply deceived them to gain their trust, then used it to attack them, as Sukari obviously did... but the reason for her loss of control was something that she didn't completely understand.

Her eyes snapped open as another cry came from her father, horrified golden hues focusing on his form as he stumbled backwards, the mare advancing on him with a menacing gait. She no longer looked crazed or gleeful... she looked furious.

She had to do something.

Acting on desperation and instinct alone, Aquene bolted forward, skidding to a halt between the approaching creature and her father's unsteady frame. She barely heard her father's own terrified shout of, "Aquene, what are you doing?!" She wouldn't allow him to be hurt, any more than he would allow her to be hurt.

Her anger only grew tenfold in frustration as yet another foolish soquili threw themself in her path to stop her destruction. She was beginning to tire of these games- she wanted blood and meat, and she wanted it now.

Casting an evaluating gaze towards the winged mare before her, she snorted in disbelief- this was pathetic. Growling angrily, and suddenly lusting for much more than just the red stallion's blood, she shoved the ivorn and roseatte mare aside with a swat of her wing and a snarl of warning. Confused and dazed, the winged mare could only stare for a moment as Amaya once again set her sights on the tattooed stallion.

The weak mare was not worth her time. She would make the stallion called Nanaki her first kill, and she would enjoy it immensely.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 29, 2008 10:18 am

A surprised noise escaped her mouth as she was roughly shoved aside by the armored mare, instead of brutally attacked like she had expected... was she missing something, here? Why was Amaya only after her father, now? Her mind seemed to be a bit clearer than it was only moments ago, when she was lunging at anyone that came within a few feet of her.

Perhaps there was hope for this after all... but Aquene didn't know if she could solve this on her own.

Watching in horrified fascination, her mind struggled to come up with a solution before her father paid the price for her indecision. She needed a plan... she needed to get Amaya away from the others. Where could they go that her father and the others couldn't follow?

An idea surfaced in her mind, and golden hues widened in comprehension and hope. They quickly darted to Sukari and her love, incapacitated and nursing one another's wounds, then to Kureno, and his broken wing dragging on the ground beside him as he made his way to his mother's side. None of them would be able to follow, and little Kazuko was still too young to fly.

Molten amber hues narrowing in determination as she cemented her resolve, sprinting forward as the mare neared her father's unstable form. Letting loose a war cry, she latched onto the first thing her teeth could reach- which happened to be the back joint of one of the mare's hind legs.

As expected, Amaya bellowed furiously and whirled to face her, visibly seething with anger. Swallowing her own apprehension, Aquene unfurled her wings, taking a step backward before abruptly lifting off of the ground with a single powerful flap, hoping beyond hope that the unikalona would follow.

A surprised and intensely furious snarl tore from her parted lips as Amaya felt a sharp pain- annoying at best, although it wasn't even hard enough to draw blood- shoot up her leg. Normally, she would ignore this sort of weak attempt at deterring her from her path, but she was sick and tired of these interruptions!

Whirling around to face the foolish mare with a glare that was no longer simply dangerous, but absolutely livid, Amaya bared her incisors and stomped on the ground threateningly. If this little child wanted to start a fight, far be it from her to deny her that... she would indulge her, but she could guarantee it would be her last.

Watching as the multicolored winged mare lifted off of the ground, she let another low growl rumble through her chest as crimson eyes narrowed into fierce slits. Was she trying to escape, now? After that little episode? Oh no... she had another thing coming, if she believed that Amaya would simply let her go now.

Braying her challenge loudly into the dark sky, the unikalona unfolded her own leathery wings, taking off immediately after the smaller mare. She heard the orange stallion's loud cry of protest, but pointedly ignored it- she would return later to finish him off, and enjoy the sight of him crying over his deceased kin.

Flapping once, Amaya blinked in slight incomprehension as her speed did not allow her to overtake the mare immediately as it usually did with airborne prey... perhaps she was slightly more skilled than she gave her credit for. No matter... she would soon be littering the ground in pieces, anyway.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 29, 2008 10:46 am

There was a tremendous sense of relief as Aquene watched the ground fall father and farther away below them, leaving the broken fragments of the herd behind- safe... but a steadily rising panic was also taking hold of her frenzied thoughts as she listened to the wingbeats of the kalona mare coming closer and closer.

She hadn't really thought of what she would do after she drew the mare away from her herd... only that she couldn't stand to see anyone else get hurt. She was more than willing to risk her own safety for theirs, even give up her life if it meant saving all of the others... but she didn't want to die. Not yet. Not before...

A flash of crimson and black. An adoring sparkle glinting in rose-colored jewels.

No... she couldn't die yet. Her wings beat faster as she pushed herself harder, feeling the slight breeze of a hoof barely missing her flank as Amaya caught up with her. Using her recent experience with a kalona flyer, she tucked her wings in and did a full barrel roll to the side in midair, shooting off in another direction with a determined snort.

Amaya may have been stronger, bigger, and more dangerous... but Aquene was faster, more nimble, and a better flyer. She would not let herself be overtaken so easily.

Another frustrated snarl escaped her parted jaws as her attack missed by mere centimeters, and the winged mare darted away from her with a seemingly effortless maneuver in the stagnant air. There was no noise, aside from the gentle breeze... even the wildlife seemed to have silenced in the surrounding area with the intense, murderous aura that radiated from the unikalona's being.

She wanted this mare dead.

Darting after her with a strong flap of her own wings, she fought to gain on the distance between them, her ire rising exponentially when the wind seemed to carry the smaller mare only further away. This was not right... this did not happen. Prey did not escape her like this.

Letting loose another challenging cry, Amaya flapped her wings harder, fought the currents of wind that blew her away from her target, that seemed to be protecting the female. She managed to catch up after a few moments, and a bloodthirsty smirk curled the corners of her lips as she opened her mouth, lunging forward and raking her fangs across the exposed backside of the young mare.

Her answering cry was music to Amaya's ears.
