Some things, you should keep secret, the goddess in her mind said, sharply.
Even this? Svana didn't understand. Why?
Because you play the Game to win. We play the Game to win. The Tree is the sign of our victory, the replanting of Yggdrasil. Verthandi's breath in her ear was soft, slow, weary... weary of explaining to this nervous creature that Skuld had insisted was the perfect vessel. Why? Child calling to child, perhaps, but for the Sight to have landed in such a being... she was doubting its veracity more and more, right now.
And yet...
Svana glanced at Fish again, now that he'd lowered himself to her level. "We can't all win, can we? The Tree can't grow if your... your person, god that talks to you, wins, can it?"

Fish shook his head, feeling a bit confused. A nature goddess, maybe?
"I don't think it would work that way, no," he replied, and suddenly he was curious. Poseidon had never discussed what his post-game plans were with Fish.
We'll talk later, burbled the god.

"I don't get it. Nobody will explain it to me," Svana said with a huff, folding her arms over her chest. "It's like the stupid kids on the playground climbing the jungle gym and shouting about how now they're taller'n everyone else so they're best. I didn't ask for some stupid voice. Did you?"
Dangerous words, for someone in your position, the goddess hissed in her mind. You can't have what you want from me and not play the Game. That isn't how it works.
Svana pointedly ignored her, focusing on Fish instead.

Fish shook his head, "I didn't ask for it, no," he said, "But it's still an honor to be selected to play." He nibbled his lower lip in thought. Miss Floros was pretty good about explaining things to new players, but Svana was lacking the information the diminutive goddess provided.
"Anubis gave you your talisman, didn't he?" asked the teen, remembering the other judge, the one who called them to Seasons that night all those months ago. "Big, black guy? Pointy ears? Beads in his hair? Looks a bit like a creeper?"
Once you'd seen Anubis, he was hard to forget.

"Yeah... I saw him..." Svana gave Fish a wary look. "So if only one... voice, god, thing, can win, does that mean we're gonna have to... kill each other one day?" She shrank abruptly, fear written in her gaze now. He was so much bigger than she was - why had she even talked to him?! Her hands started to shake. Oh, he was going to kill her right here, right now and that would be the end of it...
Calm down-

Fish's expression softened a bit. This part he remembered, the initial distrust of the other kids, the not knowing who your friends were and who was just waiting to shank you.
"Someday, yeah," he said, "But things are quiet right now. There are these guys called Blacksuits? A couple of months ago they kidnapped someone involved with the game and all the fighting got put on hold. So I guess you could say we're in a cease-fire for the moment?"
Poseidon was burbling for Fish to shut up. He ignored him.
"There's a flower shop in Middling called Seasons that you should go to," he added. "The owner, Miss Floros? She can tell you a lot more than I can."

"Kidnapped?! I could get... kidnapped?!" Svana's eyes got even wider, even more scared -
Child-
"Alright, House Aglaia! DINNER!"
The shout from inside the house was her salvation. Svana unfroze, then fumbled for the doorknob. "NicetomeetyougottagoBYE-" and then she was on the other side of the door, clicking all the locks closed, and shaking.
And there was going to be water on the dinner table, wasn't there? Oh god, oh god, oh god, and she had to go to the bathroom and the toilet had water in it oh god oh god oh god-
Calm yourself, Verthandi whispered, gentler now, unnerved by the fear rampaging through her champion's mind, but unable to truly do much as Svana darted into her room and tucked herself quite firmly under the bed, to cry and shake for another hour before one of her brothers came to look for her.
