Listening, he was not so sure what the difference was between a whisper and a low voice. There was an answer to that, though, a nod was silent. Following the steering, he moved where he was directed eager for more learning. Eyes fell to his tuftless tail before looking to where he was directed. Looking around, brown orbs observed where he was placed to try and understand what made this place different.
Watching the rat, which to hid thought was bigger then any he had ever seen before in his whole life! Expecting Thili to go after it and kill the thing, obviously he was wrong. Looking up a moment, he was back to eying the thing that turned into Motsu, whom he was currently 'feuding' with. Turning it into a game, the little cubs crouched down, wiggling his butt before leaping off with play strengthened back legs. Good pounce, usally got his siblings when he had the higher ground, now he was sort, but had the tail in range.
Bitting on to the pink tail before the rat could get away, he jumped when it screamed and turned on him. Tussling, the cub was close to having something not covered in fur scratched and faced getting bitten. He tired to keep the match like he would with his siblings, hitting the rat with more force. No claws were used, but his hits were enough disoriented the rat as he continued to work at getting to the throat not yet willing to let go of the tail.
This was much tougher then fighting with one of his siblings and he had long stopped the playful growling determined to try not to get hurt and to get the rat.

Thilivhali watched carefully, looking for any hints that Sewelo might be in trouble. After all, these rats could get pretty tough… no permanent damage would be done, but he didn’t want Sewelo to get even a single scratch. That was the tough part of being a parent, he supposed. Knowing that you had to stand back and watch your kid get in trouble, even get hurt. Still, even knowing this, Thilivhali still burst into motion at the first squeal of surprise from Sewelo. Damnit! He had forgotten to tell Sewelo that, under certain circumstances, it was ok to use claws! That was important, especially for a leopard. They didn’t have the same power as a lion. He wasn’t entirely sure about leopons, but… well, this was close enough.
Jumping from the shadows, Thilivhali gave the rat a good hard smack; since he needed the rat alive for more hunting lessons, he didn’t use his own claws. Right now, he just needed it to stay still for a while. Or at least get it dizzy so it wouldn’t hurt Sewelo at all. Pinning the rat down with one paw, he ignored the enraged squeaks. “Sewelo, are you alright? It didn’t bite you, did it?” he asked anxiously, worried that he might have pushed the juvenile too far too fast.
The rat, under his paw, squealed and tried to bite him; it hurt, but there were some things that were more important.

The moment the attack was over with and Thili had come to his rescue, ego deflated Sewelo muttered something about the rat 'not being Motsu'. Shaking his head, he resisted the urge to whine, maybe he might try that on his mother but here he wanted the chance to hunt again and crying like a baby didn't sound smart.
He was lucky his fur protected him a deal even if some of the scratches still hurt. "No, I am alright, sorry." the comment was soft spoken and his ears were low, he had failed. To him, it seemed he should have been able to take down the rat all on his own. Surely it wouldn't have been asked of him if Thili didn't think he could do it. Instead of living up to the perceived expectation, he failed. Silver lining, his tail was no longer on his mind.
Glancing at the big rat, he couldn't understand why it was so hard to handle, all his experiences were with his siblings and they were that hard, even two of them.

In Thilivhali’s mind, it wasn’t Sewelo who had failed; it was the adult lion, who had neglected to properly prepare his pupil. He had been too excited at the prospect of seeing the cub make his first kill to take it slow. “No, I’m sorry, Sewelo,” he said softly. “I should have prepared you more. In some circumstances, it’s perfectly ok to use claws. You just can’t use them, unless you really want to hurt someone, like if your life is in danger.” And, yes, he felt that hunting counted. Hmm… he could see that Sewelo was depressed and he was determined to help that. It was a bit torturous for the rat---something that Thili didn’t approve of---but he felt it was a necessary evil, in order to prepare a young lion for life.
“Let’s give it another try, Sewelo. I’ve got the rat under control; it won’t hurt you or me. Try using your claws to get into its skin. That’ll give you an idea of how much pressure is needed.” Well, so long as the rat wasn’t moving, but they would work their way up to that. Carefully, he turned the rat on its back, so Sewelo could see the softer areas.

The cub looked up hopefully, that he hadn't completely failed. Though, when it was mentioned that it was okay to use his claws, he opened his mouth to protest. Momma had told him not to when he was playing with his siblings, so to him it was bad. Struggling a bit, with the truth he knew, and the new one, there was a compromise met. He didn't want to hurt his siblings, even if some times they made him mad, so Momma meant not to use them when he didn't need to.
Feeling easier about the whole thing, his tail stopped thrashing and he looked down to his paws. Pulling out the black claws, he flexed them with a sense of unfamiliarity. First, his used them to bite into the cool earth below him, bringing up the heavy soil scent that was as soothing as the ocean herself. After the bit of practice on the ground, the feeling of dirt around his claws different but neat, the real practice began.
First, he touched the rat's belly with his paw, no claws. Comfortable with that, he brought them out and tried to scratch it. Only the merit of his claws being sharp caused any change between with and without the claws out. Tilting his head to the side, he put more force in and dragged his claws own this tile cutting a full half inch into the rat's belly. This was the first time he had spilled blood, the first time he had deliberately hurt another living thing.
Mother once said things must die for others to live, the saying carried the strange act into a circle where he was comfortable with it.

It was a tough lesson, learning to kill. It was one thing to talk and pretend to be the biggest hunter in the lands, the one who always got his prey. It was quite another to look down and see the rat squealing for its life. But, alas, lives had to be lost in order to allow others to live. It wasn’t really a circle, as Thili saw it. It was more like a vast web, each delicate knot affecting another knot by an invisible line. Although he did not hunt for grasses, the lion’s life was dependent on the plants all the same. If there was no grass, there were no antelopes. Without antelope, the birds that fed on insects on the antelope would die, as would anything else that depended on the ungulate. Each disturbance sent out delicate reverberations that would be felt throughout the world.
The rat’s squealing brought Thili out of this introspective moment and he put just a little more weight on the rodent to keep it from escaping. “Good! That was good, Sewelo. Very good.” And it was, in many ways; the wound wasn’t very deep, at least from what Thilivhali could see, but it was long, for a rat. The bloodloss would slow it down and make it easier for hunting practice. But… he hesitated a moment, looking down at Sewelo once more, vaguely concerned. “If you’d like to stop, we can continue another night,” he said gently, making it clear that stopping now would not be a failure. It would simply be putting victory off another night.
If Sewelo was determined to continue, Thilivhali was pretty sure he had a good idea of how to continue the lesson. He would weaken the rat himself by batting it around, get it nice and dizzy so it wouldn’t do any damage to the juvenile. Only then would he let Sewelo practice his new stalking techniques.

All he saw was a bleeding and suffering rat, the bigger picture unknown to him. Trying not to think too much about what he had just done, he was quick and eager to hear what Thili had to say. Troubled spirits were bolstered by the praise, and he felt better about the whole thing. Weighing his options, the cub wanted to go home, but was determined to be strong.
It may not be failure to give up, but he pushed on and said, "I'll continue, to get better." The next hunting trip he wanted to be able to do more then get scratched and bitten. Besides, the rat was in pain and since he was part of the reason why the pain started, it was only fitting he end it.

Thili gave a small nod, silently approving Sewelo’s decision to spur on ahead and end the rat’s suffering. In all honesty, if Sewelo had asked to go back home, the black lion would have gone ahead and killed the rat anyway. Needless suffering annoyed him on a level that he couldn’t quite identify. “Alright.” Once again, the larger lion whacked the rat around, easily keeping the creature contained. There was no pleasure in it; this was not a game. And that was quite possibly the most important thing that Sewelo would learn tonight, that hunting was not just a game, it was not something to do ‘for fun’. The life web demanded that hunting occur only when absolutely necessary, to preserve that balance.
Only once he was convinced that the rat was no longer a threat---it could barely walk at all, let alone lunge at a juvenile lion---he stepped back a bit. “Go on, Sewelo. Go for another try. If it gets too tough, I’ll be waiting. Go to the head and bite the underside of the neck; that’s the quickest way. Bite as hard as you can.” That would either ensure the suffocation of the rat, or that it would break its neck. Either way, it was a better death than just bleeding to death. Or getting that cut infected and then dying as a result of that.

He felt guilty that the rat had to suffer because of him. If he was able to kill it from the start, then none of this needed to happen. Hunting was vital and if his mother did it, and Thili did it, then it was a right thing to do. Blood everywhere and the saddening screams of the dying rat filled the jungle that just didn't look as innocent as he had seen it on his way in.
Knowing what he had to do, he rushed the rat, flipping it in a manner that was quite rough, for the sake of knocking it over. With his siblings, running into them roughly could knock the over giving him the advantage, now he used it to knock the rat over. Bitting down on the neck, he didn't get the right grip first and narrowly avoided getting his eye scratched by the weak claws of the creature still trying to fight even with the odd so far against him. Letting go and trying again, this time this teeth came to meet and the blood really rolled out staining his white fur red, a paler shade then his mother's. Now starving the rat of air, he waited with a strong grip for it to stop moving and just give in. Not exactly sure what to completely look for, after the rat died, he still held on, breathing through his own nose and trying not to get too much of the coppery, warm blood in his mouth then he could handle.

Thilivhali watched with sharp silver eyes, muscles tensed in case Sewelo needed help again. But, this time the leopon did everything perfectly. Well, almost perfectly. At least, he killed the rat and those dying squeals finally petered out. The black lion let out a sigh; if he was given to ironic thoughts, he would have reflected on how much he was looking forward to this first hunt and how… well… sad it was now. Actually, since he was indeed given to such thoughts, he did indeed give it a moment right now. Under his breath, he murmured a soft prayer for the rat’s spirit, thanking it for its sacrifice. It felt like the right thing to do, even if the rat hadn’t exactly sacrificed itself. Still, best make sure, right?
Life lessons all around, huh?
Slowly moving towards the cub, he gave Sewelo a gentle nudge with his nose. “It’s alright. You can let go. You did a wonderful job, Sewelo. I’m very proud of you,” he said warmly, genuinely pleased with the juvenile’s performance. “Come on, let’s get you a drink of water and then a bath. Then we can take your first kill home to your mother.” And then… well, Thili wasn’t sure what to do with the rat then. Maybe give it to the ocean or something. The pride probably had some sort of traditional thank-you for the first-kill. If they didn’t, well, they probably should have one. And once all that was taken care of, he would go hunting for Senatla.

Pulled from his death grip, he let go of the rat after the nudge. Under the praise, the blood spattered cub beamed and purred. It meant a lot to him to have the praise and he soaked it all in. Yes, he did do a good job, Thili said so! The hunting trip was, traumatic at times, but he had done a good job so it was all right in the end. Even the rat was no longer suffering so all was well.
He did make a little face at the idea of a bath even if he knew it was coming the whole time. Looking to the rat though, he felt it would be worth it to show is momma and siblings what he could do. "Okay." he declared before picking the rat up by the tail again to take it with them, no telling what might come along and take it before they got back to it.

Smiling at the little juvenile, Thilivhali led the way to a small creek, idly winding its way towards a larger river, which, in turn, would go to the ocean. Cleaning out his own mouth, he waited for Sewelo to do the same before sweeping the leopon up for a bath. Besides the fact that he had promised Senatla to make sure Sewelo got a bath, Thilivhali also wanted to make sure that the leopon wasn’t injured. Probably a little scratched up, but no worse than anything he would get from his siblings. “You did very well,” he said again, between licks. “Just remember to never kill any more than you have to. Lions are at the top, but that means we have to look after everything else too.”
He wasn’t quite sure where leopons fell in the grand order of things, but felt that they were right up there with lions. After all, they were predators too, just like leopards and lions. And one day, Sewelo would realize that he was different than lions. Hopefully, he wouldn’t be upset with Thili and Senatla for keeping the truth from him at such a young age.

Sewelo dropped the rat close to the water and followed what Thilivhali did, drinking the water. It was cool and refreshing, feel being better in his mouth and down his throat then the blood had. Even expecting it, the cub protested slightly wiggling a little before completely giving in to the bath, one of these days he would figure out how to escape those.
As a lion, even a special one that he was apparently, he had to look after everything else. Thinking of how the rat was, there was no trouble adding the truth not to kill unless he had to. Taking it in, he listened to the sounds of the jungle and the gentleness of the creek. It was more ripple sounding then the crashing ocean he was so used to as a cub.

Ah, yes, it was one of the certainties of life: death, life, and baths. There was no way to avoid any of the above. Thilivhali wasn’t exactly experienced with grappling with uncooperative cubs, but his paternal instincts came in handy here. “I promised your mother that I would give you a bath, Sewelo. And breaking promises is wrong.” Of course it was. The bath was over quickly, and the juvenile was released once more. Admittedly, that was mostly because Thilivhali wasn’t quite as fastidious as some other lions were. But, he would learn eventually. Probably. “There, that wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Briefly stretching out, Thilivhali took the time to make sure that every muscle was in working order. They were a predator’s third most important tool, right after eyes and ears, as far as he was concerned, and they needed to be looked after carefully. “Alright… let’s go home to your mother then. Do you want to carry the rat, or shall I carry it most of the way?” After all, he knew that Sewelo would want the pleasure of displaying his first kill to Senatla.

He muttered an understanding, breaking promises was wrong, but baths weren't fun either! What made it all the easier was the fact it was much shorter then baths he normally got form his mother. Upon release, he lept away from the lion and reached a paw up to 'fix' his 'mane', a little vanity point of the other wise careless to mess lion cub. "Not bad at all, Momma's are much longer." Shaking himself out once more, undoing any fixing he might have done before.
Proud he managed to make his kill, and feeling responsible for it, even more so after the lesson taught this night, he told the dark male, "I'll carry it." Walking back over to the rat, he picked the dead mammal up by its body and held it tight in his mouth. Head held up he started forward, stopping to look back unwilling to go far from the older male.
