"La Belle et le Capitaine"

Part Two

Theme Music
PostPosted: Sun Jun 29, 2008 7:40 am

Beau yawned, stretching her striped body across the sun-strewn floor. After a moment there, she shifting again, rubbing her horns against the smooth surface. Boredom? She wasn't quite sure. It was a quiet morning on the seaside, and the demon wasn't sure of what to do with herself at the moment.

Restless? Perhaps. She wasn't sure why she was- after all; there was nothing for her to be nervous about. Her first batch of young had turned out alright, hadn't they?

She snorted softly to herself. If she could handle baby Lieutenant the first time, another one wouldn't even be a challenge. Plus, Captain's stony cold demeanor had softened with the arrival of her and Belle. She smiled amusedly at the thought- who would have believed that a battle veteran could be broken by a mere child?

Padding quietly up the stairs of the outside deck, Captain's silvery eyes spotted his mate stretched out on the floor just inside the house. Dipping his head a bit, he pushed in through the flap-covered hole in the door, stepping carefully over a pile of Valerian's art supplies and over to Beau's side.

"Beau." he stated simply, voice more like a soft croon than anything else. He sat back on his haunches, tail curling about his side as he did so. He watched her eyes open to look at him before lying down as well, resting his chin on his large paws. He knew he didn't have to say long, sentimental speeches to her for her to know how he felt. Ever since their first encounter she'd been able to read him like an open book. He still didn't know why, but he was glad that he had her nonetheless.

Hearing the door flap swish back and forth, Beau's eyes opened to look at the new arrival. A smile curled at her face, eyes closing again as he lay down alongside her, making himself comfortable.

She knew what he was thinking; his mind was likely weighed with anxiety for more family to take care of. Aside from that, he probably just wanted to make sure that she was happy. Well, she couldn't be happier here in this house filled with friends and family.

Yes, she could read him like a book.

What have I gotten myself into now?

Trekking up the walk from the shoreline to the large deck of the beach house, Vienna watched as a couple similarly-colored winiko bolted from here to there around the house, rushing around for whatever reason. A family? Looked like they were expecting a new arrival soon...

As her inky eyes looked the house over, she managed to find some piece of her that liked the place. It was on the beach, after all, and the young woman that owned it seemed pleasant enough... she nodded a bit as she padded along through the hot sand, tail brushing past the tall dune grass that seemed to swallow her lion-sized body on either side.

Ruffling her mane, she stepped from the well-worn path, plodding down the short hill to the walk straight up to the house. She liked the feel of the large, flat, sun-warmed rocks under her feet, effectively paving the way to the deck.

It can't be that bad. She mused inwardly, As long as I have the sea, I'll be fine.

Reaching the top of the deck, she ended up face to face with the only human resident of the household, whose face had an amused smile on it. Tilting her head to her, Vienna padded quietly into the house, immediately seeking out a place just to lie down for a while.

Yeah... it can't be that bad.

"Monologue"

A moment alone.

Theme Music
Lyrics
PostPosted: Tue Aug 26, 2008 2:01 pm

A book once cracked open in rays of sunlight filtering in through the window lay forgotten on a worn oak desk, battered leather cover closed. Occasionally the cry of a sea bird could be heard through the open deck door, soft salty sea breeze wafting through the frame. Other than the birds and the sound of the nearby ocean rolling gently over itself, the entire beach house was quiet; there was no screams of terror from the younger inhabitants as they chased one another, no calls of worry from the older ones as they listened to the thundering of small paws all across the four floors of the building.

Capricorn herself leaned back in her chair, propping her feet up on the desk. The steel on the bottom of her boots clicked softly as it hit the polished surface, overskirt falling in a silent wave from her legs to her sides. Aside from the striped elder sleeping peacefully next to her, the house was devoid of all other activity. The vampire had half expected Beau to leap up at any moment and run out the door, large paws carrying her after the rest of her family. For the past two and a half hours, however, that thought hadn't been proven right.

A light sigh escaped her lungs as she righted her chair again, slender fingers running through her fiery brown hair. Today of all days... she was glad that the multitude of winiko had left the house for a while, giving her some time to just relax. They would be back soon, though; she was sure Aldes and Kaja would be tired of being in the sun, that Azrael would want to just go and nap in the basement, and that Captain was sick of toting around his whole family without the help pf his mate. The thought made her smile. When he had arrived here, he had snubbed away any move she had made; now he was much more attached to the vampire, gentler and kinder than he had been in the past.

She looked at a slip of paper on her desk, a note that had been written many years before. It was worn but intact, a spindly cursive scrawled across it. Capricorn's fingers graced it, a sad expression on her face. It was a confession, written in a long forgotten tongue. For long ago, she didn't live in a house filled with demons of every shape and size; she had lived with a clan as prestigious as many of the royal families of the human race. Back then, that note on the desk had been a promise of love for the entirety of their immortal lives.

Her violet eyes closed tight, and she stood abruptly from her chair, striding over to the open door. She leaned against the frame and folded her arms over her chest, half-expecting her closest friend to wake and come to her side. She didn't, however, leaving the vampire to stand in the light that made her skin tingle softly. Capricorn couldn't even remember when the sun had stopped burning her; years, maybe. Perhaps it was even when she had begun to give pieces of her very soul out to demons from the corners of her mind.

'Fate has a funny way of dealing with non-believers,' her father had once told her, 'She tends to force them to believe in one way or another. It's not always good, but somehow she -will- make you believe.'

Well, what a way to kick her in the face. She had lost everything, everything she ever loved, killed her only brother, and now... now she was so deep into this strange world of demons and blood-bonds that it was like she couldn't know anything else. She would be amongst devils and angels until she died; which would likely be many, many years from now.

Far off down the beach, she could hear the sound of laughter; the sound of her family returning. Even if a different form, the winiko under her care were her family now. She didn't have anything else. Behind her, the elder female stirred, lifting herself to her feet and padding over to stand at her side. She was just taller then her waist now, larger than the size of a lion. Beau said nothing, but the touch of her shoulder against the vampire's hand meant enough.

Capricorn's eyes gleamed as she looked back to the shoreline, sun setting fast on the horizon now. For better or worse, here she was; she just hoped that the rest of them shared the same sentiment.

He was there.

The same face, same gentle expression; his eyes never betrayed his feelings, always as calm as they eye of the storm. Eyes the color of lilac, just like her own. Piercing, yet soft at the same time. Silvery hair framed his face, straight locks falling to his elbows. Always the same. Always.

Spindly, thick tattoos ran across his arms, down to his fingertips, up to the back of his neck. They weren't meaningless; every one was a runic symbol. All of them. She remembered when he got them, the tears that rolled down her face as he looked at her with a pained expression...

He had scars this time. Ghastly, like a rough surgery had been performed. They weren't little ones on his shoulders, but they looked like they had once been gaping lacerations in the vital part of both his forearms. Whoever... whatever had done this, she was sure would pay.

His lips pulled back from his teeth, revealing stark white fangs like her own. His expression curled into a sneer, and... no, not again. Not now, not like the other times.

'Look at you,' his voice hissed in her head, 'Look at you and your pathetic, shattered soul.' A cackle of haughty laughter followed. It sounded harsh and metallic from his throat, piercing the shield that she had erected after all these years.

It wasn't him, it wasn't. He would never... he wouldn't say...

She sat up straight, panting hard and drenched in cold sweat.

Two shaking hands reached to hold her head, bending over and quivering with her forehead on her knees. Even after all this time it was still the same. The same dream of him.

Heaving a shuddering sigh, her violet eyes glanced about the room, noting that Beau's usual company on the other half of her bed was missing. It didn't bother her; she knew that the elder would probably be back in a matter of minutes. She always was.

Her mind wandered back to the dream, and Capricorn fought the urge to choke back a sob. Him. Always the same. To even think that she thought his memory had shifted to the back of her mind...

Xystius. Xys.

Her brother.

Sitting up and leaning against the headboard, she let her eyes roam over towards the large window that overlooked the sea. She could hear it distantly rolling against the shore; judging by the tide it must have been nearly four in the morning. The house would spring in to life within the next two hours or so, and another bustling day on the beach would begin.

Shattered soul, he had said. Well, not entirely a lie. How many did she have now? Twelve? Little bits of her soul that she could never get back. What did it matter anyway, though? She didn't have anything besides her winiko to life for any longer.

Down the hall, the soft hushing of Beau's voice drifted into her room. Kaja must have woken early, then. Even though her own offspring were long since grown, she never lost that motherly instinct. Any baby in the house was welcomed in as her own.

'I'm coming for you.'

Her attention snapped to the window, where a tall, slender silhouette leaned against the frame. She froze, mind racing; why wasn't Beau here? She would have sensed the intruder long off, and-

'I'll protect you.' the voice whispered again. The shadow was gone now. 'Soon I will come to you.'

Shivering under her covers, she patted the bed next to her as the striped elder suddenly padded into the room. Asking no questions, she curled up next to her bonded and just settled as a shoulder to lean on.

How could he come back...?
