Malice was stunned; no one had ever called her strong. Sure, people who didn’t know her called her pretty, but strong was better, it was important, it was desired.
“Won’t break.” Malice told Maira slowly. “I won’t never ever break.” And, for the first time in her memory, she truly smiled at the other girl. “You’d make a good cloud, you change very fast, like the clouds do.” Yes, the other child was probably crazy and she scared Malice, but she couldn’t help but to smile, Maira was the first thing to install a healthy amount of fear into her, and Malice found it almost refreshing.
There was no nothing phony about Maira. . . And Malice respected that.

Maira blushed, looking pleased. She knew she'd make a good cloud, but it was nice for someone to agree with her for a change!
"I'd go puff puff in the sky and blot out the sun and make it rain all day, then I'd let it be sunny and things would grow and people would be sunburned and happy," she said, twirling on the sidewalk. "And you would laugh at me, but that's okay because you're bad and that's what you do and I wouldn't care 'cause I like you, Malice, I really really like you even though you're scared'a me like I'm a spider. Spiders have too many legs," she added with a frown. "They go creep-creep on my spine and they give me the shivers."

Malice had trouble keeping up with the fast-paced topic changes, but she got the gist of what Maira was saying. It was unsatisfactory to Malice that the other girl knew she was afraid of her, Malice tried to keep her fears hidden. People could use your fear against you.
“Spiders aren’t so bad.” She commented, remembering the large hairy tarantula she’d tried to convince her mother to buy for her. “They can be lost of fun, and the kill and eat all the icky bugs!”

Maira gave a profound shudder, her head snapping side to side in argument.
"They're bad, oh, they crawl and creep and go up and down your arms and under the skin and find the prickly things and eat, eat eat you up from the inside," she said, voice thready with private horror. "Oh, no, they're awful, awful! They look on the inside and they suck you dry and they find the heart of you, and, and oh, it's terrible-"
Maira started to cry in earnest, sniffling.
"Oh, Malice, they find the heart of you and they take it. They say that they're your friends, or, or that they want to play with you, and they take your heart and burn it."
She scowled suddenly through her tears, fists clenching tightly.
"I met a spider once, but he was a person too. He was mean to me and called me names. So I screamed and screamed and told a lie, and I got my spider in trouble. He was pretty but he was mean too, and the nice-nice police-men took him away. I bet they ate him up and kept his bones."

“Whatever, spider man is gone away now.” She told the other girl reasonably. “They probably just got him in trouble. Normal people don’t eat people, no matter how good they taste with ketchup.” She gave a macabre grin, eating people with ketchup was a little too gross, but it made a cool mental image.

Maira suddenly smiled so wickedly it was alarming.
"I did a bad thing," she told Malice confidentially. "I screamed and told a lie and that means I said not-the-truth, and they took him away while he was all angry and scared. And I'd do it again, except maybe I wouldn't. I try to be good, but it is very hard sometimes."
The wicked grin gone, Maira suddenly looked confused. She plunked down on the ground, studying her snowy white bare feet.
"It wouldn't be good, to eat someone with ketchup. That's made of dead tomatoes, you know. I do not want to eat dead tomatoes, they probably had families just like he did, and now he's all mashed up and something to put on hot dogs."
She blinked, looking cheerful.
"I want a pet hot dog. But it wouldn't do much, would it?"

“I don’t think it would. . .” Malice told her cautiously. “But you could always eat it when it made you angry.” She pondered for a moment.
“Being mean in much easier than being good.” She told Maria sincerely. “But it takes practice to be mean properly; when you’re cruel you have to put feeling behind your actions.”

"I suppose I could," Maira said with a sagely nod. "But I don't like hot dogs. They're made of dead things and little buggles."
She listened with full attention as Malice spoke, chewing at a fingernail as though in anxiety. Then she pulled at a hank of her hair, face scrunching up.
"...hair's all like wire all sticking up and sparking with lightning blood," she muttered. Then she looked up at Malice. "I do not think I can be mean all the time. I forget what I am doing a lot, like what I was doing before I bumped you. I think...I...I think I will just act like I do when I remember something. So then sometimes I can remember to be mean."

“Where were you going when you bumped into me?” Malice asked, wondering where the strange girl was off to on her own. “Where you running away? Or running to somewhere?”

Maira blinked, looking as though she'd just gotten a blow to the head. She stumbled and sank to the ground, looking dazed.
"I..." she said, twirling a thatch of hair around a finger mindlessly. "I don't remember..."
She shivered suddenly, as though from cold. Her head jerked from one side to the other and she suddenly jumped up again, breathless as though she'd run a mile.
"I-I-I d-don't kn-know," she said, voice weirdly monotone. She looked one way, then the other, then focused intensely on Malice. "Kn-knocked i-i-into yuh-you, a-a-ahnd then I...stuh-stuh-stopped t-to talk...I shuh-sh-should go home, my mother wuh-will be worried..."
The shivering stopped and Maira blinked again. She stood silent for a second, then broke out into giggles.
"Brrr! Had the Shudderies again, but it's not cold, is it?" she asked Malice brightly. Clearly, she didn't remember that bizarre moment of mental clarity at all.

Malice blinked. That was one of the single scariest things she’d witnessed in her short life. Looking at Maria cautiously, she wondered vaguely if the other girl was possessed by demons or something equally as interesting.
“You don’t remember what you just said. . . do you?” She asked with great care, she didn’t want to arouse the other girl’s anger.

Maira looked blankly at Malice.
"Your ears are broken," she said reproachfully, crossing her arms and her lower lip jutting out in a pout. "I said it was not cold, but I got the Shudderies. You are a sometimey listener, Malice."
"Maira! MAIRA!"
Maira was bowled over and picked up by a frantic looking young woman who had rocketed through the crowds, pushing people out of her way.
"Hullo," Maira said brightly to Jess. "I made a friend."
Jess, who looked startlingly close to tears, hugged Maira close and uttered several particularly filthy curse words.
"Christ, Maira, don't you ever wander away from me like that again, you stupid brat," she said, kissing Maira on the top of her head.
Maira endured Jess's frantic affections patiently, then wriggled free and landed like a cat on the sidewalk.
"Malicious Malice, this is my lady," she said pointing to Jess. "She gives me oatmeal for dinner."
"Hi," Jess said, trying to compose herself.

“Hello.” Malice said quietly, and curtsied in a ladylike manner. This was Maira’s mother? She looked very normal. “We were just talking.” She told the woman primly.

"Nice t'meet you," Jess said, picking Maira up again. "Thank you for keeping Maira company. We gotta get going now, Mai. Say bye to your buddy."
Maira wriggled out of Jessabelle's arms again, and skittered next to Malice.
"You're a good friend and a bad person," she said fondly. "I hope you don't break, and I hope I get to see you again before I forget we met."
She leaned over and gave Malice a sisterly kiss on the cheek, then bolted away, laughing, into the milling crowds.
"God blessed damn it - MAIRA! WAIT FOR ME-!"
Jessabelle took off like a shot after Maira, and both were soon out of sight.
