The hlessi kept her eyes trained on the grass beneath her shaking feet. The voice of the Owsla captain cut into her like the coiled silver thorn that had cut her leg long ago. She barely heard the plea of Rosewood and the decisiveness of Donovan. The nerves to run, and fast, were screaming in her head.

Despite the roar of fear and adrenaline, the doe amazingly heard Rosewood’s whisper. Not to get the other doe in trouble for speaking to her, the hlessi merely raised her eyes up to Rosewood’s level and then quickly dropped them again. Willow sensed the Owlsa captain wasn’t one of forgiveness for disobedience, so slowly the doe, still in a crouched position and ears flat back, began to back away from Rosewood’s flank.

Willow’s eyes kept to the ground, but she could still see the feet of the captain. This maneuver was so she could see if the buck would attack her even though she was doing his command. The doe kept quiet as she moved ever so slightly farther and farther from the warren doe’s side. Breath was barely drawn as fear of the great buck and a sense of self preservation took hold.

Cocklebur puffed up angrily at Rosewood's presistence. He would not tolerate such blatant insubordinance, even from a doe.

The large buck then made a quick swipe, with extended claws, at Rosewood's face. "Know your place, doe!" he barked, clearly less forgiving with this doe's mouthing off than a certain chief of theirs.

However, Donovan's words seemed to quell Cocklebur's anger... just a little bit. Atleast the stupid storyteller had -some- sense in him. However, the captain then turned his venomous glare at the slowly retreating Hlessi. Well? What was taking her so long! Did she want more scars to add to her collection as well?

Expecting, but not expecting such an attack, Rosewood was cuffed, rolling her with the force cocklebur put into it. Screaming in surprise, already she could feel blood starting to seep out of the wound. The sting was nothing compared to the hatred she felt right that second. For a split second the thought of attacking him back crossed her mind. In her heart she was the victor there, but in her head she knew much better.

Glaring at Cocklebur, Rosewood darted off to the warren. If he would not listen to reason, then perhaps his commander would. Without letting him know this, she just ran. Tiny spots of blood marked her trail if one were keen enough to find them over the long distance and fast pace that she travelled. Sun in here eyes, she barely saw where she was going for the tears she had from the pain.

Getting to the warren, she began searching for Bracken immediately, almost in a frantic state. Who knows what Cocklebur would do to Willow if she didn't stop it. As she became more frantic at the thought, she was unaware that she had started crying out for Bracken.

The storyteller flinched a little when Cocklebur attacked. Donovan couldn't surely say that Rosewood had it coming to her, since the owsla captain was...well, Cocklebur. Had it been Bracken, maybe she would have had an even say. Frowning, the buck watched the doe glare at the big grey rabbit, then dart off towards the warren.

Sighing, he supposed that it would be no good staying any longer, unless he wanted to get in a scuffle with Cocklebur as well. Turning, he dipped his head to the captain, glancing at the slowly retreating Willow. "I will be getting back to the burrows myself, now. Good day to you, Captain; Willow." He paused, then added to the hlessi, "You should hurry and find somewhere safe to sleep. Good-bye," before loping off in the direction of the warren.

Donovan decided that it would be a good idea to find their chief and inform him of what happened.

Brown ears pricked up as he heard a voice calling for the name of the chief. Hm...time to play good owsla officer, then.

Getting up from his (somewhat) watchful position at the edge of the hill where Watership Down stood, Thorn stretched, then began following the general direction of the voice. The sound led him round to the entrance to the burrow, beneath the tree, but the smell of blood caught him off-guard for a moment. The owsla became very alert, and, brow furrowing, Thorn determinedly began looking for the source of the smell. He realized that it was somewhat faint for an elil attack, and determined that, in all likelyhood, it had been some sort of scuffle between rabbits.

Although the voice obviously belonged to a doe. And soon enough, he found said doe, still crying out for Bracken-rah. Jumping up to her, he stamped a hind foot on the ground and cried, "Halt!" before sitting upon his haunches and looking down to examine the red-marked face. As he thought - the cuts looked like rabbit claws.

Ruffling up slightly in annoyance, Thorn questioned of Rosewood, "Why are you seeking Bracken? Surely a small fight between you and another warren member is no reason to go crying to him."

The strike against Rosewood startled the already frightened Willow. As her shield took off in the direction of her warren, the young hlessi turned tail and broke off at a run. She didn’t turn round as Donovan spoke; the only thought in her mind was to get to a bush, preferably one with thorns, and hide.

Rosewood’s voice still rang in her ears to go to the fourth bush she saw and hide there. Willow counted to four, but decided the bush was too near the Owsla captain for comfort. The doe darted around a slight bend and between two decent sized residual rocks. On the opposite side were more bushes, these ones without thorns. The frightened hlessi slipped underneath the uplifted roots for cover. The small space underneath left her backside exposed, so she hurriedly scraped away some dirt from the tangle and wriggled the rest of herself beneath the plant’s anchorage.

From her place, Willow peered out between two thick roots. Her eyes detected no trace of any life around, and she was sure she wouldn’t be followed. The doe lay down on the cool, slightly disturbed dirt and panted to cool herself off. She put her head on her paws and decided to wait for nightfall.

Staring at another Owsla member, Rosewood came to her senses a bit. Eyes still watering from the sting she stared at the buck for a moment before able to reply.

"It isn't just any other warren member, it was Cocklebur. I want to plead my case for a very weak hlessi doe i found named Willow. She is scared half to death, but of good stock. " She stared at the brown rabbit. She knew nothing about him, and didn't know if he was friend of Cocklebur or not. If he was, she was apt to get another cuff right then and there. Thinking suddenly of something else she added,

"She may have useful information for us about possible dangers as well. That's why it's important i find Bracken."

Cocklebur returned the glare at Rosewood as she ran off, all but ignoring Donovan as he too made his leave. Huffing, the Captain stood up on his hinds and looked in the direction fo the Hlessi... only seeing a flash of her tail before she too had vanished into the cover. A little smirk played on his face. Good, the filthy thing was gone... his job was done.

Cocklebur paused to scratch at an ear, lingering for a moment to make sure the hlessi was gone. He then started up the hill and back towards the warren once more. That foolish doe might do something stupid, and he should probably be there to thward it.

As it was, Bracken was underground, resting in his burrow at the time. Thus, he didn't even hear Rosewood's cries.

Another fellow rabbit was wandering the area, sniffing for flay-rah to fill himself up with before heading into the warren for a (in his opinion) well earned rest. The front of his fur was stained with the few blackberries he had found, and he had come down by the stream to wash himself off. He had heard a lot of the racket but had chosen to pay no attention until his fur was clean.

"Damned food," He grunted. "If it wasn't so delicious, I wouldn't bother with it."

There was some ruckus somewhere nearby, but he remained quiet and out of the way as he listened, not wanting to go near so soon after hearing a rabbit squealing in pain. "Probably elil..." He muttered to himself. Once he figured the coast was clear, he moved back up the hill slightly, sniffing. He smelled no elil or anything particularly threatening. He heard scuttling in a bush, then found his curiousity piqued - what was that anyway? Something suspicious, that was for sure.

Buckthorn wandered into the bushes the hlessian had taken refuge in, stopping once he had found her. She seemed to be in a bad way, and he was immediately suspicious - what if she had the white blindness.

Finally, he decided to thump his back foot on the ground to get her attention, raising himself up tall. "Er," He began with uncertainty in his voice. "Hlessian, huh? I was one once too, when I first arrived on the Down. Are you the cause of all the fuss this afternoon?" He wondered. "Are you hurt? Do you have the white blindness?" He was neither friendly or unfriendly as he spoke. He knew to be wary of hlessians, at least until they proved themselves disease free.

The hlessi kept her head low on the loose dirt floor of her hideaway. Feelings of worry for the two warren rabbits who had stood up to an Owsla captain clouded her mind. If she had been accepted, all she would want was a warm den for the night and then she would move on in the morning. Sullen, Willow sniffed the air and, detecting nothing, dozed off.

Her nap was interrupted shortly thereafter by a muffled thumping from outside. Willows eyes, bleary from her short sleep, cast around the bush roots and winced at the bright light that leaked through the roots and place she squeezed through. The scarred doe blinked and wiped her eyes with her paw before turning her head to the farthest left she could. A shadow cast over the openings where the light was supposed to pour in. The doe's mind immediately thought elil and she got to her feet and to the back of her temporary den with speed.

The voice that came through eased her fear of elil slightly, but she was still alarmed. What if Cocklebur had sent some Owsla to scare her off the warren outskirts? Being even on the outskirts was still on warren land. Trying to regain her composure, but still unsure, she spoke formally;

"Hail rabbit. Are you Owsla? I am not hurt, and I do not carry the white blindness, only scars of encounters past."

Buckthorn huffed appreciatively at the hlessian's response. Her keen alert response and tone pleased him. She sounded neither hurt nor sick, and he was well pleased. He continued to watch the scarred doe with his only good eye, pondering.

"No, I am not suitable for Owsla," He replied, keeping his body low, offering no confrontation in his posture. She was very nervous and he could see that. He also wanted her to calm. With a mild grin, he turned his head to one side so she could see his scarring and blinded eye. "I too carry scars of past encounters with elil. So I can understand your situation to a degree."

He moved closer, gently sniffing her. Once close enough, he tried to move his head out towards her, attempting to preen the fur on her head with his tongue. If this didn't calm her, nothing would.

"If you are not sick or injured, and you are not suffering from any diseases, then I see no reason why you would not be accepted into our warren." He sniffed her ears gently. "Can you tell me your story? What led you to the life of a hlessian?" He moved his head back, shaking his head, giving her her space again.

"If you wish, I can also tell you my story. Though mine is rather short." He grunted. "Though the members of this warren were rather kind to take in a rabbit like me."
