"Mm...are you happy, Sophie?"

The young girl looked up, dazed by the warmth of the sunlight. She had never been able to relate to Nuhusi, but suddenly she thought that perhaps this was what being a cat felt like. It was like sitting up near a fire pit, except gold kept pushing through her eyelids and pressing against her eyes. But it felt good. Every piece of her that was in the sunlight tingled; her back felt oddly chilled in comparison. She blinked away these thoughts, sluggish from the warmth, and tried to process the question.

"Hmm?"

Her mother repeated the question again, a rosy smile playing across her lips, "Are you happy?"

Sophia glanced briefly at her green surroundings. They were sitting at a small bench splashed with the blotchy shade of a maple tree. Spring left the birds twittering frantically from indistinguishable locations nearby, but the flowers were still hiding, except for the cheery dandy-lions. The sun was cutting in thick slices across her side of the bench, leaving her mother looking cool in her blue summer dress and dark curls.

"Yes," she murmured without hesitation. She was having a good time. Though her ice-cream cone was nearly melted. She quickly ran her tongue along the dripping edges and quickly smothered her lips with her napkin to clean it.

Rye didn't reply at first. Her face was pleasantly serene; thoughtful. Her small cup of ice cream was already gone and she was watching her daughter carefully. What she was looking for was hard to say. She was flawlessly unpredictable in most respects. The only thing you could rely on was...that she'd be unreliable. Finally, pulling back her hat slightly she smiled and looked towards the wispy clouds splayed across the sky.

"What do you think about having a sibling, Sophie?" she asked.

Sophia looked over, obviously surprised. She tried to hide it, but her lavender eyes were usually easy to read. She averted her gaze to her half-eaten gone, rubbing a finger along its edge as if you seem busy. She wasn't sure what to make of the comment. Especially when she knew half of what her mother said she couldn't take seriously.

"Um...a brother or sister...?" she clarified, buying time.

"Yes," Rye encouraged, her smile too bright and too warm, "Would you like one?"

Sophia's heart lurched like a fish caught on shore. She was serious? Her eyes flitted left and right as her mind whirled with unseen possibilities. A brother or sister! Someone to push around in a baby stroller, someone real and not a doll. Someone that would laugh and smile at nothing at all. Someone who could wear the smallest little clothes with cute sewn on frogs and puppies. Someone that would play with her when she was older and share warm chocolate chip cookies. Someone who'd always be there.

"Yes!" she squeaked a little too loudly. Her hand jerked forward in excitement and her ice cream spattered upon her open-toed sandal. Her joy jerked into frantic embarrassment as she jumped up from her seat. She whined as she tried to scrub the sticky residue off her toes and shoe with her already over-used napkin. And Rye only laughed cheerfully like a wind chime, thrilled by the energy of it all.

"Maybe next time you spill, your sibling will have some left over to share!"

Sophia stared at the huge, leafy green mass sitting on the table before her. She couldn’t take her eyes off the curled ridges, like sloppy lace, and the folds weaving throughout the greenery. She could even see drops of water clinging like bright marbles from its watering only a few moments ago. It was the biggest cabbage she had ever seen. Not that she could have claimed to see any wit her own eyes.

“This is…him?”

Rye laughed at her daughter’s surprise, “Of course it is.”

Sophie looked suddenly dismayed. She folded her fingers in her lap, twining them in the fabric of her skirt. She mumbled very softly, her eyes downcast and sorrowful, “But…he’s a plant.”

Her mother looked momentarily puzzled by the statement before her silky smile returned and she waved her hand, “Oh! Silly, he’ll come out a bit later. You started off as a cabbage too, you know.”

“I was?” Sophie blanched, lavender eyes wide. She didn’t know that! She hadn’t ever remembered being a cabbage either. Though what she would have remembered she didn’t know…the sun? Having leaves? Yet that seemed impossible. Plants didn’t have eyes. How in the world would she have known anything? Maybe that’s why she didn’t remember. Yes, she supposed that made sense. But that didn’t explain how. So she asked.

“How does a cabbage become…a person, mommy?” she wondered.

Rye laughed again, shaking her head so much that her curls bobbed, “Don’t ask me! Something with science, that’s about all I know…all the cabbages come for a lab of some sort.”

Sophie looked a little horrified, “I’m a science project?!”

“Mmm…I wouldn’t say that,” Rye mused, very calm in the face of her daughter’s worry, “You’re just as normal as any little girl, aren’t you? You just came to be a different way.”

“I guess…” she agreed reluctantly, calming down a little. After a moment she added carefully, “Not everyone is though.” She had, after all, met a lot of strange looking kids. She knew it was mean to think that, but how many kids did you see with cat ears and tail, or teal hair and a lobster shell? And she supposed…white hair wasn’t that common either.

“Normality is subjective,” Rye shrugged, “I find all of those things not too unusual.”

“You don’t find anything unusual, Mom,” she sighed, but a smile tingled around the corners of her lips.

“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Rye teased warmly.

“No,” Sophie murmured, suddenly thoughtful, “I think...that’s just you.” She smiled.

“Don’t you look handsome!”

Rye lifted her son up at arms length, getting a good look at him. She couldn’t resist dressing him up; it was something Sophia had suffered through far more willingly in comparison. But Sean was a boy so that meant she got to play with all sorts of new ideas…even if she wouldn’t get any praise for it in return. She had found the most darling African outfit for him to wear, if only for as long as he’d keep it on. She had decked him out in a bit of jewelry to. Should she be putting gold pieces on a toddler? Probably not, but Rye often had little sense. She always did as she pleased.

Sean, however, did not find it at all amusing. He hung in her grip like a dead weight. In fact, if it was possible to throw your weight downwards without showing it that’s what he was doing. His frown pulled downwards as much as his dangling feet, his dark eyes grumpy and hidden beneath bushy eyebrows. His ears even drooped. Gravity seemed to be working every inch of him.

“Oh, don’t give me that look!” Rye laughed, apparently not taking his displeasure seriously. She shifted her weight and brought him close so she could hold him better now that he had passed inspection.

“I know…why don’t I show you what I found at the library?” she suggested. Not waiting for an answer she wheeled them both over to the couch. A few worn, plastic covered books with stickers sat on the coffee table where his cabbage had been. She pushed off the first two-something about a mouse ballerina and another on French cooking-and pulled up a bulky, wide book with big letters on the front.

She sat back and pulled him into her lap. Sean, in response, slumped unwillingly with his back against her stomach. He stared reluctantly as she brought the book closer, attempting to fight off his curiosity.

“They say you’re part African wild dog,” she told him cheerfully. “This is what they look like.”

She opened the book to show a splash of vivid pictures. All were tainted with multiple shades of gold, green, and brown with a washed out blue only shown on occasion in the form of the sky. It showed an alien world…all the plants seemed dry and short or dry and toweringly tall. But the flora wasn’t what held the young boy’s hesitant attention. It was the animals that were center stage in each photo.

They looked like dogs, the ones he saw in cartoons or out walking, but with huge ears that were round almost like a mix between a rabbit and a mouse. They were very dark too, though they had splashes of browns and whites all over them in funny spots. What was strange still was that neither of these things were as strange to him as the landscapes. After all, both the ears and the spots he saw whenever Rye pushed him in front of the mirror to brush his teeth. He was like them. Except…not.

“Wild dog?” He mimicked, his voice holding only a small trace of wonder in its grunt.

“Yep!” Rye answered with a laugh. “Just like you.”

(( Private Roleplay - Me and Tahja Estes over AIM ))

A cloudy day, just a little before noon...one would think a woman would be off at work with her kid safely at school or daycare. Or, at the very least, playing indoors. But conventional just wasn't Rye's style. Common sense didn't seem to be either. But at the very least it wasn't raining. There was a mild chill, since the summer heat had faded slightly with a cold wind, but nothing more. It was still "acceptable" enough to visit the park. And with Sophia off at school she was left to bringing Sean by himself.

Sean was not a "carry me around" sort of fella. The funny thing was, he wasn't much of a walker either, unless he really felt like it. It was easier just to say that he gave everyone a hard time. It was his self-assigned job. So once the park was in view he squirmed fiercely.

"Down down down!" he cried with a huge grumpy frown as he pushed against Rye's shoulders.

She only laughed, "Alright, alright, hold on a second. There." She placed him down right next to the rubber-filled playground lot. Chopped up tires...it was the new molch in this day and age. And it didn't give kids splinters. Of course, old fashioned monkey bar domes and such weren't a part of this day and age anymor either.

"Alright," she smiled, "Off you go." She would take one of the near by benches. Maybe get some reading done. Or she could paint her nails...sounded like a good idea. She'd been meaning to all week.

A lone child had already been lying, well, sitting in wait. What she was doing hanging out UNDER the slide her caretaker wasn't sure, but Meilin kept a dutiful eye on the little one anyway as Eden, unknown to Lin, examined rather closely a stubborn flower trying desperately to bloom despite it's lack of sun.

"Why would you pick this spot...?" She pondered with all the curiosity and bewilderment that a four year old human child might muster. Large gray eyes took the plantlife in with silent regard and wonder, and tentatively she reached out and carressed the flower like one might do to a newborn's head. "You'll be okay!" She suddenly decided with a bright, toothy smile. "I'll take care of you from now on, 'kay?"

Sean scrambled away from Rye the moment he was freed. He ran frantically to, well, no where in particular. Once deeming himself safe from the clutches of his mother he looked around to see where he was. He was right next to the ladder that went up to the slide. He paused, giving it a look over as if deciding if it was worth the effort to go alllll the way to the top to slide down. His thoughts, though, were interupted when his ears twitched, catching the sound of a voice.

He leaned around the ladder, looking for the sounce with a small confused frown. Then he say it....a little green haired girl. A tree girl. Talking to a flower.

He pointed, ignoring Sophia's lectures of how the gesture was rude, "Why you talking to a flower?"

"Because it's lonely otherwise..." Eden answered without ever taking her eyes off of the flower, not belittling, but still as if the answer were as obvious as day versus night. "You talk to other people, don't you?"

And just that suddenly a pair of bright gray eyes was staring at Sean curiously, a smile crinkling the corners of those eyes as she recognized fuzzy ears. Her best friend had them too, but his were white and rounded like a teddy bear's, of course.

"I'm Eden."

"Plants don' get lonely," Sean grumbled stubbornly, not seeming very willing with going along with her ideas. He said so, of course, without actually thinking about it. But then....it wasn't really something he was going to think about. There were more important things to look after. Like that slide he had been ready to go on.

Her cheerfuliness was only met by his grumpy frown. His ears dropped a little, almost like they were soggy and he grunted, "Sean." He pointed to himself with his thumb and then grabbed onto the ladder.

"Yes they do, plants have feelings just like you do." She pouted a bit, taking offense to that statement as she very much considered herself at least half plant herself. She watched him get up though to resume his play, and after attempting to reassure the little flower that he hadn't meant what he said, though in truth she didn't know, she got up and moved out of the shade of the slide to watch this "Sean character", as Meilin would've called him. Mama Lin was always acting awful suspicious of people. "So... are you from the Patch too?" She questioned with a smile again, standing clear and out of his way.

"Plants don't have heads," he grunted as he clambered up to the very top. There he stood for a moment, pudgy arms outstretched momentarily as he balanced. It was so high up here! His ears twitched at the sight. He wasn't sure if he liked being high or not. Finally giving up on deciding he moved his tail to the side and plopped down on this bum.

He scooted himself forward until gravity did the rest. He was pulled down the warm metal ramp to the very bottom where his shoes crashed into the tire-shreddings. Mmm. The crash just wasn't as fun when it wasn't dirt.

"From wha?" he blinked at Eden as if he didn't know what she was talking about.

"Well, they don't talk with mouths, but I can hear them." She sighed, but didn't really lose her smile much. "That's okay, I like that it's kinda just me that can hear them anyway... Mom thinks it's because I'm part plant." She explained as she reached a small hand up to finger the leaves in her hair tenatively. "And that Patch. It's where me and Riley and Eirwyn are all from."

"I guess you do look a little like a tree," he agreed reluctantly. Agreeing with people wasn't one of his big talents. More often than not he'd actually disagree simply to do so. He didn't know if she could talk to plants or not...or if she was really part one. But she was very, very green.

"No know Riley and Eirwyn," he said, finding her description very unhelpful.

"Well, that's okay." Eden grinned, but already she was wandering from the slide towards the swings to have a seat on one while she talked, picking up a light sway. "Maybe you're not, I like you either way, Sean. So is the slide your favorite?"

Goodness, talkative child wasn't she?

Girls always liked to talk, didn't they? Sean had yet to meet a girl who didn't yack his fuzzy ears off. So his young mind had quickly accepted that as fact; girls talked. A lot. He didn't bother trying to stop her; he had both an older sister and a mother. He knew it didn't really work.

"No," he replied, using what seemed to be his favorite word.

He got up, swishing his tail behind him absently, and toddled over to a large plastic pony that seemed to be balanced on a spring of some kind. He reached up and grabbed the seat. With a grunt and some scrambling he managed to pull himself up, though the plastic pony began to sway immediately. His tail bristled slightly in shock as he held on tiger until it slowed down.

Once the thing was more steady, though his ears still quivered a bit with anticipation he muttered, "Mm...this is good."

"Do you -have- a favorite...?" She drawled this time, blinking as she stared, resisting the urge to frown as the seconds passed. Why did he seem so quiet and irritable? Eden knew Lin to be pretty cranky but she usually didn't show it so boldly, and he should be happy shouldn't he? Being on the playground? "... Are you upset about something?"

"I said I like this one," he replied, his dark eyebrows pulling tightly together. He had said that, hadn't he? His ears pinned back a little as his mouth twisted. He threw his weight forward and then let the pony bounce backwards and forwards.

It was a bit of a relief, feeling the wild rush of going forward and back...forward and back! His vision blurred a little as he did so and when the pony finally settled again he had to wait a minute. Blinking his dark eyes and sounding a bit winded he blew, "No."

Good's not the same as favorite." She explained, but then it finally occured to her that maybe he didn't understand because he was younger. He'd probably just get frustrated if she kept going. She smiled it off instead. "Okay..."

There. Just like that she stopped talking. Oh, Eden knew JUST how to get him!

Her little legs braced her landing as she hopped off the swing and made her way towards a bush, settling down with her back to Sean. Not even six seconds later the two were conversing, or so it seemed by the hushed whispers from Eden, only punctuated now and then by silence or a giggle or two. Whatever they were talking about was obviously both secretive and hilarious!

Sean was still catching his breath when he noticed Eden wander away. Well, he wasn't really looking for her or anything, but he had heard her. His ears tended to pick up every little thing. So it was no surprise that when she started whispering,to a plant no less, his ears twtiched in her direction.

He turned his head a little to frown at her. He leaned forward, causing the pony to creak and bend that way as well. He was trying to hear what she was saying...he didn't expect it to be hard; he was a bit spoiled in that way, being used to hearing whatever he set his ears to.

Unfortunately for Sean's curiosity, it was about then that Meilin looked at her watch and realized that Tony would be expecting them home soon. She took a few minutes to settle her things into Eden's bag before heading over to get the toddler.

"Okay, Eden, time to go before your mother calls the police." She sighed, picking the green haired girl up, despite Eden's pout.

Eden pouted a bit indeed, but said goodbye to her plant friend, then looked towards Sean and waved goodbye too.

"Bye Sean..."

Sean meerly grunted in return, his ears flicking downward to make his scowl. He didn't wave and even looked away as his tail lashed behind him in irratation. But his dark eyes quickly darted back to watch her leave after a few moments. Maybe there was hope for the boy after all. Maybe.

(( Note: This roleplay is back dated.))

"Well hello there, honey!" the enthusiastic woman greeted. Sean and Sophia's mom...Rye wasn't it? Jamie was good with names but he had met her, or her children, very often. In fact, it had only been once or twice at his mother's cafe'. How had he ended dropped off to spend Halloween with them? Well, he guessed that Becca had just grabbed her list of known Cabbage Patch Guardian's and called the first number that drew her eye. He certainly knew at least one or two of the other kids better: Ishi, for example. But, in the end, he was glad to be here at all. Becca, after all, didn't celebrate Halloween.

"Do you have a costume?" Rye asked as she shooed him into the room with a smile.

He shook his head, feeling a bit foolish. But Mother had refused to buy him one. "No ma'am."

"Well that shouldn't be a problem! Sean didn't like his first one...bothered his ears, poor thing, so that means you can be the astronaut instead." She slipped off into another room before he could protest, leaving him standing near the front door by himself.

I would have been worse if the hall had been big. But since it was short and narrow it was hard to feel "alone" standing there with the walls reaching out to pat him on the arm or shoulder. But soon he was relieved on any glimpses of awkwardness. A bundle of pastel lace, frills, and glitter came around the corner. He only realized who it was when he saw the long white locks that streamed down from the top.

"Hi Sophia," he greeted politely, unsure of what to make of her appearance. It was just too colorful, too sparkly, and too...all over the place. It was too confusing for his eye to follow. But boys were not trained to understand dresses or the things that accompanied them.

"Hello," she breathed, smiling a little. She didn't know Jamie very well, but he seemed nice. It would be fun to have someone else along with them on Halloween. She asked, "So, um...you're going to be the astronaut?"

He nodded, "I think so."

"Neat."

There was a slight pause before he asked, distracted by his befuddlement, "What...are you?"

A hint of pink touched Sophia's cheeks. She had always felt a little out of place being dressed up, but it was something she was slowly getting used to. Gradually her blushes began to change from embarrassment to pleasure. For now it was a mix of both. She ran a few restless fingers through her hair as she answered, smiling a little, "I'm a fairy."

Jamie didn't know what to make of that, but he smiled anyway. It seemed like the right thing to do. "Oh...you look...nice."

"Thanks."

Their strange conversation was interrupted as Rye swept in with a pile of shiny gray fabric and a big plastic helmet. Sean followed behind her in something that, to Jamie, looked very similar. He had a sort of space-suit on, though black, with plastic jet pack imitations on his back. He also had a big plastic gun that, as he promptly demonstrating by aiming at Jamie, flashes and made sounds when he fired.

"You're dead!" Sean declared, "Cause I'm the best space pirate ever!" He quickly turned his wrath upon his older sister, tongue sticking out between his teeth as he aimed and fired at her. She never seemed to know what to do about it and her distress delighted him to no end.

"Sean, stop, pleeasseee," Sophie begged, slipping a little bit out of his way. This, of course, did not deter him. He simply went after her. It was a never-ending sibling cycle; one ran, another chased.

Rye ignored the commotion as she pulled Jamie to the side, "Why don't you take this to the bathroom and see if it fits?"

He did as she said, slipping past the yelling wilddog boy and into the bathroom. There the closed the door. It was cramped and pulling off his pants became a trick as he kept bumping into the wall. Eventually he was freed of his normal clothes. Looking at the costume, however, he felt uncertain. It looked awfully small. He supposed that was for good reason; Sean was a short kid and younger too. He took a deep breath and tried his luck. It wasn't as bad as he had thought. Sure the sleeves came up short and the pants were tight, but it wasn't too bad.

Getting his hair in the helmet was another matter. When he pushed it one it felt awkward. It wasn't because it was around his face or was too small, but instead because his hair took up a good portion of the empty space leaving him feeling as if he had a dead animal on his head.

"Are you done yet?" Bellowed Sean from outside the door, "I want to go get candy already!"

Deciding that it wouldn't be that bad, Jamie slipped out of the door.

Sean gave him another complimentary shooting.

"Are we all ready?" Rye chimed cheerfully, finding nothing amiss in the exchange.

Sophia nodded, Jamie offered a "Yes Ma'am", and Sean gave a shout before they all headed out the door.

(( Note: This roleplay is backdated. ))

Sophia had to admit; she found Halloween a bit frightening. All the skeleton and zombie costumes were quite a sight. The fake spider webs hanging on houses and the cackling sound effects people put in their yards made her jump. The costume part was fun and at first she thought she would really enjoy the holiday. But now, walking out on the streets in the dark, she wasn’t so sure. She kept close to the two boys walking with her, somehow thinking that would make her feel better.
Sean found nothing unnerving about it all. In fact, he actually seemed delighted. Each time Sophia visibly jumped he laughed and felt a great deal of respect for the grimacing pumpkin or monster that had shocked her so. Once and a while he even jumped at her just to get her to start again. Sometimes his laughter even drowned out the scary music playing from dark windows.

Jamie, however, was rather bemused. The whole thing was fascinating. To think that so many people put so much effort into scaring others! The decorations, the sounds, the pumpkins, and the costumes all amazed him. It was a sight he couldn’t really explain and the puzzle gave more pleasure than the idea of candy did.

Rye stopped them all at the first house they came to. She gestured them forward, “Go on!”

She received a confused look from Jamie, of which she was completely oblivious. Sophia had to pick up on it instead, “We go up to the door and ring the bell. Then we say ‘trick or treat’.”

“Why?” he asked.

“To get candy of course!” Sean grunted as if Jamie were crazy. He then raced forward, cutting through a small, choppy city lawn to get to the door. He didn’t wait for Sophie and Jamie to go along the sidewalk. He rang the door about three times in succession and waited impatiently. Once the door opened even a crack he blurted out, “Trick or treat!”

The woman, though a bit startled, put a few pieces of candy into his pillow case. Sean then darted off without a word, ready to conquer the next house and earn his prize. Sophia and Jamie came up right as he left.

Sophie dropped in a half curtsy, offering the accepted line, “Trick or treat.”

Jamie, having finally seen it for himself, chimed in as well, “Trick or treat.”

“Well aren’t you pretty?” Commented the woman with a smile in Sophie’s direction. Sophie blushed a little, but was smiling. She offered a thank you and headed back down the sidewalk.

Jamie waited a moment before following. He felt the need to look in his pillow case, one borrowed from Sean, to see what he had been given. It looked like mini bag of m&ms and a pixie stick. Hmmmm…

“Come ON!” shouted Sean. He’d already been to two more houses and Rye had forced him to wait for Jamie and his sister to catch up.
“Sorry!” He called back and hurried forward.

After about an hour or so, when Sean began to complain loudly about his feet hurting, they headed back home. There Rye had all three children spread out across the floor. She moved the coffee table out of the way so they’d have more room.

“Why don’t you see what you’ve got? Just don’t eat anything without a wrapper!” That was about the extent of Rye’s candy-checking skills.

Sean was the first to do so, not hesitating even for a moment. Apparently his aching feet were forgotten, for he barely took a glance at what he had received before he started eating. He threw the ones he didn’t like at Sophia, aiming each time specifically for her face in hopes of hitting her.

Sophia, on the other hand, settled hers out neatly. She began to organize them into piles. She put all the lollipops in one, all the snickers in another, etc. She didn’t eat any until everything was where it belonged. Then she took a nibble at one of her favorites.

“What’s this…?” Jamie asked Sophia. He had begun to look through his, as opposed to sorting, and found there were many brands of candy he had never heard or seen before. The one he held presently was called Bottle Caps.

“Oh…they’re like…sugar candies, I guess. Kinda like sweet-tarts, but they aren’t tarty. They have some nice flavors…like root beer,” Sophia explained.

“They suck!” Sean said, throwing a package at Sophie as if to demonstrate his point. He went back to chomping on a tootsie-roll pop.

Jamie took his pack and slid it open. He then popped one of the brown colored ones into its mouth. It was…odd tasting. It wasn’t bad, but he couldn’t really name the flavor. Hmmm…this certainly had been more of a learning experience than he had expected. Before the night was over he had learned at least 20 new types of candy, along with the kind of snacks that a kid doesn’t want to see in their candy bags; crackers, pretzels, and apples. But eventually his mother came to get him before it got too late.

“Thanks for coming,” Sophia told him as he helped him take his candy to the door.

“I had a fun,” he said with a smile. He liked how it made her glow a bit.

“Come back any time,” Rye insisted as he left. She then went to fetch a trash can for all the wrappers.

Sean groaned into his pillow. Sleep still had a hold of him, but it was slipping away. Sleep was loosing the battle because an alarm was going off in his bladder. Man~! He had to pee! Finally he rolled off his bed, not caring that his back thumped down against the carpet. He yawned widely, grunted, and pushed himself to his feet. He was barely awake enough to keep his balance. He stumbled to the bathroom and shut the door, leaving the lights off.

When he emerged he felt a bit better. Better in the sense that he could now see where he was going and was awake enough to function properly. The stickiness of sleep still itched at the corner of his eyes, but he knew he couldn’t go back to bed. Once he was up, that was it. He was up.
He went back and inspected the contents of his room. With a frown he saw his tower had been knocked over by the cat in the night. Moaning in exasperation he went about creating a new one. There was no real reason for it, other than having an awesome tower in his room to admire and to keep his blocks out of the way, but he found it felt strange otherwise, as if something was missing.

As he was placing the last few blocks on the top, he found his nose filled with a smell that made his stomach gurgle. His face dropped, his lids falling in annoyance. “Shut up, tummy,” he growled. The blocks on the top were the most delicate! He didn’t need any distractions! Through gritted teeth he managed to put the last one at the very pinnacle of the tower. He leaned back sharply, holding his breath as it wobbled for a moment.

When it ceased to move he pulled his fist down out of the air, “Yes!” Now that it was done, he lifted his head, ears pricked towards the door of his room. It was time to investigate that smell…he had an idea of what he’d find, which made him all the more eager to go out and see for himself.

Slipping out into the hall, he spotted Sophia in the kitchen. He wasn’t surprised; he wasn’t used to waking up to Rye being there…no, Sophie was the one he’d always see. Though he’d never admit it, it’d be strange not to have her there. He depended on his sister. Especially for that sweet smell of fresh baked cookies!

He went over to the cooling pan and snatched one off its surface. It was still a bit hot, but he chomped down on it quickly anyway. He loved that warm, gooey sensation of cookies right out of the oven. And these were even slightly crunchy on the outside. Even better!

“Yo, Sophie,” He called to her turned back. He waved the half-eaten cookie in her face as she lifted her head. “Do them like this all the time, got it? They’re better.” He then turned off and headed to his room, sneaking a few of the cookies with him. He grinned at his little treasures, oblivious to how he had made his sister’s day a little bit brighter.

Sean wanted to kill someone. Well, his face didn’t really express that, with his watery eyes, flushed face, and sagging ears, but detailed violent thoughts were definitely going through his head. He felt like he was going to die and he wanted to kill whoever was responsible. The feverish boy stumbled through his doorway, the shuffling of his feet resembling that of an under-developed zombie. He didn’t even seem to have the energy to keep his tail up. It was limp and mussed and completely without expression, which was an expression within itself. He wasn’t sure how long it took him to reach the living room, but it sure felt like a century had gone by. There he stopped, turning his head very slowly to look around the room without getting dizzy. No one was there.

“…” He tried to open his mouth to make a snide comment to the empty room only to find his chest pushing out an unhappy cough. After the scratchy coughing fit dissipated he was no long interested in being a bee about it. He grabbed a blanket and flopped face first onto the couch, burying his nose in the pillows. He stayed like that until his shivering body got the better of him. It was then he pulled the blanket up to his shoulders. Relieved a bit by the extra warmth, he shut his eyes and tried his best to ignore the throbbing of his head.

It actually worked, for a little while anyway. The trance-like state, however, was broken when he recognized an opposing feeling; he was hot. It was like someone had trapped a cloud of steam right next to his skin. It was unbearable. So, with a frantic kick the blanket went flying off onto the floor.

Of course, a moment later he was cold again so he was forced to dig around blindly, as he refused to sit up, and cuddle back under it. In the end, it seemed his body never did decide what it wanted to be, so the blanket draped his midsection with his arms out in the cool air and his toes peeking out at the bottom. It was strange how, despite such a consuming discomfort, he was able to drift off to sleep. He didn’t even wake when he heard the door open or when a small hand shook his shoulder.

“Sean…I’m going to the beach with Jamie.” His mind tickled as it heard the words but had a hard time processing them. “Mom said she’d be home any minute, I called her…but um…please get up and eat your soup soon, ok? It’ll get cold if you don’t.” The door shut and his mind sank into numbness again.

It must have been only a few minutes, though, before he got up for real. A savory smell had been drifting in his face and eventually, like the urge to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, it was too much for him to ignore. He opened his mouth in a silent moan as he rose, keeping his eyes shut as tightly as possible until the light seemed less invasive.

He saw that the small table in front of him had a steaming bowl of soup on it. He didn’t perk visibly, but he found his desire to scarf down the dish to be irresistible. Since he didn’t have the energy for that, he just took large, slow spoonfuls. It was just the right temperature, though had he slept any longer it would have cooled very quickly. Once the bowl was empty he stared at it for a moment, almost as if he were trying to figure out how it got there. Sophie…

He sighed and nestled back on the couch, where he dozed off again, this time with a comforting warm belly to ease him.
